JKR: Some people will 'absolutely loathe' Book 7
JKR: Some people will 'absolutely loathe' Book 7 ITV is set to broadcast a documentary on JK Rowling this winter called "A Year in the Life...JK Rowling," and some excerpts from the special have been released.
The author JK Rowling is seen in a forthcoming TV documentary looking over the just-finished version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on her laptop. She declares: "Yeah, think I've finished."

As an off-camera film-maker offers his congratulations, Rowling, 41, says: "Thank you...yeah, you don't know, it might be rubbish. Some people will loathe it, they will absolutely loathe it. For some people to love it, other people must loathe it. That's just in the nature of the plot."

She adds, "I'm actually really, really happy with it", before bowing her head on the keyboard to exclaim: "Oh my God!"
Ciaran's opinion: When she says readers could potentially loathe the book, it would be because of deaths. And I don't think Jo believes killing off any character(s) other than Harry would spark hate among fans, which could mean... (Consider that she's never said this about a previous book even though very beloved characters have died.)

Emerson's opinion: This could be interpreted to mean anything. I still don't believe Harry will die.

Harry won't die!!!! - I agree with Emerson. It will be so sad, when I've finished reading DH! - I remember, when I first finished reading OotP.. it was horrible. ANd now there won't even be one to wait for! (Sorry for off topic) I think that no matter what it ends with, everyone will like it. They might have preferred or wished it to end in another way, but they will be happy :D - That includes me too, of course :D

I always get depressed when I finish reading a good book, specially series...for example...His Dark Materials... I cried...and I'm not even a dark materials fan!!!! IMAGINE HOW ILL BE WITH DH!!! really, my life will be over! jk jk but no, I'll certainly be really really REALLY sad! post-potter depression...I can feel it already..,.

xxxstinacakess, I do not take very kindly to being called a 'narrow-minded idiot' just because I'd hate an ending where Harry gets killed. Granted that it's Jo's story to write but it's MY choice to reread or like it. I love what Jo's given us so far but that doesn't mean that I have to love the last one too. Life is full of trials and I usually look forward to literature as an escape into an imaginative land where I'm emotionally safe - is that too much to ask? Does that make me 'a narrow-minded idiot'? I don't think so. I've always read for pleasure and having somebody I've come to love just die is not my idea of being entertained.

Posted by Sir_Cadogan Jul 13th 2007

It is very possible that many people will loathe this final book. However, since these books seem to have a bit of a moral throughout and continually stress the importance of choices, wouldn't it be fitting that a main character make a choice to sacrifice themself for the good of others? As someone said "Anything worthwhile is worth sacrificing for".

hmm i won't hate it. i'll luv it for sure...i don't know if harry will die though. i don't think....hm. i keep changing my mind so i am totoally not sure, that's one of things i am dying to find out! that and if snape is evil or good, though i think he is good. also, i am anticipating the epilogue, where verything will be revealed.

Yeah Emerson! Oh, and Emerson, it's Harry/Luna now! MUhahahaha! Thanks OOTP movie for changing my views!

i'm really thinking harry and a lot of other are gonna die because of this and the bloodbath comment.

Posted by maki Jul 13th 2007

I will cry even if nobody dies (which is not going to happen) :'(

Harry won't die.

srose, when jo said it would be a bloodbath she was joking, and just making a point of saying that more than 2 people will die. anyhoo, i know i will absolutely LOVE this book! nothing, no matter how 'bad' it is, will change that. and if harry dies, i'm not going to send hate mail, even if i will cry. a lot. he will die if he does, and it'll be sad, but i know jo will have a great story cooked up for us. it may seem a little weird, but i kind of enjoy it when something sad happens in a story. it makes it more meaningful, and the story kind of sticks in my mind. i cried for hours after book 6 (my favorite so far), and i'm definitely going to cry more in book 7. i think he might die though, i was definitely on the 'harry will live' wagon until some recent quotes and stuff...now i'm leaning a little more towards the 'he will die' side. i don't know though, i just can't make up my mind! but whatever happens, i know this book will rock. go jo!

Harry is not going to die, here are the reasons why! 1. Harry has too much love in him to die. Voldemort's one weakness besides death is love. 2. The cover art for the US Book 7 has a gold background. Harry's on the cover. Isn't gold a color that symbolizes victory? And Harry's surrounded by gold. So Harry will survive that battle. 3. Why in JK's right mind would she want to kill her most beloved character?! 4. Voldemort had trouble possesing Harry in the OoTP book. If he can't control Harry (or kill him with AK for that matter) how can he kill him? 5. Harry's survived 4 encounters with Voldy so far. If Voldy couldn't kill him then, how could he kill him now? 6. Um, Voldy's made horcruxes. Harry has destroyed the diary and Dumbledore has destroyed the ring. Harry's seen the locket, and Voldy himself is a horcrux. Harry's scar is NOT A HORCRUX, so having to destroy the locket, Nagini, and something belonging to the four founders aside from Slytherin. Once they are destroyed (which hopefully will be easy for our hero) Harry will have no problem defeating the dark lord. 7. Neville is part of the prophecy, too! Maybe Neville will sacrifice himself for his friend. Neville could have a scar, somewhere underneath his clothes, perhaps. How his parents (and Harry's, for that matter) thrice defied Voldy is still to be revealed. Now my rant is over.

For anyone who doubts what I said on the previous page about HP being Christian, check out this new editorial I just found, the second or third down on the editorials page: "Is Harry Potter the Son of God?" I haven't had time to read through it all yet, but whoever posted it (and no, it was not me) is a genius.

I think it's all rubbish that people will LOATHE the books because of deaths. We all knew there'd be deaths before we knew the title. I think all the people who thought Snape was good/ambiguous are going to be upset. Because no, it isn't that I think the world is split morally and ethically (Snape isn't as bad as Voldemort)- but that Dumbledore is not perfect, that he can't be right about everything, and that just this once, Harry has to be proven right. I think (much as Dumbledore knows himself he's rather ingenius) that Harry is a perceptive person, and that Ron (RON too!) is, as even JKR has written, "reasonable." That is, more so than we ever give him credit for. Look at the stats, Dumb. is never far off from his mark when he decides to do something (with keeping the prophecy from Harry- it was a good thing as well as an ill-fated choice)- but if Snape was his own agent, it'd just be lame; we all thought Snape was the bad guy in book 1, and then everything (almost) pointed to him being good just with a Death Eater background, and then in Spinner's End we were like, instinctiually "NOT GOOD". And then good again? How? Good seems impossible to me. You can't have any remnants of good left after being a double agent for that long, no matter you're supposedly with the Order still, doing their dirty work. Besides that chapter, does anyone ever think about how Harry notices the gentle reverence in Snape's tone as he nearly praises the Dark Arts? There's really no excuse for that honestly. And then, Hermione we all know has shown she's capable of being wrong in the past. She had to be wrong about this, she was right in OotP about Sirius being a dream and it'd simply be insulting if Harry was wrong again. Like Harry doesn't have a sucky enough time as it is. I understand the ambiguity thing, but at this point it is irrelevant as Snape's freaking name sounds awful and slimy (what does it sound like?), and sure he's not completely down the drain but you can still ...

Posted by cellopower Jul 13th 2007

I'm a bit torn on this one.. but if Harry dies, people, y'all are going to just have to live with it. I admit, I'll be disappointed, but really. And (changing the subject here) on the Scholastic polls (who will live and who will die), almost everyone thought Harry was going to live. Then about 80% thought Voldemort was going to live, too. Um.. did you even READ book 5?? Either Harry or Voldie's gonna die. And it's looking like it's going to be Harry, although we can't tell that for sure just from this one story.

Posted by grednforge Jul 13th 2007

oh, j.k. i don't think any true harry potter fan could ever hate any of your books. Haha- oh emerson...

Posted by Ibeadear Jul 13th 2007

The thing is (btw I apologize for my rant above- I was possessed) as many have already sort of pointed out- Harry's ahead of the game. He's younger and fresher for one thing; for another, like three parts of him are already gone. Big chunks. Everything points to Voldemort dying. He's already died, all of him, in so many ways- he can't cheat death any longer. I just really doubt that Harry will have to do much to make him die, expend as much energy on him as he has in the past, because the more Harry turns into a man, the more a person he becomes, whereas Vold. is doing just the opposite. He isn't growing anymore if you will. He may be powerful, but when you break it down, he's just a twisted old man who was once a hungry, rather hot, unspeakably cold young piece of brilliance- surrounded by "Death Eaters" who are really becoming better wizards than him. Besides, much of his power is fueled by anger, which, as Lance Armstrong said, isn't much of a fuel after a while. Love is too enduring. Although I hate that bit when Harry goes "you're wrong, love is better" when he's lying on the sand in the Ministry and Vold. is trying to attack his mind in the OotP movie (the scary part was better, it didn't make me cringe)... He IS right. Harry just gets stronger and stronger, no matter he doesn't have the innocence he had at the age of 1.

Posted by ObsessiveForever Jul 13th 2007

Well no matter who dies I can't hate the book. I didn't hate the 5th book, and Sirius is my absolute favorite. I may not be happy, but the book is bound to be fantastic. The onyl reason I loath the book is because one week from now this'll all be over.

Posted by njg1287 Jul 13th 2007

Wow, what a surprise! Another News Story that is trying to indicate Harry's death. It seems like there is a new one everyday. Personally, I believe that even if Harry did not die there would be tons of people who would hate the book. There are probably going to be a multitude of characters that fans like that are going to die in the last book not just one like in the last two. Not only that, if Harry did not die it might upset fans who want him to sacrafice himself. Either way some people are not going to be happy.

Posted by MrsGrint Jul 13th 2007

i most definitely agree w/ emerson :))

Posted by snapeisgoodtrustme Jul 13th 2007

HES NOT DYING.......JO'S JUST SAYING THIS BECAUSE IN PAST BOOKS, IF PPL DIDNT LIKE THEM, SHE WOULD HAVE ANOTHER BOOK TO FOLLOW IT UP AND MAYBE THAT WOULD HAVE THEM LIKE THE BOOK BETTER. SHE CANT DO THIS WITH THIS ONE 7 DAYS.....CHERISH THE MOMENTS HP FANS

Posted by Ibeadear Jul 13th 2007

Why do they want him to sacrifice himself? He's just a kid, he isn't "just too perfect in a way" as that one dude posted earlier (he/she hated book 5, and only "likes" Harry so won't be very disappointed if he dies in this one). He's more flawed than Ron and Hermione in some ways. If you aren't more distraught if Harry died than with any other character, personally, I have a problem with that. We know more about Harry than anyone else put together, we've lived in his mind for pages and pages. Harry is very understandable but very complex. He's very contradictory and despite the 'saving people thing'- unpredictable. I love him to death! He's way too strong to die, I've said it before, I'll say it again. What if it was just because we never see Hogwarts again that Jo said that? Or at least partially. I hope no one else has suggested that lol, whatever.

Posted by Clean0002 Jul 13th 2007

He is one arguement imo to support that the trio will survive. They are like a triangle, they are strong as long as they have each other, they are a complete unit and there is evidence to support this. I don't think it is coincidence that JKR made each of their wands out of one of the wand cores. Harry's is a phoenix feather, Ron't is unicorn hair, and Hermione's is a Dragon's heartstring which represents each has what the other lacks. Harry is also the hand of the group, Ron is the heart, and Hermione is the mind which again shows each needs the other two. Now if she kills one of the three the triangle is broken and a piece is missing that can't be replaced. The two that survive if one dies are now left incomplete and they will no longer be whole. Anyway, that is a theory I have come up with in regards to the trio. I don't know if it is right at all but there is evidence to support it. I am still afraid one of the trio will die, especially Ron or Hermione, but my theory gives me hope that the trio will survive.

Posted by AcidPops33 Jul 13th 2007

I agree with Emerson. The prophecy states that "nether can live while the other survies". Dumbledore says that in the end, one of them will have to kill the other. If Harry dies, that means Voldemort survies, which is completely against the message of the books; that good must conquer evil. I believe you're sorely mistaken if you think that JKR is going to end her 7 books with Voldemort winning and taking over the world. Not exactly a lovely moral.

Posted by greenphoenix Jul 13th 2007

If either Ron or Hermione dies, not only will I loathe Deathly Hallows, I will loathe the whole series.

Posted by Junigatsu Jul 13th 2007

I couldn't hate Jo, no matter what happens. I don't want Harry to die, but if that's how Jo writes it, then I'll accept it. I personally think he deserves to live a full, happy life (preferrably with Ginny!) after all of the torment and hard times he's been through. It may not happen that way, but whatever Jo writes, I'll cry my tears and try to move on.

Posted by j4fun Jul 13th 2007

HARRY ABSOLUTELY CANNOT DIE!!! He's led a crappy live for almost all of his seventeen years. Surely, she cannot be that cruel!! Please Jo, don't kill him!! Anybody but him !!

Posted by dobbyroxmysox Jul 13th 2007

*She declares: "Yeah, think I've finished."* ...THINKS she finished!!!!!! lol i dont care what happens im reay to accept anything that jo has written. I CANT WAIT UNTIL NEXT SATURDAY!!!!!! =D but im gonna go through serious deppression after the end of the book....oh also i think if you reallly like the series you wouldnt hate the books because of who died.

Posted by pinkigirldancing Jul 13th 2007

I'm in the US and Sci Fi Channel shows the BBC Show DR WHO. IN the episode "THe Shakespear Code" The Dr mentions "wait till you read book 7, I cried like a baby." when his companion talks about witches and stuff like Harry Potter! Then at the end they use expelliarmus to take some aliens away! HAHAHA! EVERYONE even time lords LOVE HP!!!!!!

Posted by hpaddict13 Jul 13th 2007

I am agreeing with Emerson, I never thought Harry would die, because for some reason I just cant imagine the series ending without Harry. "Neither can live while the other survives." I dont think she would kill off harry and voldy live on. It's like saying the whole magical world goes to ruins. Then again, I've thought she could have both die. You never know, I just think (and hope) she doesnt kill Harry. I think she will have killed alot of people who are very close and important to harry, which will set off the emotion that harry is alone and all the readers; or atleast i do, feel how harry feels while reading, and I think that is what she is meens by loathing the book. I think it will be very sad, dark, interesting, and have alot of action and emotion. I cannot WAIT until it comes out, and i know however it ends up, i will love it, and i will continue re-reading the books over and over again, learning something new each time. However, I will not have too much to look forward to after this final book :[. which is kind of depressing if you think about it... no more harry potter... Jo is one amazing author.

Posted by felixfelicis888 Jul 13th 2007

OH NO I HATE NEWS LIKE THIS... MAKES ME QUESTION THINGS. OH JKR PLEASE YOU BETTER NOT LET ANYONE FROM THE TRIO DIE. I LOVE THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!

Posted by peckofowls Jul 13th 2007

I really won't hate Jo even if Harry does die... but that might happen. Not that I want him to die... I mean, it would be horrible if it does happen... personally, I don't mind if Voldemort dies...

Posted by EmeraldWolfEyes Jul 13th 2007

Could she have just meant that some people will loath it because they loath the book itself and not who dies in it? I mean... I'm not sure that there's any book that isn't loathed by atleast some percentage of the people who read it. And there are plenty of people who hate Harry Potter. It's sad, but it's true. I mean, Laura Mallory hates the books. People like her will loath this seventh edition. I don't know if I'm totally off the track here, but isn't it possible that J.K. Rowling wasn't giving any hints to the deaths in this book at all?

Posted by Kenzi Jul 13th 2007

GO EMERSON! I totally agree with you *fangirls*

Posted by Devikosas Jul 13th 2007

Personally, as soon as I read that J.K. thought people would "loathe" the books, I got a wicked grin spreading across my face. If somebody else is going to loathe it, I'm going to adore it. Personally, I really do hope Harry dies. Not because I don't love dear ol' Harry, of course I do! But can you imagine what a great finish it would be to the series? How does this sound. Either Harry valiantly dies to save his friends and future wizarding generation by defeating Voldemort, and sealing his name forever as the hero of the wizarding world, or...Harry wins, and grows up to get a comfortable, cushy job. Honestly. Not very exciting. Whatever J.K. comes up with, I shall love. She is a brilliant author with an even more brilliant mind. I have no doubt her last installment of Harry Potter, whether sad or happy, will please millions. And of course, me, who'll be screaming with glee upon receiving said book.

Posted by PotterLove06 Jul 13th 2007

I want to believe Emerson, but there's this tiny bit of me that thinks JK is going to kill Harry off. JO please PLEASE don't kill Harry, he is my best friend. i've never formed a bond between a book character before! You've killed Cedric, and then (SNIFF) Sirius, and even Dumbledore! Please don't kill Harry, please don't kill Harry, please don't I will drown the world with my tears!

Posted by PotterLove06 Jul 13th 2007

Even though the prophecy says, "Neither can live while the other survives" that doesn't necessarily mean that Harry will live while Voldy dies or vice versa. They could both die.

Posted by Devikosas Jul 13th 2007

And, this may be a slight annoyance...but to those of you who believe J.K. simply couldn't bear to kill Harry, (this includes you, Emerson) I'm going to use one word. DELUSIONAL. Har har har. Thank you Emerson for forcing that word into my subconscious from the J.K. interview. (:

Posted by dloge Jul 13th 2007

So much hype-I just can't fathom that Jo would so easly kill off Harry to me that would be the easiest thing to do and most predictable. I think like Emerson-Harry lives!! Harry's life has simply sucked! Beyond his wonderful friends, he has endured hell and back through 6 books already and so have us readers. It almost makes me sick to my stomach thinking that one week and a few hours we will have the answers in our hands. I just can't imagine any ending other than Harry living a long life with Ginny...hopeful to the end! If not then I will be shaking my head for a long time!!!

Posted by felixfelicis888 Jul 13th 2007

jk i hope you're just playin'!!!!! OMG BUT DON'T THINK RON OR HERMIONE WILL DIE (yay!!!!!!) CUZ SHE SAID THAT EVENTUALLY THEY WOULD GET TOGETHER. I DOUBT THEY WOULD CALL IT "GOING OUT" IF THEIR HELPING HARRY DEFEAT VOLDY. I MEAN, IT WOULD NOT A VERY GOOD DATE, WOULD IT? AND HARRY WON'T DIE. I WOULD CRY IF HE DID. I DON'T THINK I'VE FELT SO MUCH EMOTIONS AT ONCE: HAPPY,SAD,ANXIOUS,AFRAID, EXCITED... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! !!!!!!
