Harry Potter makes girls violent
A prominent US psychologist says popular fictional characters such as Hermione Granger could be contributing to an increase in violence among girls.

We'll add this to the list of other things Harry Potter has been held responsible for possibly causing: headaches from causing kids to read for extended lengths of time, back problems for forcing kids to lug around the monstrous fifth book, chauvinism, devil-worshiping, fatism (discrimination against obese people), "postPotter depression" (how we feel after we finish a book and settle down for the multi-year wait for the next installment), forced abortions in China, and global warming.

Okay, I made the last one up, but you get the idea - Harry is a popular scapegoat. Don't get your knickers in a twist over this one.

Forced abortions in China? What's the problem with those HMS Harmony guys. I do admit that I would have preferred the H/Hr relationship myself (as can be easily seen at my E-Mail adress ;-)), but to be honest, those love storys are a not-so-important side plot to me! One can easily find a fitting fanfic (of partly very good writers) for his or her preferred relationship! Best regards Sigi

OK, I am a girl, and I've watched lots of movies and read lots of books, and it seems pretty clear to me, and all of us who've read the book that what Hermy did in POA, the Book, was SLAP Draco, not punch. What could be more traditional and old fashioned than a lady slapping an ungentlemanly cad? And there's no question that Malfoy was being an obnoxious cad, and he deserved a slap. The punch was just in the movie, and I suppose that was put in to give the scene "more punch", as it were. Actually I thought it was a bit much. Maybe it was considered the more modern way of doing it. But to assert that Hermione as a character was doing something new-fangled and more violent in the book is quite simply ridiculous! He may be right about girls becoming more violent than they used to be, and about the film sending out a violent message in that spot. However, it was just a film, and I think most of us girls haven't started whacking our enemies or anyone else because of it! Well, I know I haven't!

I don't know about you guys but after I read Harry Potter I feel so violent I don't know what to do with myself:)

Posted by DarkRayne May 31st 2006

Well, sure I've smacked a few people, but NOT because of Harry Potter! If anything, it's made me a bit nicer.

Posted by potterlovver814 May 31st 2006

That's stupid. Harry Potter is the best obsession I've had in my life... it certainly does not make girls more violent or cause abortion. People just naturally need someone or something to blame when bad things happen, so I guess Harry Potter is a scapegoat.

Posted by iloveharry May 31st 2006

actually, you know what? they are right! when i was TWELVE YEARS OLD and read the harry potter books, immediatly afterwords i felt a sudden urge to go out and murder, maime and seriously injure people!! YEAH RIGHT!!!!! hey mr. PSYCHOlogist, GET A LIFE, AND READ A BOOK!!

Posted by DPFVici May 31st 2006

I don't understand why people always try to blaim the Potter books for everything. I mean "My daughter hit someone." Blame Harry Potter. "That guy robbed a store." Blame Harry Potter. This is getting ridiculus! I can understand them thinking it inspires witchcraft, at least before reading the books and understanding what they're all about, but then they should realize that they are wrong. Those Anti Harry Potter people should realize that they are outnumbered. There is no way that they are going to get all the billions of obsessive Potter fans to say "Oh no! Hermione inspires violence and the books give me backaches! I'm so not buying the 7th book! Even after reading and dissecting the first 6. I'm not going to have anything to do with the one that will answer questions I've had since Philosopher's Stone because Hermione slapped Malfoy like he deservered! Nope. Never touching these books again." There are too many people who love these books and who care too much to have them squashed out. I mean, even if they got them taken out of libraries and schools and no one was allowed to read them, I would find a way, and so, I'm sure, would the many fans who don't care if their backs and necks hurt for a little while after reading the books. It's worth it. It's worth every single second of pain. There may be a few bad things about these books and what they cause, but look at all the good that's come from them! Kids today fell in love with the new technology we have today, then Jo Rowling comes out with a series of books that make the kids turn off the TV and grab the book and the reading lamp, and they're trying to squish them out! I can't believe the hipocrisy of our world! They approve of violent video games and movies, then Harry Potter comes out, and they are tearing it page from page because it's too violent, too evil, too this, too that. LEAVE THE POTTER BOOKS ALONE!!!!!!! YOU ARE FIGHTING A LOSING BATTLE!!!!!!!! P.S: DPF = Devoted Potter Fan

Posted by HP_nerd May 31st 2006

wow. It's hard to believe some things like that. Harry Potter IS a popular scapegoat....and that's horrible.

Posted by anangeliam05 May 31st 2006

Oh my gosh! Thats a load of crap lol...

Posted by Grey May 31st 2006

I'm sorry, this is clearly all my falt. I have put all 6 of my Potter books in a bag and hit the Phylologist (who has this theory) over the head, because I was feeling very violet after reading them:)

Posted by Ilovedanielradcliffe May 31st 2006

*uses evil girl violence to choke psychologist* but who knows? someone might find that cool and go do it! girl power. it happens. it some cases, he is right, but in so many he is wrong. Watching sailor moon could make people violent.. maybe the "war in iraq" is making people violent, that is real life. real stupid life

Posted by Grey May 31st 2006

Harry Potter has inspired me to become a cage fighter (is that what they're called?lol):)

Posted by bouncingferret41 May 31st 2006

that may be the most sexist thing i've read, ever. supposedly girls are the only ones who sit around reading books, only learning anger management from fictional characters, while boys go out and play team sports?? whoever wrote this article needs to do a lot of explaining...

Posted by weatherby551 May 31st 2006

Oh yes, after I read Harry Potter books I immediately begin searching the streets for innocent people to take out my violence on. Actually, I just finished the fourth book and proceeded to throw it out the window at a young boy on the street. Now I'm planning to widen that hole in the ozone layer a bit, fatten up some unsuspecting children, and plant seeds of racism in anyone with an open mind. It's simply terrible.

Posted by usd443 May 31st 2006

I think this is bull nobody forces people to read Harry Potter.

Posted by sjmcfarland May 31st 2006

The 666th comment. I feel violent.

Posted by xony Jun 1st 2006

Yeah, sure, because girls should be perfect and not fight or talk louder than a whisper. They should stay home and cook and watch soap operas 'cuz that's what's normal girls do while boys go out and hit each other with clubs like trolls ¬¬ God, this pissed me off

Posted by TDeSou Jun 1st 2006

Why is it that no one will EVER EVER EVER EVER (EVER EVER EVER) EVER read a comment properly in their life??!!?? WHY!!!!!!(?)??! People, by all means, read my 3rd latest comment and look at the facts. If you don't see the facts, then you probably haven't looked hard enough. Anyway, don't only read my comment, well, read it first, jot down key points THEN revise! When I say revise I mean look at most of the previous comments on this comment board, and look at ALL of them, and stuff like that ect..... Anyway, here is my comment, remember, look LOOK! Why is it that when anyone says something bad about the world of Harry Potter, every comment board is abusing the person who said it! It’s terrible! Just like the woman from Gwinnett Country or whatever it was who wanted to take the Harry Potter books off the shelves in the library, everyone abused her! She may have had her own reasons, and people don’t start these kinds of things just for the fun of it, but here we are and everyone is abusing this psychologist Maybe she does have her own reasons, maybe ‘Hermione’ is making some girls violent. I’ll tell you this, if this woman is a psychologist then she must have got a degree and she wouldn’t be stupidly idiotic. She knows what she’s talking about, remember, Hermione can be bossy and jealous. What I’m going to do in my spare time tomorrow is list the pros and the cons (affirmatives & the negatives) of Hermione. I’ve already found a few, and you would be surprised to know that just maybe this woman is right in what she is saying. But I must say, it really is pathetic hoe EVERYONE on this comment board is bag mouthing this woman, you should all be ashamed with yourselves. You’re all so obsessed with Harry Potter that when something comes up abusing the topic, in this case, the books are causing violence; you go against the person at first glance. I bet you that when you all saw this news headline you went, “Oh, what a pathetic and stupid old woman, she’s soooo wrong,” and yo...

Posted by TDeSou Jun 1st 2006

-u say this without even looking at the facts. I’d be glad to see if someone actually posted a comment saying that this woman might be right. Listen to this comment posted by Walburga 41 minutes ago. Haha, stupid psychologist. It is not Hermione that makes girls more violent it is Michael Gambon. You should get your facts straight ye dum muggle. It is an honour for the HP books to have such attention. I hope this encourages people to pick up the book. Thank you for the free marketing campaign my dear misguided muggle psychologist. This is an example of what I’m talking about, by reading this comment I can tell that ermmm…..Walburga need’s to get HER facts straight. This comment is posted by Timothy (TDeSou). ©Timothyco.uk

Wackos...

Posted by myhermione Jun 1st 2006

And TDeSou: You might be right that people on here are pretty crazy about Harry and don't give HP critics a chance. But then, i really think this "hermione makes girls more violent" is ridiculous. She might be bossy sometimes, she might have slapped Malfoy, but that is not all she is. Mainly she is loyal and concerned for her friends. Also, speaking of people having degrees and therefore knowing what they are talking about: I know of psycologists who actually bought their degrees because they failed their exams three times... Others are so proccupied with there own problems (because believe me, even a good mark in psycology doesn't have to make you see clearer when it comes to your own problems), that they can't reflect on certain things without prejudice. I don't know what kind of person that psycologist was, but i just think you don't have to take everything seriously just because someone's got a drgree.

Posted by usd443 Jun 1st 2006

Harry Potter is blamed for everything that goes wrong.

Posted by usd443 Jun 1st 2006

Harry Potter doesn't make people violent this psychologist makes people violent.

Posted by usd443 Jun 1st 2006

Anyone who has ever read a Harry Potter book knows that Hermione is possibly the least violent character in the books. Just for the record people like Draco should be punched.

Posted by Grey Jun 1st 2006

Phychology in general is a bit messed up anyway. It's all this Sigfried (I think that his name) nonsence. That all men want to kill their fathers and marry their mothers and that all women secretly want to be men. It's rediculous. And any way, any thing can make people violent. I think that Hermionie has influenced people more to study, be smart and work hard than anything else.

Posted by Tabuler Jun 1st 2006

I know I am going to be sorry for getting involved with this one, but all psychology is not based on the studies of Sigmund Freud. In fact, almost all of his theories on the human phsyce have been proved questionable and it is said that Freud was obsessed with sex and thought that all human actions were based on sex drive. As far as modern psychology it is questionable because it is almost impossible to prove anything, because every persons system of thinking is different. I know that we are all laughing really hard because of the latest theory on why HP ruins the world, but don't make it an attack on psychology. Also, could everyone stop attacking TDeSou, it kind of makes me mad that just because he is trying to look at other aspects of the statement than the vast majority everyone feels the need to jump down his throat. Emerson told everyone not to get upset over this one and people are going off on Timothy for trying not to do the HP thing and blindly agree or disagree with something. Puffskein, you are completely correct, it is so true that polite young women have been seen slapping rude gentleman since... well since forever. It is true that violence is on the rise in not only girls, but in boys as well and I am happy to see that people are trying to figure out why, I just hope that they reexamine their theory and find a way to make it better instead of pointing fingers.

Posted by hpchico786 Jun 1st 2006

Forced abortions..well were goin to the firey remains of heck...:) ne wayz so we might as well enjoy this horrible satinism... lololololol

Posted by MissKaye Jun 1st 2006

Youre right Tabuler, however, Timothy shouldn't make a point about "abusing" the psychologist, & then turn around and point out someone who is JUST expressing their opinion and making them feel stupid. I totally respect everyone's opinion & have no further comments about this issue. Its already dead. It just doesnt seem fair that he thinks his opinion is more valid then his/hers. alot of people on here find this funny anyways and have been sarcastic in one way or another. So all in all, fine state your opinion but dont go attacking other comments as well.

Posted by Grey Jun 1st 2006

Tabuler, I shouldn't have attached phychology in general. And I feel sort of emberrassed that I couldn't remember Sigmund Freud's name. "Sigfried" I supose I combined the two names. Any time I hear about phychology, I almost always hear Sigmund Freud, and it just sort of drives me insane. And MissKaye, I do think that this topic is extremely amusing:)

Posted by pevesrox Jun 1st 2006

of course - blame potter, because it is the only movie where any act of female violence has ever occured. dude, get a grip, the real cause in my oppinion are: 1) stress 2) some think they can get away with it because they are girls 3) some grew up bad 4) lack of productive out puts 5) some girls are just plain dumb

Posted by DracoRocks Jun 1st 2006

LOL!!!!! Why do some people hate Harry Potter so much? They try to blame everything on him. How could Hermione cause violance? Just because after she punched Draco (which was very mean) and said "that felt good" dosent mean that she said it in the book. So tenchnecly the script writer for the movie should be blamed. P.S Draco is the BEST!!!

Posted by Twiggie Jun 1st 2006

How come know one has heard of this "prominent US psychologist"? I mean, my psychologist doesn't like Harry Potter, but that's probably because that is why I go to the psychologist anyway. Those are some CRAZY side effects of Harry Potter. I myself suffer from postPotter depression, but then again that's why I'm here. It was suggested by my psychologist to help me not go COMPLETELY nuts.

Posted by MissKaye Jun 1st 2006

HAHAHAHAHAHA that was really funny (Twiggie's comment)

Posted by Neetu120 Jun 1st 2006

I failed my Biology test. Now lets blame it on Harry Potter. =P

Posted by lunaluvgood14322 Jun 1st 2006

WHAT!?!?!?! this is the stupidest thing on the planet! its VIDEO GAMES (not the HP ones of course) like HALO and CALL OF DUTY that make girls violent. Harry Haters (self explanetory) just want to publicize that Harry Potter is bad in every little way that they can!

Posted by Jonesy38 Jun 2nd 2006

How freakin stupid! Hermoine is not violent! i think she is a great role model for girls because she shows girls that it is okay to be intelligent and opionated. i am appalled! is that guy living in the stone age or what? it's like feminism never happened! what a sexist pig! stereotyping girls as complacive, timid, creatures, who have suddenly broken the mold to become violent and unnessicarily aggressive... from what, three or four examples, it makes me sick! did he ever pause to think that maybe those girls are just psycotic or mislead? (oops, i guess in my spout of unnessicary aggession i forgot that harry potter is the root of all evil and the cause of all of the problems with our society today...sorrry! my bad)

Posted by Susie Jun 2nd 2006

I am a girl and I read Harry Potter. The only thing Harry-Potter related that makes me feel violent is reading stupid articles like these...it makes me wanna slap this dumb psychologist! Shame on you for blaming a book for such bad things. lol nicely put to whover's comment said "*chucks pickaxe at psychologist*" I totally agree with whoever said that :D

Posted by MissKaye Jun 2nd 2006

Haha wow ppl are still commenting on this?

Posted by Ysibli Jun 3rd 2006

books/movies/any other media dont cause children and teens to become violent. Its parents who dont guide their children and teach them whats wrong and right and how to think about their actions before they act that causes violence If parents nowdays would take the time to nurture their children instead of just ploping them in front of the B**B tube or nameless other distractions we wouldnt have to worry as much about violent and de-sensatized children.

Posted by gryffingirl99 Jun 3rd 2006

yes... we are still commenting this because it is a big issue. i think that this psycologist is insane. note that the psycologist is a guy, has no idea what makes girls angry and appearently hasnt even read the book that hes insulting....its pathetic.. oh yes and i agree with you ysibli.~=)

Hello US Psychologist: Stop blaming Harry Potter for everything that goes wrong in the world Sincerely, Sensible People

Posted by Rivendell Jun 4th 2006

700th comment. I really feel like hitting someone right now. Maybe I shouldn't have reread Prisoner of Azkaban last night - I had this strong desire to attack my pillows. Unfortunately it didn't have the required effect. Too sad. Now I'll have to go out and hit a group of innocent people because I need to get rid of my anger in some way... and because Hermione has made me violent, of course *evilgrin* Aah, I'd really like this psychologist thingy to turn up on a Harry Potter Fan Site.
