The Harry Potter Alliance Needs Your Help to Save the US Postal Service

Our own owl post, the United States Postal Service (USPS), is in trouble and needs our help! The USPS is currently facing unprecedented challenges, with an overall decline in its mail volume by one-third, due to the coronavirus crisis. Since the USPS is entirely self-funded and does not rely on any tax dollars, the loss of business and revenue has been especially devastating. Although advocates have been petitioning Congress for aid in the form of a stimulus bill, the initial grant was blocked by the Department of the Treasury.

The USPS is a crucial service that every American needs. It serves all regions regardless of profit and provides essential help, such as delivering life-saving medication to patients and submitting vote-by-mail ballots in states that allow registered voters to do so. As such, the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) is taking action to save the USPS and is asking volunteers to contribute to the Save Our Owl Post campaign. Using the postcard templates below, Americans are urged to contact their representatives to push for more funding for the USPS.

Save Our Owl Post for an Equitable Society
The Harry Potter Alliance asks activists to contact representative [sic] to save the U.S. Postal Service

The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) is taking action to save the US Postal Service by supporting a COVID-19 stimulus bill providing the United States Postal Service (USPS) with emergency funding.

Starting on April 23rd, the HPA is asking for Harry Potter fans around the country to contact their representatives, by phone, [by] text or even by mailing a letter through the post. Activists are then asked to share this action and recruit others to join them on social media by using #SaveOurOwlPost.

The U.S. Postal Service is our version of the owl post, a system that unites magical folk wherever they may be. Right now, [the] USPS is facing unprecedented challenges during the coronavirus outbreak, with an overall decline of a third of its mail volume.

[The] USPS is critical for an equitable society -- it’s required to provide “universal service,” meaning it must serve all regions no matter the profit; patients use it to safely access life[-]saving medication; voters rely on it to deliver and return absentee ballots and vote-by-mail ballots (an option that many voting rights advocates are highlighting as an option during the pandemic), and while we’re apart, mail is one way we’re staying in contact.

You may not realize it, but the USPS is entirely self[-]funded and does not rely on any tax dollars. Advocates and [the] USPS have been petitioning Congress for aid, and Congress has tried to comply with an initial grant that was blocked by the Treasury.

A privatized mail system is not an option in a just society, which is why we must #SaveOurOwlPost.

To join fan activists in their efforts to Save Our Owl Post, fans can head to granger2020.org and be sure to follow @thehpalliance on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Tumblr for all campaign updates!
