Newt Scamander fan fiction roundup!

In her own remarkable way, J.K. Rowling seems to have found one realm of her wizarding world that remains relatively untouched by the fan community. We scoured the internet to find fan fiction about the famous magizoologist and came up with only a few examples (although that’s sure to change over the next few months!). Here’s what we found, in no particular order:

Newt Scamander’s Tedious in the Extreme Realization by ilovedrpotter (2005)

This story is billed to be “like a pensieve memory” by its author. In it, Newt is a handsome young man in his early 20s working for the Office of House-Elf Relocation. It’s a promising start, but things soon get pretty confusing as Newt comes into conflict with a woman named Devin Tower. It’s rather unclear what happens at the end of this brief tale – but it does show Scamander closer to the age he will be in the Fantastic Beasts films.

The Magizoologist in Training by Madhuri (2001)

This fic is set when Newt is in his fourth year at Hogwarts in 1911. When his favorite hippogriff Eddy becomes ill, Newt will stop at nothing to try to cure him. Although the Fantastic Beasts films will not take place at Hogwarts, this story gives an interesting view of how a young Newt Scamander might have spent his days there.

A Day in the Life of Newt Scamander by Clam Chowder1 (2003)

In this one-shot, the author of this story is going for a diary-style narrative in which a 106-year-old Newt recounts the events of a day where he visits Hogwarts to speak to the Care of Magical Creatures Class. It’s a humorous piece that depicts a rather quirky version of Newt.

As you can see, there weren’t too many stories featuring Newt – many more tended to focus on the romance between Luna and Rolf or the school days of their children Lorcan and Lysander. Also of note is that all three of the stories are at least eight years old.

Now that the new film series has been announced, we expect an influx of tales about Scamander’s younger years. (Submit yours to MuggleNet Fan Fiction today!). Do you have any favorite depictions of the Scamander family in fan fiction or fan art? Be sure to share in the comments!

I've been making magic at MuggleNet since 2012, when I first joined the staff as a News intern. I've never wavered from the declaration in my childhood journal, circa October 2000: "I LOVE Harry Potter! If I clean my room, my mom says she'll make me a dinner a wizard would love!" Proud Gryffindor; don't hate.
