The Sunday Mirror is reporting this morning that a Harry Potter-themed musical is currently in the works. To open in London's West End, the article says producers are working on several script ideas and believe it has huge potential:
"The difficulty is condensing the seven books into a manageable show. They are exploring various ideas. One possibility is to tell the whole story. Another is to just take a single plot."
While very interesting, the Sunday Mirror says that producers hope to have the show open next year. Unless this musical has been in the works for some time, there is very little chance that it could open in only 1 - 2 years time. So with that, put this in the "very very big rumor" category for now until more whispers start floating around. Thanks to those who e-mailed with the link!

According to a new report released by several British film and tourism bodies, the location of scenes shot in the Harry Potter movies are among several recent films responsible for the boost in UK tourism.
"British films and television programs play a powerful role in showcasing the UK to the rest of the world and boosting tourism," said John Woodward, chief executive of the UK Film Council.
"There are countless examples of visitors flocking to locations they've seen in films or on TV and the effect can last for years."
The report also listed several other non-Potter films, including The Da Vinci Code, Gosford Park and Pride and Prejudice.

On its spectacularly stunning *fifth birthday*, MuggleNet's premiere fan-interactive segment The Crazy Caption Contest is given a new title... 'version 2.0'!
First begun in 2002 by webmaster Emerson Spartz himself, this segment has since grown into the mighty MuggleNet's largest and most fan-interactive segment throughout these many years of Potter. To celebrate, the contest has been given a *double dose* of fan interactivity, as all visitors now have the opportunity to vote on each week's winners. Not only this, but voting has been made available on every one of the contest's 250-week lifespan, creating hours of hilarious fun to be had in reading and 'judging' the winners of the past!
There has never been a better time than now to check out this cool segment on MuggleNet, and become hooked! We are VERY proud to bring such a cool renovation to the section that has been loved increasingly for the past five years, and which may very well continue for a few more.

London Theatre Guide is currently listing a show called "Potted Potter - The Unofficial Harry Experience" which is due to open at the Trafalgar Studios 2 Theatre in the West End on December 17th. The show promises "endless costumes, songs, ridiculous props and a little magic, with a special appearance from a very frightening fire-breathing dragon, and even a game of Quidditch involving the audience". It will use elements from all seven of the books and condense them into a sixty minute performace.
The production, which is performed entirely by two people, appears to be aimed at children aged six and above, and will run until January 5th 2008. Thanks for the tip, Steven!

On last night's episode of Saturday Night Live, there were two big mentions of Albus Dumbledore's recent sexuality revelation. The first came during the weekly bit called "Weekend Update." One anchor reported the revelation, followed by the punchline "Even worse, he now has Hog Warts."
The second came in a segment where JK Rowling is being interviewed about Dumbledore on CNN's Larry King Live. She tells Larry that several scenes were cut from the movie which gave away his sexuality. Each of the scenes were then played, focusing around Dumbledore telling McGonagall about his man love problems.

According to an article in USA Today, Quidditch is the latest sport being played in colleges across the US - the first intercollegiate match was held earlier this month. One student from Middlebury College, VT said:
"Quidditch is one of the most creative things that came out of the books. We were able to create that here, follow all the rules, except the ability to fly. It just caught on."
In order to make the game work, the Snitch is replaced by a young man, who runs around the pitch at "lightning speed" and, although the players obviously lack the ability to fly, brooms are still carried around for show; these in fact have been supplied by Alivan's, MuggleNet's primary sponsor.
This modified version of the sport has been described as a cross between rugby, dodge ball and soccer.

If you don't celebrate Christmas, then we hope you have/had a Happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Eid, or even if you worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster, we hope you have/had a wonderful time celebrating that, too!
Aaaaaaaand in the spirit of the holidays, here are Christmas layouts for you to feast upon! If, uh, you eat layouts... that is. Or even if you don't. We don't judge here.

On one final note...

The Pickle Pack Reindeer also wishes you and your family the best of holidays! The Pickle Pack Reindeer's long and storied history, for those of you who have asked, goes back many, um, seconds ago, when I found the image on Google and decided Pickle Pack could use its own reindeer. (My sense of humor has gone way downhill.)
LASTLY: Want some more holiday fun? A few of the MuggleCasters compiled this holiday greetings video. Enjoy!

We are very happy to break the news that Jim Dale, narrator of the US Potter books, will be presenting at HPEF's Portus 2008 this July! Portus representative Aziza Aba Butain talks about how excited they are to be hosting him:
"We've just confirmed that Jim Dale, the amazing "reader" of all the HP audio books for the US , Broadway icon and the narrator of ABC's new hit series "Pushing Daisies", will be presenting at Portus in July. This will be Jim Dale's first HP conference. We're all very excited and honored to have a guest so involved with the series be apart of Portus's Programming. Mr. Dale is quite the dynamic, accomplished speaker and we can't wait for Portus to arrive.
Portus's monthly newsletter, The Portal, will be updating soon with the latest on Jim's programming. This will, undoubtedly, be a must-see conference for Harry Potter fans. We cannot wait to find out what Portus and Jim Dale have to offer!
If you're interested in attending Portus, you must register! Visit Portus2008.org for more information. Don't forget, MuggleCast will also be hosting a podcast at the conference as part of their Podcast Palooza. This is one conference that you definitely will not want to miss!

All of us here at MuggleNet hope you have the most joyful of holidays, whether you celebrate Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Eid, or you worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster (we believe in tolerance of all types here).
The Pickle Pack Reindeer has a personal message for all of you: 'ubbuuh hhaaww gauw auubaa aiuwh gnuhhh ahda' ... I don't speak reindeer (I speak whale) so I'll leave you to translate.
For those of you who were wondering, the Pickle Pack Reindeer's storied history goes way back to last Christmas when, moments before making my Christmas post, I decided Pickle Pack could use a reindeer after I found this ridiculous pic on Google.
The warm and fuzzy Christmas layout is a present from Dylan, our graphics designer. Don't you just want to dive in to that photo?

ESPN.com recently featured a recent trend in colleges around the country--Muggle Quidditch. The article focuses on two crafty college students who figured out ways to play the game, despite the setbacks of being non-magical, and wrote a book entitled "Intercollegiate Quidditch Rules and Guide-Book."
"If you have opened this book, chances are you are least partly interested in playing Quidditch. And anyone who is at least partly interested can all too easily become as passionate about it as I am."
"Quidditch is something that makes people undeniably happy," the intro continues. "The childlike freedom that comes with playing and watching it is something unprecedented."

Bill O'Reilly: Draco Malfoy

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert: Fred and George Weasley

Baylor University released an article today looking at the role Harry Potter may have on newspapers and journalism.
"The books present an unnecessarily pessimistic view of journalism today," says Dr. Amanda Sturgill, senior lecturer in journalism at Baylor and one of the study co-authors. "Since literature can play an important role in helping children learn and possibly empathize with situations experienced by the characters, the potential for influence on journalism is strong."
What do you think? Are Rita Skeeter and the Daily Prophet adding to the already declining credibility/opinion of newspapers and journalism?

A giant crop circle that looks like an owl has been found in a field in Wiltshire, UK, and there are theories that it's a tribute to Hedwig.
Steve Killick, a Harry Potter fan, said: "It is very exciting to think that there are fans of Harry from other galaxies.
"Most of the world has fallen in love with Harry Potter so it makes sense that most of the universe will do eventually too."
Pattern expert Karen Alexander dismissed the claims: "The owl is an ancient symbol of wisdom, so perhaps it is a message to people that we should be thinking deeper about the world around us.
"This is obviously a time of some upheaval in the world so perhaps this is a sign that we should be looking backwards for some wisdom in how to deal with today's problems, rather than anything to do with Harry Potter."
Karen Alexander is a party pooper. See the crop circle here, and thanks to Cassie for the tip.

We all know that there have been numerous attempts at a real life invisibility cloak in the Muggle world, but here's a new one: in the next issue of Entertainment Weekly, CBS will be publishing video ads within the printed magazine itself! Daily Prophet and/or moving portraits much? From the Financial Times:
The cost of the full-motion video ad was not disclosed, but it will be far more expensive than traditional print ads, according to executives familiar with the technology, developed by a US company called Americhip.
The willingness to spend on such a promotion highlights the radical means marketers are employing to reach consumers at a time when a growing number of people are using new technologies such as digital video recorders to avoid ads.
"It's part of the future - a way to engage consumers in new and surprising ways," said George Schweitzer, president of CBS marketing group. "How do you sample a drink? You give them a taste."
Unfortunately, the ads will only be issues delivered to New York and Los Angeles residents. If anyone can send in video of this impressive feat, please do send it in to us!

In a speech to the schoolchildren of America, President Obama mentioned Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling to remind kids of the power of perseverance. As The Times Online reports:
Those who do hear what he has to say will be encouraged to aim almost as high as he has. Michael Jordan, the basketball star, “was cut from his high school team,” Mr Obama said, and “J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times”.
The full transcript of the speech can be found here.
You may recall that the Sasha and Malia Obama are also big fans of Harry Potter and had the chance to visit the set this past summer.

Harry Melling--the actor who plays Dudley Dursley--discussed his recent weight loss and his career in an interview with the Telegraph.
On returning to the set of Deathly Hallows after his weight loss, Melling no longer looked like Dudley.
Dudley doesn't feature in the sixth Potter film, so there was a long gap between playing the butterball bully in the fifth, aged 16, and shooting the seventh film, this year. In the meantime, he had changed almost beyond recognition, to the producers' alarm. "They did this double-take, 'Oh my God, we are going to have to do something,' and I felt very guilty. They could have recast, but instead they padded me out."
Despite not being a lead in the movies, Melling is happy with his career.
"I can now shed the child-actor thing, like the fat, and start a new career, because no one sees me as Dudley."

In September we told you about a very cool remote control wand that was about to go on sale.
Since then, the creator of the wand offered to give Jamie a demonstration of the Kymera Magic Wand in the comfort of Jamie's own home using his own electronic equipment.
Jamie was blown away by the technology and wrote up a review for MuggleNet (the full review can be accessed by clicking the "Read More..." link at the bottom of this post): It was roughly two minutes into my interview with Chris Barnardo, mastermind of the Kymera magic wand, that we got onto the topic of Arthur C. Clarke’s third law: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Chris quoted it with such passion that I knew I was about to see some sorcery in action, and before I know it, I’m turning lights off with the flick of a wand and turning up the volume on my iPod dock with a majestic twizzle.
The Kymera magic wand is truly a puzzle piece of engineering. About halfway into the interview Chris laments that 300 years ago he’d have been burnt at the stake. If I’m being honest, I’m surprised he escapes that punishment today. I simply have no idea how the wand works (although he does explain it to me), but am infinitely impressed with it. The technology is clever. The wand is heavy-ish but not cumbersome, and fits comfortably in the palm. The styling is rustic, Victorian and sleek, but not overpowering. One gets the sense that this wasn’t made simply for aesthetics.

Wouldn't it be cool for your school's houses to be named after the four Hogwarts houses? At Oxford University, students are currently on their way to making that happen.
For the first time in 550 years, the Magdalen College Junior Common Room at Oxford has been changed to the Gryffindor common room. From The Telegraph:
Students are now campaigning to rename Christ Church, St Hughs and Merton colleges common rooms after the three other houses in Hogwarts; Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.
"Magdalen College embodies the values of courage, daring, nerve and chivalry," third-year student Zoe Tyndall, 21, who proposed the name change.
"These are the characteristics of the Gryffindor house in Harry Potter novels."
The motion was passed with only six students opposing the name change.
Tom Meakin, President-Elect of Magdalen Junior Common Room added: "Magdalen does after all look a little bit like Hogwarts, and not to put any noses out of joint, but my Vice-President does look a little bit like Hagrid."

An interesting new article has come out regarding the retirement of two of the Potter series most famous creatures, Hedwig and Errol. The owls have been moved to a sanctuary in Northeast UK near PeterHead, where they will join other birds and various cats and dogs. While there, they will befriend local children with learning disabilities including children with Autism and ADHD. They may also tour schools and attend other summer events around the UK.
If you would like to see Hedwig and Errol, you can call and book a visit with the center even though it’s not open to the public yet.

There's a really easy way for you to help better the world. The Harry Potter Alliance is in the running for the Chase Community Giving Challenge's top prize of $250,000.
All they have to do is have the most votes out of all the charities in the competition.
To vote, CLICK HERE, press the green "Vote Now" button, hit "Like" (if you haven't already), and then press Vote Now again. Encourage your friends to vote too!
It's a ridiculously simple way to help a great cause. Thanks for the support! For the record, here's how The Harry Potter Alliance plans to use the money:
With $250,0000 we can improve Literacy, LGBT Rights, AND build an Online Coalition of Fandoms, Youtube Communities, and Organizations. No one has ever before brought communities like these together and the one time we have, we raised over $123,000 for Haiti. Human rights and fighting global warming continue to lack the kind of energy and enthusiasm that we will bring to the table. Ready to see a game changer in the world of social activism? If we win the $250,000 prepare to see a massive shift!

According to a new article, the most famous train in cinematic history, the 1937 GWR 4900 Class 5972 'Olton Hall' Steam locomotive, also known to fans as the "Hogwarts Express," will be taking its place on display for all to see in the Great Hall of the National Railway Museum.
The Director of Fun for the National Railway Museum (NRM) is 7-year old Harry Potter fan Sam Pointon. Sam was appointed by the NRM last summer to ensure the museum's family-friendly summer activities stay on track.
Of the 'Olton Hall', Sam said, "I really liked seeing 'Olton Hall' in the museum's South Yard last year, but now I want it to be in the Great Hall where more locomotives are and where I can get up close"

Last week, we announced a new weekly post showcasing one of the submitted Fan Art drawings that was recently sent in to our Fan Art Section. Our staff member, Noah Fried, will be posting all of the submitted work in the Fan Art Section and will be picking out one for a post here on the front page.
This week's drawing comes to us from Santa Catarina, Brazil. Thiago Buzzy, 23, attends a design school and is a freelance animator. Inspired by Harry Potter since 2000, he hopes to attend art school in the USA or Europe upon graduation.
Noah's Notes: Seen clearly in the full-scale drawing, Thiago used a combination of 2B and 8B pencils to create a scene from Prisoner of Azkaban in a style very reminiscent to Mary GrandPre. By implementing darks and lights around Buckbeak, it gives him a curved form in his body and limbs. Also, by using a smudged sky background, we are reminded of the tense rescue mission taking place. Great job Thiago.
Submit your drawing for next week based on Goblet of Fire chapters 7-9 in keeping with the current edition of MuggleCast Episode 208. Or, perhaps you would prefer to draw your favorite scene for the upcoming Deathly Hallows Part 1 movie. Please submit your drawing by following the instructions found here. All levels of experience are welcome to contribute, and you may find your drawing here on the front page news.

Earlier this week we showed the first of our weekly Fan Art posts. Today, we kick off our weekly Recipe Submission. Each week, we will feature Harry Potter fans making a recipe that would be eaten at Hogwarts or as a traditional English fare.
Today, I am proud to give you a recipe that my daughter Stephanie and I tried this week. We made Harry's favorite dessert, Treacle Tart. It was actually quite a simple recipe that was easy to follow and turned out to be quite delicious, especially when combined with a good quality Vanilla Ice Cream. The recipe for this dessert can be found in Madam Rosmerta's Recipe Section.
For those of you needing to use a conversion for measuring ingredients: use this link
It was a very sweet dessert thanks to the thick Golden Syrup and Molasses, but when eaten warm with a scoop of ice cream it was absolutely perfect. Now we know why it's Harry's Favorite dessert at Hogwarts.
Please send us your recipes and perhaps they will be featured here on the front page. Just follow the instructions for submission.

A scene that will be sure to frighten most audience members: Hary and Hermione go to visit Godric's Hollow and come across a very elderly witch Bathilda Bagshot. What happens next? Well, take a look at this wonderful drawing.
This week, our picture comes from James Stone, a dedicated fan of the series for eleven years. His submission is titled "Shattered" and was done in watercolor pencils. This drawing comes to us at a perfect time as we anxiously await the release of the Part 1 trailer tomorrow evening.
Noah's Notes: This picture is full of action-and full of colors. Notice how the red from the explosive spell creates a glow that lights up everything from the front of the snake to the flying window shards to Harry's rimmed glasses. At the same time, James brings blue tones forward, illuminating the right side of the page and adding form to Hermione's back and left arm. The style is cartoony. Very reminiscent, in fact, of Dragonball Z...Awesome work James!
As MuggleCast is currently doing Chapter-by-Chapter on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, we ask fans to submit your drawing for next week based on the upcoming discussion of Chapters 10-12 ("Mayhem at the Ministry", "Aboard the Hogwarts Express", and "The Triwizard Tournament"). We appreciate all of your hard work on these drawings you send in, and we remind you to submit your artwork by following the instructions found here.

This week we feature a recipe that Harry has had many times in Hagrid's Hut. But with this recipe, they won't break your teeth. Thank you for your recipe submission Misty.
Rock cakes are a bit cookie-like because, though you do cut the butter into the flour, they use minimal additional liquid. Rock cakes are small, round cakes that have a crunchy, sugar coated exterior and the most wonderful, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture you could ever hope to enjoy. If you over cook them, they will turn out rather burnt and rock like since there is little moisture in the dough. Hence the name "Rock Cakes".
For all of our recipes, please go to the Madam Rosmerta's Recipe section. We also ask for your participation: please send us your recipes or stories and pictures of you attempting current recipes and perhaps they will be featured here on the front page. Just follow the instructions for submission.

This week's Fan Art submission, which can be seen in it's entirety here, comes from a young and talented artist depicting an evil Bellatrix during the final battle at Hogwarts. To see all of our Fan Art submissions: go to our Fan Art Section.
Our picture comes from Clare, age 14, who has been a fan of the Harry Potter series ever since she was introduced to the audiobooks when she was six. The title of her submission is "The Fatal Blow", referring to the scene where Bellatrix murders her cousin Tonks who, most unfortunately, is one of Clare's favorite characters. According to the artist, this piece was done in sharpie, colored pencils, water colors, and was further edited with the program Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X1.
Noah's Notes: Clare intended for the light from the "Avada Kedavra" to both bring out detail and also Bellatrix's psychotic nature, and I think she achieves that here for the witch certainly looks demonic; savage, even. The colors added to the face really support that wild aesthetic. I love the blue towards the bottom, too, which both forms her cloak and adds to the vortex-like quality of the picture as a whole. Truly, this is an excellent representation of Bellatrix at her finest and most evil moment! Ironic, considering at this point in the text her demise is just around the corner: "NOT MY DAUGHTER YOU..."
Send in your Fan Art by following the guidelines for submission found here. See you again next Tuesday!

If you have been to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (WWOHP), you have probably enjoyed the sweet and delicious taste of butterbeer. If you haven't had the chance to go yet, perhaps you can still enjoy a taste of the Wizarding World from your own home with this recipe.
This week's recipe was sent in to us by Ashly, who recently spent her honeymoon at the WWOHP theme park in Orlando, Florida. While visiting the park and sampling the butterbeer, Ashly just had to find out if she could duplicate that wonderful and addicting taste. She described it as a "whipped shortbread cookie". After sampling with several formulas, Ashly may have it here. Try it for yourself and let us know what you think. You can also try some of other recipes in Madam Rosmerta's Recipe Section.
Send us your recipe for next Thursday, and please remember to send us a photo of your results and follow the recipe submission guidelines found here.

Our artist this week is Ehssan Nosrati, a 27-year-old cartoonist and animator from Iran. Ehssan has been a long time fan of both the Harry potter series and MuggleNet. This amazing drawing of Harry shows how J.K. Rowling's magic has touched millions of us around the world.
Noah's Notes: This picture makes excellent use of blue tones. Notice how Ehssan curls blue color around Harry's left coat sleeve, giving it that round shape. Similarly, he brings out the form of the shirt by varying light and dark tones, which seem to dip in points and curve around Harry's frame. There's even a little blue in Harry's hair, which reflects the wispy background. Harry exudes power in this picture, and the green eyes and red scar are very striking, appropriately. Well done, sir!
Send in your Fan Art by following the guidelines for submission found right here. See you again next Tuesday!

This week, Madam Rosmerta's Recipe will be terrific for you to do as a birthday treat at school or for an upcoming party for yourself. Just ask my daughter Leah. Together we made cupcakes with this recipe for her school, but we put our own little Harry Potter flair on it and called it "Padfoot Cupcakes".
By adding a peppermint patty and some Junior Mints on a bed of white vanilla icing (with or without coconut for an added snow effect), we transformed these delicious treats to a dessert that Sirius Black would be proud of.
Do you have a Harry Potter influenced recipe of your own that you'd like to share? Click here and share it with us for next Thursday by following the submission guidelines!

With the holiday's approaching rapidly and Harry Potter fans everywhere trying to scoop up the latest merchandise hitting shelves from the release of the latest blockbuster, the recently released Harry Potter Collector's Handbook may be a fantastic gift to add to your list.
I was asked to do a full review of this collector's guide and I was surprised that it isn't just a book for the ultimate collector of Potter merchandise; a casual collector and fan of the series will enjoy it as well. This is truly a fantastic book for every fan to own.
Additionally, we are announcing a new contest for U.S. residents: create a unique display of your Harry Potter merchandise (clothes, books, memorabilia, posters, etc.), take a photo (maximum of 3 photos per contestant), write a brief description of the photo and send it to keith@staff.mugglenet.com by Wednesday December 15th. The top 5 results for most unique display (not necessarily the largest) will win a signed-copy of the Harry Potter Collector's Handbook. Good luck to all!

We previously announced an opportunity for 5 lucky fans to win a signed-copy of the Harry Potter Collector's Handbook, which was originally scheduled to end December 15th. This contest is open for U.S. residents to submit up to 3 photos of their Potter-related collections and describe what makes their collection unique.
We have received a great number of submissions to this contest and many have expressed their thanks for the opportunity to gather all of their collectibles in one area and share their story.
However, due to the large number of requests from college students who would not have the opportunity to enter their Harry Potter collections until they arrived home for the holidays: we are extending this contest until Sunday December 19th at 11:59pm EST. So get those collection photos together and send them to keith@staff.mugglenet.com as soon as possible.

Prior to reading this title, have you ever heard of a D-Box Theater? There are only 48 D-Box cinemas in the world, but if you're near one, we recommend you watch Deathly Hallows - Part 1 in the theater again; it will be an experience you won't want to miss!
Luckily, MuggleNet reader Hilary went to one recently and she was kind enough to send us her full review, which you can read right here. Fly through the air with Snape, swim to get the locket horcrux, and slither like Nagini. This will seem like a 2 1/2 hour ride on Forbidden Journey...can you handle that?
Thank you Hilary for your review! Check out her Tumblr blog here.

We received nearly 100 entries of your personal Harry Potter collections and every entry was certainly unique and amazing in its own way.
It was obvious that each entrant took a lot of time in setting up their individual displays and it made our choice of the Top 5 very difficult. After careful review of each entry, we would like to congratulate:
Billy L., Jordan B., Abby S., Roxanne P., and Jonathan L.
Each of you will be receiving a signed-copy of the Harry Potter Collector's Handbook. We recommend all Potter fans to pick up your very own copy this holiday season. To view the Top 12 entries, go here.
Thank you to all who submitted photos of your personal Harry Potter collections!

Whether you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or a holiday event, we are sent stories all the time of Harry Potter themed gatherings. Muggles dressing up in wizard robes, food being made to recreate a Hogwarts feast, and games to reenact scenes from the Potter series.
Today, we received a story from young MuggleNet fans Hannah and Ben Appleman, whose family recently held their Purim party filled with Harry Potter themes. Ben and Hannah created a poem to discover Potter items in cauldrons for the guests of the Purim party. Purim is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from destruction in the wake of a plot by Haman.
When is your next Potter themed event taking place? Let us know in the comment section below.

On November 12-13, 2011 the Quidditch World Cup will take center stage on Randall's Island in New York City. 100 teams and over 2,000 athletes from all over the country will compete for the coveted Quidditch World Cup title sponsored by the International Quidditch Association.
Based on the wizarding sport created in J.K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter' series, Quidditch is played with 3 chasers, 2 beaters, 1 keeper, and 1 seeker on brooms and the Golden Snitch doing its best to stay hidden during the game. This game is extremely fast paced and hard-hitting and only the best conditioned athletes can survive the grueling tournament.
Last year, Middlebury College, the birthplace of muggle Quidditch, took home the top prize and this year's competition will be even more fierce as they try to repeat as champions. You can purchase tickets for the event now and sign up to volunteer via the IQA website here.
MuggleNet will be covering the event over the weekend and we hope to see you there.

The Quidditch World Cup is coming to Randall's Island in New York this November, and now you can watch the live action with your own pair of Omnioculars.
Sony has developed a new set of video binoculars called Vinoculars, which are capable of recording live action in either 2D or 3D modes while recording the sound in stereo. Just as Harry and Ron watched the Quidditch World Cup through their pair of Omnioculars, you will be able to stop the live action, replay recorded action or just view the action live magnified up to 20X.
The Vinoculars will not be cheap though, as the current price is 1800 GBP (approximately $2800. USD).
J.K. Rowling was truly a remarkable forward thinking writer when she designed Omnioculars in the wizarding world.

As we mentioned previously, Freddie Stroma - the actor who portrayed Cormac McLaggen in the Harry Potter series - will be appearing in the upcoming movie A Cinderella Story: Once Upon A Song, which is a modern musical twist to the classic story.
During his promotional interviews, Freddie discusses being a part of the Potter series, including how nice it is to see the trio moving on so well. When asked how he felt now that the franchise is over, Freddie said:
"It was definitely very sad leaving but at the same time it was nice to see how the actors go on and do different things. It's nice to see people moving on as well and being allowed to show off their talents as well. I was sad when I watched the final one. I was like, 'Oh, so it's over. It's an end of an era.' I can't think of any other scenario where you have such a big franchise. I mean, you've got eight films that have been going for over a decade. It's just so strange to see it end, I guess."
The DVD for A Cinderella Story: Once Upon A Time will be released September 6th.
You can also see Freddie alongside 'Potter' star Bonnie Wright in the upcoming 2012 film The Philosophers.

In its most recent issue, Newsweek has published a new article comparing former Apple CEO Steve Jobs to Harry Potter. Jobs stepped down from Apple last week.
"Steve Jobs is a wizard among muggles, says his one-time biographer and object of ire Alan Deutschman.
'Like the fictional Harry Potter, he was a misfit, raised by adoptive parents, who ultimately discovered that he was a wizard among muggles,' writes Deutschman in Newsweek."
He also makes the same claim of mugglehood in Steve's desire to 'be at an elite school and obtain its validation that he was indeed a wizard rather than a muggle.'"
Do you agree with their comparison to the boy wizard?

Nick Jonas, the youngest and arguably the most talented of the Jonas Brothers, will be taking over the role of J. Pierrepont Finch currently being played by Daniel Radcliffe in the Broadway musical sensation, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
As we previously announced, Dan will complete his run of the show at the end of the year and Darren Criss, Harry Potter himself from The Harry Potter Musical and Sequel fame, will be beginning his performances on January 3 and go through January 23, 2012.
Upon Darren's completion, Nick Jonas will take the leading role over on January 24th and go until July 1st, 2012. Ironically, Nick is also trying to get cast alongside Darren Criss in 'Glee'.
Nick is not new to the Broadway stage as he has performed in several plays including: Annie Get Your Gun in 2001, Beauty and the Beast in 2002, and Les Miserables in 2003. According to a recent article:
"This is going to be an exciting journey. It's great to come back to Broadway. I always said my return to Broadway would have to feel right - the right role at the right time. This felt right."
Good luck Nick, you are going to have to fill some big shoes from Dan and Darren.

Natalia Tena, who portrayed Nymphadora Tonks in the Harry Potter series, said that she didn't feel sad about the 'Potter' fantasy series coming to an end.
As Natalia was promoting her latest film, You Instead, she reflected that she wasn't emotionally attached to the series the same way as Dan, Rupert, and Emma were. She stated:
"I was always just in and out. Some people were there for three years, and because my character is very small in the films I did little pockets of it."
Natalia Tena will also be starring alongside 'Potter' actor Matt Lewis (Neville) soon in Wasteland.

Today, we join with the rest of the country and many around the world, pausing to reflect upon those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
Many of you, like MuggleNet, were still very young. But these events have come to shape all of our lives and the world in which we live today.
Here is what some of our staff remembers about that Tuesday morning:
Kat: I walked out of my art history class to find a group of students huddled around a television that had been setup in the hallway. I walked over and asked a girl I was friendly with what was going on. She didn't say a word, but just pointed at the image of the first tower on fire. She said a plane hit it about ten minutes ago. We put our arms around each others shoulders and prayed for NYC.
Noah: We all went home early from elementary school that day, and I was surprised and happy to see my dad there already. He had to take a train in from New York City.
Emerson: I was in my bed, sleeping, when Dylan woke me up: "New York is under attack." What a scary way to wake up. I ran downstairs just in time to see the second tower struck.
Keith: I was home form work that Tuesday morning and turned on the television at about 8:50 am to see the World Trade Center on fire. I thought I was watching a movie until I looked and saw and it was on CNN from the night before. I was mesmerized by what I was watching. Then the second plane hit, and immediately I knew what was happening and instinct from the military told me we were under attack and headed for war.
Share your story and join us in remembering the heroes and loved ones who lost their lives that day.
Our thoughts and prayers are with their families as we continue to never forget.

If you have already been sorted into the Ravenclaw house on J.K. Rowling's new interactive website Pottermore, which there are now currently over 94,000 members in Ravenclaw, then show your Eagle pride by adding the hashtag #ravenclawpride throughout the day whenever you send a tweet on Twitter.
Tomorrow will be the final day of Pottermore pride when Gryffindors will have their chance to show their pride.

This Friday, September 23rd, the Swampscott High School in Swampscott, Massachusetts, will be hosting a Quidditch Tournament to raise money for a charity called 'Project Bread.' This tournament is being conducted by members of the SHS Harry Potter Alliance: PotterWatch at the Lower Jackson Field from 2:30 - 4:30pm.
What is Project Bread? It is an organization dedicated to "alleviating, preventing, and ultimately ending hunger in Massachusetts." In this economy, there are many people living paycheck to paycheck or under the poverty line; therefore, events like this that use the power of 'Harry Potter' and the Harry Potter Alliance are excellent to hear about.
How can you use the power of 'Harry Potter' themes in your community?

The black german shepherd who played Sirius Black's animagus form seven years ago in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" has recently found himself in a dog rescue center in England. His owner, stunt man Paul Thompson, left 10-year-old Berry at the center reportedly because he travels too much these days for work to give the dog the attention and love he deserves.
Alongside Berry, his friend the white german sheperd 13-year-old Porridge (who has likewise landed several dramatic roles) was also left at the shelter this Sunday.
"It was a difficult decision to make but one I had to accept was best for the dogs," Thompson told the Sunday Express.
We hope the dogs find a loving family - and soon.

According to a new article from The Daily Mail, a previously unseen sketch of Harry Potter meeting Buckbeak has been discovered after its original creation 10 years ago from UK cover illustrator Cliff Wright.
Cliff Wright designed the covers for both Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban, but then refused to do Goblet of Fire after his original front and back cover artwork for Azkaban was lost by a design studio.
This sketch, seen here, is going to be sold by antique dealers Art of The Imagination at the Antiques for Everyone Fair at the end of the month and could go for a five-figure sum.
Mike Emery, from the Art of the Imagination said:
"This sketch is extremely rare - when Cliff finished his association with the Harry Potter series he stopped doing any drawings...Any Potter fan would love to get their hands on this item and there is a lot of excitement around it already. It would make a fantastic part of any collection."
If you had the means to purchase this piece, would you want to own it?

Back in 2006, we reported that scientists and researchers were laying out a blue print to build an invisibilty cloak that could perform the same basic function as Harry's cloak.
Today, we are closer than ever as researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas shared a video that showcases their concept of nanotechnology, which in this case is the bending of light rays that creates a photothermal deflection to give the impression that the object is invisible.
Should invisibility cloaks stay in the fictional world of Harry Potter or are you ready for a real-world application of the cloak? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Andrew Slack, co-founder of the Harry Potter Alliance, recently gave a brilliant and inspiring speech in front of a coprorate media team from TEDxTransmedia.
In Andrew's speech, he talked about reading Harry Potter for the first time, and after finishing the first chapter, like many of us, was hooked for life. Using the inspirations of the series, Andrew created a muggle version of 'Dumbledore's Army', which to date has given over 90,000 books to third world countries; sent 5 cargo planes filled with medical supplies to Haiti; fought against Global Warming, homophobia, depression, child slavery, and a host of other ongoing issues in today's world.
Andrew leads the way in explaining why thousands of the fans of Harry Potter today have been able to band together and standup against the issues facing our world.

Although Halloween has just ended, and Christmas is well over a month away, the Christmas shopping season was officially opened in Watford, UK.
The lighting of the Harlequin Shopping Centre's Christmas decorations were given some extra magic as James and Oliver Phelps - who portrayed Fred and George Weasley in the 'Potter' films - turned on the illuminations for the season.
Although it may seem a bit odd to turn on the Christmas lights so early in the season, the General Manager of Harlequin told the Watford Observer that, "For 20 years we have turned the lights on on the first Thursday in November and it's become a tradition."
James and Oliver have spent quite a bit of time in Watford, which is just outside the home of Harry Potter at Leavesden Studios. James noted:
"When we were filming we were based in St. Albans or at the Grove hotel down the road so we have a lot of good friends in Kings Langley and Watford."

As we mentioned previously, Dan Radcliffe will end his performances as J. Pierrepont Finch in the hugely successful Broadway show How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at the end of the year.
However, "the show must go on," and replacing Dan on January 3rd, 2012, will be another Harry Potter fan favorite, Darren Criss - who played Harry Potter himself in the wildly popular fan made musical A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel.
Darren will be playing the lead role for three weeks only as Nick Jonas will then take over the role on January 24th. So if you are a Darren Criss fan, get your tickets now for this amazing play and watch Darren's debut on Broadway.

Students in the Honors Program at Illinois State University held a Potter-themed charity event called 'A Very Potter Party'. This gathering included food, such as Cauldron Cakes and Licorice Wands; fund-raising games, such as the Dementor Kissing Booth and Azkaban Prison; costume contests, and more all to celebrate the students' love for Harry Potter as well as to raise money for JK Rowling's charity, Lumos.
The Lumos charity helps under-privledged children in Eastern Europe, which the students at ISU felt compelled to donate to.
"This party was a great way for honors students to connect over their love of such a great literary and film series," Biggs said.

Be sure to catch THE SCORPIO RACES, the book that Seventeen.com called, "A wonderful combination of 'Harry Potter' and 'The Hunger Games' that you won't ever want to end."
Written by bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater of SHIVER and FOREVER, THE SCORPIO RACES tells the magical adventure of the most dangerous race in the world where both love and life meet their greatest obstacles, and only the strong of heart can survive.
Entertainment Weekly raves: "In the impossibly thrilling...beautifully executed drama, Stiefvater has established herself as one of the finest YA novelists writing today."
And The New York Times Book Review declares: "Stiefvater, most recognized for her Shiver werewolf romances, not only steps out of the young adult fantasy box with The Scorpio Races but crashes it with pounding hooves...if The Scorpio Races sounds like nothing you've ever read, that's because it is...[Stiefvater has] written a complex literary thriller that pumps new blood into a genre suffering from post-Twilight burnout."
Don't miss this must-read for Muggles everywhere! Make sure to watch the super cool trailer that Maggie created the art and music for by clicking here!

Potted Potter: The Unauthorized Harry Experience - A Parody by Dan and Jeff is a two-man play that takes on the ultimate challenge of condensing or "potting" all seven Harry Potter novels into seventy madcap minutes. Written and performed by Olivier Award-nominated actors Daniel Clarkson and Jefferson Turner, aided by multiple costume changes, brilliant songs, ridiculous props and a generous helping of Hogwarts magic. The show also invites audiences to engage in Dan and Jeff's own special version of a game of Quidditch.
This Monty-Python-esque show sold out theaters across the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, and will now make its North American debut on Valentine's Day. It will have a limited two-week run beginning on February 11-16, 2012 at the Panasonic Theatre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Whether you've camped outside for three days awaiting the release of the Deathly Hallows or you don't know the difference between a Horcrux and a HufflePuff, the comedy, magic and mayhem of 'Potted Potter' makes for an entertaining and hilarious visit to the theatre.
This criticalluy acclaimed show, which has made audiences aged six to Dumbledore (who is very old indeed) roar with laughter all over the world, is suitable for the whole family, including grown-ups, Muggles, and Squibs.

In a new annual studio report card by 'Reuters', Warner Brothers Studios received a 'B' for the year despite having the largest box office hit of the year with the finale Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, and the most commercially successful R-rated comedy of all-time in The Hangover Part II. Warner Brothers fell to the number 2 studio behind Paramount Pictures for the year.
WB will fall short of the $1.88 billion it brought in domestically last year, even if the soon-to-be-released Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows manages to match the domestic income of the original film. The reason behind the lowered grade by Reuters comes in part to the failure to turn The Green Lantern into a much-needed new multi-hit franchise among other disappointing overall sales like Happy Feet, which is in theaters now, but has only brought in $106 million and cost the company $100 million to produce.
This downturn, in part, is due to the overall attendence being down by 5 percent, and revenue has shrunk by approximately 4 percent. However, 2011 overall is being slated as one of the weakest years that Hollywood has offered to moviegoers worldwide.
In 2010, Warner Brothers released 27 films including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, Clash of the Titans, and Valentine's Day and brought in an industry leading $4.81 billion globally compared to the 26 films released in 2011 and slightly lower overall sales.
With all of these numbers, it still holds that the number one movie of the year, Deathly Hallows - Part 2, grossed $1.33 billion worldwide and is ranked #3 in revenue sales All-Time Worldwide behind only Avatar and Titanic.
Besides Deathly Hallows - Part 2, what was your favorite movie of the year? Let us know in the comments below.

As we previously mentioned, the UK Outlet, Sainsbury Entertainment, and Warner Brothers held a special contest to celebrate the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 Blu-ray/DVD in the UK, by awarding a grand prize that included Rupert Grint making an appearence at the winner's school.
Today, the BBC has reported that the winner, a student named Sarah Cotter from Bishop Walsh Catholic School and the students in Sutton Coldfield, UK were surprised to see that Rupert also brought a surprise guest, Oliver Phelps. As a part of the prize, the two cast memebers signed gift sets of the final film for each student, as well as participating in a panel chat.
See photos from the school event here:
- Rupert Grint autographing Blu-ray/DVD sets
- Students with the actors
- Audience panel conversation
- Students pose with Rupert and Oliver
Rupert also informed the students that he rarely watches the DVD, as he finds it strange to see himself "so small", as he refers to himself in the early Potter films.

Another video, this one from HmV, has been released from the promotional tour that several cast members held during the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 Blu-ray/DVD launch in the UK earlier this month.
Discussing a variety of subjects relating to the film series and sets was Warwick Davis, Mark Williams, James and Oliver Phelps, and Jessie Cave. Each of them shared what they have 'borrowed' from the sets at Leavesden:
James Phelps - "We 'borrowed'...if they wanted it back for any reason they could ask us and we'd happily oblige. But I do happen to have a Weasley Wizarding Wheezes Skiving Snackbox, complete with all the kit inside."
Jessie Cave - "I actually do have something of Lavender's. I accidentally wore home a stud [earring]."
Oliver Phelps - "I actually 'accidentally' have a bag from the Weasley's joke shop. I found it. It was easier for you to take something, er 'borrow' something that was going to not be missed as easy."
Warwick Davis - "...I have a Gringott's galleon from the first film, and that's when they were properly minted coins. But it's legit because it was given to my daughter, Annabelle, by one of the producers."
Mark Williams - "I've got one. I wore Arthur's shoes to something, and there were two sets of shoes. Jany [Temime] said, 'It's okay. you keep them.'"
Mark Williams also commented on how they had filled Leavsden Studios with all of the sets, filled the Pinewood Studios, and had sets in Shepperton for the final film, which is a massive amount of production for one film.

In her first year on Broadway, Rose Hemmingway discusses a few of her personal memories spent with her fellow star, Dan Radcliffe, from the hit musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and also how she looks forward to being alongside Darren Criss and Nick Jonas next.
Rose Hemmingway, who portrayed the sweet secretary Rosemary Pilkington in the show How to Succeed, said 2011 was a year full of incredible memories for her. She and Dan became friends along with Rose's husband of one year, Geoffrey, and they began to hang out. One day, she and husband Geoff took Dan to their favorite soul food place and watched as the line cooks almost fainted at the sight of Harry Potter himself eating their Mac and Cheese. Then Dan returned the favor by taking Rose and Geoff as his guest to the Premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 in New York City. Rose said of Dan, "He's so down to earth, sometimes you actually forget he's Harry Potter!"
The subject of kissing Dan Radcliffe often comes up in conversation about the show, to which she will reply with the answer her husband came up with, "It's magical."
As we reported previously, Darren Criss began his 3-week tour as the lead role J.Pierrepont Finch alongside Rose, which will then be followed by Nick Jonas on January 24th.

On Tuesday night, Darren Criss performed the lead role as J. Pierrepont Finch for the Broadway musical hit How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
Darren has come such a long way in the past year. Originally known throughout the fandom as Harry Potter himself with the online musical sensation A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel. Darren was then cast on the hit show 'Glee' as the Potter fandom helped propel his career to stardom.
Now, he makes his Broadway debut on a cold night in New York City. One of the fans attending the event sent in her personal perspective of the day; from acquiring tickets, watching the show, and getting an autograph from Darren after the show.
MuggleNet fan Jessica Klein, from the New York City Harry Potter meetup group, The Group That Shall Not Be Named (TGTSNBN), and chaser/seeker for the NY Badassilisks muggle quidditch team, shares her story, which can be read in full right here.
Thanks Jessica for the great story!

We reported last week about Round 1 of the MTV Movie Brawl featuring two of the Harry Potter stars new films seeded in the tournament. Now, you can go cast your vote for the second round of competition.
In the first round, Emma Watson's new film - the soon-to-be-released Perks of Being a Wallflower - was facing off against certainly one of the premier films of 2012 in The Hobbit. The Hobbit won that round, but it was a very close match with The Hobbit receiving 51.71% of the votes to move on to Round 2.
However, Dan Radcliffe's new film The Woman in Black - which is set to be released February 10th - was victorious in its matchup against the No. 2 seed Snow White and the Huntsman.
Therefore, the second round match in this division is all set and you can now cast your vote: The Hobbit vs. The Woman in Black. This match will go down to the wire. So go cast your vote right here.
Don't forget that MuggleNet will be attending the World Premiere of The Woman in Black in London on January 24th.

Clemence Poesy, the actress and model that portrayed the Beauxbaton beauty Fleur Delacour, is appearing inside the fashion magazine Glamour. Although Clemence is a front-row regular at Fashion Week, she will be the first to say that she is not an "it" girl when it comes to everyday fashion attire.
Clemence appeared in three of the eight Harry Potter films and is currently starring in the BBC adaptation of Sebastian Faulk's best-selling novel, Birdsong.
You can see the full magazine shoot from Glamour right here:

Firewhiskey, a strong sensational drink enjoyed in good times and in bad in the wizarding world. Witches and wizards must be of age in order to celebrate with it at Hog's Head. Many toasts throughout the series from weddings to memorials included firewhiskey. A moment that stands out amongst the rest includes when everyone but Alastor arrived to the Burrow after leaving Privet Drive. The remaining Order members toasted in Moody's honor.
Some say the burning sensation experienced to follow a swig of Firewhiskey is an amplified amount of courage filling one's body. Whether this is just a tale or not can not be proven; however, we can prove that a non-alcoholic version of firewhiskey is one tasty treat.
Madam Rosmerta is happy to add a version of Firewhiskey to her growing recipe box. Do you have your own Potter recipe? If you have made plans to go to Harry Potter: The Exhibition in Sydney, Australia, and were looking forward to seeing the sidecar that Harry rode in during the "Seven Potters" scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, you won't catch a glimpse of it down under.
That's because the Watsonian Squire sidecar has made its way to Court Barn Museum in Chipping Campden, a small market town within the Cotswold district of Goucestershire, England. In fact, the sidecar was made in the nearby town of Blockley.
The sidecar will remain on display at the museum until March 11th.

In a new interview, James Watkins, the executive director of the soon-to-be-released film The Woman in Black starring Daniel Radcliffe and another 'Potter' alumni Ciaran Hinds, who portrayed Aberforth Dumbledore in the finale, talks about the making of the film and casting Dan as the lead role.
When asked: Did you worry at all about casting Daniel Radcliffe as your lead? Were you worried that audiences would have a specific expectation of what the film would be, without having seen it?
"Yeah, of course. Dan is part of this rich legacy and he has those associations. He has good baggage and bad baggage. Some people can't necessarily see beyond that. But Dan is not Harry Potter. He is associated with the iconic role of Harry Potter. But let's look at Dan afresh. He doesn't look anything like Harry Potter, and he doesn't act like Harry Potter. He's playing a different role. Sure, there will be some people who I'm sure won't be able to get over that, but honestly there is nothing you can do about people like that. What is really reassuring is that people see it in good faith and they are hugely impressed by Dan and his performance. I think he did a wonderful job. You can spend your life second-guessing these kinds of things, but when I told Dan about the role, where I wanted to take it, what I wanted him to do, the challenges, and how hard it was going to be, he was absolutely up for it. I thnk we kept that promise.
The Woman in Black will have its World Premiere on January 24th in London, and a Premiere in Toronto on January 26th. The film will be released in theaters on February 10th. Click here to learn how you can win tickets to see the film at the Premiere in London.

Our next fan art submission of the week comes to us from Crystal, who has sent us a photo of her 'Mandrake Baby,' Jade. Crystal made the costume and all the potion bottles (and we were also made to understand that no children were harmed in the "making of this memory"). You can check out the full size image of Crystal's 'Madrake Baby' right here.
Noah's Notes: That is one unhappy baby - but a wonderful representation of a mandrake! I bet a lot of work went into making those potions and creating the individual labels for each bottle...I'm not sure how Jade will react to this picture when she grows up, but she'll certainly have to respect her mother's eye for detail.
The MuggleNet Fan Art Section has recently undergone a heavy upgrade! Besides being able to submit your paintings, drawings, and Potter-themed crafts to the site, you can now send in poetry, and original music you've written inspired by your favorite book series.
Head on over to the MuggleNet Fan Art Section to check out the section's new look!

Darren Criss finished his three-week Broadway run in the musical sensation How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying with some impressive attendance draws.
In the three-week run as the lead of J. Pierrepont Finch, Darren Criss had a box office draw bringing in an impressive $4 million gross. In fact, aside from Daniel Radcliffe's final week of the show with nine performances that grossed $1.3 million, Darren's revival had the most lucrative three-week run.
Replacing Darren as the lead role for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying will be Nick Jonas of The Jonas Brothers fame.
Congratulations to Darren on a fantastic Broadway debut, I'm sure we will see him again in the future on the Broadway stage.

Today we give you a lighthearted look at what a real Harry Potter fan would NEVER say.
Would you say your favorite scene in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the Weasley's house burning? What about Evanna Lynch not really capturing the true spirit of Luna from the books? Nope, neither would we!
Thanks to Christinemay Riccio of CMRProductions for sending the video in.

Encore's World of Film & TV discuss the nominees for Art Direction as the 84th Academy Awards approach. This year the biggest night in Hollywood is also Potter's last chance to rightfully claim an Oscar.
Staurt Craig and Stephenie McMillan together brought our beloved world to life throughout the eight films. The magic which was captured by these visionaries goes without saying. But will the Academy agree?
According to Encore's World of Film & TV, Potter receiving proper recognition could go either way:
"The scenes outside of the magical realm have as much attention to detail as those in the Hogwarts' castle, and after working on eight of these perhaps voters might want to give the series a goodbye wave? It's unlikely considering the st
