This month, the Harry Potter Alliance is hosting their annual book drive, called Accio Books! Having donated over 86,000 books to underpriveleged or underserved readers in the past, this year their goal is stronger than ever - they're teaming with Read Indeed to assist in the donation of one million books. From the announcement:

Read Indeed is a non-profit literacy organization and the vision of Maria Keller, a book-loving 7th grader who wants to collect and distribute 1 million books to needy kids by the time she’s 18. Maria is a huge Harry Potter fan and she has already donated over 800,000 books. We are very excited to assist her in reaching her goal of 1 million books.

In addition to various book drives being held across the country, some chapters of the Harry Potter Alliance are hosting alternative events, such as Loyola University of Chicago, whose student group The Alliance for Awesome is staging a 7-hour read-a-thon of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at their campus this Saturday. For more information on that particular gathering, you can visit their Facebook.

This month, consider donating a book for this great cause, and encourage the spread of reading throughout your community!

SUNY Geneseo's chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance, who call themselves Dumbledore's Army, was recently profiled in the Geneseo campus publication The Lamaron.

The Geneseo chapter has steadily worked its way up to student group status and is an ever-growing presence on the SUNY campus. Dumbledore's Army participates in service activities like the HP Alliance's April campaign Accio Books! and hosts Harry Potter related activities, like a Yule Ball and "A Very Potter Musical" screenings. Vice president Nicole Theal says of her time in Dumbledore's Army:

Being a part of this club is so rewarding. It is my favorite club and probably the smallest one I am involved in but I love the group of people involved.

Congratulations to the Geneseo chapter for working to make their community a better place through the power of love and Harry Potter!

Do you have a chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance on your campus? Be sure and use the comments to let us know what kind of work your chapter is doing! Even if there isn't a chapter at your school, considering taking part in the Accio Books! campaign this month, which provides books for underprivileged or underserved readers around the world.

“To my fellow members of the heterosexual community:

“White bigots have maintained they were right to keep blacks enslaved, killed, tortured, barred from voting, from restaurants, from certain sidewalks, and lunch counters, and bathrooms and bridges and yes, from marrying whites. But they lost. Just a few years ago, a bigoted white man refused to marry a couple in Louisiana because they are interracial. The spark of outrage has been so huge that the conservative governor of this Southern state has asked for this man’s resignation.

“Some Harry Potter fans have not liked what the HPA has to say about marriage equality. But I believe that those in the LGBTQ community will be granted that right. One day conservative governors from Southern states will look at those against marriage equality with the same disdain that the Louisiana conservative governor looked at those who opposed interracial marriage in 2009.

“And while there are many Harry Potter fans against equal marriage who have asked us to look at “both sides” of the argument, as if an argument had only two sides and that was it, I’d prefer it if you and I together could look at our privilege for being heterosexual in this society.

“We’ve never had to deal with the isolation of keeping a secret of our sexuality or gender identity. We’ve never had to reach for the courage to come out of the closet and face whatever isolation comes from that to say, ‘Mom and dad, I’m heterosexual or exactly the gender that you thought I was.’

“We’ve never had to again, and again, and again, when we meet people for the first time, wonder if they won’t like us if and when they find out that we’re heterosexual. We’ve never had to hear about heterosexuals murdered for being heterosexuals and to fear for our lives on account of our sexuality. We’ve never had to fear for our jobs based on our sexuality. We’ve never heard about heartbreaking tales of countless men who mainstream society allowed to die of AIDS without trying to do anything to help – because they were heterosexual.

“We’ve never had to be told that we have no right to marry a person that we love. That if they are dying in the hospital that we cannot visit them and that our children that we’ve been raising together could be removed from us and given to someone else. We’ve never been told that we are not allowed to adopt on the grounds that we are heterosexual.

“Such privilege could make us pause. Could make us realize that when we talk down to people who are in the LGBTQ community, when we deny them their rights, we are denying people who have done nothing but acted on courage that we have had the privilege to not have to reach for in regards to our sexuality. We are discriminating against people who by their very existence to the injustices bestowed upon them have shown true courage, bravery, and yes, MORAL fiber.

“We are discriminating against our doctors, our soldiers, our artists, our police, our teachers, our ministers, our rabbis, our neighbors, our sisters, our brothers, our parents, and anyone we know who is LGBGTQ, including potentially our own children and grandchildren. Let us not skewer those who are LGBTQ any longer against a cross of social crucifixion. Let us instead look at each other as equals and learn from each other and take the lessons that we have learned from Harry Potter about the power of love, to heart.

“Harry Potter’s eleven years living in a cupboard for his identity as a Wizard reminds us that no one should have to live inside of a closet for their identity. Dumbledore, and we as readers, understand with great sympathy those like Hagrid a half-giant and Lupin a werewolf, struggling to live in the closet because of their identity. Dumbledore allows for them to come to Hogwarts despite the objections of those who know of their identities – in the HPA we have spent years working to create an environment where those still living in and out of the closet because of their sexual orientation will not be legally subjected to existential intolerance and irrational prejudice.

“In Half-Blood Prince page 624, when in the middle of discussing the prospect of a marriage that would challenge the status quo’s “perfectly normal thank you very much” definition of “marriage” McGonagall says, “Dumbledore would have been happier than anybody to think that there was a little more love in the world.”

“I think we all know deep down that one of the reasons Harry Potter is so popular is because it artfully conveys a message that is so very needed at this time - that the forces of fear, intolerance, and hatred come and go but they are no match for the power of love. In the Harry Potter Alliance we are proud to be standing on the side of inclusion, Civil Rights, and love. Standing for equal marriage is therefore an obvious fit for us. We believe in building a society that demonstrates to this nation and to this world that human connection can be based on the expansive principles of love rather than the contracting delusions of fear. We believe in working hand in hand, for a world based on human rights as well as the right to be human.

“Let this be a truth that is echoed in the United States Congress, the Supreme Court, the Oval Office, and the desk of every journalist, politician, and preacher. Let it be a truth that echoes far beyond US borders, into every corner of our world.

“In the words of the greatest Wizard in the world, ‘Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.’ Let our hearts remain open and our aims be for a world where we all have that very basic right to be human.

“And in the words of Harry and the Potters and the Harry Potter Alliance, ‘The Weapon We Have Is Love.’

With Hope and Love,

Andrew Slack

A message from the Harry Potter Alliance:

The Harry Potter Alliance (HPA) is escalating their concern regarding Warner Bros. relationship to child slavery and serious violations of human rights. On their new website, showusthereport.com, the HPA is calling on Warner Bros. to stop hiding a report regarding the cocoa sourcing for Harry Potter chocolate.

In spring 2011, the HPA presented Warner Bros CEO Barry Meyer with:

  • a report by renowned human rights watchdog Free2Work giving their Harry Potter chocolate an "F" in human rights
  • evidence that child slavery in the Ivory Coast went into the sourcing of Harry Potter cocoa
  • over 16,000 signatures by teenage HP fans asking that all Harry Potter chocolate become Fair Trade

In response to the "F" in human rights, Warner Bros. told the HPA that they had conducted an internal report, proving that Harry Potter cocoa met their ethical sourcing guidelines. However, Warner Bros. refused to show the report to the HPA or give any reason why they would hide it.

showusthereport.com unites Harry Potter fans, Internet celebrities, and nerds of all stripes to ask Warner Bros. for full transparency. Inspired by Harry Potter's refusal to allow a short-sighted Ministry of Magic to co-opt his name, Harry Potter fans are similarly standing up to Warner Brothers. "We are prepared to use every facet of our network to stand up for transparency," says Slack. "Preventing us from seeing this report discourages young people from becoming engaged citizens. It's not healthy for democracy, our country, or our world."

The relationship between Warner Bros. and the HPA has not always been so contentious. In Fall 2010, Warner Bros. CEO Barry Meyer applauded the Harry Potter Alliance for their commitment to social responsibility and their support of those in need.

"This is not about hurting Warner Bros. or their business," says Slack. "Our only enemy here is and remains child slavery. As consumers of these products and as fans of Harry Potter, we have a right to see this report."

If you would like to demand transparency in this campaign, head on over to the Harry Potter Alliance website and join in the campaign Not in Harry's Name or any of the other campaigns they are currently running. You can be a member of Dumbledore's Army by getting involved and make the effort to better our world just as Harry made the wizarding world a better place to live.

In the words of J.K. Rowling, "We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better."

Project for Awesome is underway and the Harry Potter Alliance needs your votes now.

Hundreds of videos have been uploaded, nearly 300,000 comments have already been posted, and once again Nerdfighteria is changing the landscape of YouTube to raise awareness and money for dozens of worthy charities.

It's a simple formula: Project for Awesome raises hundreds of thousands of dollars through its amazing Indiegogo campaign. A bunch of super cool people make videos that highlight charities of their choosing. YouTube viewers watch the videos, spam them with comments, and vote for their favorites via the official Project for Awesome website. The charities with the most votes receive a portion of the funds raised through the Indiegogo campaign.

Last year, the HPA received enough votes to win $16,000. This year can be even better, but they need your help. You want to maximize your P4A awesomeness. The Harry Potter Alliance wants your votes.

As of now, there are eleven Project for Awesome videos that feature the Harry Potter Alliance. That's eleven opportunities for you to vote for us! We can totally beat last year's total if everybody votes for the HPA eleven times!

Check out ALL eleven videos right here!

Goodness gracious! We almost forgot to mention the most exciting thing: If you really want to make your votes count, you should donate to the Project for Awesome Indiegogo campaign! John and Hank have put together some incredible rewards that you can receive in exchange for your generous donation. Some prizes have already sold out, so don't miss out on your opportunity to snag something amazing!

Thank you for all of your support in this campaign!

Daniel Radcliffe’s tendency to prank his fellow Harry Potter cast-mates often added levity to the set, but there was at least one time when his antics went a little too far.

Reportedly, Robbie Coltrane, who portrayed Hagrid in the films, was once a victim of a prank where the young actor changed the settings on his friend’s phone from English to Turkish. The joke seems harmless enough—except that Coltrane was left unable to make calls!

The infuriated actor had a hard time finding anyone on set who could change the settings of his phone back to English, and Radcliffe was left feeling understandably sheepish about what he had done. Coltrane remembers the event clearly:

Eventually we found a girl in the Harry Potter make-up department who was Turkish Cypriot. She phoned her mum and was chatting away in great detail until they sorted it out. I think Daniel was so upset at what had happened that he wrote me that note...'Dear Mr. Coltrane, I'm sorry I changed your mobile telephone into Turkish...

Have you ever been part of a prank gone too far? Let us know in the comments!
