MuggleCast #61: Royal Tannenbaum
Our Halloween special (only a few hours late) brings some unspooky fun to the latest episode of our weekly Harry Potter podcast. Join Ben, Jamie, Laura, Micah and me for a discussion on ghosts and much more:

- This week we welcome you to the show with our sweet new intro.
- Why is WB so adamant about keeping the movies 2 1/2 hours long?
- Jamie's lack of Halloween enjoyment as a child explains his bitter disposition as an adult.
- How should we take Nearly Headless Nick's advice to Harry at the end of OOTP?
- What's with the Bloody Baron, and why is he so... bloody?
- Was the Grey Lady inspired by the ghost of Lady Jane Grey, who haunts the Tower of London?
- Could Dumbledore have gotten rid of Peeves?
- Does Professor Binns know anything crucial about Voldemort?
- Debate: Halloween is a morally vapid holiday, which encourages delinquency.
- Laura Mallory update.

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need an iPod to download or subscribe to the show. You can always update your feed in iTunes, or visit our website and click on "Episodes" for direct download links and more. On that page you will also find a low-bandwidth version of the show for those of you with dial-up connections. Enjoy!

Third title for Book 7
JK Rowling updated her site today with news that she now has a third title for Book 7. Jo also discusses her progress with the seventh book in the past week.

I've now got a third title. I've been thinking back, and I know that I've had more titles than this for a couple of the previous books, so I'm not too worried by this. Title three currently ahead by a short nose, or perhaps that should be a vowel and two consonants.

I've just had a great writing week. There are few feelings more joyous than reading back over the week's work and thinking 'that's not bad at all', as opposed to the all-too-frequent, 'it's rubbish, I've wasted a week and I'll have to re-write the lot.' And if you think that's an exaggeration or false modesty, you are very, very wrong. It's perfectly possible to put in eight hour days and have nothing to show for them but a single idea that, if reworked completely, might be passable.

UPDATE: We missed this one earlier. The Extras section has also been updated with a page explaining spells, charms, hexes, jinxes, and curses.

Yates estimates OOTP running time
Empire magazine's latest edition included a three-page spread on the Order of the Phoenix movie, where director David Yates spoke about the length of the film. "The book's huge, but it actually distills quite easily. That said, I've shot a movie that's probably over three hours, so I'll have to lose 45 minutes in the edit."

Also, Imelda Staunton (Umbridge) has been trying for some time to get involved in the franchise and joked: "Well, actually I was rather insulted they'd never asked."

Finally, producer David Heyman praised Evanna Lynch as Luna: "She's an obsessive Potter fan who'd actually had correspondence with Jo Rowling. When she was cast Jo rang me up because she just couldn't believe it - from her letters she said, 'She is Luna.'"

You can view scans of this spread here, thanks to reader Elle!

JKR discusses Harry's birthday
As a special birthday treat for JK Rowling, South American fan site HPLA gathered money from hundreds of Latin American fans in order to send Jo a bunch of roses and teddy bears. JK later responded in a letter, thanking them for the gifts, as well as shedding light on her motives for giving Harry a July 31st birthday.

When I chose to give Harry my own birthday, I did it with a wry smile to myself. I had no idea, at that time, that I would ever be published, so it was a very private act! But I had always felt slightly cheated that nobody really famous shared my birthday, so I gave myself this (wizard) world world famous boy as a kind of birthday brother. The wonderful side-effect, all these years later, is letters like yours. I could never have imagined it, and it all seems slightly surreal, still!

A scan of the letter can be viewed here. Thanks to Vale of HPLA for the tip!

Newsweek interviews Dan Radcliffe
The weekly US magazine has two new articles focusing around Dan as an actor and how his life has been affected by the Potter films:

You've been playing Harry for six years now. Are you still enjoying it?
This film has been the most fun I've had, definitely, partly because of Imelda Staunton [who plays Harry's nemesis, Professor Dolores Umbridge], and partly because of David Yates, our wonderful director, who I have had absolutely the time of my life working with. He pushes me farther and more often than I ever have been before. This is not being detrimental to any of the previous directors because I wouldn't have been able to do this before, but David has caught me at just the right moment.

You can read the entire Q&A with Dan on Newsweek's website, which is noted as a "Web Exclusive." This most likely means that the interview will not be in the October 30th issue. This separate article about Dan, however, will be printed. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

London Tube station closed for OOTP filming
Today, London's Westminster Underground station was temporarily closed to allow for Order of the Phoenix filming. An article by Yahoo! notes that the scene being filmed was probably where Mr. Weasley escorts Harry to the disciplinary hearing at the Ministry.

A London transport spokeswoman commented: "Planned closures are timed to cause minimum disruption to passengers and commercial requests such as this are subject to an agreed fee. There has been advanced publicity in the area to warn passengers of any potential disruption to their journey."

UPDATE: Photos from today's filming, which included shooting of the scene where Harry and Arthur enter the Ministry phone booth, have just Apparated online. Thanks to LTT via UHP!

Scientists create real invisibility cloak
Using technology designed to make solid objects vanish from sight, a team of US and British scientists have built the world's first cloaking device. It works like a mirage, where heat causes the bending of light rays and cloaks the road ahead behind an image of the sky.

However, David Smith, who led the experiments, said: "It's not yet clear that you're going to get the invisibility that everyone thinks about with Harry Potter's cloak or the Star Trek cloaking device."

"The cloak reduces both an object's reflection and its shadow, either of which would enable its detection."

Gilliam unwilling to direct a Potter flick
Terry Gilliam, the acclaimed director Warner Bros. turned down for Sorcerer's Stone, said in a new interview that he has no intention to direct either Movie 6 or 7, debunking previous rumors that he would. "Warner Bros. had their chance the first time around, and they blew it. It's a factory job, that's what it is, and I know the way it's done. I've had too many friends work on those movies. I know the way it works, and that's not the way I work."

Gilliam went on to discuss what his Potter movie would have been like:

"Alfonso Cuaron's [Prisoner of Azkaban] is really good, but the first two I thought were just bad. They missed the whole point of it; they missed the magic of it... Alfonso did something much closer to what I would've done."

JK signs letter of intent for HP theme park
After months of negotiations, JK Rowling has, according to a new report, signed a letter of intent to the Walt Disney Company allowing them to carry out preliminary construction on a theme park with Harry Potter characters. Although a letter of intent isn't legally-binding, it is "a serious intent to carry out certain business activities." The company is hoping for a definitive response from Jo on the situation by next summer.

NOTE: The article lists the Book 7 release date as July 7th, 2007. Again, this is purely speculation and the date has yet to be announced.

New technology to create Grawp in OOTP
A recent breakthrough in film technology, developed by Image Metrics, allows a computer to map an actor's performance onto any character virtual or human, living or dead. The developers say it is far superior to standard hand-drawn computer graphics which are very costly and time-consuming.

The chairman of Image Metrics commented: "One of our principal tenets is to capture all the movements of the face. You can't put markers on eyes, and you can't replicate the human eye accurately through hand-drawn animation. That's pretty important."

Warner Bros. will use this technology in the depiction of Grawp (played by Tony Maudsley) in Movie 5, which will surely bring Hagrid's giant half-brother to life.

Thanks to those who emailed!

Dan Radcliffe: 'very good kisser'
A new report from the fifth Potter movie set has just surfaced online, and although it isn't very detailed, it does contain some interesting points of information. Here is yet another positive remark on this film's director:

Director David Yates is such a perfectionist that he did so many takes of one scene involving Harry and his "Dumbledore's Army." By the day's end, we could recite all the lines in this scene - and in the voices of the cast.

In addition, the article includes some quotes from Katie Leung: "I feel that I'm very lucky to be chosen out of so many girls." She went on to discuss the kiss with Dan. "Yes, Daniel is a very good kisser. Yeah, I really enjoyed it."

Rupert talks 'Phoenix' filming and more
While in New York City for the premiere of his new film, Driving Lessons, Rupert Grint sat down for a chat with AM New York, where he discussed the movie as well as filming on OOTP. He said they shot the Thestral scenes recently and that "it was really a good time because they had to make a mold, a specially made harness that goes under your legs, because in the film it has to be invisible. They put you on this crane and lifted you up in the air. That's been my favorite scene so far."

Rupert also talked about a scene the producers attempted involving spiders. "They were going to put in a scene where a spider comes down on my leg while I'm hiding under a tree, and they were going to use a real spider. So they were doing tests with different spiders [baby tarantulas], letting them crawl on my leg. They ended up cutting it because I couldn't really deal with it."

OOTP set report in French magazine
In the latest edition of French magazine "Sud Pep's," there is a report on the Order of the Phoenix movie set which features interesting blurbs on the sets and various scenes being shot.

One crew member explained that because the props have to be used over and over, only very durable ones are purchased; as such, nothing is ever thrown away. Also, like the last name of the owner, the interior of Grimmauld Place is described as completely black.

Finally, the article details a poignant scene in which Harry is sitting alone and crying with the wind in his face, presumably shortly after Sirius' demise. In relation to this scene, a reliable source has informed us that Dan listened to depressing music for several days to prepare himself emotionally for this and for a number of other scenes. RAB revealed?
Following the release of the sixth Harry Potter book, rumors have been abuzz concerning the identity of RAB, the mysterious character who left a note in the cave in the novel's closing chapters. So far, JK has remained relatively tight-lipped on the subject, although she said Regulus Black, Sirius' brother, was a "fine guess" in the MN/TLC interview last summer. Subsequently, (highlight)-->"Arcturus"<-- was suggested by fans as the late Death Eater's middle name after the name of a certain star.

Now, the Portuguese HP translator, Isabel Nunes, has reportedly confirmed this in an interview with a Portuguese fan site. Apparently, before Book 6 hit shelves, she contacted Jo about the character's gender, and was told the full name as well as the gender. Her reason for shedding light on the topic at this point is to "keep awake" the excitement for the seventh book. In the past, Nunes also clarified that Blaise Zabini is a man and Professor Sinistra is a woman.

EDIT: Some readers have written in letting us know that the interview where Nunes said this was conducted last November - you can see it here, page 15. Also, according to commenter Ismara, "A translator doesn't have to sign a contract of confidentiality... Translators can share that type of information as long as it's public. If JKR told her the middle name and the gender, it's public information." Jo hasn't confirmed or denied this - let's hope she doesn't so as to leave room for more conjecture - but take that for what you will!

Dobby axed from 'Phoenix' movie
Toby Jones, the man who voiced Dobby in the the second Potter flick, recently told MTV that the ex-house-elf won't be making an appearance in Film 5, although Kreacher will.

"I know that the filmmakers have a problem with each new film because the books are getting longer - there's so much to include in them," Jones remarked.

While Dobby's absence will not shock fans who have been following the films closely, it does open up some plot questions. In the book, it is Dobby who both divulges to Harry the secret of the Room of Requirement (where Harry and the other members of "Dumbledore's Army" meet to practice forbidden defensive spells), and materializes to warn Harry that his secret hideout is no longer safe from the prowling eyes of the increasingly powerful Ministry of Magic informant (and new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher), Dolores Umbridge. With Dobby's absence, it is unclear how these matters will be handled in the film.

I wouldn't worry - the producers have always found other, plausible ways to fill in gaps after cutting scenes or characters. Thanks to everyone who emailed!

Mother appeals decision on Potter ban in libraries
We reported previously on the Georgian mother, Laura Mallory, who campaigned for the Harry Potter books to be removed from Gwinnett County school libraries because, fundamentally, they "promote and glorify witchcraft." Following a public hearing to discuss the matter in April - in which the support for the novels staying put was predictably strong - the Gwinnett Board of Education ruled the books would remain on shelves.

Mallory, unsatisfied with the outcome, appealed the decision and a second hearing was held yesterday. Mallory rehashed her previous points regarding why the books should go, saying "Witchcraft is being mainstreamed to our kids today but people are not aware of it. They think these books are fantasies but Wicca is a real recognized religion."

Gwinnett County Schools attorney Victoria Sweeny says that under Mallory's reasoning, school bookshelves could become virtually empty, as she began to list many other stories with witches as characters, including Macbeth and Sleeping Beauty.

Radcliffe on sources of inspiration
The website for upcoming movie The History Boys includes a piece on Daniel Radcliffe (in the History section) where he discusses how his tutor for the Potter movies inspired him and helped boost his confidence over the past six years.

"Before I started playing Harry Potter I attended a London prep school which was not a happy experience. I left it to play Harry with my confidence at rock bottom and the belief in my ability at absolute zero. However, on HP I was tutored by an astonishing woman called Lina Wright. Over a period of six years she (with the support of City of London School) has built my confidence and given me a love of learning which I am certain will never leave me..."

MuggleCast wins Peoples Choice Award
We're proud to announce that MuggleCast won the top prize at the 2006 Podcast Awards last Friday. The Peoples Choice category was awarded to our Harry Potter podcast after receiving over 100,000 votes from listeners and fans. Thanks to everyone who provided their support through the entire voting process, including our friends at PotterCast who we teamed up with! We'll talk more about the win on episode 58 of MuggleCast.

Now begs the question: Where's MuggleCast #57? It was recorded nearly two weeks ago right before our trip to California. Unfortunately, the show didn't go too smoothly. In fact, the audio decided it didn't want to cooperate either. The combination of the two made for a difficult release, especially since we were busy getting ready for the trip. Now we're busy making up a week's worth of school work, so there's no time to fix it.

So, what are we going to do? MuggleCast #57 is going to stay unreleased for a few weeks until we can fix all of its issues. In the mean time, we'll be recording our 58th show this week, and that will be released this Sunday. To make it up to everyone, we promise that #58 will be a doozy of a show. So much so, you might want to have a spare pair of pants standing by. We'll see everyone this Sunday!

In other news, the live Leaky Mug from California is now available for download! Join the MuggleCasters, along with our friends at PotterCast, for some Potter podcasting fun. You can subscribe right here in iTunes or direct download at this link. The show was recorded at the Borders of Westwood in Los Angeles, California on September 28th. Special thanks goes to our audio guy Chris who provided a flawless setup, and Borders for a fantastic job handling the event!

Julie Walters talks David Yates
In a new interview, the Mrs. Weasley actress discusses HP 5's director and explains how he captures the emotional depth of the book, and the atmosphere he creates on-set.

"He's very unassuming; they were in a way, Alfonso was, but he's fantastic. [David] is very into the emotional truth of it, the kids absolutely love it; he's very sweet and kind, and very, very into the story like a child is. And he's really into the emotional depths, and he's really fantastic, he's a lovely man."

Thanks to those who sent this in.
