The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows? With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.

According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.

We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.

-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.

"News?", asked the taller of the two.

"The best," replied Snape.'

Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

Startori, you should feel really dumb for that comment. The people who are talking about an epilogue aren't talking about the thing up there, they're talking about some off-site links with supposed scans of the book.

Posted by teachdaisy Jul 15th 2007

I need something from Jo herself!!!! Jo, we are begging you, open the door on last time before July 21!!! Please one chapter name!!! That's not to much to ask!!!

Posted by lidietta Jul 15th 2007

startorl: I think everyone is talking about another spoiler that you haven't heard about ;););):):)! plese lets not talk abot school!!!!!

Posted by Stripe Jul 15th 2007

We're talking about the epilogue at the end of Deathly Hallows, which has been scanned in - the images are linked to in a comment further up. We're quite aware of the difference between an epilogue and a prologue. Personally, I hope they epilogue and these opening few lines are both fake. It's like reading bad fanfiction!

LIDIETTA:dig deep my weary son/daughter/shemale/were wolf...and alas, you shall laugh like a drunken hyiena

Posted by Dobby4ever Jul 15th 2007

That sounds like an opening chapter very much a like the one in HBP.. and it sounds kinda fake.. but ho knows? (Jo of course) - it might be real :P

Posted by MagicLantern Jul 15th 2007

When I read "The two men" it didn't sound original enough to be Rowling, but as I read on, the interest built so well that I thought either it is Rowling or a really good fanfic writer. If it is Rowling, this is not really a spoiler; more like a teaser trailer, and even less of a spoiler than a trailer. A spoiler ruins a book for you before you get a chance to read it. But the first lines of the book, if this is what they are, on the contrary, whet your appetite! This is less of a spoiler than seeing all the titles of the chapters. That ruined it for me with HBP because I saw that Dumbledore was going to die (even if we could predict it). I wouldn't worry about being spoiled with this.

Posted by lostfan4ever Jul 15th 2007

i can only hope that j.k. rowling is not reading any of these comments (which i'm sure she's not) imagine if these were her real opening lines and all of you were criticizing her words, the words you've been begging for forever. what a shame that would be. i suppose in 5 days you'll find out, and when seeing these are indeed the opening lines, you will apologize for critiquing her. i don't remember seeing you all write the first 6 books. she wrote it, and only she can know the best way to open the final book. perhaps the chapter as a whole will be amazing. why don't you just wait, or better yet stop analyzing and reading the opening lines. you'll give yourself a headache...5 days!

Posted by ragna Jul 15th 2007

Although I'm really really excited by reading these few lines, I hope the guys at The Guardian are teasing us. We'll see in 5 days and a little under 5 hours I guess!

Posted by lidietta Jul 15th 2007

rob15: heyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by grednforge Jul 15th 2007

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHH OMG I cannot wait any longer... but I just have to enjoy these last few days of speculating and waiting in excitement... you guys!!! these are the last couple days when we won't now how the adventure finally ends!! It's like I want Saturday to come sooooo badly, but I'm gonna be soooo sad when I finish it!!! So, let's just enjoy these last 5 days while we can.

Posted by HorcruxSearcher Jul 15th 2007

IT'S REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!! ACCEPT IT!!!!!!!! The only argument that this is fake is that it dosen't sound like Jo's writing style (I think it is her style) and I think many of us can remember we used this same argument with HBP spoilers which turned out to be real. Look the evidence shows us that it has to be real: - 1. The Guardian is a RESPECTED British newspaper and wouldn't print something that was fake 2. The extract came from the same source that told us that JO said 'some people will loathe the book and some will love it'- none of us said those extensive quotes were fake 3. The Guardian had Bloomsbury and ITV's permission to print the story (Bloomsbury wouldn't give them permission to print a fake)! Finally come on people they got the extract from the ITV documentry preview WHY WOULD JKR HAVE A FAKE EXTRACT ON HER COMPUTER?????????????????

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

lostfan4ever, wow, very "truthful and touching" i could've cried.....from laughter!!!

Posted by rob15 Jul 15th 2007

LIDIETTA: is that a happy "hey" or an angry "hey" or a cheesecake "hey"?

Posted by SiriusGirl Jul 15th 2007

Sounds pretty authentic, in my opinion, but who knows, really? I mean, I was a little bit suspicious about how quickly it just STARTED, going straight into the action.... never mind. It could be fake. But I hope it's not- that's a pretty cool chapter beginning, don't you agree? :D

Posted by imapirateargg Jul 15th 2007

I'm not reading it. I'm going to wait untill Friday to see the first chapter.

Posted by scopulus Jul 15th 2007

Thats not Her writing style. kthxbye

Posted by VolcanoCandy Jul 15th 2007

Let's all remember that Jo could have rewritten this a zillion times from when the Guardian supposedly saw this bit, so while it may be her work, it may not be in the book. And grednforge: EXACTLY what I was going to say! We have to keep in mind that these last few days of delicious agony will be our last! Let's enjoy the days as they d r a g by ;)

Posted by lostfan4ever Jul 15th 2007

it wasn't meant to be "touching"...i take it you believe they're fake. oh well, when you open the book in a few days and see that these are the opening lines, i suppose i'll be the one laughing. funny how that works...

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

What 'HBP spoiler that turned out to be real' are you talking about? All of the spoilers I read about that book WERE fake, aside from the ones from JKRs website, though those didn't really give much away.

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

HorcruxSearcher, most of us are talking about the suspected epilogue......i thought the beginning might sound real....but there seems to be errors in writing that def. editors would've taken in place, like Jk would always write Severus Snape if it was the opening chapter, not just Snape..... idk.....but the epilogue is FAKE

Posted by mugglemary Jul 15th 2007

I think it's real, but who cares? It doesn't give anything away, it's not like SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE or anything that spoils the book.

Posted by rob15 Jul 15th 2007

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaa aaaaaaaaaaahah hhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahaha hhaha ahhhhmuwhahahahaha ?

Posted by lostfan4ever Jul 15th 2007

where can you find the supposed epilogue??

Posted by i_eat_death_eaters Jul 15th 2007

it gives away nuthing--it could be anyone--is the moonlit lane privet drive??? is the good news death of albus????????

Posted by Startori Jul 15th 2007

Well, yes I was talking about the thing above, Sakibou. I didn't even attempt go to the other sites because I don't want to know even if it is true (or not) but I couldn't resist checking out the blacked out thing and it sure felt like a prologue to me. And I don't feel "dumb" because that means I am unable to speak, what you really mean is stupid, idiotic, imbecilic or even uninformed. To everyone else, I'm sorry for threatening you all with going back to school, especially since I've already graduated.

Posted by apriltiff Jul 15th 2007

i have no idea whether to believe it's real! i agree with grednforge and volcanocandy2... but if it is real, then that just ruined my day... because.... that character... and well... ugh.

Posted by lidietta Jul 15th 2007

Rob15: it's a cheesecake hey

Posted by G11nyW33zly Jul 15th 2007

I accedently clicked on the link for the Epolouge and I saw something I didn't want to see. I prey so hard that it's not real. PLEASE!!

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

lostfan4ever finally u saw i was talking about the epilogue they have been posting in previous posts, if u cared to look back....sure the beginning might be real, but the epilogue....u have to be kidding me....if u believe them, i think we all would be laughing at people like u....

Posted by riddleisourking Jul 15th 2007

The chapter title does correspond with this, http://www.kaos-krew.net/ harry/

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

G11nyW33zly, how could you have possibly 'accidentally' clicked on the link when there are spaces in it so you would have actually had to physically post it in the address bar and remove them?

Posted by b00dwin Jul 15th 2007

THIS IS A FAKE. IT SAYS "YARDS". IN THE UK, THEY USE METERS, NOT YARDS.

Posted by rob15 Jul 15th 2007

LIDIETTA: cheesecake heys are my favorite kind of heys, they're probably the tastiest heys of all time...anyway HPGIRL21053: calm yourself young padded one...that's it....now slowly jump out of your window...snipe out your neighbor now sneakily as a mouse go steal some cheeesecake for me and some rope so i can tie you to a beanpole and beat you senseless with the DH cover

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

heheehe, i know, i am getting very Durleyish here!!!!!!!!!!!! hehe :D

Posted by MuggleMage Jul 15th 2007

This just doesn't seem like it would be the opening though it is interesting. Guess we'll find out in 5 days, 10 hours and 23 minutes! ^.^

Posted by LordJack Jul 15th 2007

Sounds kinda fake to me, but i'll eat my short's if it really is!

Posted by Sami Jul 15th 2007

I think the excerpt from the beginning is authentic (if a bit outdated), but that "Epilogue" that's been floating around is so fake it's pathetic. The new names alone are evidence of how trashy those 7 pages are. Fake, fake, fake.

Posted by riddleisourking Jul 15th 2007

Plus if it's a fake of the US version, the Epilogue ends on page 739 or 759 can't really tell, but there are 784 pages in the US version.

Posted by Colonna Jul 15th 2007

Unfortunately, there are several scans of pages from the US edition of Deathly Hallows. I thought it was an obvious fake at first, but after seeing two things, I quickly was convinced that it was real. Unfortunately, I learned one of the characters who dies (won't reveal the name or gender) and the person who kills this character as well. One thing I'll mention, because it's really nothing (and, if real, will prove the scanned pages are real after next week), one of the chapters is called "Malfoy Manor".

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

dumb /dʌm/ 1. lacking intelligence or good judgment; stupid; dull-witted. For someone who acts as though they know so much about vocabulary, you should know that a word can have more than one definition. Now you should REALLY feel 'stupid'.

Posted by lidietta Jul 15th 2007

I've been thinking, and the said so opening sounds pretty authentic, but it doesn't look as if it opens a chapter, more like it's written somewhat after the opening phrases

Posted by Azure Jul 15th 2007

i think the chapter title sounds right, but the writing doesn't seem like jkr's, maybe it's just a rough draft???

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

rob15, i will calmly say now that u have beaten me with DH, i will say that if the epilogue scan is true, i will be dissappointed...... bu t that is it for me.....i have an unusual hyena laugh now, due to rob15.... :p

Posted by SlytherinForever Jul 15th 2007

People! If this is real this is the chapter she wrote when she FIRST began writing HP. She said she changed almost nothing of the last chapter. Probably because she's emotionally attached to it. So yeah it SUCKS but that doesn't mean the rest of the book will.

Posted by G11nyW33zly Jul 15th 2007

Sorry I meant accedently as in omg I can't handle this I must click the link aaaaaah *looks at the epolouge* NOOOOO

Posted by ebhpfan07 Jul 15th 2007

who's the taller one? a death eater...or in the order??

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

SlytherinForever, did you actually READ that 'epilogue'? I don't care if it was supposed to have been written before she even started writing HP, there is NO WAY that that is her writting.

Posted by Scarface7 Jul 15th 2007

The epilogue that was posted appears fake. There was another link posted where my hand "accidently" slipped and what I found was a table of contents. Also photocopies of two pages with chapter art. The person who posted this also gave some background to some of the chapters. The first chapter matches up with the supposed first chapter of this news article. These photocopies might be faked, but I'll say the style of the chapter art mimicks the original style very closely. The fonts and format are also convincing. Anybody can dig up the link if they really want. I won't put the temptation there for any who don't want to be tempted. I do think many out there protests too much, in that when given the opportunity to avoid these spoilers, they "accidently" peek.

Posted by riddleisourking Jul 15th 2007

LISTEN, THE US VERSION IS 784 PAGES LONG! THIS DOESN'T ADD UP!

I still don't like your tone, boy. If you can speak of your beatings in that casual way, they clearly aren't hitting you hard enough. Petunia, I'd write if I were you. Make it clear that you approve the use of extreme force in this boy's case.
