Daniel Radcliffe’s tendency to prank his fellow Harry Potter cast-mates often added levity to the set, but there was at least one time when his antics went a little too far.
Reportedly, Robbie Coltrane, who portrayed Hagrid in the films, was once a victim of a prank where the young actor changed the settings on his friend’s phone from English to Turkish. The joke seems harmless enough—except that Coltrane was left unable to make calls!
The infuriated actor had a hard time finding anyone on set who could change the settings of his phone back to English, and Radcliffe was left feeling understandably sheepish about what he had done. Coltrane remembers the event clearly:
Eventually we found a girl in the Harry Potter make-up department who was Turkish Cypriot. She phoned her mum and was chatting away in great detail until they sorted it out. I think Daniel was so upset at what had happened that he wrote me that note...'Dear Mr. Coltrane, I'm sorry I changed your mobile telephone into Turkish...
Have you ever been part of a prank gone too far? Let us know in the comments!

Although he may be smaller in stature than his Harry Potter persona, Rubeus Hagrid, Robbie Coltrane is by no means short on personality. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Coltrane spoke quite candidly regarding his feelings towards his secondary school experience, his journey leading up to realizing he wanted to be an actor, and the complete image overhaul he underwent during and post-Potter. He also chatted about his recent project playing Mr Jaggers in a film adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel Great Expectations, which is under the direction of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire director Mike Newell.
While reminiscing upon his days at secondary school, Coltrane makes it very clear that he was not to be messed with, saying “I didn’t accept the hierarchy, basically” and “It’s essentially survival of the fittest and I was one of the fittest, so I have no complaints." He later addressed how he finds his new exemplar position to his younger Potter fans, saying “Kids come up to you and they go: ‘Would you like to sign my book?’ with those big doe-eyes. And it’s a serious responsibility.”
This film version of Great Expectations was adapted by David Nicholls and features several other Potter actors: Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange), Jessie Cave (Lavender Brown), Ralph Ineson (Amycus Carrow), and Helena Barlow (Rose Weasley). Though this film was not quite on the same budget scale as Potter, Coltrane says that the cast really bonded, adding “it was a good company feel.” The full interview can be seen right here.
Great Expectations will be released in Ireland on November 30th, 2012.
NOTE: Although this is a very enlightening and rather humorous interview, please be aware that there is some profanity that may not be appropriate for younger readers.

They quite literally give a hand, as Potter author JK Rowling and Hagrid actor Robbie Coltrane are among many celebrities contributing to the 'Give Tilly A Hand' charity auction.
Said auction is to benefit a little girl named Tilly Lockey, who had to have her hands and feet amputated after contracting metengitis.
Each celebrity designed their own handprint. JK Rowling drew several Potter-related items on each of her fingers (see photo), and Robbie Coltrane filled his in with green patterns. See all of the celebrity handprints at this link.
The auction will be held September 5th. To see more details, click here. Thanks to Claire for the tip!

In a new interview with BBC News, actor Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid) discusses the upcoming two-part finale to the Harry Potter movie franchise and what he has been doing to pass the time.
"I'm actually producing these days. I've got three things on the go. I'm trying to knock one of them out before we start filming Potter seven in February. There's going to be downtime between film one and two. You know, they're shooting it in two parts, so there'll be a week or two in the middle."
Additionally, Coltrane sat down with Empire Online in a new video interview where he talks about, amongst other things, the flying motorbike scene in Deathly Hallows.

Last night, the actor who plays Rubeus Hagrid in the Potter films was interviewed on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. The big Potter fan that Ross is, he had to ask lots of questions about Potter.
Coltrane revealed that principal photography has finished on Half-Blood Prince, so now all that's left is editing and CGI. He also spoke about the secrets of being turned into Hagrid, where he mentions that "sadly" they don't need to bulk him up for the role.
We have a high quality video of Coltrane talking all about Potter. View it here on YouTube!
