The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows? With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.

According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.

We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.

-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.

"News?", asked the taller of the two.

"The best," replied Snape.'
<--

Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

I read it ... because it's the Guardian, I think it might be true, because the Guardian is fairly reputable. It's a very interesting beginning, if it is.

Posted by christianaeg Jul 15th 2007

grrr I wanna start a no spoiler campaign.... But the passage sounds kinda fake...

wow, it's real funny how i can't get to some of these links.......... pretty funny, i don't believe this crap, and how could mugglenet let this go.....pretty bad if i may say so myself...

Posted by rosesarose Jul 15th 2007

I don't think it fits with her writing style at all. And I can't really imagine Snape saying "the best." The descriptions were too simple, it's not how she usually writes things, especially for the opening words of the book. I think it's a fake.

Posted by dumbledoreISdead Jul 15th 2007

the reason you cant get to the links is because you have to delete all the spaces between the words

Posted by Dianutza Jul 15th 2007

Of course I could not stop to read... but I decided to stay this weak with Mugglenet because I knew that you won`t post anything relate to spoilers, I knew I couldn`t helped myself so I didn`t want to be tempted. Why do you lay your ear on this unfonded spoilers ?

OH....MY.....GOD

Posted by Agnes Jul 15th 2007

Guys, this could mean anything. I seriously can't believe that anyone could have stolen the manuscript from J.K. to copy some pages because I believe that she guards it with her life, and it doesn't sound like her writing at all. It could be a joke, because because everybody is speculating and everything. Nah, this is fake. Only a couple of people know what's really going to happen. Omg, 5 days left.. I'm going to faint at 12 o'clock the 21st I'm sure xD!

Posted by ilovedan Jul 15th 2007

bro..... i cant deal...thats unreall.....5DAYSSSS LEFTT!!! cant wait anymore!!!!!!!!

Posted by BetZZZlovesHarry Jul 15th 2007

omg i wonder if this is true or not?? is the taller one Voldemort? idk for some reason i agree with some other people like coleygirl...i really dont think this is real

Posted by Eviegrl941 Jul 15th 2007

For my last post, do not type ":First" ":Next 2" or ":Final 2" and you have to get rid of the spaces. Those are 4 sites, in order, for the Epilouge.

Posted by xLoony_Luna Jul 15th 2007

Grrr....no I want to read it sososososososo much more!!!! (if its true)(i hope so) I CANNOT wait 'til FRIDAY!!!

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

when i read the eppie that girl posted, the numbers on the bottom looked in the 200's, idk, seems sooo fake, and i am not sure if jk writes quite like that........

Posted by Tonks1975 Jul 15th 2007

OMG I can't believe it. It brought Dumbledores death right back up to the surface like it just happened when Snape said that. I think I hate snape now. If it's true. I thought I couldn't get any more anxious for the book but now I think I might have to break into a book store to get it. LOL JUST KIDDING!! Even it is not true it is pretty cool to have some teasers while we wait.

Posted by G11nyW33zly Jul 15th 2007

I read it I am so weak! I can't believe I did that *smacks self accross face* now I have to hope it's not real... I can't really say it looks like her sort of writing

Posted by ginnypotter719 Jul 15th 2007

ehh. i dont think so....it doesnt sound very JKR-ish.

Posted by KG2118 Jul 15th 2007

That epilogue isn't real. The US edition of the books has 784 pages. The UK version, 608 pages. The end of that "epilogue" is labeled as page 759. Maybe the chapter art or whatever is real, but that epilogue is clearly photoshopped. Jeez, didn't even get the page numbers right...

Posted by ilovedan Jul 15th 2007

after reading some other comments.. i dont think this is true.. it doesnt sound like jk and i'm sure she does guard this with her life, so i'm sure none of it is leaking out.. well we just have to wait and find out!! 5 dayss!! i cant wait until i get my book at midnight!!!!!!!!!

Posted by xLoony_Luna Jul 15th 2007

I also think this is sounds fake. It's not Jo's style at all. The word choice is way off. I don't think she would start the LAST book of the whole series (*cries*) off like that - so bluntly. (I can't wait until friday!!!)

Posted by sms Jul 15th 2007

So much for a spoiler free website...

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

KG2118 i totally agree with u!!!!!!!! it just can't be real...but i know i won't read to the end when i get the book, i gave into my weakness now, and won't do it when i have the book!!!!!!! *hopefully it isn't real.....it just can't be*

Posted by lidietta Jul 15th 2007

yeah!!!!! really really fake, all of it!!!!!!!!

Posted by HorcruxSearcher Jul 15th 2007

Look if you live in the UK you would know it was real! The Guardian is highly respected and isn't stupid enough to post a fake extract. Anyway I now have proof that this is real. My cousin works for the Guardian (education section but she knows a lot of people) and I've been bugging her all day to check that it's 100% real. She initially refused (said the paper isn't stupid enough to lie, doesn't understand my HP obsession etc...). Anyway after me constantly bugging her all day she agreed to phone some people (just to shut me up) and they told her that: - 1. Certain members of the press were given 5 min previews of the ITV documentary (my cousin already knew this), 2. They had to get permission from ITV and Bloomsbury to print the article (Bloomsbury has a whole department which deals with anyone using anything Harry Potter related in a book, cartoon, TV show etc...) 3 The person who she spoke to said it was funny that they needed Bloomsbury’s permission as ITV had already had Bloomsbury’s approval on the preview contents. 4. Bloomsbury did tell the Guardian that they needed to state that the extract was taken from the documentary when JKR was still writing the novel (therefore we can assume that wording MAY have been changed. Finally if you still don't believe it is authentic email Bloomsbury who will confirm it. Also I don't think people should bash mugglenet for posting it as it is an APPROVED SPOILER!

Posted by Mpol Jul 15th 2007

It's FAKE guys. Epilogues don't do for four pages. And can you seriously think Jo would go down such a corny root? HECK NO! The page on there is not the finale one, that being 784. My theory (yes we're not getting theories even for the fake crap!) Schoolastic planted this, to distract us. There are obvious flaws to it, but attention to detail isn't what they were aiming for. I think they have done a great job to distract us. :D

Posted by potterprophet7 Jul 15th 2007

Whose the taller guy? Nice opening, i just hope its real.

Posted by KG2118 Jul 15th 2007

And people, please stop whining about spoiler-free sites or whatever. What the staff posted is hardly a spoiler, assuming it's real. A spoiler is something huge, this says basically that two men apparated and shared some news. I'm uber!excited for the book too but seriously, get a freaking grip. And if you're worried about the links in the comments, here's something...don't click on the link. Or better, don't read the comments. Jeez.

Posted by cfptwenty Jul 15th 2007

It sounds interesting though, i mean, maybe alot of this book will be Volde taking over now DD is out the way, cos to be honest, we haven't seen much in the way of his power or plan to rule the world... Ooo i cant wait, 6 days to go!

Posted by XSCANDELX Jul 15th 2007

Honestly, this doesn't sound too authentic to me... it just doesn't sound like Rowling, know what I mean? While I could see her starting the book off with Snape like this, it completely lacks to mystery her openings usually begin with. If she had written this, both men would have remained nameless until the end of the chapter at least; Snape's identity wouldn't have been revealed within the first few lines. And Snape's line sounds corny as well. Here's two more give aways from line one that says it's not authentic: "The two men" - the men have never been mentioned, therefore if Rowling had written this it would read "two men..." "...appeared out of nowhere..." - Come on, does that sound like Rowling? Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm quite sure this is completely fake. It doesn't sound a bit like Rowling, that's quite obvious.

Posted by Janet0520 Jul 15th 2007

To me it does not seem accurate. I may be totally wrong, but I do not trust anything unless it comes from JKR. I read it, becuase I have no willpower whatsoever, but I am still not sure. Who knows? I guess we'll find out in 5 days! (WOOT! WOOT!)

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

Having read this 'excerpt', I'm going to have to say that I do not believe that it is real, and for three reasons. One (this could go either way), I'm pretty sure that there should not be a colin after 'other's', and although everyone makes mistakes, that seems to be a pretty obvious one for such a seasoned author to make. Two (and this could also go either way), Severus has been one of the most highly debated over characters since the last book. I highly, highly doubt that she would reveal in the very first paragraph of the very first chapter that his loyalties lie with the dark side. Now, I say this could go either way for two reasons. First, maybe I'm misinterpreting it, and the guy he's with really isn't working for Voldemort. Who's to say for sure? That's what I picked up, however. Second, maybe I AM interpreting it correctly, but Severus will appear to be on the dark side for much of the book, but eventually reveal that he's actually working on the light side. Wishful thinking, perhaps? Third, the entire paragraph was very mysterious about who the two characters were. Why reveal so soon that one of them is Severus? JK did something like this in the second chapter of HBP, but unlike in this little paragraph, she didn't just not say who they were for awhile, and then reveal their name the first time they said something (by saying that that's who said it). What SHE did was have the character say the name of who they were talking to, which made much more sense. Also, if she's going to reveal the name of who said one thing, why not reveal the name of the person who said the other? I've actually thought of something else. How did these two people just happen to appear in the same place at the same time, yet not already know who the other person was? The first thing the mystery character asked was if Severus had any news, which, coupled with the fact that they both happened to appear at the same time, made it seem like the whole thing was planned. Yet, th...

I think people are questing the ending given to us and not the beginning extract, HorcruxSearcher. I know I am. I actually love the spoiler. It's dark, and chilling. But the epilogue is not the real thing. The small extract at least feels like Jo's work.

Posted by Startori Jul 15th 2007

Don't think it's real. need more information and I refuse to read any more until the book is actually out.

Posted by RUPERTgrintYO Jul 15th 2007

i dont think this is real.. it doesnt seem like JK's writing style.. well a bit of it does, but really. andybody could write something like that. but you never know.. it could really be the beginning the seven book!

Posted by HarryPotter62242 Jul 15th 2007

I knew it... the tall guy is Voldy and Snape is on his side!

Posted by Cypresswhisker Jul 15th 2007

FAKE. It's got to be fake. "The best." Ugh, and if it's real Snape is evil! :/

Posted by mrkurzer Jul 15th 2007

Guys, all of this "that is totally fake" is just wishful thinking. Put two and two together...you see the chapter listings, they seem to make sense, you can see that the cover looks like it is supposed to look...it's the book people. And that page count argument is weak, too. Very often, the page count listed counts the total number of ACTUAL/PHYSICAL pages in a book, which includes all the opening stuff (copyright, title, chapters) and probably an ad at the back as well. Face it...DH has been leaked.

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

More importantly, why would JK be carrying around her manuscript with her? She would NEVER just LET something like this slip out. She has always made absolute certain that nothing from her books is revealed until they are officially released.

Posted by PotterLove06 Jul 15th 2007

i dont even want to read it im too scared.

Posted by bookbug1012 Jul 15th 2007

I Can't wait til friday!!!!! Trying so hard to remain Spoiler free but they are sooooooo tempting

Posted by Tarentella Jul 15th 2007

Okay, whether this is true or not, it does not prove Snape's allegiances. He is a master manipulator and if indeed Dumbledore's death was pre-planned with Dumbledore, he isn't going to blow his cover right in the beginning of the book if he still can do something good. He's going to try and stay as close to Voldemort until the last moment. As for the epilogue, it's probably the most saccharine thing I read. It's quite a good hoax but to whomever pointed out that it doesn't end on page 784- thanks!

Posted by HarryPotter62242 Jul 15th 2007

@Eviegrl941: Quit Spoiling it for us real fans, who can wait until the book comes out!

Posted by PotterJedi15 Jul 15th 2007

Jo doesn't begin books in this fashion. There is always a description or background of the setting and characters. There has never yet been dialougue so early in the book either, especially without any descripton of who is speaking.

Posted by lidietta Jul 15th 2007

the ending (from the bits I read here - not going to visit those links!)sounds really corny and really out of JK's style.... she usually surprises us in incredible ways........ I want the REAL THING-- NOW!!!!!!!

Posted by mrkurzer Jul 15th 2007

For other reasons this is REAL, see my post above. But also realize this: These leaks--and I'm referring to the website that has SCANS OF THE ACTUAL BOOK--do not come about because Jo is carrying a manuscript. They come because in order to prepare for a massive releases, there are TONS of boxes sitting in the back of stores already. Inevitably, a few of these go missing.

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

Er...wait. Epilogue? Chapter listings? What are YOU guys talking about?

Posted by Mpol Jul 15th 2007

The extract I believe people, but the epilogue? THAT was placed by Schoolastic. Easily. And with each HP book, the final page is always the one with the final number we have been given. For HBP, the UK readers were told a certain number, and so the last page of the story, the one in which we see Harry look off into the sun set, we that same page number on it. So THAT argument is weak. Sorry. And this is the final HP book, the epilogue explains so little. In plast interviews Jo has said it will tell us what happened to all the remaining characters. And I refuse to believe they are Harry, Hermione, Ron and Ginny. It's far too unreal. Jo has never been unrealistic. And the style of the book isn't Jo. Simple as that.
