“Fantastic Beasts” first installment gets a release date

The release date for the first film in the Fantastic Beasts series has been eagerly anticipated by Harry Potter fans the world over. Warner Bros. announced today that the film will be released in theaters on November 18, 2016.

Interestingly, the first installment of the new series will be released only two days after the fifteen-year anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, which landed in US theaters on November 16, 2001.

The film will be set in New York, 70 years before Harry Potter becomes famous within the wizarding world. Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, who wooed Rowling back to the film franchise by adapting her 54-page book into a screenplay, stated last September that the new franchise would have the feeling of the previous Harry Potter films. Rowling also stated that the new series, while set within the same world, would not be a prequel or sequel, but rather an extension of the wizarding world.

No word on casting for the series, however. We are still awaiting news on who will play the fictional author and main character of the new films, magizoologist Newt Scamander.

Are you excited for the new film? Who do you want to play Newt? Leave your comments and ideas below!

LOL, he is awkward enough! Though my vote is for an unknown.

Can’t wait to see this! I still believe that Matt Smith who played the 11th doctor in Doctor Who, is the perfect person to play Newt. Nevertheless, I am very curious to see who it will be eventually 😉

    • Kristen Keys

Matt Smith is amazing and I think he could pull off Newt!

  • Jojo_Squires

Hmm, at least I have the chance to plan in advance. Haha!

Well I guess I know what I’m going to do on my 30th birthday!

  • Eric

I cannot wait for this movie! Very good news! For my choice to play Newt is actually an unknown. But, Here are my other choices for the actor who could play Newt. I am excluding choices like, Tom Hiddleston and Matt Smith, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Mainly because they are either too well known or too old. Newt is supposed to be around 23 at the beginning of the film so I am naming actors who are in their early to late twenties. So here are my choices to play new Scamander!nnnNicholas Hoult.nJack O’Connell nColin Morgan

    • Aimee Krenz

You had me at Nicholas Hoult!

      • Jenny

The three best suggestions I’ve seen!!!

  • Greta

I want Nathan Stewart-Jarrett for Newt!

  • Aimee Krenz

I’m thinking of a few young up and comers, who are known, but not that well-known:nnThomas Brodie-SangsternDouglas BoothnWilliam MoseleynEddie Redmayne (although he’s a bit older but that’s okay!)

    • Kristen Keys

Oh man, I do love the idea of William Moseley being Newt!

      • Aimee Krenz

I know! He hasn’t been seen in awhile…it might be perfect!

  • Aaron Davis

Matt Smith as Newt! Totally called it! He’s perfect for it!nnSeriously, if they don’t cast Matt as Newt, I’m going to scream louder and worse than Voldemort’s scream at the end of the Graveyard Scene in Goblet of Fire.

  • DL

Richard Ayoade, but I also saw something I liked which said Newt could have been a pen name and they could have been a woman? In which case Oona Chaplin? Ruth Negga? Jasika Nicole?

    • Claire Furner

That would be great! In which case, I vote Cush Jumbo, Romola Garai (maybe a little too old) or Tatiana Maslany

  • Erica Conklin

2016?! I’ll be in college by then!

    • James Grayh

2016?! I’ll be out of college by then! 😉

  • Ben

This is years earlier than I predicted! Only 2 years away! Yay! I can’t wait to see it, my friend has promised to go to the midnight screening as a Cornish pixie! They better have a Midnight Screening for this…

  • Ben

    It’s only 907 days away!

  • Hero004

    Ben Wishaw

    • Cam

I didn’t even consider this, but yes! A thousand times yes!

      • Hero004

I was surprised no one else had thought of it! When the Fantastic Beasts film was announced, Skyfall was still fresh in my head and I was like- that guy who played Q would be perfect!

    • Kristen Keys

OMG! Yes! He didn’t even cross my mind, but that is an amazing choice!!

    • James Grayh

YES! Never occurred to me, but he would be brilliant!

  • Nikki

    MATT SMITH!!! Totally agree

  • Donna

Um, Tom Hiddleston, please! He’s, like, 30. He can pass for a 20-something, easily!

  • TheQuinnler

Can we get a new count down going now?! 🙂

  • Gary Bernard

OH MAN!! Two and a half years??????

  • Steelsheen

ok well at least we have a release date, but would this fly with the director and actors and the rest of the production crew? they haven’t said a thing about that, not even in the rumor circuit.

  • Eric

Okay. I’ve done with thinking and here are my Full thoughts on who should play Newt Scamander!nnAn Unknown nnThomas Brodie-SangsternnColin MorgannnJack O’Connell nnNicholas Holt nnRichard Ayoade (a bit too old, perhaps)nnnnMatt Smith (maybe a bit too old, a little too known.)nnnAsa Butterfield (maybe a bit too young.)

    • Louise

Omg! Asa Butterfield would be AWESOME! I’ve never though about that, but I love him, so combining Asa with something Potter would be EPIC

    • RoseTyler

Matt Smith could be interesting. I didn’t like him much as the Doctor but he could be good as NS

  • Claire Furner

On a different note, may I throw out a suggestion for the director: Benh Zeitlin. nnnBeasts of the Southern Wild was an incredible debut, offering an unique mix of magical realism that would be perfect of the Fantastic Beasts film. The budget jump also isn’t unheard of, just look at Gareth Edwards and Godzilla! nnnAny other suggestions?

    • Danielle

      Gosh please not him

  • link

Please get John Williams to do the soundtrack. It’s the one thing the films got right

    • Steelsheen

this would be very ideal, he did set the musical theme that permeated the entire series. but JW is also going to be working on the new Star Wars sequels. I know he managed to juggle these franchises before but he’s older now, not sure if he can pull this off again

    • Jack

Email the president of WB’s music department and request that he try and get Williams back: paul.broucek@wb.comnnnI plan on doing it now that we have a release date

  • Guest

I really hope that they have a nonwhite actor playing as Newt Scamander…would be nice to see some diversity in the wizarding world.

  • Layla

    Russell Tovey! :)n

  • cupoftea

  • Teo

Well it depends on the age of him, really. He’s supposed to be a young adult, right? I’d say maybe Freddie Highmore. He’d be brilliant for it.

  • Eric

Guys…Who should direct Fantastic Beasts?! Mainly British, considering all directors were British (exception from Chris Columbus)nnnMy choices are;nnnAlfonso Cuaron and Joe Cornish

    • Eric

Alfonso Cuaron is mexican. Okay, Any director. haha

  • sammyadelaide
