Official Concept Art:
Hogwarts | Hogsmeade | Owl's View of Park | Logo
Latest Developments (10 AM EST):
- Official park website now open; visitors can sign up for e-mail updates.
- JK Rowling: "The plans I’ve seen look incredibly exciting, and I don’t think fans of the books or films will be disappointed."
Universal Studios and Warner Brothers made a joint announcement this evening from Leavesden Studios on the set of Dumbledore's Office to reveal that a Harry Potter theme park is currently in development. The image to the left is the first piece of concept art for the park: Hogsmeade Village.
Here's what we learned from Potter set designer Stuart Craig and a representative from Universal Studios (both of them hosted the big reveal):
- "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort"
- Announcement was made live via internet at 12:01 AM EST today to select media, including MuggleNet.
- Areas of park to include Hogsmeade, Hogwarts Castle, and the Forbidden Forest.
- 20 engineers working on project.
- Universal came to WB looking for authenticity.
- Potter park to be built in "Islands of Adventure" area of Universal.
- Stuart wants to "take his grandchildren" to the park.
- Opening early 2010.
- Universal's Potter website to be available at this link.
- JK Rowling has been involved "since the very beginning" of the project. Also "supportive and encouraging."
- Stuart thinks that the park will be better off in the United States.
- Have been in design "for at least a year and a half."
- "Important that the theme park represents the entire saga from Book 1 to Book 7"
In a rather cute way to end the announcement, the Universal representative asks Stuart Craig, "Now where's Dumbledore?" Stuart paused for a moment, looked around the office, and replied, "He was just here."
We'll be discussing these developments on this week's episode of MuggleCast (due out over the weekend). This post will be updated frequently as we learn more!

In a new interview, Harry Potter movie producer David Heyman discusses how he "can't wait" for the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. On his life post-Potter, he says:
"It's a combination of sadness and excitement, I think—for Jo, and for all of us. This world has become a huge part of millions and millions of people's lives. We all love it so much, and I think, afterward, there will be a little hole in our lives for a while."

According to a new report released by several British film and tourism bodies, the location of scenes shot in the Harry Potter movies are among several recent films responsible for the boost in UK tourism.
"British films and television programs play a powerful role in showcasing the UK to the rest of the world and boosting tourism," said John Woodward, chief executive of the UK Film Council.
"There are countless examples of visitors flocking to locations they've seen in films or on TV and the effect can last for years."
The report also listed several other non-Potter films, including The Da Vinci Code, Gosford Park and Pride and Prejudice.

Warner Brothers has announced this evening that the Harry Potter series is the largest-grossing film franchise to date globally, surpassing Star Wars and and James Bond. Totaling $4.47 billion in ticket sales (with two films left to go, WB points out), several high-ups at Warner Brothers are quoted in the press release: In making the announcement, Alan Horn [President & Chief Operating Officer] said, “It would be an understatement to say we are proud of the success of the Harry Potter films. We also want to congratulate all of the extraordinary actors, filmmakers and artists who have shared this remarkable cinematic journey with us.”
Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution, said, “It is a thrill to see the Harry Potter franchise reach this unparalleled mark, and, with two movies yet to come, it is amazing to think what heights the franchise could reach by the end of the decade.
Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, Warner Bros. Pictures President of International Distribution, added, “This worldwide box office record once again proves that the appeal of the Harry Potter movies knows no border, no age limit, and no language barrier. Each of the five films has captured the hearts and sparked the imagination of audiences everywhere.” Of note, Variety has published an article comparing the Potter film franchise to the other big ones: Bond, which dates back to 1962, has generated $4.44 billion worldwide and the "Star Wars" pics have pulled down $4.23 billion since the first release in 1977. None of the tallies account for inflation or rising ticket prices.
And domestically the "Star Wars" franchise still far outpaces the boy wizard. All told, the "Star Wars" pics have grossed $2.18 billion, while the "Harry Potter" franchise has grossed $1.41 billion. But then there are still two more "Potters" to go.
And all three have generated millions upon millions in downstream ancillary coin for their studios, once homevideo and TV revenue are added into the tallies. To read the press release from Warner Brothers, click the link below.

In a new interview with Variety, Harry Potter producer David Heyman discusses what lies ahead for him after the last two films as well as what it has been like to work with actors both young and old. Heyman takes little credit for the development of the young stars citing their relationships with actors such as Gary Oldman and Maggie Smith:
"It's because of their commitment and curiosity to develop their craft. We've given them the platform, but they're here because they're good."

CBC News, based in Canada, is reporting that an Indian community is being sued over their replica of the Hogwarts castle. Made out of canvas and papier mâché, the castle was going to be used in an upcoming festival. However, a representative for the community groups claims they had no idea they needed to seek permission. From CBC:
The group had also hired artists to create a replica of the Hogwarts Express, the train that Harry Potter and his young wizard friends take to the school, as well as life-sized models of the main figures in the best-selling series of books.
The group has spent about $30,000 for its replica, called a pandal.
"It's just a theme.… We have also modelled the Titanic and no-one sued us," said another organizer, Robin Mukherjee.
A lawyer will try to fight the lawsuit on Friday. For the full story, click here.

As reported yesterday, a lawsuit was filed against an Indian community that had created a replica of Hogwarts castle to be used in an upcoming festival. Today, an Indian court rejected the claim made by author J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers for copyright breach.
"The group's lawyer said they argued that since the celebrations were held in the public interest and they were not for profit, the community did not need to pay compensation."
Neither court officials nor the lawyers for J.K. Rowling were immediately available for comment.

Sir Ian McKellen was recently interviewed by The Guardian where amongst other things he discusses Dumbledore vs. Gandalf, the character who he played in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
McKellen says that while he and Michael Gambon are close friends, the topic of "how to play a wizard" has never come up. And as far as if he would have taken over the role of Dumbledore from the late Richard Harris, McKellen said:
"People say to me, don't you wish you'd played Dumbledore? I say no! I played Gandalf! The original. There was a question as to whether I might take over from Richard Harris [Gambon's predecessor in the Dumbledore role], but seeing as one of the last things he did publicly was say what a dreadful actor he thought I was, it would not have been appropriate for me to take over his part." He smiles icily. "It would have been unfair."
When asked who would win the battle between Dumbledore and Gandalf, McKellen never hesitated, "Gandalf. Of course."

Sometimes WB wins some, and sometimes they lose some. The latter was the case this time when a Dehli, India courtroom turned down Warner Brothers' case claiming that the upcoming 'Hari Puttar' film was too close to the Potter brand. The BBC reports:
"The case has been dismissed. The court said that Warner Bros had known the title of the film since 2005 and had delayed bringing the case to court until the last moment," lawyer Pratibha Singh was quoted by news agency AFP as saying.
The Delhi High Court also said that consumers who read the Harry Potter books, written by JK Rowling, were sufficiently educated to know that Hari Puttar was different, the agency quoted the lawyer as saying.

With all the news concerning The Tales of Beedle the Bard there have been a few other things of note going on:
- Alan Rickman, who plays Severus Snape in the Potter series appeared Wednesday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He also did an interview with SciFi.com where he discussed his filming schedule and the impact of the final film:
"Well, it'll be a big finish, won't it? That's true, and appropriately. You can feel it now, the size of the undertaking."
The online magazine also got a hold of producer David Heyman where he discussed the delay of the sixth film and the impact of the decision to split Deathly Hallows.
- On Thursday, RDR Books officially withdrew its appeal of U.S. District Judge Patterson's decision to publish an unauthorized companion novel to the Potter series. J.K. Rowling's public relations agency issued the following statement:
"We are delighted that this matter is finally and favorably resolved and that J.K. Rowling's rights -- and indeed the rights of all authors of creative works -- have been protected," the statement said. "We are also pleased to hear that rather than continue to litigate, RDR have themselves decided to publish a different book prepared with reference to Judge Patterson's decision."
The Muskegon Chronicle goes on to say that in the new book the words "An Unauthorized Guide to Harry Potter Fiction and Related Materials" appears boldly below "The Lexicon" title and above author Steve Vander Ark's name. There is further explanation that neither Rowling nor a host of others with trademarks and other interests in the Harry Potter series had any part in the book.
- Finally, USA Today has written up a preview of ABC Family's Potter weekend which begins tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET. You can expect to see deleted scenes from Goblet of Fire as well as a look into Half-Blood Prince. The paper quotes producer David Heyman on the sixth film:
"It's different than the other films. It's not the non-stop action that some of the others are, although there is some action. It's more of an emotional film."

The Daily Mail recently conducted a new interview with Robert Hardy, the actor who plays Cornelius Fudge in the Potter series. In it, the 83-year-old discusses his role as the Minister for Magic, his working with Robbie Coltrane, Michael Gambon and Maggie Smith, as well as how he learned three times over that Fudge would not return for Half-Blood Prince.
"I loved my time as Cornelius Fudge, Minister for Magic, but my character has now been erased! I knew it would happen, because he's quite a good part in the book, but there was no way they were ever going to fit everything into one film."
He also joked about his age causing an insurance nightmare on set:
"The insurers for the Harry Potter films were insuring me for a massive amount of money and being extra reluctant about it. I could almost hear them saying, 'Is he worth it? He's broken most of his bones, he's had cancer and he might drop dead at any moment!'"

Entertainment Weekly has published a list of 20 characters who are the coolest heroes this world has ever seen. Harry Potter comes in at #4:
WHY HIM: Orphaned, cast out, and in the throes of adolescent hormonal revolt, J.K. Rowling's boy wizard (played by Daniel Radcliffe on screen) is the embodiment of the corny bumper sticker: Why be normal?
MOST HEROIC MOVE: Obliterating Voldemort by deploying his secret weapons: love, loyalty, and the good ol' Expelliarmus.
BIGGEST WEAKNESS: Misses his mommy and daddy.

In a follow-up to the story we brought you earlier, we now know that this week's issue of Entertainment Weekly features Harry and Voldemort on the cover.
Both are part of new lists by Entertainment Weekly: the Top 20 Heroes (Harry) and the Top 20 Villians (Voldemort... obviously). We showed you their entry on Harry earlier today, and we now have their entry on Voldemort (no new pics are found in the article):
8) Voldemort - Why Him: Cruel with no hope of redemption, Harry Potter's nemesis (Ralph Fiennes in the films) is an old-school unrepentant, power-hungry, control-freak. But his loathing for anyone who doesn't meet his definition of "normal" is utterly of the moment.
Most Evil Move: Killing Harry's parents.
Biggest Weakness: Motherly love.

As we all remember, it was back in late January when Harry Potter stuntman David Holmes was critically injured on the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows while rehearsing.
An investigation quickly followed, and The Telegraph is reporting today that the Health and Safety Executive told the Potter production team to improve the safety of its sets by the end of June:
A spokesman said: "The investigation is still ongoing. As a remedial act we have issued an improvement notice to the company asking them to improve the way they do stunt rehearsals using wires.
"They have got two months to look at that."
DDD Co Ltd has 21 days to appeal against the notice, the spokesman added.

Entertainment Weekly has a new feature looking at 17 characters who are deadly but charming, and Lord Voldemort has made their list thanks to the cast who play him in the films:
Known as the Dark Lord to those who dare not speak his name, this corrupted wizard represents ultimate evil in the world of J.K. Rowling's magical books. And as played by the regal Ralph Fiennes — with childhood assists from young actors like Christian Clouson, Frank Dillane, and Fiennes' own nephew, Hero Fiennes-Tiffin — it's easy to see how Voldemort could seduce anyone to the dark side.

Two of the Harry Potter films have made EMPIRE's "50 Greatest Ever Movies Sequels."
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix made it to the 15th spot while Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban made it to the 24th spot!
Here's what they had to said about Order of the Phoenix:
Why's it so good? David Yates took over the directing reins for this fifth film, based on the longest - and, some would say, dullest - book in the series, and knocked it out of the park. Excising large swathes of not much, he cut it down to one of the leanest films and delivered a barnstorming last act in the Ministry of Magic, with the sort of magical duels we'd been waiting four-and-a-half films to see.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince continues to move up the All-Time Worldwide Box Office list. The sixth film currently holds the No. 14 spot with $886.0 million, recently surpassing Chamber of Secrets, which stands at No. 15 with $878.6 million.
The movie seems well on its way to the top 10, and stands just $10 million shy of Goblet of Fire. Other Potter films in the top 10 include Sorcerer's Stone at No. 5 ($974.7 million) and Order of the Phoenix at No. 7 ($938.2 million).

All the actors are understandably sad that filming for the franchise is slowly coming to the end, and Robbie Coltrane is no different. He plays Hagrid in the series and recently spoke to the Radio Times about it:
"We were all going - 'Yeah, it's gonna be tough on the kids...'"
"Then eventually we were all saying 'Yeah, it's gonna be pretty tough for me too'."
The actor admits one thing he will not miss when filming ends is the beard he has to wear for his role as Hagrid.
"It's all horrible. But at the end of the day, they take it off and then two girls come to my trailer with a pot of hot oil, they dissolve the beard, rub my face with oil." he said.
Thanks for the tip, Adam!

Celebrating the release of the new book-to-film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, TIME Magazine has a new feature looking popular books turned into popular films.
The Harry Potter series is of course included on this list:
Though J.K. Rowling's 1997 book had already sold hundreds of thousands of copies by the time Hollywood released its first Potter film, Sorcerer's Stone turned the boy wizard into an international pop icon virtually overnight. The movie earned close to $1 billion at the box office and guaranteed that the remaining books in the series would find their way to the big screen. The last installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II, is expected to be released in the summer of 2011.
See the entire list - which looks at Willy Wonka, Stuart Little, and many others - at this link. Thanks to Vivi for the tip!

MTV has an interesting article looking at how the creators of the upcoming film X-Men: First Class are using Potter as an example of what they want to do:
"Harry Potter is a bit of a role model for us, absolutely," she said. "But we want it to be like the recent, darker Potters. It should not be a kiddie movie—we're in the 'X-Men' world so you can't suddenly change the tone."
Even the film's cast of characters will follow Potter's footsteps insofar as getting into mischievous adventures that Xavier wouldn't approve of.
"There's nothing more interesting than a bad kid, and this is full of naughty children," said Donner. "Cyclops, for example—he's a tough kid that bobbed from foster home to foster home, until he ends up at the school and becomes the leader."
Are they copy cats or coming up with an original idea?

In a new interview with The Sunday Express, actor David Bradley, who plays Argus Filch in the Potter movies disputed recent reports that some of the younger stars on set have let fame go to their heads.
"You wouldn't even know that they had made the money they have. Their parents and the people looking after them keep them grounded. They don't disappear off to their trailers in between bits, they hang around and chat like the rest of us. Those kids work really hard. I really admire them."
"Nobody's pulling rank on this one. We all have nice trailers and they all look about the same size."
Bradley notes, just like everyone else, he is sad to see the series come to a close. Thanks to Snitch Seeker!

Last week, we told you about a new Harry Potter: Spells app that would be released for iPhone/iPod touch customers.
Thanks to Michael, we've learned that the app is now available in the iTunes store! It can be purchased for $4.99 and features the ability to turn your iPhone/iPod touch into a wand! You can duel your friends, learn spells, and a lot more. Visit the website for the app at this link.
If you get the app, let us know what you think in the comments!
MY MINI REVIEW: At best, this app is very difficult to use. The app requires a very specific movement for each spell. I failed 30 - 40 times before I passed each one (these include the very first spells you learn where you just have to move your phone left or right).
To perform a spell, you must put your thumb on the screen, make the physical movement, and remove your thumb. Apparently you need perfect timing, orders, and physical motion to be successful.
The app would repeatedly say to me "Too fast", "Too slow", or "Try again". I can't believe how difficult it is to successfully cast just one. Maybe I'm just a bad wizard?
Don't buy the app unless you have a lot of patience and a strong arm.

As we move toward 2010, The Telegraph is taking a look back at the top 100 books of the past decade. Coming in at No. 1 is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The entry reads:
If you don’t know what a Muggle is by now, you’re either Rip van Winkle or enormously stubborn. This is the seventh and final instalment in Rowling’s record-breaking series about Harry Potter, the world’s most famous lightning-scarred boy wizard and his tribulations with Lord Voldemort. We’ve seen Harry grow from a spindly, messy-haired 11-year-old into a heroic young adult. Children have grown up with him, finding in his battles metaphors for their own. This volume alone sold 15 million copies in the first 24 hours after it was published. Whether wickedly skewering suburbia, or bringing Harry, Ron and Hermione into mortal danger, Rowling is never less than absorbing. Some may sneer at her books, but they are triumphant sagas about the defeat of evil that tap into our basic hunger for stories. Most importantly, she makes reading a 700-page book seem easy. This one even has a quotation from Aeschylus as its epigraph. It stands as a cornerstone of the decade, a melding of high and low culture that appeals to all ages and nations.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone came in at No. 41 on the top 100 films of the past decade list. Do you think Deathly Hallows deserves the top spot?
Thanks to Leaky!

Entertainment Weekly has released a new "Best of Decade" feature, which looks at the top entertainment people, books, films, etc of the past 10 years. Harry Potter took three spots in the various lists.
- Best Books - #8 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - The fourth Potter novel was the darkest yet, forcing poor Harry to contend with Death Eaters run amok and the loss of a major character. That it also encompasses some of the series' most purely fun moments of escapism is proof of Rowling's versatile gifts.
- Entertainer of the Year - #1 - Harry Potter - The Entertainer of the Decade is obviously Harry Potter — a franchise that covers all the cultural bases, selling books, movie tickets and merchandise. Fans whip up butterbeer batches, obsess over John Williams' iconic score, even listen to ''wizard rock.''
- Entertainers of the 2000s - JK Rowling - As 1999 came to a close, J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter were already household names — as long as those households contained literate children with a voracious appetite for fantasy fiction. In 2000, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire — the fourth book in the British author's seven-book cycle — ignited a global pop phenomenon that got the attention of all readers, young and young at heart.

As Potter fans, we know that the franchise has had a huge impact financially on various companies who own rights to the Harry Potter brand. Now, The Economist has an article online looking at the success of those companies.
Despite claiming that the series is "not great literature," the article is still a good read. A sample:
In fact the Harry Potter books were the iceberg. As each book appeared it drew new readers to the series and expanded sales of earlier books in a snowball effect. Thanks largely to the boy wizard, Bloomsbury’s turnover, which had gradually increased from 11m pounds in 1995 to 14m pounds in 1997, took off. In 1999 it stood at 21m pounds. Two years later it was 61m pounds. By the middle of this decade, with Bloomsbury’s revenues above 100m pounds, rival publishers were griping that there was no point bidding against the firm for a children’s title. So far the books, which are published in America by Scholastic, have sold more than 400m copies worldwide. Not all were read by the young. Central to the books’ success was a repackaging, with a darker cover, for adults embarrassed about being seen reading a children’s book.
There are also comments from Potter producer David Heyman, who says that filming for Deathly Hallows will wrap in May. This is in line with other recent comments targeting a late Spring/early Summer release. Thanks to Amanda for the tip!

AOL Moviefone has released a list detailing what they believe are the best films of the decade, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban takes 10th place:
During his third year at Hogwarts, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) learns that Lord Voldemort's acolyte Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped Azkaban prison with an eye toward making Harry's "Boy That Lived" moniker an overstatement. No worries, Harry's friends Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermoine Granger (Emma Watson) are on hand to help him sort out the shifting allegiances -- and shapes! -- in a tale where nothing is as it seems. Darker than the first two Potter films, to legions of fans the third installment of J.K. Rowlings' juggernaut may or may not be the best of the bunch; but, really, what Muggle wouldn't enjoy this.
Do you agree that out of all the Potter films, this is the best one? Personally, I'd put Order of the Phoenix or Half-Blood Prince on this list instead. Thanks to Rory for the tip!

Since the very first Harry Potter film began filming at Leavesden Studios a decade ago, Harry Potter fans have hoped that one day they'd be able to visit the real Harry Potter sets themselves.
Lucky fans (and press) have received the opportunity, and now it looks like Warner Brothers may open it up to visitors in the future. From the Financial Times:
A person familiar with the plans said Warner Brothers wants to make Leavesden a European hub for post-production, including visual effects, animatronics and film editing in the UK, and believes that it will attract film business to the country.
The proposal also includes a plan to allow members of the public to visit, by appointment, the sets of films made at Leavesden, including the great hall from the Harry Potter series.
The Great Hall is one of very few sets that have remained in tact at Leavesden since Sorcerer's Stone filming. Other classic sets include Dumbledore's Office and the Gryffindor common room.
Official announcements likely won't be seen for a while, but as always, we'll keep you updated! Thanks to Snitch Seeker for the tip.

It was a few weeks ago when we reported that plans were underway to turn Leavesden Studios - the huge complex where all eight Harry Potter films have been shot - into a full on studio and keep a permanent Harry Potter area for fans who'd like to see the real sets.
The Watford Observer is reporting this evening that those plans have now been approved and finalized:
Warner Brothers, which has brought world-wide fame to the former aerodrome complex with its Harry Potter franchise, can now begin a programme of redevelopment worth an estimated 100 million pounds – creating hundreds of jobs and providing a boost to the local economy.
The company, which will now purchase the site outright and use it as its European filming base, will build new film stages, production and administration facilities.
It will also open a Harry Potter themed visitor attraction to cater for up to 5,000 visitors a day.
The article also says the Harry Potter visitor attraction will open in 2012. Read more at this link!
Will you visit Leavesden to see lots of Harry Potter sets?!

We're learning more details this evening about the Leavesden Studios "Hogwarts Experience" that will be added to the place where all eight Potter films have been shot over the past decade.
As we've reported previously, the Hogwarts Experience will be a way for fans to get up closer and personal with the real sets and costumers that the Harry Potter cast and crew used.
New details have emerged by way of The Times:
...it will provide fans with the real costumes and sets used in the films.
There will be replicas of characters, as well as clothes worn by Hermione Granger, played by Emma Watson, Voldemort, Rubeus Hagrid, Professor Filius Flitwick and the Weasley family.
The centre will also showcase the craft and technical skills needed for a successful film franchise. Britain has a world-leading reputation in these fields.
Warner is to spend more than £100m on buying Leavesden, which it currently rents, and on expanding the site, as well as creating the set tour for fans.
No word yet on when the attraction will open. As always, we'll keep you updated. Will you be interested in checking out the "Hogwarts Experience"?

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Harry Potter is creeping up on the Star Wars franchise's $2 billion bank:
The "Star Wars" films have earned $4 billion worldwide, and sales of merchandise account for another $20 billion.
But in calculating its latest list of the most lucrative film franchises, Forbes magazine used only domestic box-office figures, and it did not adjust for inflation.
Still, the franchise born 33 years ago when tickets cost only $2.23 apiece is No. 1, having earned $2 billion domestically. At second, the Harry Potter franchise has taken in $1.7 billion, and with two films remaining it's poised to overtake "Star Wars," but perhaps only temporarily if the "Star Wars" 3D rerelease goes as planned.
While we're on the Star Wars subject, be sure to check out our Harry Potter VS Luke Skywalker comparison page.

We've long known that critically acclaimed director Steven Spielberg was involved with the Harry Potter franchise early on, but now we're learning some interesting new details.
The below comments were revealed by Warner Brothers President Alan Horn in an interview with The Los Angeles Times:
“I did think it would be worthwhile for Steven Spielberg to direct,” Horn said. “We offered it to him. But one of the notions of Dreamworks’ and Steven’s was, ‘Let’s combine a couple of the books, let’s make it animated,’ and that was because of the [visual effects and] Pixar had demonstrated that animated movies could be extremely successful. Because of the wizardry involved, they were very effects-laden. So I don’t blame them. But I did not want to combine the movies, and I wanted it to be live action.”
We love Spielberg, but a live action version of the films was a much, much better choice!

A new article in Saturday's New York Times features Harry Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves and his decade's work on the highest-grossing franchise of all time.
"'I took my cues from Jo,' Mr. Kloves said, speaking of Ms. Rowling. 'The first day I met her, she said: 'I know the movies can't be the books. All that I ask is that you be true to the characters.' And I believe I've fulfilled that request.'"
In "A Screenwriter's Hogwarts Decade," Kloves talks about how after swimming in the narrative for decades he began to anticipate certain events: including Snape's true allegiance and the fact Dumbledore was gay.
He admits he did have a few missteps. He believed Hermione was going to die and de-emphasized the character of Dobby early on, to which J.K. Rowling told him he may want to revisit his scenes.
"'If you can get her to talk about it, it's so remarkable what she knows,' he said. 'I once e-mailed her and asked her what were the 12 uses of dragon's blood and she wrote back in 30 seconds what they all were.'"

Jo had told Dan he had done such a great job in Deathly Hallows that she'll do him a favor of not writing more Harry Potter books.
After revealing that bit of info, Dan quickly clarified he's sure she'll continue to write -- just not about Harry.

Terri responds to each question in the debate, including comparing the two fandoms, discussing the book-to-screen adaptations, and as far as standing the test of time? Well, she says, Potter's got a theme park!

Last week, we posted an article from the Los Angeles Times, which wondered whether or not Warner Bros. would push Deathly Hallows for Oscar consideration.
With just one film left, the newspaper has followed up with a story that makes a strong argument for the highest-grossing franchise of all time. Los Angeles Times Television Critic, Mary McNamara writes:
"The academy is notorious for thumbing its nose at the fantasy genre, but six films with no wins is an outrage. Maybe the penultimate 'Deathly Hallows' can cast its spell on voters."
She goes on to say:
"Think about it. Six films and no Oscars. None. Moving staircases, talking pictures, heart-stopping Quidditch games, villains that scare even adults and no Oscars. There have been nominations — for art direction, score and costume — but no wins, which, frankly, is hard to fathom. How could none of these films have won for costume? Screenwriter Steve Kloves, an Oscar nominee for "Wonder Boys," has adapted all but one of the books, a feat unprecedented in the annals of the Writers Guild, and he's never been nominated for them. Ditto any of the directors. Or actors."
What do you think? Should the Potter films finally be recognized by the Academy?

In a new interview, Senior VFX Supervisor Tim Burke discussed his work on the Harry Potter films.
On the hardest parts of Deathly Hallows - Part 1:
"The creatures and Dobby. People had to relate to Dobby, to empathize with Dobby to believe he would die. People are used to seeing good and bad CG characters. If Dobby didn't look like he had a soul, we would have lost the emotional moment at the end of the film."
"The hardest shots were the abstract and conceptual shots of the destruction of the evil horcrux creature. It was a lot of work for Rising Sun. What does it look like to rip a soul apart? David Yates had it in his head toward the end of shooting, and we had to invent something."
On some challenges with the final installment:
"For 'Part 2,' we've done away with Hogwarts. It was such a major job to stage the battle of Hogwarts, and we had to do it in different stages of production. We had shots with complex linking camera moves from wide overviews, to flying into windows and interior spaces. So we took the plunge at the end of 2008 and started rebuilding the school digitally with Double Negative."

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban has been named film of the decade at the First Light Awards.
The award is voted for by the public in association with the Bafta Kids' Vote, and is chosen by children aged five to 15.
"We made the film for children of all ages from from to 105 really, but clearly a core part of our audience is young people and to be honoured is a privilege," said producer David Heyman.
Heyman accepted the award from Clemence Poesy, the actress who has played Fleur Delacour in several Potter films.
Prisoner of Azkaban was up against Shrek, Whale Rider, Happy Feet and Up.

In a new article posted today by MovieLine, J.K. Rowling revealed how apprehensive she was at handing the keyboard over to screenwriter Steve Kloves for the movie adaptation of her magical world.
Rowling recalls how one simple word put her mind at ease and her trust never waivered from that point on. Here is what JK Rowling revealed:
Steve turned to me while food was being ordered and said quietly, "You know who my favorite character is?" I looked at him, red hair included, and thought: You're going to say Ron. Please, please don't say Ron - Ron's so easy to love! And he said: "Hermione." At which point, under my standoffish, mistrusting exterior, I just melted. Because if he got Hermione, he got the books. He also, to a large extent, got me.
Steve Kloves also revealed in a separate interview in Written By, people are going to be "surprised" with the final film. "It's pretty amazing."
Are you excited for the final film now? Leave us your comments here.

In anticipation of its 36-page feature on Harry Potter, Empire Magazine continues to release written and video interviews online.
Tonight, they have released a letter from Alan Rickman, the actor plays Professor Severus Snape to author J.K. Rowling. In it, he discusses how he has just returned from speaking into a microphone as Snape for the final time. He cannot believe how fast time has passed.
"Three children have become adults since a phone call with Jo Rowling, containing one small clue, persuaded me that there was more to Snape than an unchanging costume, and that even though only three of the books were out at that time, she held the entire massive but dedicate narrative in the surest of hands."

Businessweek.com recently spoke with Warner Bros. chairman Barry Meyer about the Harry Potter series. He talks about his studio's 10-year, 8-movie, $7 billion run.
On first agreeing to take on the project, Meyer admits:
"Making a big movie about a British schoolboy didn't seem like a slam-dunk."
On the spacing of the films:
"We decided to set a pace that had never really been done with a multiple-movie franchise. Jo Rowling had only written a few of the books at that point. We didn't know if the cast would stay together but we wanted to make it possible for the kids to be in all the movies. You can't rush it; with each book, the kids get a year older. But you also can't make Harry Potter when Daniel Radcliffe is 35 years old."
On the fans:
"When you do this kind of movie, you're always sensitive to the fan base. Everyone has their own vision of Hogwarts until we present it on film, so it had better be good. We got thousands of letters in the first movie because we made a mistake about where we put the scar on Harry's head. With Harry Potter, you can get the audience. The key is to deliver."

As the staff of Celebuzz.com are all Harry Potter fans, they've recently compiled a list of actors from the United States who they think would be the perfect substitutes for the notable European ones we all know and love.
We feel Brad Pitt seems like an odd interpretation of Professor Lupin. But what do you think? Would this be a good movie?

According to Deadline Hollywood, Harry Potter will be leaving home video shortly following the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 on Blu-Ray and DVD. From Deadline:
Burbank, CA – October 24, 2011 – Harry Potter, the #1 motion picture franchise of all time, will soon disappear from shelves, as Warner Bros. stops shipping all Harry Potter theatrical film titles (including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows™ – Part 2, and Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Collection) as of December 29, 2011 (moratorium does not include digital – Electronic Sell-Through & VOD – or games).
This news means that there will be a limited window in which to pick up your copy of Deathly Hallows, Part 2 or the eight-film collection this holiday season, as stock will not be replenished following the December 29th deadline. The eighth film, and the entire collection, are only becoming available on November 11th in the US, and December 2nd in the UK.
Hypable, a fandom news site, has been following this story closely and Andrew Sims has written an opinion article on why Warner Bros. is making a mistake with doing this to the Potter franchise.
So whether you're a first-time owner of the films on home video, or simply need to replace the worn-out discs in your collection, the end of 2011 seems to be the best time to buy for Potter fans.
Thanks to Hypable for the tip!

Earlier today, MuggleNet staff member Eric Scull had a chance to sit down with Harry Potter director David Yates as part of the Harry Potter Home Entertainment Celebration in Orlando, Florida.
One of the topics of discussion was the recent push for Deathly Hallows - Part 2 at the 2012 Academy Awards. Here is what David Yates had to say:
"We're starting a campaign to try and push it and WB is doing a really great job at that. We're going to do some junkets and some press stuff to help that process. I think the film deserves a bit of Oscar attention - the visual effects, Stuart's [Craig] design, Alexandre's [Desplat] music, David Heyman and David Barron as producers have done this extraordinary job.
David Heyman, in particular has made eight of the most successful movies of all time with this enormous, popular reach. And critically, the films have always been given a reasonably good ride. We got a great response to the last one - I think, one of the best reviewed movies of the year.
So you kind of say, 'Come on guys, it's time to the step up to the plate!" and acknowledge that there is a lot of good work from a lot of good people that has gone into this movie and these movies. I hope the Davids... that sort of 10, 15 years of incredible input and output is somehow acknowledged.
We've always been ignored slightly, and we're all totally cool about it, equally. Let me say that. It's very important. But we're going to to go all out and get some Oscar buzz. We're very zen-like in our attitude toward the Oscars. Having been overlooked so many times before, we kind of fully expect to be overlooked again. But that doesn't mean we're not going to go without a fight."
Yates also didn't seem opposed to Eric's suggestion of getting the fans involved.
"That would be cool! You can be our guerilla campaign. We need to bring you guys in to help with the cause!"

A new article from On The Box has examined some of our favorite characters from the books that didn't make it into the movies.
While the filmmakers had to keep the story focused on Harry's journey throughout the eight films while also keeping them around the two and a half hour mark, some of our favorite characters had to be sacrificed 'for the greater good.'
The list shows a few characters that were actually cast for the films but were ultimately cut. One notable character missing from their list however, is Peeves the Poltergeist, who was actually cast for the first film and was going to be played by Rik Mayall.
What character did you miss not seeing on the big screen? Let us know in the comments below.

In a brilliant article inside Architectural Digest, Stuart Craig gives an exclusive look at the sets used in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Parts 1 and 2 films.
Twelve significant set design elements were looked at by the magazine in complete detail, and we found the reasons and methods used by production designer, Stuart Craig, to be completely ingenious.
On Shell Cottage:
The seventh 'Harry Potter' movie ends on the beach outside Bill and Fleur Weasley's Shell Cottage, and the new film gives a look at the house itself. 'I try to find a logic for whatever the set is and somehow I felt it was wrong for [Shell Cottage] to be too whimsical, too fanciful,' says production designer Stuart Craig. 'So this cottage has a logic. If you really wanted to build a house on the beach, what would you do? Well, you would use local materials. And the local materials would be either rocks or seashells. The walls are huge oyster shells and the roof is made of big scallop shells. You can see how scallop shells can lend themselves to overlapping and shedding water. I was kind of pleased with the logic underlying the structure that we had found there."
Additional set designs:
These designs by Stuart Craig are just another reason he should have a great shot at winning an Oscar at the Academy Awards next month.

While this isn't your typical Harry Potter news item, we thought we would have a little fun and help promote two of the Harry Potter stars with their current projects.
Each year MTV hosts a movie of the year bracket competition, called the MTV Movie Brawl, to see which new movie release the fans are looking forward to seeing for that year. This year, since we don't have a new Harry Potter movie coming out, let's help out some of our Potter favorites win the championships.
Emma Watson - who portrayed Hermione Granger in the Potter series - has a feature movie being released this year called The Perks of Being A Wallflower. This movie is currently ranked at the No. 6 position in the brawl and will be facing off against the No. 3 seeded, The Hobbit, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings phenomenon. Vote for The Perks of Being A Wallflower and let's see if we can't take down the odds on favorite Middle Earth.
Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter himself in the fim series - has his latest project, The Woman in Black, coming out February 10th. Currently ranked No. 7 in its respective MTV Brawl Division, it is going up against the No. 2 seeded, Snow White and the Huntsman. We think The Woman in Black should scare the heck out of Snow White in this round.
If both The Perks of Being A Wallflower and The Woman In Black win this round, they will be facing off against each other in the next round. That would make for an interesting matchup.
Can one of our Harry Potter alums win the championship of the MTV Movie Brawl? We will with your help! Cast your votes right here!
