Lol your “follow the owls!” idea is funny and for the longest time I wondered why that was never done either. However, JK Rowling was asked this and answered it. She said wizards can put magical protection over themselves that doesn’t make it so easy for somebody to just find them by owl. However, she did not specify how this works. Perhaps James and Lily did have this protection so Voldemort and his followers couldn’t do that, but we know Sirius sent them a letter in Godric’s Hollow and he didn’t know where they were. I wonder if they can lift the magic for specific owls. Like Sirius’s owl. Or perhaps the owl didn’t go directly to their house. Perhaps Peter the traitor delivered it to them, or they had a spot where they would go pick up their mail. Or maybe the owl did go to their house and the protection keeps the wizards from seeing exactly where it’s going. Maybe it suddenly disappears like Malfoy did on the mauraders map. I wish Rowling had specified this better then just saying “They can protect themselves from being found from owls”!
