The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows? With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.

According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.

We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.

-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.

"News?", asked the taller of the two.

"The best," replied Snape.'

Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

At first I tried to resist highlighting the text. But then I thought that there is no way anyone could know the opening words. Nobody could know anything that Jo hasn't said. I don't think it sounded real and I hope it's not. I couldn't resist reading it but now I feel bad because I want to be surprised. I probably will though. I don't think that's real. OMG I can't believe it's almost here! 5 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! OMG AHHHHHHH OMG! *passes out from excitement then goes to read more HP*

Posted by Weasley_Freckles Jul 15th 2007

jo dont tortue me I NEED HP AND DH NOW!

Posted by MissMalfoy Jul 15th 2007

the epilogue is so .... fake. and i dont want it to end like that. anyway... Jo's style of writing is sophisticated and enchanting, unlike that totally stupid photoshopped epilogue. okay enough of my rant. but its really horrible because it tricks people into thinking it's real.

Posted by mrkurzer Jul 15th 2007

I'm not going to post a link--but if you check around the comment board you can find a few that have scans of the book (chapter titles, chapter artwork, actual text, etc). But needless to say, these are mega spoiler pages...read at your own risk. And I don't think that every single bit of information out there is correct; specifically, I find a contraction on one page regarding the fate of Ron. It actually DOES lead me to question the authenticity of the "epilogue" piece just a bit...especially if Mpol's argument about the page count is correct.

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

mrkurzer look at the page numbers, it ISN"T real!!!!!!!! at least the epilogue

Posted by kleigh629 Jul 15th 2007

Personally after reading the epilogue someone claims to have posted, seen the chapter titles and other things, I believe they are fake. Especially if you look at page numbers on the bottom of the pages, they don't match with what the booksellers are saying. According to them the book is 784 pages long, the so called epilogue is showing to end on page 739. Those two don't correspond. The epilogue reads as a fanfiction to me and not as JK's writing. She had already said the last chapter was the be worded as an article of what happens to those that survive. That was not an article. I'll be VERY surprised to open my copy of DH on Friday night and see any of what has been posted on the Internet. Somebody out there has been busy with Photoshop and their existing books. Good for them they have a future in computer graphics, but until I see my copy of DH I won't believe any of it.

Posted by Mpol Jul 15th 2007

Mate it is. Believe me! But look at the facts that JO has said that she writes about ALL of the characters that live. All the ones that have been in some form rellavent. Teere is NO WAY in hell she'd have those four only survive and kill off entire families. I'm sorry, that won't happen. It's either been planted by Schoolastic, or someone has taken a great effort in producing this. And why it. This is the biggest book release of the last fifty years.

Posted by JKrowlingismyIDLE Jul 15th 2007

oh wow this is very ezxciting. wow i cannot wait until next weekend.

Posted by Caroline526 Jul 15th 2007

I don't think this is real. Jo would not start a book so blountly. However, it is intriguing nonetheless. Friday night is drawing closer and closer, and my patience is growing thinner and thinner . . .

Posted by mrkurzer Jul 15th 2007

K. And I'm not trying to be combative--I didn't really like the epilogue as-is anyways. It was a bit too "happy little ending" for me--especially with the names (you guys know what I mean...).

Posted by RUPERTgrintYO Jul 15th 2007

why does everyone care how many pages the book is? that doesnt really matter, as long and you get the book, and you like it. thats just what i think anyway.. and, in that little excerpt it says "the two men.." if these two men werent already introduced, then why have "the" there? it makes no sense. JK would have written just "two men.." and also, i read in someone else post saying something about how she revealed snape fast. i dont think that she would do this, because, in other books, when revealing a new character she waits until someone says that characters name, and then when she continues writing she'll write in that persons name when they talk.. but, still.. you never know..

Posted by Nino44 Jul 15th 2007

In case they are real DON'T PUT UP SPOILERS! I don't want my 6 years waiting to be for nothing.

Posted by green_eyes621 Jul 15th 2007

I just don't see Snape saying, "The best.", but that could just be me. It could be real, but I don't think so.

Posted by MissMalfoy Jul 15th 2007

yeah the names were a bit far-fetched

Posted by Mpol Jul 15th 2007

mrkurzer no worries mate. You presented some great points. But no, teh ending will be far from THAT happy. I'll go out on a limb and say that I think the final chapter will be one of the longest. A lot of people will survive. Not all of them, but there will be quite a few.

Posted by dans_1_fan Jul 15th 2007

i read it, and i SERIUSLY doubt that it's real! first of all: JKR wouldn't start the first chapter like that and second: have u noticed how bad the grammar is?!?! this is totallly fake! 5 more days!! i can't wait, but it's also kinda sad! i don't want them 2 b over! all the exitment of rereading them will b GONE , no matter what happens, so it'll b kinda boring 2 read them again

Posted by tonksinlimegreenflipflops Jul 15th 2007

that doesn't seem like the beginning of the first chapter...it reminds me too much of the beginning of HBP. Unless it's some dream of Harry's. The chapter name doesn't sound right.

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

everything was far-fetched...at least in the epilogue.... just sooooo corny, jk wouldn't end the books, she said it would be about everyone who lives, not just "them".... bad photoshop.....real bad!!!

Posted by lostfan4ever Jul 15th 2007

that's the opening...

Posted by Fiji221 Jul 15th 2007

I don't think that this is the real opening to the book. Jo would never start it out so weakly. But it is interesting.

i don't believe that it's real

Posted by pheonix1 Jul 15th 2007

Well, I personall think that it is a fake, but I find it fun to read things like that. It just makes the excitement that much more intense. I mean, look at the security measures they have taken to ensure no one reads the books before the day of the release, so I am sure there was an extensive contract to ensure that anything that was filmed and any information about the book that was gathered could not be released before the release of the book.

Hmmm...

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

Haha! I just read the so called 'epilogue', and if that ISN'T fake, I'm going to fly to England and personally give JK a piece of my mind. I mean come on, Albus Severus? Hugo? Scorpio?! That was the lamest thing I have ever read, and there is absolutely no way that she would end the book like that. Besides, like someone has already said, the epilogue would tell about more than just Harry, Ginny, Ron, Hermione, and Draco. Something like that sort of begs for a continuation anyhow, and as I'm quite certain she doesn't plan on making one, she wouldn't end it like that. In any case, funny how these just happened to surface after the 'excerpt'. It was convenient enough that whoever made them could change the name of the first chapter. I must admit, though, some of the chapters sound awfully interesting. It's too bad that if one thing is fake, so much be everything else.

Posted by iletired Jul 15th 2007

Honestly, being a yearbook edtior, and having many years of photoshop skills, i think that epilogue is a fake. as for the title chapters, i am not so clearly sure on those pages, as it is harder to tell. i can pretty much assure you though, that the epilouge that is posted on those sites is 99.9999999% fake.

Posted by BillieTheVision Jul 15th 2007

I read the first pages of the so-called epilogue. If it's real the one it will be the first time i'm disappointed in anything from the Harry Potter books. I mean.. really.. that was a stupid ending.. I could have written that.. it's just a bunch of old popular theories, nothing new, nothing interesting

Posted by taylor77139 Jul 15th 2007

idk i thought it was real when i read... it gives away so little i dont think it matters if it is or not... the taller man must be voldemort... right?

Posted by HorcruxSearcher Jul 15th 2007

pheonix1 I'm sure ITV did have to sign an extensive contract. However Bloomsbury approved the 5 min preview that the British press got to see of the documentry the extract was seen in this preview, also this is where the press got the quote JKR: Some people will 'absolutely loathe' Book 7 (see full quote's in mugglenet and Leaky news). Nobody questioned the authenticity of JKR saying the above but they seem to think that the extracts fake. I don't understand how one piece of info is considerd true and the other is not when they both come from the same source?

Posted by madeye55 Jul 15th 2007

That is not Jo's writing. That is a very, very, very weak, thin, watered down paragraph that Jo would never use as the opening of the last book. If that is the real first chapter, I would be very, very surprised, not to mention disappointed.

Posted by lostfan4ever Jul 15th 2007

that's the opening...the tall man is not voldemort.

Posted by LadyCake Jul 15th 2007

I mean much harm. The Guardian should be ashamed of themselves for publishing this obvious fake, cause that seriously doesn't sound like Jo's writing. Unless she plans to jump right into the story from the first words, that's not her, and also it just doesn't sound like her writing style.

Posted by taylor77139 Jul 15th 2007

after he reading i now think it is fake.... there is no description and the line " they appeard out of nowhere" not jkr style....

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

people like Stripe 17 need to stop posting these idiotic "spoilers"!!!!!!!! the y R FAKE, on livejournal...u have to be KIDDING me....sooooo lame!!!

LADYCAKE: dig deep my weary son/daughter/shemale/were wolf....and alas, you shall laugh like a drunken hyiena

Posted by The_Mousey_One Jul 15th 2007

That epilogue can't be real - the page number looks like 353 or 253, the UK edition is over 600 pages, I can't remember how long the US version is sorry.

Posted by zacharypotter Jul 15th 2007

I was seriously considering breaking into Barnes & Noble and stealing a box of the books....

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

There are 101 reasons why that epilogue can't possibly be real. I could sit here all day explaining, but seeing as how the vast majority of people here can tell for themselves, I suppose I won't bother...

Posted by The_Mousey_One Jul 15th 2007

Oops nevermind it was a 7 heh, it still looks fake though - too much of a happy ending which I don't think is going to be the case with the book.

Posted by rob15 Jul 15th 2007

ZACHARYPOTTER: if you have some cheesecake then we can use them as bombs to attack any librarians, police, dirtburglars, or aggies while we steal some DH's from Barnes and Noble

Posted by brunoshunck Jul 15th 2007

OWww, Is anybody here brazilian?? I don´t think so! hehe well, this part of Deathly hallows is really true, people, isn´t it????? Ooh My God, I can´t wait anymore, the original seven books have already arrived in Brazil!!!!! I hope I receive my one in Saturday!!!!!!! Gone!

Posted by lizren697 Jul 15th 2007

i read this and i thought it did sound like something she would write. the chapter title is a little odd, but that may have just been a filler. it could have changed now. she often has started off books and chapters in a similar way. i dont know. i'm just so excited for the book! it comes out in less than 6 days. that' just...amazing.

Posted by Lemonhead Jul 15th 2007

What a dud.

Posted by hpintwense06 Jul 15th 2007

Ehhhhh.......... I don't know...... I actually read it (even though I hate spoilers) and I don't know... I mean anyone who's a fan of the books could've wrote that. I could've wrote that myself! It just seems... too simple or something to begin the 7th and final book. But who knows... plus it doesn't give to much away even if you do read it now.

Posted by lidietta Jul 15th 2007

well, it seems like if I don't want to be spoiled I'll have to turn off the comp. till I get my paws on the book °_° I'm seriously thinking of flying to the UK and break into someplace........

Posted by Startori Jul 15th 2007

By the way everyone, it's a PROLOGUE! not an epilogue. If it was an epilogue it should have been at the END of Half Blood Prince, but if it's at the BEGINNING of Deathly Hallows it is a PROLOGUE. Get out your dictionaries just once this summer, even though you aren't at school.

Posted by rob15 Jul 15th 2007

i knew you were a werewolf

Posted by lostfan4ever Jul 15th 2007

people, even if it was real (which i'm pretty sure it is) isn't it just the first few lines. i would hold judgement until you read the whole first chapter. perhaps this is a brilliant way to open the book, and you don't even realize it...

Posted by PirateEmery Jul 15th 2007

What are you blabbering about? The epilogue goes at the end of Deathly Hallows: there is no prologue.
