The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows? With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.

According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.

We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.

-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.

"News?", asked the taller of the two.

"The best," replied Snape.'

Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

Enlightening has been amazing and the podcasting workshop was the best ever. I can't wait to just read DH and find out what will happen, but yet again it will be so sad that it's over.

Posted by christinedaae Jul 14th 2007

I'm tearing myself apart on whether I should highlight it or not... D:

Posted by DedalusDiggle Jul 14th 2007

I have virtually no willpower. If MuggleNet posts access to spoilers, I will read them. Curse you (but, uh, not with an Unforgivable)! Of course, the authenticity is at issue, and even if this IS the opening, it doesn't give away anything. A man duplicitous throughout 6 books could certaintly be duplicitous beyond the first few lines of the seventh. Is it time for DH yet?

Posted by coleygirl Jul 14th 2007

mmmm..... thats pretty interesting, if it is really from the book.

Posted by lady_roonilwazlib Jul 14th 2007

I couldn't keep myself from reading it... It seems so unlikely that this is real but it still got me super excited! Omg... I don't know what to say, all I know it that I'm going to have an absolute heartattack when the book is actually in my hands... aagh! :)

Posted by bandnerd09 Jul 14th 2007

omg... i still can't believe its almost over. 6 DAYS!!!!

Posted by american_allie Jul 14th 2007

wow... didn't give much away... I wonder if its real... interesting very interesting as olivander would say!

Posted by DracosGirl17 Jul 14th 2007

I want to read, but I'm not going to. I don't want ANYTHING to spoil my surprise.

Posted by hpgirl_91 Jul 14th 2007

i can't decide! should I read it? ugh indecisiveness.

Posted by nikkkie Jul 14th 2007

OMG HIGHLIGHTING THAT MADE ME LIKE WANT THE BOOK TO COME OUT SO MUCH FASTER!

Posted by McBrian Jul 14th 2007

yup, thats the beginning, iknow it

Posted by hallowsaint Jul 14th 2007

there's nothing much on there and the taller guy is Voldemort........I promise this will not spoil anything and it's probably not real

Posted by hpl123 Jul 14th 2007

soooo excitingggg =]

Posted by snapeisemo Jul 14th 2007

Ahhh ohmygawd ohmygawd ohmygawd >.< I can't wait seven more days. All I've been thinking about is Harry Potter constantly. I'm so happy it starts out with Snape :333

Posted by halfpack Jul 14th 2007

OMFG TOP 3859385904385093485? i t sounds fake to me; jk's chapter titles haven't been so long yet- and it just sounds a little fishy to me anyway. and for the first chapter, it's a little uncharacteristic of jk to start the first line with "the two men..." with no introduction to them beforehand, even if we already know snape.

Posted by anvilsized Jul 14th 2007

I think its fake because I dont think that the character speaking in the last line would say those words. It seems out of character for him. Plus thats a pretty weak opening sentence.

Posted by Daisy_Potter Jul 14th 2007

top 50!! omg i cant believe i read it!!!! but there's not too much...im guessing Snape's referring to the thing that happened at the end of HBP!! =O

Posted by lovexlaugh_potter Jul 14th 2007

fakeeeeeeeeee. At first I had a SPAZ. I was like. O-M-F-G. But yeah. I reeeeeally doubt that's the real thing, cause I think Jo wouldn't start with sentences like that. With like. 3 Words in it. So yeah, I think it's fake !

Posted by jklatham Jul 14th 2007

Tall... Tall.... Who we know thats tall? Well Dumbledore is... But i couldn't be him... His DEAD!!! Arg!! Give me the book!!!

Posted by Nekoknight Jul 14th 2007

OMFG NO WAIIII!!! -spazzes-

Posted by Capernaum Jul 14th 2007

I don't think it is real. Even those few little lines it just seems to me not to be JK Rowling's writing style. I don't think it seems like something she would write anyway. I could be wrong though.

Posted by ChocolateEyedWitch Jul 14th 2007

OH MY GOD! Bu-bu-but...Snape ...is...*runs away. can't read anymore.*

Posted by bringmethehorizon Jul 14th 2007

You guys are so in denial I swear. You could have the book right in front of you and be like oh no this is no her writing style its so fake... -_-

Posted by kmagowan Jul 14th 2007

this isnt real! the title isnt anything jk would ever write! interesting all the same though...

Posted by autumnwramth Jul 14th 2007

Snape is most likely going to say that He killed dumbledore. And the "the taller one of the two" is most likely Voldemort.

Posted by i_have_spoken13 Jul 14th 2007

That isn't even Jo's writing style!!! If she ever said that someone waited a 'second' I would have noticed. She would have said that they waited a 'moment.' 'Second,' in that context is a very American usage of that word. So, I can't possibly believe that this is a true exerpt of the book.

Posted by coleygirl Jul 14th 2007

Yeah i agree- it sounds really fake. I dont think Jo would start a book so bluntly.

Posted by ForeverFan Jul 14th 2007

Interesting chapter title... It's funny that the book is beginning with Snape. I wonder when his allegiances will be clear!? ugh! I can't wait 'til Friday!!!
