Harry Potter makes girls violent
A prominent US psychologist says popular fictional characters such as Hermione Granger could be contributing to an increase in violence among girls.

We'll add this to the list of other things Harry Potter has been held responsible for possibly causing: headaches from causing kids to read for extended lengths of time, back problems for forcing kids to lug around the monstrous fifth book, chauvinism, devil-worshiping, fatism (discrimination against obese people), "postPotter depression" (how we feel after we finish a book and settle down for the multi-year wait for the next installment), forced abortions in China, and global warming.

Okay, I made the last one up, but you get the idea - Harry is a popular scapegoat. Don't get your knickers in a twist over this one.

Posted by Freak_of_7 May 29th 2006

Huh? devil-worshiping? wat r they playing at?? and Hermione does not cause violence!!!!! this is insane!!!!!!

Posted by godot May 29th 2006

Yep. I completely agree. They seem to add Harry's (etc) name as a scapegoat for everything that is wrong in this world! They seem to forget about the number of children who have discovered the delights of reading, just because of this series. It seems to me, that they just tie this series up with their dubious theories as a way of getting people to read them. Otherwise, nobody would bother with their idiotic thoughts and unresearched ideas.

Posted by swimfish May 29th 2006

Ohhhh please!!!!!!!!! This is soooo silly!! I love the character of Hermione! and I'm not violent at all.... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGG!!!! HURT PSYCHOLOGIST !!!!!!!! HURT PSYCHOLOGIST!!!!!!!!!............... .........hmmmm so anyway....

Posted by Zoe May 29th 2006

Wat ever as if that is true. I am obessed with harry potter and i am not violent or anything.. seriously these people are stupid GO HARRY

Posted by Runes May 29th 2006

That's so stupid! Why do these people keep trying to attack Harry Potter just for no reason at all? ^_^ I find it hilarious. Well, anyway, if only they read the books, they'll know that Hermione never said "That felt good" in the book. That line was only in the movie. So, technically, its the scriptwriter who is causing violence among girls! Now that's blasphemy! [/sarcastic]

Posted by Jubexchix May 29th 2006

Man, I might have to make this short, since I have such a bad headache from reading too much....anyway,where did they let THIS guy get a degree in psych? How did he even pass the exam?! Whatever...my violent tendencies are forcing me to throw watermellons at him now...

Posted by Walburga May 29th 2006

Haha, stupid psychologist. It is not Hermione that makes girls more violent it is Michael Gambon. You should get your facts straight ye dum muggle. It is an honour for the HP books to have such attention. I hope this encourages people to pick up the book. Thank you for the free marketing campaign my dear misguided muggle psychologist.

Posted by dobby_rocks May 29th 2006

Well I have to say I am not too surprised, Hermione is violent violent character. j/k

Posted by amandeep_sagoo May 29th 2006

This is utter rubbish, commonly known as bull shhh. "Oh look i knocked somones nuts out coz im trying to be hermione granger [sarcasm]", totally and utterly rubbish, it stinks

Posted by swimfish May 29th 2006

and besides... it would feel good to hit malfoy... not the actor, people... but the character... ohhh yeah.......

Posted by wishfuiiy May 29th 2006

I just think it's funny that people think HERMIONE is violent. The most violent thing she's ever done besides punching Malfoy was... ... Exactly.

Posted by granfalloon May 29th 2006

Due to their weight and pointy corners, Harry Potter books do make excellent projectile weapons...

Posted by pippin_poo May 29th 2006

Now that is just ridiculous, they always seem to be making up stupids things to sound professional like some ads and da vinci code... Get a life yer people chow

Posted by Darius May 29th 2006

american people can't surprise me anymore.. how is it possible to say something like that? The worst is that people read those stuffs and believe it!

Posted by teabag87 May 29th 2006

All I can say is what will Harry Potter be blamed for next???? Hermione? Violent?? Hahaha.

Posted by lord_hellfire May 29th 2006

Yeah, we're heard it all. And global warning isn't a joke. Books are made of paper. To manufacture paper a lot of trees are cut down, so they can't stop polution and we have global warming. Harry potter is printed in so many countries in so many copies, and has so many pages that it's one of most poluting books in history. It also promotes terrorism (Voldy and co.), homosexualism (Harry + Ron - don't ask me why), reckless driving (all brooms are one or two seated with V8 engines - quote from one of the newspapers, they were comparing young drivers with Harry Potter) and of course satanism (especially in GoF, polish edition, page 666 - wormtail uses magic)

Posted by meandlunabffl May 29th 2006

Hehe...the sore backs are worth it though...HPS THE BEST EVA YEAH...I would have been first if only i hadent been on the forum i started it but yeah...anyways Harry Potter is the best...how dare you say that...

Posted by gazzersgirl May 29th 2006

Well, while I think that in general, using Hermione was a pretty poor example out of all the characters with any sor of violent history. However, the message from the third film/book is pretty straightforward and while most of us are wise enough to know that just because HERMIONE hits someone doesn't mean we all should, not everyone gets it. You wouldn't believe all the dumb people out there who would use that scene as an excuse (they're right behind all the dumb people who blame Harry Potter for something stupid like Bush being in the White House or something equally preposterous). So while it may seem like a silly idea (and it is), its not completely without a little clout.

Posted by Walburga May 29th 2006

I have to admit that I did get a bad headache and sore eyes after reading OotP. but it was worth it!

Posted by crazyofpotter May 29th 2006

joke of the year !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by MissKaye May 29th 2006

Ugh this psychologist is beyond stupid, & i agree how in the heck did he get his licsense. The fact of the matter is that it is a parent's job to teach their children what is fiction & what is non-fiction. It's that simple. Besides it's our choice if we wanna read till we cant anymore, i mean it's not JKR fault that she's such a talented writer and has kept us reading from book 1! & wow i have school books that weigh heavier than the 5th book. & i have back problems b/c of that. why dont u write about that u stupid psychologist. why dont u write about how we are forced to carry a certain amount of books each day to class. & the rest of it is ridiculous-devil worshiping? please. he probably does it himself. Here's a new jobline for you, why dont u focus your time on helping children who have been raised in violent homes b/c their parents drink & do drugs. Not because they've read a harry potter book. Just an idea. Im almost positive that harry potter books dont lead you to use unforgivable curses in the future. what a load of rubbish. I hope this psychologist doesnt live in TX.

Posted by Joanne May 29th 2006

loooooooooooool any pain inflicted upon as a result of readin harry potter is worth it! But saying a role model like Hermione of all people encourages or inspires girls to go use violence is ridiculous, so ok she hits malfoy like once big deal! if anything she is detering people from using violence using figrues such as dudley dursley who is portrayed as a bully and instantly someone who is disliked by readers. Also people like Malfoy and his henchmen are equally hated - so why would someone use violoece as a result of reading harry potter when they know that people resent those figures so much. So meh to you prominent US psychologist! and harry potter rulesssssssss woooo!!!! and YAY EMERSON POST!!!!

Posted by feebsicle May 29th 2006

Hahaha! That is hilarious. Hermione Granger is such a bully, beating people up left and right. Her middle name IS "Fisticuffs of Blood" after all. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Harry Potter, and if anything, these people who blame the books for such preposterous things should be commending it for its brilliant use of morals and definitive stances on right and wrong. It probably teaches your kids how to respect others, and be confident of their own individuality! Last time I checked, those things didn't fall under the "violence" category.

Posted by Scarlett May 29th 2006

I would just like to point out that in the book Hermione slapped Draco, not punched

Posted by shirley May 29th 2006

I wouldn't be surprised if they'll really start to blame the HP books for global warming too...

Posted by MissKaye May 29th 2006

& btw i doubt that hermione munching malfoy in the face has encouraged girls to rob, kill, or have orgys. for goodness sakes. do they watch the news? do they not realize the world we live in. i mean come on. men arent the only ones who do these things today. they make it seem like women are supposed to act like they did in the 1800's. Hey you know what if a guy is being a you kno what then definately he's gonna get punched in the face. sometimes thats the only way they'll learn. Women of today arent scared we take action. but a book such as harry potter does not influence that. ppl who kill, rob or do things of that nature are crazy. & have prob never read a book in their life. like i said they prob were brought up by bad parents who drank and were abusive. so psychologist please look into that

Posted by iceboots May 29th 2006

I really don't buy that, Hermione only hit Draco once in the film, it's not like she's Buffy. But at least the news got Emerson back :)

Posted by gincarnated May 29th 2006

"back problems for forcing kids to lug around the monstrous fifth book," Thats too funny.

Posted by Alex May 29th 2006

Yeah... I finished reading one of the books last night and went to school and bashed up all these kids. I tried to bash the teachers who pulled me off my friend too but I wasn't strong enough. pfft, what a load of rubbish I've been reading Harry Potter for years and I only occassionally get violent tendencies =D

Posted by apwbdumbledore May 29th 2006

Is that "psychologist" in anyway relatet to that Simon Walters guy who wrote that other load of nosense? because he has clearly never ever touched the books, let alone read them. maybe he just saw that movie scene. Because the mistake of believing Malfoy would be a person not worth punching, can't be made by anyone who ever took a closer look at the books knows that Malfoy is an arrogant snob who is seriously in need of a comeback down to earth. And that is a polite description concerning what he tried to do to buckbeak, Hagrid the Trio. Besides that, he his also the one responsible for Dumbledore's death!

Posted by Inner_eye May 29th 2006

This made my day! It's so hilarious!YAY Emersons alive!

Posted by Oboist May 29th 2006

How bloody stupid! Hermione hit Malfoy because he's a git, and that's the only reason Ron and Harry encouraged it. I'm sure no one would condone her going around hitting random people for no reason. Besides, I'm a firm believer that Hermione is an ideal role model for girls. I've never seen a fictional character inspire girls to be all that they can be until Hermione came along. Psychology is one of my majors at my university, and I think that while girls may be getting more violent, Hermione was not a good example to use there.

Posted by dreamymist May 29th 2006

LOL! That is so funny and so riduculous!

Posted by pigwidgeon May 29th 2006

i love the list emerson!!! anyway, the kind of girls who are really violent are hardly likely to have picked up a book ever.

Posted by TDeSou May 29th 2006

Why is it that when anyone says something bad about the world of Harry Potter, every comment board is abusing the person who said it! It’s terrible! Just like the woman from Gwinnett Country or whatever it was who wanted to take the Harry Potter books off the shelves in the library, everyone abused her! She may have had her own reasons, and people don’t start these kinds of things just for the fun of it, but here we are and everyone is abusing this psychologist Maybe she does have her own reasons, maybe ‘Hermione’ is making some girls violent. I’ll tell you this, if this woman is a psychologist then she must have got a degree and she wouldn’t be stupidly idiotic. She knows what she’s talking about, remember, Hermione can be bossy and jealous. What I’m going to do in my spare time tomorrow is list the pros and the cons (affirmatives & the negatives) of Hermione. I’ve already found a few, and you would be surprised to know that just maybe this woman is right in what she is saying. But I must say, it really is pathetic hoe EVERYONE on this comment board is bag mouthing this woman, you should all be ashamed with yourselves. You’re all so obsessed with Harry Potter that when something comes up abusing the topic, in this case, the books are causing violence; you go against the person at first glance. I bet you that when you all saw this news headline you went, “Oh, what a pathetic and stupid old woman, she’s soooo wrong,” and you say this without even looking at the facts. I’d be glad to see if someone actually posted a comment saying that this woman might be right. Listen to this comment posted by Walburga 41 minutes ago. This is an example...

Posted by pigwidgeon May 29th 2006

its true that it does get quite painful to read for a whole day. my neck and arms really hurt after HBP.

Posted by TDeSou May 29th 2006

of what I’m talking about, by reading this comment I can tell that ermmm…..Walburga need’s to get HER facts straight. This comment is posted by Timothy (TDeSou). ©Timothyco.uk

Posted by The_Maltese_Fan May 29th 2006

That news comment was so funny, especially global warming. And I say that this is the best way to deal with these kind of 'argiungs' against Harry Potter. We should just be humouress about them (I'm not sure if 'humouress' exists by the way).

Posted by Isil_Helyanwe May 29th 2006

Haha, I'm not angry at this at all! It's hilarious! Actually, I have been suffering from back pains, headaches from reading too much and post-Potter depression... OMG! And the books are contributing to the destruction of the Amazon rainforest!!

Posted by Kaammini May 29th 2006

Violent? I'm just going to leave that one to sort itself out.

Posted by xXSophieXx May 29th 2006

Haha, thats made my day that has! Hermione-violence, ive neva heard such rubbish lol :)

Posted by Walking_Doodle_loving_Moony May 29th 2006

Ok, that's just a stupid thing to say. But I have post-Potter depression.

Posted by ricecracker May 29th 2006

WHAT?!? That is so not true! I mean, just because you're a big fan of something, or just because you enjoy reading those not mean your turning into a violent maniac! That is rubbish! Totally. "devil-worshiping"... what is that on? Hmph!

Posted by Hermione_Granger_fan May 29th 2006

I'd also like to point out that Ron and Harry did not encourage her to hit Malfoy. On the contary, Ron tried to pull her hand away from Malfoy and she replied "get off Ron!" - Page 216 UK edition If anything, the part where she slaps Malfoy is showing how out of character she has become, due to the stress of taking too many subjects. Also, Malfoy did everything to deserve what he got, and I although slapping him was perhaps not the best course of action to take, it taught Malfoy a lesson which was coming to him. GO HERMIONE! P.S I lose faith in humanity when I read such unfounded coments that this so called 'prominant psycologist' has made. I mean, scraping the barrel?

Posted by Walburga May 29th 2006

Dear Timothy. I dont understand what your point is. I was being sarcastic.

Posted by Walburga May 29th 2006

BTW Timothy. If you actually read the article you would have known that the psychologist is a man. Get yout facts straight.
