The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows? With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.

According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.

We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.

-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.

"News?", asked the taller of the two.

"The best," replied Snape.'

Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

HPGIRL21053: I'm actually a librarian at Barnes and Noble and this is actually what happens: in chapter 1 Dumbledore wakes up with Sirius lying in his barrel of cheeesecake that dumbledore fell into and sirius got transported there from the veil, but then snape comes along and kill sirius...but Dumbledore stuffs some cheesecake down Snapes throat and whacks him with a cat he found. then in the last chapter: Ron trips over Hagrid and dies then Harry ties Voldy to a tree and sends fang on him...and poors some bat droppings on him

I read it, if it´s real it´s not very spoilery. I wonder who the two men could be.....hhhhmmmm.... Ah well it doesn´t make any plot reveals so i´m not that worried about it. And the hacker person... Does anyone know if there was a conclusion to that? Like did the info turn out to be fake? I hope so. I duno why, I didn´t read it, but I guess it would be just sad for JKR if her most important book´s plot leaked.

Posted by arwen21 Jul 15th 2007

this is crap. look at the weak dialogue. what snape says doesn't suit his character at all..i still can't wait for the book and everything there is not j. k. rowlings style at all.....

Posted by riddleisourking Jul 15th 2007

784 pages people! not 759

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 15th 2007

rob15, wow, i am actually amused now, i think i BELIEVE ur new spoiler, and am very interested, i think the cheesecake is VERY important....... now my interest in the book has skyrocketed, and from a LIBRARIAN at B&N, just amazing........ :D

Posted by Stripe Jul 15th 2007

The "epilogue" can't be real. Who in their right mind would name their child 'Scorpius'!? If I flip to the back of Deathly Hallows on Saturday and find that epilogue in there, I will no longer have any respect for JKR. ANY.

Posted by hpwizkid Jul 15th 2007

Gah.......I.WANT.THAT.BOO K! I think this may be a legit excerpt--the chapter title is interesting to say the least. 'Nuff said.......

Posted by SteffieSnape Jul 15th 2007

I don't think it's legit. I may be wrong but it's my intuition it's fake. First of all, I really think it's highly unlikely we would get a direct snippet from the new book from anyone other than Jo herself or her publishers. Secondly, it doesn't sound like Jo at all.... the wording, it's not Jo-esque at all. It sounds fanfiction-ish to me. Of course, I could be wrong and it's legit but who knows. I just really have doubts. I can't believe it's only 5 days away! AHHH! First thing friday morning I'm bee-lining it to Borders to get my wristband! With the last book I didn't know they were doing that so I didn't get one til I got there around 8pm. I want to be in the first group this time! I'm so excited!

Posted by Crazy_for_Harry Jul 15th 2007

Ugghhh I couldn't help it so I read it! But true it's not spoiling anything except the title of the first chapter really. And people I wouldn't be calling the dialogue crappy and bad yet until July 21st when we can see if The Guardian was right (keep in mind The Guardian is not some tabloid newspaper either..).

Posted by SlytherinForever Jul 15th 2007

Sakibou: I sure hope this is a fake but I've seen scans of other pages from a different source and the title matches. I have read the epilogue and said it SUCKS.

Posted by G11nyW33zly Jul 15th 2007

Well, she did say that some people would loath the book.... uh oh...

Posted by Tarentella Jul 15th 2007

Well, that epilogue is just terrible. I mean, it really is. I can't imagine anyone except a ten year old liking it.

Posted by Stupifyed Jul 15th 2007

that doesnt sound like something snape would say...

Posted by gandalfxj9 Jul 15th 2007

I am so NOT reading this. I want the book to be a surprise!! Every single word of it!! But i did read the the chapter title "Dark Lord Acending"!! AHH!!! NOT GOOD!!!!

Posted by Crazy_for_Harry Jul 15th 2007

It may not sound like something he would say but you have to consider who he is talking to....and right now we have no clue who that could be. Remember, whatever side Snape is on, he is a great actor. Who knows how he talks when he's having a conversation with Voldemort. Probably sounds like a high pitched girl :P

Posted by rob15 Jul 15th 2007

CRAZY_FOR_HAIRY: i thought it sounds like a low pitched dirtburglar with a hint of pepper...but that's just me

Posted by harryrox Jul 15th 2007

goodness gracious!!! and wht abt those rumours of neville being the chosen one??

Posted by TheCreakyStairMaster Jul 15th 2007

I couldn't help myself and I read all the spoilers. I am now MORE excited for the book to come out! I almost hope those scanned chapter titles are genuine because they sound awesome. However, I am APPALLED at the Epilogue. That CANNOT POSSIBLY be genuine. It is my worst nightmare of an Epilogue...EVER. I am certain Jo did not write that...still, I am nervous that it will show up in the book when I get it Saturday....WTF!?!?! That BETTER not be the real epilogue...it just better not be!

Posted by Sakibou Jul 15th 2007

I want to see these chapter pics that people keep talking about.

Posted by Kid_A Jul 15th 2007

I think this part is real, because it is written in a very famous newspaper's online website. But the part doesn't give that much away...

Posted by yasincetin Jul 15th 2007

welll it doesnt exactly sound like J.K's writing....i dun thinkits real

Posted by PirateEmery Jul 15th 2007

Actually, I just reread the Epilogue and it is growing on me. For anyone that says that Scorpius is a bad name, I point directly to 'Draco.' Enough said.

Posted by dpatrickguy Jul 15th 2007

if it is real it gives away nothing

Posted by michael_xxx10 Jul 15th 2007

If this is talking about Dumbledore? why would JK go back in time? at the end of the book, it has been days since his death, and this sounds, if its remarking on Dumbledore being killed by Snape, the chronology is so confused. Oh could it be Snape talking to Dumbledore? but i dont think so. i think this is pure fake.

Posted by Harryfan12 Jul 15th 2007

Yeah, that sounds fake to me. Not what Jo would right. Besides, October 23, 2006. She could have changed it by now. Oh, I really hope that isn't the opening.

Posted by Eviegrl941 Jul 15th 2007

Kid_A: you're right. Everyone else: why does everyone rule out that it's real just because it says "for a second" and it uses "Snape" instead of his full name? Maybe that's why JKR let the leak happen, to see if we'd be able to tell if it's her. I'm just hoping that it's real so that we can find out what Snape's been up to when he left Hogwarts, as I'm sure everyone wants to know. Where else could she put a chapter not directly about Harry? It's always the first chapter.

Posted by Scooby Jul 15th 2007

Mugglenet take the spoiler people off please! I can't even read peoples comments without having to skim down the page cus someone has posted Chapter titles (apparently!)

Posted by Prof_Dumbledore Jul 15th 2007

Ah, well this is interesting. I now ponder several things. Is this true? Who is the "taller man"? Could it be a different Snape besides Severus? There is likely more than one Snape in the Wizarding World. Now, my greatest wish to fast forward in time and read the book!

Posted by flojo020 Jul 15th 2007

OMG!!! I just read the so-called spoiler and wondered is this for real??!!

Posted by rob15 Jul 15th 2007

EVIEGRL941: thank you, i know i'm right that's why my middle name is "right" (yesterday it was flippin)

Posted by potterfreak0515 Jul 15th 2007

I. Hate. You. What about the anti-spoiler policy???? I know it's not definitely a spoiler, but what if it is? I haven't read it. This is a test of my resistance to spoilers. Well, I sort of glanced at half the first line. But I'm not going to read any more than that! *cry* Leaky better not have reported this! I can't believe you're tempting me like this! Five more days left... Five days, ten hours, and 42 minutes. I'm not going to read it!!! I will resist and you have know power over me!!!!!!!

Posted by fevilz Jul 15th 2007

WICKEDDDDDDDDDD

Posted by lidietta Jul 15th 2007

rob15: wow!!!!!!!! where do you get these amazing theories??????? personally, I think that they are the best ones on this site ^_^ laughing like a drunken hyena ;)

Posted by kann28 Jul 15th 2007

omg...I can't decide...ok I'm not going to read it....oh forget it I have no control

Posted by SPEW07 Jul 15th 2007

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. ......................... .....I BURST OUT WITH SOMEWHERE BETWEEN A LAUGH AND A GASP JSFKGHSD;LFKHNM SO EXCITED

Posted by slickstickers Jul 15th 2007

THE SCANS ARE FAKE, BUT THE EXCERPT IS PROBABLY REAL.

Posted by SteffieSnape Jul 15th 2007

Oh, and I've read that "Epilogue". If that isn't the fakest thing I've ever seen I don't know what is. I agree with who ever said it sounded like bad fanfiction. The photoshopping is pretty well done but seriously... if they wanted to make it believable they would have remembered that the book is 784 pages, not 759. Idiots. They have nothing better to do than freak people out. It's just like that moron who drove around the parking lot screaming Snape killed Dumbledore. Some people have no respect. Oh, and as fake as I believe this is... if in some nightmare of a situation it turns out to be true then I will take to heart what Jo has said recently about people loathing the book. Let's hope that doesn't happen :)

Posted by anthonybarrantes Jul 15th 2007

well just so you know that is the real title yeah i got the links to the chapter titles and that is indeed the chapter title and yeah thats cool i'm sad because i know what happens.

Posted by TheCreakyStairMaster Jul 15th 2007

Here is my final thought: 1. The excerpt from the beginning is real. 2. The chapter titles are most likely real.... 3. The Epilogue is fake (and this is also WISHFUL thinking) because it absolutely stinks, and because it ends on page 759 when Scholastic has already told us that the book is 784 pages long.

Posted by Eviegrl941 Jul 15th 2007

rob15: I was talking to Kid_A, unless you have 2 usernames. michael_xxx10: If you mean the Epilouge, it's not talking about Dumbledore, it's talking about Harry's second child, Albus Severus Potter. They may be talking about Dumbledore's death with Snape, but they're talking about it with a stranger in the Guardian thing, and it may not even be the death they're talking about.

Posted by amy4dan1327 Jul 15th 2007

ummm that's pretty interesting!!! i didn't read the whole thing, but yeah, there's not much to say, i guess!!!! but yeah, i just finished the 3rd book last night, and i starting the 4th one today, cuz i'm planning on reading them them all for the second time before friday!!! yay!!!! only 5 more days!!!!!!!!!! =]

Posted by tacc1993 Jul 15th 2007

It doesn't sound like her writing. I doubt it is real.

Posted by Ashlee751 Jul 15th 2007

I honestly believe that this is real. The chapter title is the same as a leak that we had a few days ago from a different source in the US. Although the other leak yesterday, is absolutely fake, it was four pages, did not explain anything, and if Harry and Ginny have a baby called Albus Severus I will have to stab myself in the eye.

Posted by riddleisourking Jul 15th 2007

Yes 784 pages, that is the key!

Posted by rob15 Jul 15th 2007

EVIEGIRL941: sorry, i thought KID_A was codeword for ROB15

Posted by Star121 Jul 15th 2007

I want to read it but I can't decide!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Eviegrl941 Jul 15th 2007

I've never heard of it, but what if the Epilouge is more than one chapter long, and that was only the first one. I expect to be shot down with this one. Thank you for listening to a weirdo's theory.

Posted by pixiedust7 Jul 15th 2007

omigod...i want the book so bad right now

Posted by scar_obbessed Jul 15th 2007

Ohhhhhhh, I wonder if the taller guy is lik RAB or someone lik that. Cause he wouldnt be someone we know or the would use his name lik the used Snape's unless they didnt want us to know...

Posted by nekotheninja Jul 15th 2007

NOT TRUE. I KNOW j.k.'S WRITING STYLE. SHE WOULD NEVER START A BOOK THIS WAY.
