Magical Creatures Class

Dear Harry Potter,

I wanted to start off by telling you that I am your BIGGEST fan. You are such an amazing, brilliant and caring person that I have looked up to you ever since 4th grade when I started reading the Harry Potter books. Now I am in college, but the magic of Potter will never leave me

There is one question that I’ve been wanting to ask you, and I hope you will be able to answer it. In your fifth year at Hogwarts, when Hagrid introduced threstrals in your Care of Magical Creatures class, how come you were only able to see them from the fifth year (after Cedric Diggory died)? They had always pulled the carriages at Hogwarts but you didn’t see them until the fifth book. Why is that, when you saw your parents die when you were only 1-year-old?

Thank you so much for taking your time to read this Mr. Potter, I hope to be able to meet you one day!

Love,
Angela

Dear Angela,

I must say, your compliments humble me. Congratulations on your academic career; just by the eloquence of your letter I can tell you will be successful in your education.

While I saw death as a child, I’m afraid most accounts remember it better than I do myself. As you noted, I was too young. Too young to internalize the true impact of my parents’ death. After witnessing what happened to Mr. Diggory (which I will not discuss in detail here, if you don’t mind), I saw the world quite differently, and the thestrals were, I suppose, a literalizing of my altered perspective. But I find I have a begrudging affection for the creatures; they have come to my aid more than once in the past.

If ever find yourself at the Ministry, send word to the Auror Office. On the off chance that I am available, it would be my pleasure to give you a tour.

Good luck to you,
Harry
