“Fantastic Beasts” to Film in Liverpool, UK

Filming on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, kicked off in August at the Leavesden Studios near London. We haven’t heard much from the set yet – just a small trickle of information, but finally, it has been revealed that the cast will be shooting on location.

It has been announced that the cast will be going to Liverpool to continue filming. Locations have already been cordoned off, meaning that filming will be taking place very soon. It has been confirmed that

Liverpool is the only non-studio location that Warner Bros. Pictures is using for the film, with shooting starting soon at key city centre locations.

These locations include St. George’s Hall, seen in the picture below.

Liverpool

It seems that the façade of Liverpool will be used to represent the 1920s New York of the film, rather than a 1920s Liverpool. David Heyman, producer of the film, said,

We are thrilled to be bringing Fantastic Beasts [a]nd Where [t]o Find Them to Liverpool, a city [that] has such fond memories for me.

My mother is from Liverpool, and as a child, we would often visit family there.

The architecture in this beautiful city works perfectly for our film, set in 1920s New York, and I know we will receive a very warm welcome.

It’s not the first time that Harry Potter fans will see the city on film – Liverpool was used by David Yates in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 for the tunnel chase scene, and many other films have made use of the city in recent years. Lynn Sunders, who is the Liverpool Film Office Manager, said,

This was a very lengthy process in terms of securing the filming, but throughout it all, we were confident Liverpool could offer the amazing locations [that] would fit perfectly with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

We are so pleased to be able to facilitate this movie, and coming just a couple of weeks after we announced the news of a new TV and [f]ilm studio coming to Liverpool – it really does go to show we are a city in demand.

It sounds like filming really is well underway, and we can’t wait to find out more about the film! While we’re waiting, find out everything we know already about the film here, including castings and character details.
