Top Five Kindest Moments

To celebrate World Kindness Day, and in light of recent events, I’ve looked at some of the kindest moments from the series to cheer us up.

1. Harry’s 11th Birthday

Anyway — Harry,” said the giant, turning his back on the Dursleys, “a very happy birthday to yeh. Got summat fer yeh here — I mighta sat on it at some point, but it’ll taste all right” (Sorcerer’s Stone 47).

Harry only had a few bright and happy moments before Hagrid banged on his door, gave him cake, and told him he was a wizard. This was certainly a fantastic and memorable night for him.

2. Dobby

Dobby was an innocent and kind character who put others before himself. His actions were a little misguided, but his intentions were admirable and noble. Harry returned Dobby’s help with a brilliant gesture of his own.

Got a sock,” said Dobby in disbelief. “Master threw it, and Dobby caught it, and Dobby — Dobby is free” (Chamber of Secrets 338).

It was brilliantly heartwarming to see Dobby escape from Lucius’s clutches.

3. Mrs. Weasley’s Christmas Present

My mom. I told her you didn’t expect any presents and — oh, no,” he groaned, “she’s made you a Weasley sweater” (Sorcerer’s Stone 200).

Mrs. Weasley is an amazing mother, not only to her own children but also to Harry. Finding out that Harry had never received any decent Christmas presents, she knitted him a sweater just like the ones she gave her children. This kind moment was one of many that she and Harry would later have.

4. SPEW

It’s S-P-E-W. Stands for the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare” (Goblet of Fire 224).

Hermione fought everyone to try and get equal rights for elves. Despite all the protestation, she did not believe that it was fair or kind to treat anyone like inferiors. Ultimately, she worked hard to improve the lives of many creatures.

5. Neville’s Heroic Attempt

Harry!” Neville burst out, the moment he saw the other two. “I was trying to find you to warn you, I heard Malfoy saying he was going to catch you, he said you had a drag —” (Sorcerer’s Stone 243).

This was one of the first impressions we had of Neville (other than him losing his toad), and it was a kind one. When he realized that Draco was going to get Harry and Hermione in trouble, he tried to help them, regardless of the consequences he would face. This first moment was only the beginning for heroic Neville.
