Speculation, speculation
Speculation, speculation WARNING: This is a very opinionated post!

Keith Olbermann has made some bold public predictions about the end of the series on his TV news show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Make sure you read the second page of the article before making judgment. It is my personal belief, and not necessarily that of the rest of the MuggleNet staff, that he is not far off the mark in his guesses. Except for that whole Harry turning into a Muggle business. I mean, really?

In other news, Scholastic has published the results of their fourth fan poll question. They claim a majority of fans - 56% - believe that Harry will end up with Hermione, 20% believe that Ron will end up with Hermione and 19% believe that Harry will end up with Ginny.

Um, was Scholastic polling people who have actually read the books? 56% of fans are wrong. I quote JKR, in the interview Melissa and I conducted with her two summers ago:

JK Rowling: Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione. I do feel that I have dropped heavy hints. ANVIL-sized, actually, hints, prior to this point. I certainly think even if subtle clues hadn't been picked up by the end of Azkaban, that by the time we hit Krum in Goblet...

I would think it's difficult to interpret "Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione" and "anvil-sized hints" any other way, but apparently 56% of fans disagree with me (or just haven't read the interview... or Book 6... or Book 5... or Book 4...). But then, many fans still believe Dumbledore is alive, despite JK Rowling saying that he is "definitely dead." Come on, guys. Wishful thinking isn't going to bring him back.

Note that the question wasn't Who Do You Want to End Up With Whom?, but Who Will End Up With Whom?. There's a difference between wanting something to be true, and believing it is true. There is a word in the English dictionary for holding a belief without evidence, and in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary... I'll give you a hint, it starts with a D.

UPDATE: I don't know if I can make this any clearer, but I will try one more time.

I am not calling all Harry/Hermione shippers delusional! I respect H/Hr shippers who acknowledge the obvious: that JKR paired up Ron and Hermione, but wish she hadn't. The only people I am calling delusional are the shippers who try to wriggle and rationalize their way around "Yes, we do now know that it's Ron and Hermione" and still believe the two will make babies in Book 7. Right, because JKR was lying to us? HOPING is different from BELIEVING!

First off everyone of u and emerson should be ashamed of your self, everyone has a right to their oppinon. and dont need people like you calling them names. please people get over it. it is just a silly pool and you all are getting worked up for nothing. i thought that when HBP came out that we would not have to hear about this anymore but i seem wrong as emerson has to post this on the site like some silly child.

Posted by thisandthat Jun 26th 2007

Why give this topic so much of our time, if JKR's closed the H/Hr option? It seems preposterous to be so bothered by it--makes our ship look unsure of itself. Let the Harmonians have their fun. It's all they've got if what JKR said in the interview is what we think she said. *shrugs*

eyeheartlupin...yeah, and getting along well is what makes a relationship stick. Little kids generally DO know what's going on. God, talk about an insult to little kids who don't have a tainted view on the world, etc., yet. They're typically right about things like this. :D

ournewcelebrity, ur comment made me laugh so hard!!!! *doubles over in exhaustion from laughter*

Posted by Sakah Jun 26th 2007

I wonder how Harry Potter is going to end. It'd also be cool if everything goes good between Tonks and Lupin.

Amen!

Posted by Heir_of_Ravenclaw Jun 26th 2007

Emerson, seriously, marry me... haha

Posted by Ravenclawswisdom Jun 26th 2007

"Come together right now, over me" Okay, now that I got that out of my system...come on people, why can't we just get over this and talk about Olbermann's predictions. I know it's entertaining and all, for the people with a sense of humour, but stop bashing each others ships. If you're going to bash a ship then fine, bash mine FLUFFY/GIANT SQUID! There does that give you something better to talk about?

Posted by Poison Jun 26th 2007

Just proves how childish Emerson really is. Starting something which will only make him look like a complete idiot come July 21. Hell what if no couples actually happen in DH then what Emerson?

Posted by toilantrouble Jun 26th 2007

Everyone can have there own oppinion but I agree with Emerson. He's right, it says who will end up together, not who do you want to end up together. This means it should be cannon and if Jo says it, its cannon. She clearly said that its Harry and Ginny, and Ron and Hermione. The poll therefore shouldn't have any votes for Harry and Hermione because it won't ever happen. The only place Harry and Hermione will ever exist is in people's minds and fan fiction. Personally, I ship Ron and Hermione in the books and Draco and Hermione in fan fiction because it seems most interesting although I understand that it is absurd and won't ever be in the books. This is stupid and everyone should stop arguing.

Posted by felixfelicis888 Jun 26th 2007

Harry and Ginny. Its obvious. and Ron and Hermione. SO OBVIOUS. DON'T BE STUPID.

Posted by hpwiz812 Jun 26th 2007

um ppl, its ron/hermione..i mean come on! and of course harry/lavender brown....DUH! *hides from the tomatoes being thrown* hehe, j/k

Delusionaaaal... Lol, Emerson, you Rule!! I think Harry & Hermione shippers have severe brain damage that definitely should be checked out.

Posted by MissJanet Jun 26th 2007

CHURCH!! Go Emerson! That post reflects exactly why fanfiction sort of makes my skin crawl.

hpwiz812: LMAO!

Posted by thisandthat Jun 26th 2007

What some people perceive and interpret from literature isn't always the obvious. How about showing a little kindness and tolerance to those who don't see things the way you do? All of this spouting off and name calling makes our shipers look stupid and nervous. Emerson knew what he was doing when he posted this "story" and I wish he'd stop baiting people. It doesn't help our fandom as it makes all of us look like bickering idiots to the outside world. There are so many other interesting and important things to discuss. Way to cater to the lowest common denominator, Emerson.

Posted by tortilla10 Jun 26th 2007

good lord. ok. yall won. so what? i mean, really. i ship harry/hermione. did i think it would happen? not really. but is that any reason to call someone delusional? its HARRY POTTER. a fictional book. personally, i think the stupidest people are the ones who are too wrapped up in their ship to be nice to other fans. i am more like hermione than ginny. and i would see myself going for a "harry" rather than a "ron". so what? we know its not gonna happen. so give it a rest. seriously. the way you have to keep rubbing it in peoples faces shows how insecure you are.

I AM SWEATING LIKE A DOG RIGHT NOW, JUST RAN 2.5 MILES AND I COME TO THIS!!!!!!!!! I THOUGHT WE WERE DONE AT 400 COMMENTS??????

Posted by Poison Jun 26th 2007

wow thanks I needed to book an appointment with a neurologist to get my head checked. might need a psychologist as well to understand where you r/hr shippers are coming from with your posts.

Posted by pottercakes Jun 26th 2007

I find it funny that people still belive Harry and Hermione will be together, but I gave up arguing with them. They'll eventually find out when they read Deathly Hallows. Then again, I'm guessing most of the people that voted in that Scholastic poll where little kids and surprisingly, alot of them think Harry and Hermione will end up together. Keith's predictions are ok. I disagree 100% with the whole Harry-loosing-his-magic thing. That, to me, would be worse than him dying.

Posted by rob15 Jun 26th 2007

definitely got the record for most comments

Posted by harmonyalways Jun 26th 2007

I'll make things clear first. I am not 5 years old,i love mugglenet and i have re-read each book at least 3 times. I agree that hr/r is very likely to happen. But if you pay closely attention, you will see that only Ron seems to fancy hermione and not hermione to ron. Their relationship is based on jealousy and anger most of the time... what kind of message would J.K.R show if they would end up together. H/Hr have a solid relationship with trust, loyalty and forgiveness. It was Harry decided to save her in the bathroom, he always goes looking for her when she is upset, his conscience is Hermione's voice, there even is a dream were he saw cho and then cho became hermione,he nearly faints when hermione gets hurt in ootp, they always grab each other in dangerous situations...-- Hermione was the only one who beleived him in gof, she is the only who stands up to him when he's angry and she is the only one who can calm him down. And the lists goes on. I am not saying that h/hr is going to happen but they are the best couple J.K.R coud have made. I hear you on this saying 'what about j.k.r's interview'. Well, we all know that she is a gifted writer so that makes her very familiar with words...she never said it IS hr/r,no she used the word we 'know'.Plus, when she said to re-read the books, maybe it ment to re-read and confirm what we though (that it is h/hr). Anyway, re-read the interview and look at it in a different perspective, maybe you'll understand what i mean. Again, i am not saying it's not going to be hr/r i am simply writting to you my thoughs.

Posted by niffler80 Jun 26th 2007

I find it amusing that so many people are getting defensive about Emerson's comments. He made valid points, and backed up his ideas with canon justification. I, for one, am grateful to see that someone in such a high position in the HP fandom world has the sense to be a die-hard fan without crossing the line to crazed fanatic. Thanks, Emerson, for keepin' it real.

Harry and Hermione

Posted by amy4dan1327 Jun 26th 2007

first of all for all those harry/hermione shippers, ur wrong!!!! it's totally going to be harry/ginny and ron/hermione!!! jk rowling even said it herself, well not the part about harry/ginny being together!!! but i think they should be!!! and second of all about the talk show thing, that was a little harsh!!! but everyone has their own opinions, and they are entitled to them!!! i just hope that voldemort dies and gets killed by harry, while harry lives and hopefully doesn't die, cuz i don't think harry's a horcrux, but whatever!! and so harry will live and marry ginny, ron and hermione will also live and yeah!!! and that would a good ending!!! but who knows what is truly going to happen!!! :)

Posted by Hermy_T Jun 26th 2007

Anybody, know what the "D" word is??

Posted by niffler80 Jun 26th 2007

"delusional"

Posted by harmonyalways Jun 26th 2007

Hello again, i just wanted to add something continuing my previous post: why can't you just all stop this ship war?! I mean everybody is aloud to think what they want to think. First of all it's really childish calling harmony shippers delusional... and by the way there are signs that show that harry and hermione would make a good couple. I'm not saying there are going to be together but they would look good together, and it is a fact, i mean they aren't best friends for nothing... Anyway just put yourselves in h/hr shippers place, would you like it to be insolted this way just because you prefer a ship more than an other...i mean serousily you(hr/r) are saying we (h/hr) are 5 years old...look in a mirror...sorry (i really don't want to insult anyonebut i had to say this) By the way, sorry if there's errors in the texts , i'm french...

Posted by Travis Jun 26th 2007

I've noticed before that those poll results seem very strange . Has anyone else noticed that the according to the "who will live, who will die?" results, about 90% of people seem to think that Voldy will live. Actually everyone has a surprisingly high number of people predicting that they will live. Meanwhile, the new "Will Voldemort be defeated?" has 80% of people saying that he will die. Obviously these polls are messed up. Also, I don't really think much of what Keith Olbermann is saying. None of it really seems that profound...he is just overly confident in his theories like every other fan who makes a bunch of complicated theories (myself included, except that my theories are right ;).

Posted by Lindsey11387 Jun 26th 2007

Sorry if this has already been said (I don't have the tme to read over 400 posts) but a huge H/Hr site has a direct link to the question and they have been telling people to vote like crazy. According to the rules of the poll this is not allowed. Also you may notice the over 80% of voters think Voldemort is going to live.

Posted by person92 Jun 26th 2007

It seems like we spend more time arguing over ships than book 7 theories.

Posted by mara_k Jun 26th 2007

It's not just ships where people can have their own opinions on how they hope things will go-- it's how it realy is in the books. Read the books seriously. Ntice those anvil-sized hints. It's there; it's canon. It has always been that Harry and Hermione love each other platonically, and it has always been shown that it will be Ron and Hermione romantically.

Posted by CR_the_Mighty Jun 26th 2007

ROFL. I love Emerson. XD

Posted by natasha06 Jun 26th 2007

Oh, Emerson. The poll isn't 56% H/Hr because they had more people who supported it. It's 56% H/Hr because a bunch of them voted hundreds (even thousands) of times each per person PER DAY. If you go to Portkey and Harmony Forever (be warned: those places are full of genuinely insane people) you can find threads that are laughable at how seriously they were taking this poll. There was this one idiot at Harmony Forever called "River Writer" who said they contributed at least 1500 votes. There were other people who said they refused to stop voting until their number got to a certain number. And then they have the nerve to complain when people call them cheaters or call the poll innacurate.

Posted by harmonyalways Jun 26th 2007

I Just found this on portkey and it pretty much says all i was trying to tell you http://talk.portke y.org/index.php?s=9a9fbce 872d5868f369aa112ae9bc0f6 &showtopic=23835

Posted by Poison Jun 26th 2007

You know what, your all talking from your butts. You could not vote more than once. If you tried it wasn't even considered in the vote. Your just feeling the burn now that your bloody precious delusion of ron and hermione may not be. How sad is that!!!! What's sadder is the R/Hr shippers admitting that they go to the Harmony sites.....why you hate us so much, why do you want to go and read up there. Emerson....hope you have the guts to say you were wrong if it does turn out H/Hr.

Posted by freem Jun 26th 2007

Can I just say YAY KEITH OLBERMANN! ... okay, he's a guilty pleasure... whatever.

Posted by Im4everawesome Jun 26th 2007

hahaha that's the same theory I've had all along how the book would end :)

Posted by xdeanna Jun 26th 2007

Hahaha, Keith Olbermann cracks me up - especially with that reference to the series finale of the Sopranos. The idea of the series ending with a muggle Harry Potter has always flitted around the edges of my mind. I think about it every so often, but I think that it would be a little trite if the series ended that way, too. I don't know... But really, what's Keith Olbermann saying that we don't already know or we haven't already thought about? It's all old news to me.

Posted by jean1 Jun 26th 2007

I don't like to think of myself as a stupid person, although not doubt I do certain stupid things. Perhaps one of those things is shipping H/Hr, and yet I still do it. Why is that? Well, I prefer it to most other ships, for one. I expressed that preference in the Scholastic poll, and not simply as a result of wishful thinking. I have read the books - yes, all of them - and I have read the interviews - yes, even that one - but I still think there is good evidence that H/Hr may come about. The alchemical theories, the Austen theory - I wasn't clever enough to come up with them or write them, but I am clever enough to realise that they have merit. Are they the only shipping evidence that has merit? No. I can see the anvils as well as the rest of you. (The Red Herring theory.) I can read the interviews as well as the rest of you - some might say that I read too much into the by resting my interpretation on the fact that the person being interviewed is an excellent author who understands full well how words are used, and how they can be phrased to allow misinterpretation. Per haps it is me misinterpreting. But if I can allow you your shipping preferences without feeling the need to deny well thought out evidence, insult your intelligence, impugn your reading skills, and denigrate your character, then I really would appreciate being given the same courtesy. After all, I'm surely not the only one with a Mum who told them "If you can't say anything nice, don't say it at all." That includes being called delusional and illiterate. I may well be delusional and illiterate, however I would rather be a sloppy reader than be plain mean to other people. The first can be remedied with practice. The second speaks to a character flaw that is not so easily fixed. To be frank, it smacks of bullying. Can we not just live and let live, and let other people have their theories and enjoyment, without feeling the need to squash it? Thank-you for reading, and have a nice day, ev...

Posted by Ravenclawswisdom Jun 26th 2007

Poison, that was a little rude. And yes you could vote more than one...please don't be so rude, or you'll bring out the bad side in people. I'm not worried about this poll at all, for it shows no truth. The only thing that holds truth is the book and Jo's word. Some people go on the Harmony sites, but some Harmonians go onto Heron sites, I myself have seen them. But those are only certain people.

Posted by ladydisdain Jun 26th 2007

I love you, Emerson.

Posted by football1290 Jun 26th 2007

I think that the guy who claims to make his predictions has no idea whatsoever of what he is talking about. He mentions in the beginning something about how would fans feel if they offed the main character with the CRUCIATUS CURSE. Well any real fan knows that the cruciatus curse is not the killing curse.

Posted by dancequalslife24 Jun 26th 2007

DELUSIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

Posted by sscobster2 Jun 26th 2007

I absolutely LOVE Emerson! His use of scarcasm is amazing, I give him kudos for saying that to the still hopefull Harry/Hermione shippers. They need to get over it. Can anyone say DELUSIONAL?!?!

Posted by nickflamel Jun 26th 2007

must admit up front-have not read anything in this particular crud-will make several points- first- anyone remember poll where jk finished 7th in influential people behind the likes of a reality show reject??? second- if trio and ginny survive they will be with who the were with as the 6th book ended.. and last- how can anyone take obermann seriously, someone who could not make it at espn??? if fact oberman is very wry in his humor and this is just way, way ,way out enough to be puton- i also personally am avoiding stories of predicting book happenings in hp7 coming out- jk is smarter than all the field. so, you may get lucky..but, there is your prediction out there for all to see....and it is rubbish..how embarassing. my personal solution is to skip that twaddle and wait for the great coming of hp 7

Posted by rob15 Jun 26th 2007

well said nickflamel............... ....NOT!!!!!!

Oh my god I haven't laughed that hard in a looong time. if anyone else got that reference drop me a line otherworldlyhills@hotmail .com
