Good Fatherly Moments from Bad Dads

There are several father figures in the Harry Potter series, some of them better than others. We at MuggleNet have already looked at the top father figures in the series, so now I’m going to look at a few good fatherly moments from bad dads.

Lucius Malfoy

Despite his abhorrent behavior toward Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys, by the end of the series, all he cared about was his family. He may not have been the best person, but he put his family above anything else.

You wish the battle to cease so that you can discover what has happened to your son” (Deathly Hallows 642).

Vernon Dursley

Vernon was a terrible uncle toward Harry, but he did what he thought was best for Dudley and Petunia.

You’re not staying here if some loony’s after you, you’re not endangering my wife and son, you’re not bringing trouble down on us” (Order of the Phoenix 39).

Percival Dumbledore

We don’t learn about Dumbledore’s family history until the last book. We first find out about him from Dumbledore’s obituary where Percival Dumbledore was described with “had been convicted of a savage and well- publicized attack upon three young Muggles” (Deathly Hallows 16). This was not the best first impression. However, once we find out why he attacked the Muggles, his actions become more understandable.

And my father went after the bastards that did it [attacked Ariana],” said Aberforth, “and attacked them. And they locked him up in Azkaban for it. He never said why he’d done it, because if the Ministry had known what Ariana had become, she’d have been locked up in St. Mungo’s for good” (Deathly Hallows 564).

Despite their appalling actions, all three fathers did what they thought was best for their children.

What do you think of these bad dads? Do you think they had any good moments? Let us know in the comments!
