Speculation, speculation
Speculation, speculation WARNING: This is a very opinionated post!

Keith Olbermann has made some bold public predictions about the end of the series on his TV news show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Make sure you read the second page of the article before making judgment. It is my personal belief, and not necessarily that of the rest of the MuggleNet staff, that he is not far off the mark in his guesses. Except for that whole Harry turning into a Muggle business. I mean, really?

In other news, Scholastic has published the results of their fourth fan poll question. They claim a majority of fans - 56% - believe that Harry will end up with Hermione, 20% believe that Ron will end up with Hermione and 19% believe that Harry will end up with Ginny.

Um, was Scholastic polling people who have actually read the books? 56% of fans are wrong. I quote JKR, in the interview Melissa and I conducted with her two summers ago:

JK Rowling: Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione. I do feel that I have dropped heavy hints. ANVIL-sized, actually, hints, prior to this point. I certainly think even if subtle clues hadn't been picked up by the end of Azkaban, that by the time we hit Krum in Goblet...

I would think it's difficult to interpret "Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione" and "anvil-sized hints" any other way, but apparently 56% of fans disagree with me (or just haven't read the interview... or Book 6... or Book 5... or Book 4...). But then, many fans still believe Dumbledore is alive, despite JK Rowling saying that he is "definitely dead." Come on, guys. Wishful thinking isn't going to bring him back.

Note that the question wasn't Who Do You Want to End Up With Whom?, but Who Will End Up With Whom?. There's a difference between wanting something to be true, and believing it is true. There is a word in the English dictionary for holding a belief without evidence, and in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary... I'll give you a hint, it starts with a D.

UPDATE: I don't know if I can make this any clearer, but I will try one more time.

I am not calling all Harry/Hermione shippers delusional! I respect H/Hr shippers who acknowledge the obvious: that JKR paired up Ron and Hermione, but wish she hadn't. The only people I am calling delusional are the shippers who try to wriggle and rationalize their way around "Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione" and still believe the two will make babies in Book 7. Right, because JKR was lying to us? HOPING is different from BELIEVING!

After reading the interview with JKR, how can ANYONE still believe that Harry and Hermione will ever be together?!

Posted by Arwen_the_Dark_Elf Jun 26th 2007

Oh my gosh, that is so funny! Of the entire human race, 56% of us are idiots.

Posted by HarryJP Jun 26th 2007

It's pretty obvious that it's Hermione/Ron. =/

Posted by Anna_Black Jun 26th 2007

I think it is extremely obvious that Harry ends up with Ginny and Ron with Hermione. There is no way that people can't notice that! And really... people still believe that Dumbledore is alive when JK herself said that he is dead... I guess some people really don't read the signs, but then again I don't want to be rude, lol

Posted by ashurlito Jun 26th 2007

4??

Posted by Gryffindork Jun 26th 2007

OMG. I love you Emerson. People are so retarded to think that JK's word is wrong. In the HP world, her word is law.

Posted by emmalee Jun 26th 2007

I agree, Emerson. It makes me so angry to hear of these people 'wishful thinking'.

Posted by domthadood Jun 26th 2007

wow, ppl are dumb. haha

Posted by matssundin Jun 26th 2007

who actually thinks harry and hermione r gonna end up tght?

Posted by Dirse Jun 26th 2007

Either fans are deliberately answering the poll wrong for giggles or most fans just don't hear or read JKR interviews. Sadly, reading comprehension is generally deplorable, so many fans just don't see the Ron-Hermione connection on their own.

Posted by iheartharry83192 Jun 26th 2007

If anyone actually still thinks that Harry and Hermione will get together.... they can't take hints or understand English! lol! I always wanted Ron and Hermione to get together! I hope that Ginny and Harry get back together... they were cute!

Posted by Marshy Jun 26th 2007

Just because their names are alliterative, doesn't mean they're meant for each other :) and the "made in america" ending is hi-la-rious.

Posted by Dreaming_Angel_Spirit Jun 26th 2007

Actually I think most of those people do know that it is Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny, but they just don't want to believe it. I just think there are a lot of Harry/Hermione shippers out there who just want this relationship to work out in the books as well, as in their fanfictions xD

Posted by deathly101 Jun 26th 2007

am i in the top 20? or top 10?

Posted by lovexlaugh_potter Jun 26th 2007

i love emerson's posts. R/Hr forever !!

Posted by mara_k Jun 26th 2007

Haha, I love it when Emerson addresses this kind of delusional stuff. I completely agree, how can only 19% believe that Harry and Ginny will end up together!?

Posted by ginnygal Jun 26th 2007

Either who ever they were polling deffinatly doesnt read the books or maybe they just were polling random people people who dont knoe nothing about Harry Potter. What ever they did they deffinatily did it the wrong way because everyone who like Harry Potter and actually goes on MuggleNet know Harry and Hermione will never happen because Ron and Hermione are going to happen JKR said it herself and everyone also know sif you read the books that Ginny and Harry are still in love with each other so who ever went to get the votes sorry but you did a REALLY BAD JOB!

Posted by leon_cita Jun 26th 2007

Ok ppl, what's wrong with wishful thinking? Why is it that whenever Emerson says something everyone thinks like he does? Stop thinking "of the entire human race, 56% of us are idiots"... Just give the people that want to believe for the time being that Dumbledore isn't dead the right to do so... give them a break, seriously.

Posted by IAteUmbridge Jun 26th 2007

That's because most of the people on Scholastic's web site are four and five year old little girls who made a wrong click on their way to the Magic Tree House page, and decided to vote in the Harry Potter poll because they think Daniel Radcliffe is a cutie and Emma Watson is pretty.

Posted by SalazarsSnake Jun 26th 2007

How can we be sure? Nobody knows - I think it is not possible to speculate about possible couples because nobody knows who will survive.... nobody can be sure that Harry, Ron, Hermione survive.... what do you think?

Posted by Gryffindork Jun 26th 2007

ummmm. jk said it herself. therefore, it's true. however, she does joke around a lot. but you can tell she's joking in the way she says it.

Posted by debbikins1991 Jun 26th 2007

Haha, thats funny! 56% of people out there are complete idiots! I cannot believe that there are still people out there that belive that stuff! I had to convince a 6th grader that Ron and Hermione are the couple, not Hermione and Harry!

Posted by LindaW Jun 26th 2007

Emerson is my favorite. Those results made me so angry. People need to realize the truth when its put in front of them.... "Come on guys," Well said, Emerson- WELL SAID!

Posted by ravencrap Jun 26th 2007

first of all, 56% of the harry potter population have never been in a relationship and haven't picked up on like the 50 hints per books of ron and hermione. second, how have we not heard this theory before? is this guy gonna be famous if he's right?

Posted by harrypotterqueen10 Jun 26th 2007

well i mean people do have a right to think whatever they want 2 but seriously i mean J.K. HAS given us so many hints about R/H that i mean it's weird that people would think otherwise. And about the whole Dumbledore thing...i do remember her comfirming somewhere that he was INFACT dead....but again people have the right 2 think whatever they want but honestly it's just odd that they would go against her word. Am I right?

Posted by Loran Jun 26th 2007

Emerson, I hope your inbox is ready to deal with the vast amounts of hatemail you're going to get from Harry/Hermione shippers now! Anyone with a modicum of sense knows that they're delusional, but most of us are clever enough not to admit it on a very very popular website!

Posted by chellabella Jun 26th 2007

Are they out of their minds???? They probably all got together to make a statement by voting. The only statement I'm getting off of this is DELUSIONAL! Does that term mean anything to them? How about 'several sunlit days'? Whatever, we know what's going to happen and thats what really matters, isn't it? It's what the real fans that will be lining up at midnight think.

Posted by Actress_Tanika Jun 26th 2007

Are these people complete IDIOTS! OF COURSE Ron and Hermione end up together and OF COURSE Harry and Ginny do! Plus, JK said so, and her word is god.

Posted by TheGreenPhoenix Jun 26th 2007

Top 20! But yeah, I think that is a pretty good idea that he's got formulated. And for the idiots that haven't actually read the series, I don't get how they can think that Harry and Hermione are going to get together. But other than that, I should get back to re-reading for the (at least) 4th time this year before the books come out.

Posted by irishonline Jun 26th 2007

well, if anyone dies all bets are off anyway... anyway, Olbermann's "alternate ending" is the funniest thing I've read all summer

Posted by YummySocks Jun 26th 2007

The Harry/Hermione shippers were stuffing the ballet because you could vote more than once. I've actually given several Harry/Hermione shippers links to the article. And they still think Harry/Hermione. Most of them are pretty stupid.

Posted by SiriusLoveGirl Jun 26th 2007

Ha, top 50. Cool. Anyways, that's really dumb. Her word is the word of God in the HP fandom and universe. I know that's what all those shippers want, but they really should put down what they think will happen. Unless of course, they think Harry and Hermione will end up together, for REAL. Then, maybe I'll steal Emerson's word and say they really ARE a but delusional. Nothing against H/Hr shippers, I think it's really an adorable ship. But if you think it's going to happen, well....

Posted by rhrshipper Jun 26th 2007

Right on, Emerson. Right on. It's one thing if it's "What's your favorite couple?" Okay, yeah. That I get. But this question asks for that which is plausible. I'd say JKR's direct statements of fact make it awfully plausible. *shakes head sadly*

Posted by Gryffindork Jun 26th 2007

harrypotterqueen10, you're right. Hagrid said in the first book you can't bring people back to life. Sooooooooo when they were carrying Dumbledore's body at his funeral, it's pretty obvious he's deader than a doorknob.

Posted by ournewcelebrity Jun 26th 2007

Maybe some ANVIL-SIZED hints fell on their heads, causing extensive brain damage?

Posted by sayWACKattack Jun 26th 2007

i dont think harry's going to die but i think i'd still rather see him die than sacrifice his magical abilities. .. (in reference to the oberman article)

Posted by Sarahluna Jun 26th 2007

*starts laughing* Oh, wow. That's great. Those poor people... I feel so sorry for them for when DH comes out. *grins*

Posted by Elisabet Jun 26th 2007

Well, that only shows that a lot of the Harry/Hermione-shippers haven't read the interview. Or the last book. Or any of the other books.

Posted by JLB25 Jun 26th 2007

I think there are just some people who don't want to admit that Dumbledore is really dead. Also, you would think by now that everybody knows that its Ron&Hermione, and Harry&Ginny. Especially since the interview that Emerson and Melissa did. Oh well I guess they will find out in Book 7 they are wrong!!!

Posted by meesha1971 Jun 26th 2007

Oh, come Emerson! Don't you know that J.K. Rowling was just lying to you to further her big red herring about Ron and Hermione? /sarcasm Ugh - I can't even type that with a straight face. LOL Seriously, Emerson, you pegged these guys two years ago - they haven't changed. They're just as delusional now as they were then - perhaps a bit worse. Quite frankly, I'm surprised Scholastic published the results of that poll with all the problems they had. The H/Hr fans at Portkey and Harmony forever were bragging about how they spammed the poll just to make R/Hr fans angry. As an R/Hr fan, I an honestly say that doesn't make me angry at all. That kind of petty, childish behavior is amusing - pathetic, but amusing. From what I've heard, someone went so far as to create a bot for the poll. The results of that poll are not accurate in the least.

Posted by sectumsempra99 Jun 26th 2007

ha ha i watched this yesterday!

Posted by phantomfluteplayer Jun 26th 2007

That is the case of *very* hopeful shippers...while I may not be the biggest fan of Ron/Hermione, I still think its cute and know its going to happen. Shippers are hard headed...its just a fact.

Posted by magicalme7 Jun 26th 2007

I would hate it if harry lost his magic. I wouldn't read another Harry Potter book again :) And then if Jo did that, she'd probably be sitting and laughing because she knows that she stole a little piece of everyone's soul. I think he's right in saying that Harry isn't going to die. I mean, if Jo did that, it would RUIN the franchise that's been built. And so many people would be angry.

Posted by TheTrio2AreHPGeeks Jun 26th 2007

It's Ron and Hermione. And I watched the video. I was like freaking out. I watched that very thing. Omg.

Posted by mara_k Jun 26th 2007

I'm kind of surprised Emerson agrees with Keith Olbermann's article. Seriously, Harry being zapped of his powers? That would be a terrible ending, in some ways it'd be better if he died. Plus I can't believe the Harry-is-a-Horcrux is still such a popular theory...

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jun 26th 2007

this chaps ideas of what will happen are pretty vague. he basically says harry will defeat voldemort after locating the horcruxes but have to sacrifice something in order to do so. well duh! i could have told you that. sorry im not impressed by his predictions

Posted by snapeward777 Jun 26th 2007

what the fudge??? so they think harrys gunna end up with hermione and rons gunna be single for the rest of his life or sumthing!!!???? LMFAO. these people obviusly haven't paid any attention to the books; cmon if theres anyone in here who cant see that its soooooooooooooooooooooo obvius that harry and ginny love each and that ron and hermione have loved each other since the third book then ur blind. ournewcelebrity, that comment just made me laugh so hard, thx, u just calmed me down i was soooooooo angry about this article

Posted by quill Jun 26th 2007

See, Ben...Emerson posts news stories sometimes...and, like I said, it's usually the interesting ones. I agree with the speculations, which also agree with what's in Mugglenet's book...the fact that Harry would have to give up magic though makes we cringe. I suppose he could still inhabit the wizarding world as a sort of squib, though. And the fact that 56% believe Harry and Hermione are going to get together makes me lose faith in the human race.

Posted by harrypotterqueen10 Jun 26th 2007

Gryffindork 1, thank you! Most of the H/H shippers are probably fans of the movies and haven't really read the book. I mean come on! seriously! R/H have been the little love/hate pair throughout the whole series! it is so obvious that they will get together. Anyone who has read the book can clearly see it. J.K.'s word is like the law! What she says goes! get it right people....

Posted by RyAn2006 Jun 26th 2007

lol well the Harry/Hermione shippers were obviously voting a lot! Anyway im more interested in Keiths predictions-and i must say they are exactly the same as mine! I honestly believe that that ending would prevent an 8th book but also an angry backlash! I wont revea what the predictions are as i honestly believe they are highly potential spoilers-but worth reading his views even if you are avoiding them!
