Speculation, speculation
Speculation, speculation WARNING: This is a very opinionated post!

Keith Olbermann has made some bold public predictions about the end of the series on his TV news show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Make sure you read the second page of the article before making judgment. It is my personal belief, and not necessarily that of the rest of the MuggleNet staff, that he is not far off the mark in his guesses. Except for that whole Harry turning into a Muggle business. I mean, really?

In other news, Scholastic has published the results of their fourth fan poll question. They claim a majority of fans - 56% - believe that Harry will end up with Hermione, 20% believe that Ron will end up with Hermione and 19% believe that Harry will end up with Ginny.

Um, was Scholastic polling people who have actually read the books? 56% of fans are wrong. I quote JKR, in the interview Melissa and I conducted with her two summers ago:

JK Rowling: Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione. I do feel that I have dropped heavy hints. ANVIL-sized, actually, hints, prior to this point. I certainly think even if subtle clues hadn't been picked up by the end of Azkaban, that by the time we hit Krum in Goblet...

I would think it's difficult to interpret "Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione" and "anvil-sized hints" any other way, but apparently 56% of fans disagree with me (or just haven't read the interview... or Book 6... or Book 5... or Book 4...). But then, many fans still believe Dumbledore is alive, despite JK Rowling saying that he is "definitely dead." Come on, guys. Wishful thinking isn't going to bring him back.

Note that the question wasn't Who Do You Want to End Up With Whom?, but Who Will End Up With Whom?. There's a difference between wanting something to be true, and believing it is true. There is a word in the English dictionary for holding a belief without evidence, and in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary... I'll give you a hint, it starts with a D.

UPDATE: I don't know if I can make this any clearer, but I will try one more time.

I am not calling all Harry/Hermione shippers delusional! I respect H/Hr shippers who acknowledge the obvious: that JKR paired up Ron and Hermione, but wish she hadn't. The only people I am calling delusional are the shippers who try to wriggle and rationalize their way around "Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione" and still believe the two will make babies in Book 7. Right, because JKR was lying to us? HOPING is different from BELIEVING!

Also, Olberman's predictions that he thought were spot on are totally off. J.K. Rowling can not be bought off!

CHRISTIANAEG!! I'm pulling my chair up next to yours with some popcorn too! Actually, am doing it now. :) To everyone: If that scholastic poll is basically answered by a bunch of 3rd - 5th graders, does this mean that if Emerson were to overhear a young, innocent child voice their wish of a H/HR ship he will bend over, get in their face and call them delusional? Would Emerson be mean to a small child like that? Oh, and rob 15...you're funny, keeping the fire fueled like that.

Posted by Ameeface Jun 26th 2007

Hannah, I apologise. I guess my frustration at those who wouldn't see reason to let us have our own opinion clouded my gaze x__x. I should have read your comment more clearly. I do actually agree with you now :D

Posted by jazzmaze24 Jun 26th 2007

For those tired of the D word, might I suggest some other words thanks to thesaurus.com (in relation to delusion, I couldn't find any to delusional): daydream, deception, error, fallacy, false impression, fantasy, figment, fool's paradise (my favorite), hallucination, illusion, lapse, misapprehension, misbelief, mistake, oversight, pipe dream, and self-deception.

Posted by mrssiriusblack Jun 26th 2007

MaverickDog, please PLEASE go to the top of mugglenet page and read the mugglenet/tlc interview with jkr. in this she says that IT IS RON AND HERMIONE!!!!!!!! I dont know why H/Hr shippers wont just let it go and take her word for it. i know it sucks to be wrong but she has said it straight out so just accept it and get over it. i repeat H/Hr is not gonna happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by alex_c98 Jun 26th 2007

"There is a word in the English dictionary for holding a belief without evidence, and in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary...I'll give you a hint, it starts with a D." Sorry to go way off topic here, but from an atheist's point of view, that's like calling people who believe in God delusional. So... that's kind of treading on thin ice. :/

Posted by EmeraldWitch Jun 26th 2007

I was reading some of the comments on the Scholastic website, and there were a lot of people who just like the ship, even though they know now that it's not happening(which is fine, I suppose, if that's what you like). Therefore, I'm going to hope that most of the 56% who voted H/Hr were confusing "what do you want" with "what will happen". However, there were an ALARMING amount of people that, after reading posts containing clips of what JKR said, said things like "We'll see what happens in book 7! Harry and Hermione are right for each other, and will end up together anyway!" That's right, Jo! They're getting what they want whether you like it or not! Who does that Rowling think she is, anyway, the author?

Posted by xOphoeniXfeath3r Jun 26th 2007

I agree with Ravenclawswisdom that love between friends preceded romantic love in terms of importance in the books, but I still think that romance will be important. Not that Book 7 will be full of snogging like Book 6, but that Harry's love for Ginny as well as that for his friends will motivate him in his fight against Voldemort.

Delusional!! ha ha . . AMEN emerson!!! I love you!

Posted by christianaeg Jun 26th 2007

Hi Hannah! It's just getting interesting isn't it? about Emerson meeting a smaller child and getting in their face with the whole H/Hr thing, I don't think he would. I met him this year, and he's a good person even if he's rough on the Harmony shippers! Anyhoo I'm going to get nice and relaxed so i can stay a while and watch all the drama unfold....

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Jun 26th 2007

Ameeface: don't worry about it, :)

Posted by kaze_ Jun 26th 2007

Also, people who say Olbermann's theories are stupid because they're based on finances... there is a second page. Read it.

Posted by Ameeface Jun 26th 2007

alex_c98, good point. Although, as a Catholic (which really doesn't matter) I haven't thought about it much. At the end of the day, believing one thing or another about Harry Potter is different to religion so you can't compare it. This is just about being a fan of a book and religion has nothing to do with it.

Posted by Ravenclawswisdom Jun 26th 2007

*Is bored* Hey I'll join christianaeg and Hannah_at_Hogwarts. Accio Chair! Accio Popcorn! Now I'm ready.

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Jun 26th 2007

Christianaeg: I don't think Emerson would either, I was being sarcastic. :) I pity anyone who has a slow server, comments are flying by! alex_c98 and ameeface: I too think that is a good point, but let's not tell that Malory woman!

Posted by LaTia24 Jun 26th 2007

Emerson is just cool. I like this post.

Posted by jazzmaze24 Jun 26th 2007

I see what you mean Ravenclawswisdom, but I do have to agree with xOphoeniXfeath3r. Though I still understand what you're saying because as an avid shipper, I imagined myself during the last go around (the 6th book) getting all excited for the confirmation of ships in the book. But as the date drew closer, in days instead of weeks prior, I realized I was much more giddy about the action; and also that I was just interested at that point in WHAT was going to happen to Harry, Ron, and Hermione instead of WHO was going to happen to them.

Posted by xOphoeniXfeath3r Jun 26th 2007

Can I join the ranks of the audience? XD *Summons popcorn*

Posted by mrssiriusblack Jun 26th 2007

alex_c98, emerson was talkning about HP only there is no need to go reading so far into it and making a big thing out of it!!

Posted by HarrylovesGinny92 Jun 26th 2007

How can they not see that it is Harry and Ginny and Ron and Hermione? ITS SO OBVIOUS! Have they not read the 6th book? BIG hits are in that book!

Posted by hpfan4ever07 Jun 26th 2007

actually the problem is how the poll was written and not that there's more harry-hermione shippers. the results are now 15% harry-ginny, 33% ron-hermione, 48% harry-hermione, and 4% lupin-tonks BUT if you add all the canon relationships (because really all the canon relationships should be one choice) they equal up to more than the 48% that harry-hermione has.

Posted by OMGWTFBBQ Jun 26th 2007

HA HA HA HA. i like the anvil picture.

Posted by hayes0008 Jun 26th 2007

thats exactly what i was thinking 56% of fans are delusional haha

Posted by christianaeg Jun 26th 2007

LOLOL I think I started a whole club of people watching! lets hope the popcorn supplies last!

Posted by littlelisa Jun 26th 2007

HAHA! Delusional! :)

Posted by antinous Jun 26th 2007

I'm glad to see that Emerson hasn't given up his relentless persecution of the delusional.

Posted by Boo_On_You Jun 26th 2007

See, Us H/Hr shippers still have endless hope even though most of us know it's gonna be R/Hr. But before that I seriously hope it's V/Hr, cause they were adorable. Anyway. I ship H/Hr and that just grinds your gears doesn't it, rhr shippers? Lol, just kidding. But yeah.

Posted by HP_reader Jun 26th 2007

Wow. People can be quite clueless. not to be rude or anything. :/

Posted by Ameeface Jun 26th 2007

D; I can't eat popcorn, it gets stuck in my brace. I only just got it *squirms*. Lol. Accio philadelphia and bread sticks. A little easier to eat. *Pulls up a bed*. Yeah, I'm in bed with my laptop, philli and listening to Mugglecast. Oh, this is the life. :) 23 days.

Posted by scriibled7 Jun 26th 2007

omg THANK YOU EMERSON!!

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Jun 26th 2007

Maybe we should have people bring extra popcorn? Oh, and drinks! Butterbeer please! And why not some Pumpkin Pasties? (Have you actually tried those? they are YUMMY!) okay, that was waaaaaaaaay off topic, sorry!

Posted by Ravenclawswisdom Jun 26th 2007

christianaeg, yes it appears so. Now if only I knew if we could conjur food out of thin air. What did I say for the WOMBAT again...

Posted by jen_92 Jun 26th 2007

Those are the stupidest poll results I've ever seen. I completely agree with everything you say, Emerson.

Posted by jazzmaze24 Jun 26th 2007

I don't know if the whole God comparison can be rightly applied in this situation, but I get what you're saying because religious people tend to be attack sometimes because of some of their blindless faith (not all, and I'm not trying to attack anyone). Also, religions clash with each other, kind of like ships--who's right? who's wrong? and that sort of thing. So, I guess I'm changing my mind, I think you might have a very valid point. And that was just my rant (I tend to rant a lot).

Posted by hpfan4ever07 Jun 26th 2007

adding to my earlier post: in another words the poll split up the canon shippers because i'm sure there's out there who believe ron should be with hermione, harry should be with ginny, and lupin should be with tonks. it would be a difficult choice although you can vote more than once in the poll.

Posted by christianaeg Jun 26th 2007

Well! Now that we've got the party started, enough popcorn, and butterbeer (no hannah never tried them but next time I'm in Border's i'll pick up a few!) let's go about correcting that poll! I'm starting to vote again... and again... and again!

Posted by Qwexva Jun 26th 2007

Kieth olbermann came up with a really smart theory! I'm surprised i haven't heard that one before! I agree that harry won't die. But his scar being a horcrux? i don't know. I've hear dthat one before and i'm not to sure i believe it. The snape basically saving harry, thats what i think too! I think i'd find it almost sadder if harry lost his powers rather than die. And emerson, people can be stupid.

Posted by Ravenclawswisdom Jun 26th 2007

Don't forget the pumpkin pasties! Or the Bertie Botts every flavoured beans! Or gummy slugs! And ice mice! Oh and chilled pumpkin juice, it's really hot over here...Yeah let's go fix the poll...wait this reminds me about the 100 mos influential people poll...I'm not sure if this will end well.

Posted by xOphoeniXfeath3r Jun 26th 2007

Well, in the case of religion, there's no "boss" (if you will) who can confirm or deny anything. In the case of Harry Potter, we have Jo, who can confirm or deny theories, ships, and the like.

Posted by Phoenix_Valor Jun 26th 2007

Funny, I asked Emerson about this very subject (delusional h/h) when I met him on the book tour. Looks like I asked too soon. lol *sigh* We were having similar (and in some cases, worse) shipper problems in the POTC fandom a few months ago with the Jack/Elizabeth shippers. Really, I think it's impossible for any fandom to escape shipper drama.

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe Jun 26th 2007

HAHAH Emerson strikes again! As the H/H Shippers blood begins to boil, their hopeless ignorant dreams are being fueled by this poll! I have once asked someone, how they interpreted JKR's comment "Yes, we now know its Harry and Hermione" as ... 'now' not 'later'. Which is absolutely absurd. They are F. R. I. E. N. D. S.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Clearly, 56% percent of the people need to read the books, and need to get a big smack in the back of the head.

Posted by nessava Jun 26th 2007

thank you thank you thank you emerson!!! i was just wondering that today. i mean seriously. have they been living under a rock? just saying...

Posted by Ameeface Jun 26th 2007

christianaeg: I'm voting again too. R/Hr. Even though I'm a H/Hr shipper, they're clearly going to happen so I'm voting for them - it asks "who winds up with whom?" not "who do you want to wind up with whom?" :]!

Posted by Hannah_at_Hogwarts Jun 26th 2007

How about some homemade pizza, with some romaine lettuce drizzled with olive oil and sea salt, roasted chicken legs....again, off topic. PLUS I'm getting way hungry now! I wonder if Emerson is watching all of this along with us? Seeing what his "D" word post has done?

Posted by DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY Jun 26th 2007

Emerson is clearly not the fan he used to be- now he hates H/Hr shippers and treats us like poo. We deserve some respect. Don't call us delusional!!

Posted by Hogwartsgirl52 Jun 26th 2007

WOO! Go Emerson!

Posted by emily_bemily Jun 26th 2007

Spoiler! if you don't want to read the article. I think that Harry losing his magic in the end would be a fairly pathetic way to end the series... almost as bad as her having him wake up in the end and realizing that it was all a dream. very lame. I'm not too concerned though- the Keith Olbermann really has no ability to make a better guess than any of us. I also completely trust JK to do what works the best.

Posted by xOphoeniXfeath3r Jun 26th 2007

Hannah_at_Hogwarts - Haha, yeah! Looks like the "D word" has gotten us way off topic, not to mention caused quite a bit of drama here. XD

Posted by christianaeg Jun 26th 2007

Hmm.. i'm having a burger lol! sorry for being off topic.. Anyway, sounds like a feast now! i've voted about 50 times now!

Posted by orangesho13es Jun 26th 2007

This is why I love Emerson; posts like that just make my day. H/Hr shippers seems to be coming on in full force w/ the impending end of the series. How more delusional can they get? 56% of the people that voted obviously need to read the books again.
