The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows? With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.

According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.

We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.

-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.

"News?", asked the taller of the two.

"The best," replied Snape.'
<--

Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

@Siriusfan Was the last word scar or not? Because Jo recently said that "scar" is near the end, but not the last word. So, if it is the last word, it's fake.

EEEEKKK, I'm so excited =D

If you go back and look at the "scans" you can see some MAJOR hints that they are TOTALLY AND UTTERLY FAKE. You will notice on these so called "scans" that the first page labeled "Contents" lists NINE titles and the following pages list TEN. This does not follow the patteren of the rest of the books. ALL of the previous books have listed EIGHT titles on the first page and NINE on all of the following. You will also notice that on the last "scan" it shows the egde of the following page, which appears to be the first chapter. This also does not follow the patteren of the rest of the books. ALL of the previous books have a final title page with a checkered background before the first page of the first chapter. Also if we were to assume that for some reason the "final title page" has been removed before the beginning of chapter one, it is still missing the signature enlarged first letter that appears on EVERY SINGLE chapter beginning...........Here is the link for the "Chapter Scans". BEWARE this page claims to have MAJOR SPOILERS, although I'm positive that they are fakes but if you really wish to see them go ahead.... I don't know, this doesn't sound like Jo's writing for some odd reason, i just can't put my finger on it

Posted by LittleOddball Jul 15th 2007

If it is real ...funny how the last two books start with Snape ...(fangirl squeeee for the ugly git)

Posted by jthrashWVU Jul 15th 2007

Look at the template of what appears to be Sorcerer's Stone holding the book open. THen look at the red part of what appears to be the front of the back cover. Looks VERY doctored to me. Probably photoshopped. Not to mention the material in the epilogue is boring as hell. It explains nothing.

Posted by klutzkween Jul 15th 2007

and so the potential spoilers, and leakages begin.... ahhh, yes, the hype that comes with a new HP book, nothing quite like it, is there?

Posted by Hp4booklover Jul 15th 2007

OMG SNAPE IM GING CRAZY I CANT BELIEVE THAT I JUST GOT TO READ THAT!!!!!!!!!!!! YAYAYAYAYAY

Posted by Jerry Jul 15th 2007

Well, the wording and linguistic styling sounds like Jo to me, but even if this is an excerpt from a manuscript then there is no guarantee that it's still like that in the actual finished product. Manuscripts by their very nature are edited and changed, so a 2006 manuscript may bear little relation to the 2007 book.

Posted by hpfan112 Jul 15th 2007

I couldn’t stop myself!!! When I saw it I said to myself “No I am not going to read it†and I left mugglenet…. After 5 minutes I came back and read it…!!! 6 DAYS LEFT!!!!!

Posted by Radishes_for_earrings Jul 15th 2007

This is so not authentic! It doesnt sound like Jo at all! the chapter name sounds v fake. I'm ashamed i read it though, not self control! I hope there are no real spoilers.

Posted by melibabineau Jul 15th 2007

....there's not even a week left...I'm kind of anxious now...I want the book so bad, but...it's the last one...that's sad...but at the same time so exciting...

Posted by AcidPops33 Jul 15th 2007

That's so fake. It doesn't sound like JKR at all. I'm so excited though; only 5 more days and 15 more hours!!!!!!!!!

Posted by harry_victoria Jul 15th 2007

Hmm... it seems like a good writing style, just not Jo's. I can see the chapter title being Jo's, just not the writing. It is SO not her style. Just hold on guys, only five more days. Remember to breathe deeply and drink plenty of water. PS- Bring earplugs if you're going to a release party, some idiot might spoil the ending. -harry_victori a

Posted by darkfog Jul 15th 2007

it isnt really giving away much... i wonder if its really the begining of the book reading it made me more and more exciting for the book... i cant wait

Posted by christianaeg Jul 15th 2007

Hmm... I just don't think it sounds enough like her! at least i hope not. i want it to start with harry's story!

Posted by muggleatuniv Jul 15th 2007

This is ridiculous. Why can't anyone publish a book without leaks? As a person who's getting DH at the midnight release, I have to say that I am NOT going to read this. I appreciate the whole spoiler warning and prevention thing, but this whole thing is simply crazy. Leaks such as this will ruin books and the pleasure the reader has in them. Whether or not this is the actual beginning to DH does not matter; the end result still applies.

Posted by HorcruxSearcher Jul 15th 2007

It's the Guardian its real! I don't really know how to explain to people in the US how respected the paper is (I know I would be sceptical if some American paper I've never heard of printed an extract from DH, and I'd think it was fake). I suppose it would be like the New York Times posting an extract from the book (and I don't think they'd post a fake). As I mentioned in a previous post my cousin works/writes for the guardian (the education supplement so nothing to do with this) and I phoned her 10 mins ago to see if she could try and speak to some people to see if it was real or not, she laughed and said she wouldn't bother anyone at work because they wouldn't print anything that wasn't real (they'd get into a lot of trouble and people would lose jobs). Also she said that she knows they got a 5min preview tape for the ITV documentary last Thursday, so they've probably had this info since then. When I said that everyone on the net seems to think its fake she told me to chill and that in a week they'd know it was real.

Posted by lovexlaugh_potter Jul 15th 2007

I agree, it doesn't sound like her writing style at all. I hate leaks. But it's bound to happen sometimes, cause it happened to the other books. 5 days though... The thing is, would fans be disappointed if it was the real thing?

Posted by Jadore_Bella Jul 15th 2007

NO NO NO I READ THE LAST WORD AND NOW I ACTUALLY FEEL SICK! God why am I so bad? I am ashamed of myself.

Posted by chommy Jul 15th 2007

I wonder what it means ...

Posted by abhijitdande Jul 15th 2007

MUGGLENET SUCKS LIKE HELL FOR POSTING THIS....AND ALLOWING PEOPLE TO POST SPOILER LINKS IN THE COMMENTARY BOARD

Posted by voldiekilledthedodos Jul 15th 2007

I....MUST...........NOT.. ..........READ

Posted by lynsea Jul 15th 2007

its not even spelled correctly

Posted by to_the_stage93 Jul 15th 2007

It could've been from the first manuscript, which may now very well be EDITED and CHANGED, meaning that it's not going to appear. And, even if it does appear, it's only the first couple lines of the first chapter. NOT the last page of the last chapter or really quite spoiling at all. By this time in other books excerpts have been released, and it wasn't such a tragedy. To be honest, knowing excerpts before hand don't ruin it for me,if I knew what character was going to die or whateer- yeah, that might ruin it for me, but seven lines that aren't confirmed as true, may be from an earlier manuscript and may not even appear in the version we're all getting on friday night, don't reveal any REALLY important information are seriously not going to spoil it for me.....

Posted by crumple_horned_snorkack22 Jul 15th 2007

Wow. I was so excited when I first saw that, but the Guardian has said so many untrue things in the past, so I'm not believing this one. Also, it just doesn't seem like something from Harry Potter, more like something from a fanfic.

Posted by PHOEBEANN Jul 15th 2007

EVEN IF IT IS TRUE, WHICH I HIGHLY DOUBT, IT BASICALLY TELLS NOTHING. SNAPE COULD STILL BE LYING TO KEEP HIS COVER TO BOTH SIDES.

Posted by Slorf Jul 15th 2007

There's no spoiler about reading the first 5 lines of the book 5 days before it's released. It just builds excitement; it's not the same as knowing all the chapter titles and who is going to die and stuff...

Posted by oofa Jul 15th 2007

That is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fake

Posted by lovexlaugh_potter Jul 15th 2007

abhijitdande; it's your fault for clicking the links and spoiling yourself. Don't blame the site cause you couldn't keep your hands to your self and clicked every freaking spoiler link.

*Sitting in a puddle of wee*

Posted by PrezLeefun Jul 15th 2007

I struggled for about 2 seconds over whether or not I would read this. I dont know. I am not sure it is fake. Its easy enough to remember to see if it is true come late friday night. I seems a bit fast for the opening. Jo (assuming this is Jo) was a bit more desciptive of the surroundings in the opening chapters. I dont think she ever got right into dialouge in HBP. Dialouge was like a treat we had to be patient for in the last book (Not that it took too long to get to it). This just seems fast.

Posted by toast10 less than a minute ago *Sitting in a puddle of wee* ROFL !!!!!

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers Jul 15th 2007

I tried not to read it, but it doesnt really spoil anything, so whatever!

Posted by toast10 Jul 15th 2007

Bob_Oggdon wot dos ROFL mean?

Posted by lovexlaugh_potter Jul 15th 2007

...when did the except of hbp come out again? -sits in pudding-

Posted by vitoaf27 Jul 15th 2007

well, if it is the real thing, the editor didnt do a good job. she spelled recognizing wrong.

Posted by Bob_Oggdon Jul 15th 2007

ROFL !!!!! Roll Around The Floor Laffing

Posted by Kamion Jul 15th 2007

Printed manuscript? at Oktober 23? When was it that Jo wrote her finishing scribble on the statue in the hotel? I thought it was at a later daye, but I could be mistaken. All together I think Oktober 23 is a bit early to have the manuscript printed at all. But as opening lines they remind me a bit at the encounter of Dumbledore and McGonagall in " The Boy Who Lived " I would like to see that first chapter of the first book counterweighted at the start of the last book. Spoiler?? I doesn't spoil anything for me; A COMPLETE BODYCOUNT THAT WOULD SPOIL EVERYTHING, not some vague lines.

Posted by 62442 Jul 15th 2007

dosent really seam like its real, maybe it is just because it is so short, but it sounds a bit like a fafic to me.

Posted by toast10 Jul 15th 2007

thanx i dnt speak this american lingo jus Brithish lingo

Posted by timahood32 Jul 15th 2007

Nothing really big

Posted by HorcruxSearcher Jul 15th 2007

we spell recognizing with an S in the UK so it's not a spelling mistake

Posted by lovexlaugh_potter Jul 15th 2007

I think that's the UK way of spelling recognizing. What Kamion said, didn't she finish HBP in Jan. ? The documentary is a good excuse though. Grr. I still think it's fake. Jo would more like, put a puzzle up on her site and have us figure it out I think.

Posted by rggr9728 Jul 15th 2007

i doubt that is real, but even if it isnt, i still CANT WAIT for the book!!! :)

Posted by Bob_Oggdon Jul 15th 2007

Hey toast10 Im Aussie not American....

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jul 15th 2007

I will not read it! Even if it is probably fake. Movie spoilers were cool but not DH stuff...

Posted by dietcokegurl2321 Jul 15th 2007

this is fake. deffinitely.

Posted by lovexlaugh_potter Jul 15th 2007
