Tolkien defended and celebrated the fantasy genre in his scholarly essay “On Fairy-Stories.” We’ll consider whether J.K. Rowling’s series meets the rigorous criteria he set out for such literature – and, if so, what new light this sheds on the lasting meaning of Harry, Hogwarts, and the books we love.
