Top “Harry Potter” Sibling Moments

Happy National Siblings Day! In honor of this occasion, I looked at my top sibling moments from the Potter universe.

Newt and Theseus

Although there was a bit of rivalry between the two, these brothers loved each other immensely. This is especially evident when the two share a moment at the end of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. In a time of grief and pain, they were there to hold each other up.

NEWT shuffles over awkwardly to the bereft THESEUS. NEWT hesitates, struggling to find words of comfort. Then, for the first time in his life, he puts his arms around his brother. They hug.” (CoG 322)

Fred, George, and Ron

The first time we are really introduced to Fred and George Weasley is during Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The Weasley twins and Ron fly to Privet Drive and rescue Harry from his family. Not only did the twins help their little brother save his best friend, but they also risked their mother’s wrath to do so. This is definitely a great brotherhood moment.

‘But you can’t magic me out either —‘
‘We don’t need to,’ said Ron, jerking his head toward the front seat and grinning. ‘You forget who I’ve got with me.'” (CoS 25)

Ginny and Ron

Ron started Chamber of Secrets by helping Harry and ended it by saving his sister from the Chamber of Secrets and Tom Riddle’s power. From the moment he heard that his sister was in trouble, he did everything he could to save her.

‘Are you going somewhere?’ said Harry.
‘Er, well, yes,’ said Lockhart, ripping a life-size poster of himself from the back of the door as he spoke and starting to roll it up. ‘Urgent call — unavoidable — got to go —‘
‘What about my sister?’ said Ron jerkily.” (CoS 207)

Aberforth and Albus

Not much of the Dumbledores’ family life is known at the moment, so the relationship between Aberforth and Albus is one of the more hidden. So far, we have only learned a little bit from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The night that your [Aberforth’s] brother died, he drank a potion that drove him out of his mind. He started screaming, pleading with someone who wasn’t there. ‘Don’t hurt them, please . . . hurt me instead.’” (DH 567)

Albus wanted to protect his siblings and take the brunt of the pain. Unfortunately, he and Aberforth were never able to reconcile after Ariana’s death and improve their relationship.

Lily and Petunia

From Snape’s memories, it seems like Petunia and Lily had a close relationship as children.

‘I’m sorry, Tuney, I’m sorry! Listen —‘ She caught her sister’s hand and held tight to it, even though Petunia tried to pull it away. ‘Maybe once I’m there — no, listen, Tuney! Maybe once I’m there, I’ll be able to go to Professor Dumbledore and persuade him to change his mind!'” (DH 669)

It was only after Lily demonstrated her magical abilities that they started growing apart. Despite their troubled history, Petunia took Lily’s son in when she believed that he had nowhere else to go. Even though both she and Vernon hated magic, they put up with her nephew’s antics, all for her dead sister.

Queenie and Tina

We don’t know a lot about what they faced growing up, but they start the Fantastic Beasts films as being very close confidantes and friends. When Tina was in trouble at MACUSA, Queenie saved her and Newt.

QUEENIE: Shh! Teen’s in trouble, I’m trying to listen— (she reads Tina’s mind).” (FBaWtFT 218)

Let’s hope Tina returns the favor in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts movie.
