Tom Felton attends Calgary Expo, admits to sneaking candy onto “Potter” set

This past weekend, Tom Felton appeared at the Calgary Expo to talk about some of his experiences playing the villainous Draco Malfoy.  He revealed that after Prisoner of Azkaban, the costume designers had to sew shut the pockets of the wizard’s robes because Tom kept sneaking snacks on set.

“The robes had these huge pockets. The rumor was that they sewed them up after the third film because I was sneaking food and drink onto set. I want to clear this up because that is absolutely true. I think the other kids starting following suit. Wardrobe would put their hand in, and it would be chocolate and sweets.”

Tom went on to talk about his initial fear of Alan Rickman due to Alan’s tendency to stay in character around the young actors.

“He has that incredible deep voice that terrifies kids. I wouldn’t say he was method, but he definitely didn’t turn into a bubbly, light-hearted soul. He was pretty dark. It took me about six years to get pas[t] saying ‘Morning, Alan.’”

When asked how it felt spending so long portraying an antagonist such as Draco, Tom explained how it was fun to be the bad guy on camera, even when it’s not so fun in real life.

“There must be some inner dark child waiting to get out of me.  It’s a lot more fun when you get to step into the shoes of someone really horrible… For years I had six-year-olds calling me all sorts of names. It took me a while to learn that they were compliments.”

He also apologized to the audience for having canceled his scheduled appearances at the Expo for the last two years. Tom concluded the discussion with a heartfelt thank you to Harry Potter fans for their support.

“One of the reasons I love doing these things so much is I get so many people saying, ‘Thank you for being part of my childhood.’ I haven’t met this person, and yet we’ve grown up together in a weird way. My whole thing is to remind every one of you, I’m not here without you guys… You’re going to get me all teary. But it means the world to us and me. And it’s great that I can finally be here to thank you all personally.”
