Draco’s Top Ten Moments as Book Titles
As a Slytherin, I grew up admiring Draco Malfoy. He was not a perfect character, but he was interesting, attractive, and one of the most prominent Slytherins in the books, which meant that I was was rooting for him from the start. On his 35th birthday, I want to take some time to count down some of his best moments from the books and films. As a birthday present to him, I gave him some book titles of his very own.
10. Draco Malfoy and the Origami Note
Nothing Draco ever does is simple, but it still seems like Draco went through an awful lot to send Harry a drawing. It looks more like it could be a love note than a drawing depicting Harry getting hit by lightning, but you do you, Draco.
9. Draco Malfoy and the Time He Wrote a Song
Weasley cannot save a thing,
He cannot block a single ring,
That’s why Slytherins all sing:
Weasley is our King.” – The Order of the Phoenix
With a song this catchy, the Weird Sisters better watch out. Draco really went all out on this one. He came up with the idea, wrote a song, and made badges for the Slytherins to wear. Then, the Gryffindors rewrote the song and made it their own. Sorry, Draco.
8. Draco Malfoy and the Time He Showed That He Was Human
I really enjoyed getting to see him express some emotion. It really helped to humanize him and show us that he was very unhappy with being a Death Eater. I was really glad that they kept this scene in the movie.
7. Draco Malfoy and the Time His Father Actually Heard About This
Draco made many threats about telling his father things in the movies. Unfortunately, it appears that the only time his father actually did anything significant about one of his complaints was when Draco provoked Buckbeak.
6. Draco Malfoy and the Witty One-Liner
I think he forgot that he was playing Quidditch when he came up with this line. If he had been paying attention, he would have seen the Snitch. It was a great line, though – just maybe not worth loosing the match over.
5. Draco Malfoy and His Great Observation Skills
This is one of my favorite lines from the second movie. It was ad-libbed after Tom Felton forgot his line. Sometimes accidents make wonderful things. Well done, Draco.
4. Draco Malfoy and His Obsession With Harry Potter
…everyone thinks he’s so smart, wonderful Potter with his scar and his broomstick –”
“You have told me this as least a dozen times already,” said Mr. Malfoy… – The Chamber of Secrets
In the first few books, Draco is obsessed with hating Harry. It is very amusing to read, but I think it would be a little bit unbearable dealing with him in the Slytherin common room every day.
3. Draco Malfoy and the Quest for Redemption
When Harry was captured and brought to Malfoy Manor, Draco was asked to identify him. Draco refused to give a straight answer. He did not want to say that this was Harry, even though he knew that it was. There are many reasons why this could have happened, but I like to believe that he was searching for redemption. By this point, he realized how horrible the Dark Lord could be and was searching for a way out.
2. Draco Malfoy and the Time He Learned Not to Mess With Muggle-Borns
Draco spends most of the books making stupid jokes. In the third book, Hermione finally has enough and slaps him. I love that they changed it to a punch in the movie. It just has a much bigger impact. Instead of fighting back, Draco leaves. He learned a very important lesson that day – that Muggle-borns should not be messed with.
1. Draco Malfoy and the Time He Hugged Voldemort
I normally hate when scenes are added to the movies, but this scene had such a huge impact that I cannot complain about it. This hug shocked me, terrified me, and made me giggle. It was horrifying seeing a character I love being forced to hug Voldemort. After seeing the movie for the first time, everyone at LeakyCon was reenacting this hug in a humorous way, but the horror at actually watching it stuck with me for a long time. This is one of my favorite Draco moments because it shows what he had to face and how strong he was. He was so focused on getting back to his mother that he was willing to do whatever he had to, including hugging Voldemort.
