J.K. Rowling receives British Red Cross Humanity Award

J.K. Rowling today adds another honor to her ever-growing list of achievements – recipient of the British Red Cross Humanity Award. This prestigious accolade honors humanitarians who work to change lives around the world. Given Jo’s status as the founder of Lumos and the president of Gingerbread – as well as her many other philanthropic and charitable efforts – we’d say she’s well deserving of the achievement.

Rowling said of the honor,

I have long admired the impact of the Red Cross’s work in the aftermath of conflict or a disaster, and it is a privilege to help support it. I am truly honoured to accept this Red Cross Humanity Award and to find myself in such distinguished company.

British Red Cross CEO Mike Adamson spoke highly of Rowling after the award was presented:

Few people can have touched as many lives through their generosity and courage to speak out as J.K. Rowling – she is an inspiration to others.

I've been making magic at MuggleNet since 2012, when I first joined the staff as a News intern. I've never wavered from the declaration in my childhood journal, circa October 2000: "I LOVE Harry Potter! If I clean my room, my mom says she'll make me a dinner a wizard would love!" Proud Gryffindor; don't hate.
