Seven Things That Could Have Happened If “Harry Potter” Characters Had Modern Technology

The Harry Potter series is set in its own magical world, so it’s easy to forget the Muggle context behind it. The series occurred in the ’90s, a time before smartphones, tablets, and Wi-Fi. Although anything electric doesn’t work at Hogwarts, imagine it did. What could have happened if Harry and everyone else had access to modern technology?

No More Owl Letters

Emails, texting, and messages would negate the need for letters to be sent by owls. This would be a lot more efficient, information might actually reach the recipient (instead of being stolen by a house-elf), and poor old Errol would get a break.

Shorter Library Sessions

If Google and e-books were available at Hogwarts, students would be able to find their information easier. Instead of reading the entire book, they could just search for the words they needed. Maybe the trio would have found about Nicholas Flamel, basilisks, and the Gillyweed faster.

They Wouldn’t Have Needed the Enchanted Galleons

Despite how clever Hermione’s idea was, they could have just created a Facebook or Whatsapp group chat to communicate.

Efficient Banking

Online banking makes life a lot easier. There’s no need to wait around for hours to withdraw money from the bank, and we can manage our money from our own home. It could have saved wizards and witches hours of errands.

Sirius Could Have Lived

Even though Harry had the magic mirror that would have worked as FaceTime or Skype, he forgot he had it. Nowadays, we never forget about our phones, and Harry could have used that to check on Sirius.

Certain Spells Would Be Useless

Although it would be amazing to perform spells, some of them would be made redundant. Instead of casting a spell to create light or send a message, they could just use their phones instead.

Hermione and Viktor Might Have Worked Out

Now that we have Skype, Whatsapp, Facebook, and FaceTime, it’s incredibly easy to get in touch with someone. Had Hermione and Viktor been able to use our technology, they may have been able to beat the long distance obstacle.

What do you think of my examples? Are there any other things that you think might have changed? Let us know in the comments!
