The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.
We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.
-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.
"News?", asked the taller of the two.
"The best," replied Snape.'<--
Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!
Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

nekotheninja: Um... actually, she has. If you read HBP, she started somewhat like this. Maybe not the Prime Minister chapter, but the true chapter one, where Bella and Narcissa are going to visit Snape. It's kind of similar.
can someone tell me the link to see this "fake" epilogue please...
Ok, I read the epilogue, idk what to think of it. it's shorter than I would have thought and really doesn't show what happens to all the characters, just a few. I really hope it is fake. The chapter scans, I'm sorry but BIG DEAL! It's just chapter titles. It doesn't really give anything away, just wets the appetite and possibly adds a little intrigue. I sort of hope the chapter titles are real. As for this excerpt, I am just going to wait for an update. Soon JKR and her publishers will at least address this issue though they may not confirm or deny it.
EVIEGRL941: i did read HBP...and yes it is kind of similiar, its just dawned upon me! thank you!?
THE SPOILER SCANS THAT ARE SPREADING AROUND ARE FAKE FOR SEVERAL REASONS: 1) The Table of Contents always has 8 chapters listed on the first page and 9 on all of the others, while the alleged leaks have 9 chapters listed with 10 on the others. 2) The shadows on the book, especially those between the pages, are very fake looking. 3) There is no back cover visible where there clearly should be. Instead there are very suspicious looking dark blurs. 4) About ¾ of the way down one of the scans there is an impossible bend in the book that spans both pages. 5) Some pages in the scans are outrageously translucent, but the real Potter pages are relatively thick. 6) Towards the top of the inside flap of the jacket you can tell that it’s WAY too shiny (almost laminated). In extent, the color of the binding is not consistent from scan to scan. 7) The harlequin patterned page that normally appears after the Table of Contents is not there. 8) The epilogue is supposed to explain what happens to those who survive, so unless only 5 people survive… 9) The epilogue sounds like a 5 page Fan-Fiction. The names sound very dodgy. 10) THIS IS THE BIGGIE… THE BOOK HAS 784 PAGES, WHILE THE SCAN ENDS ON SOMETHING LIKE PAGE 759.
I can almost see Harry naming one of his kids Albus, but to name him Albus SEVERUS? Wth? Those two names don't go together AT ALL. And, even if at the end of the DH Severus redeems himself in some extraordinary way, Harry has still hated him for most of the story, so I doubt he'd name a kid after him. In any case, ALL of Harry's kids in that epilogue are named after someone else. That seems a little extreme.
For those of you talking about the different final page count numbers on the supposed "epilogue" I'm not sure if the final page count is perfect (or they may be counting the non-numbered pages in the final page count)...(though I'm hoping this is wrong) Check the pages for the Hardcover (has to be hardcover version) versions of the Harry Potter books on Amazon, look at the page count number. If you have the version of those books nearby, check the number on the last page of the book. For me, I checked books 5 and 6 and the actual last page number appears to be about 20-30 or so pages less then what is quoted on Amazon. If this correlates with the supposed epilogue, then the page differences between the quoted page count and the number on the epilogue page would make sense. I hope I'm wrong, though (I just saw someone pointing this out on a blog) can someone contradict this?
I don't believe it. It just doesn't seem like Jo to start out like that.
JKR needs to go to her website and post that this is completly fake!!!!! or else I might just kill myself if she says this is actually true =[
maybe Jo was drunk when she wrote that
I dunno. This is a bit to small to tell if it's really J.K. Rowlings writing or not. But now i totally want the book.
EVIEGIRL941: I had thought of that, actually. Why would this epilogue we're referring to have a title, and not just be called "epilogue," like most books? I think you're right... Even so, I'm sorry to say it, but... That epilogue just sucks!
"How did the characters go 19 years into the future? Well, remeber that piece of equipment that Hermione used in book 3 to time travel? Well, she used that. That's all. for now." This is a quote from one of those sites that has the supposed ToC and epilogue scans. This seems to be a giveaway in itself because why would the epilogue be describing something that happens as a result of using a Time Turner? Wouldn't it just be what happens in the future, with no time travel involved?
Wow i just read it and i have no idea wheather to belive it or not!!! ughh!! CANT WAIT FOR FRIDAY!!! (:
Yeah, the chapter titles likely seem fake as well, unless they've suddenly changed the US edition for this release. The US edition books, hardcover and softcover, always start with the first eight chapters on the first page.
rob15: OR she had smoked something ;)
it was probably pubic cow hair
EVIEGIRL941: I had thought of that same scenario. Otherwise, why would the epilogue we're referring to (which is NOT the excerpt from the Guardian, for all of those so quick to comment without reading the dialogue that's been going on) be titled? Why wouldn't it just be called "Epilogue," like in other books? Hmmm... Either way, hope it's fake, 'cause it SUCKS :)
Is this supposed trailer for the documentary online?
VERY likely........^_^
wow......all i can say is that i can not wait!
I say the "other taller man" could be R.A.B....if Snape's on the good side! :)
rob15, pubic cow hair....... wow.....th at was actually original, but SICK!!!!! nice job :D
everyone knows R.A.B. stands for Radcliffe Actually Barfs
omg what newsss? i need to know!
I CANNOT read something like this...Leaky hasn't posted yet, it's probably their spoiler policy.
At least it's supposedly just the opening and at least release is soon so that we can then see if these claims are true.
Well...the chapter titles may be true and not fake... and I assume that the Epilogue is false, but you never know.... oh, i have no will of myself:(( I didn`t wanted to be spoiled by anything......
Well, I have to agree that it sounds fake and too abrupt to be the start of the book. Also, I think JKR would be careful not to reveal anything, not just because this is her last book but non of her previous books have had large leaks like this (except one's she revealed herself). Hopeful she'll tell us if it is fake! *crosses fingers*
This doesn't seem real. Usually the first time Jo says a characters name she will say their full name, like Severus Snape instead of just Snape.
AHHHHHHHHH! I don't know if it is real or not, but who cares? I still want the book so much!
perhaps the opening is leaving right off where HBP left off, with snape heading off to meet with the death eaters after killing dumbledore...why not start off abruptly? no one said there had to be any rules to starting a book a correct way. i think it's kind of interesting and cool...
The argument that the epilogue has to be fake is not valid in my opinion. I just checked amazon to see how many pages it lists for OtP, and it says 896. I checked my book and the last page number is 870. That means that the last numbered page is around 26 pages short of the original page count. ALSO- the epilogue was taken with a Canon camera- and has not been touched by photoshop. If you want to see yourself, right click the photo and select properties and click advanced. It is also interesting to note that the picture was taken yesterday at 1:30 pm. In my opinion, there is no doubt whatsoever that it is real. The books are already being delivered as we speak, and libraries across the country unpacked their boxes and prepared them for cataloguing last friday.
Radcliffe Actually Barfs rob15, i laughed soooo hard when i saw this!!!!!!!! soooo funny, but maybe true..... hmmmm.... :D
I believe it's real. It matches up with a page I think might be authentic. That page does not give out the epilogue, but lists the US version as beginning on page 753, and is simply titled "Epilogue". I give this information because it does not reveal anything about the plot ant the length of the book has already been revealed. There really hasn't been enough in the dialogue listed in the article to give an honest critique on writing style. A lot of people would just like to sound like experts or that they know J K Rowling personally.
man i cannot wait til the release of hp and the deathly hallows i hope harry doesnt die evn if the prophecy says wat it says. and i definitely dont want ron or hermoine 2 die.
One of the supposed chapter titles: The Ghoul In PAJAMAS. i rest my case. :/
If she always uses peoples full names when she introduces them howcome in half blood prince she introduces narcissa by bellatrix calling her cissy
SPOILERS- this is a summary of the epilogue. DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW!! Please excercise some self-restraint and look at the next comment. For those who want to know, here it is. The last two sentences are "Harry's scar had not pained him for nineteen years. All was well." The epilogue is set "Nineteen years later" (making harry 36). Harry and Ginny are dropping their children off at platform 9 3/4. Their names are Albus, Lily, George and Hugo. Ron and Hermione are also dropping off their child. While they are there, they see Draco Malfoy with his wife and child. He is balding. Albus tells Harry he is worried that he will become Slytherin, and Harry assures him that one of Hogwart's headmasters, and perhaps the bravest men he knew, Severus Snape, was a Slytherin. Hermione tells her daughter to give Herbology professor Neville "some love."
I COUNLDN'T RESIST!!!!! I MADE MY DAD READ IT FIRST THOUGH, IN CASE IT GAVE SOMETHING AWAY. I'M NOT SURE IF IT'S REAL THOUGH...
I just thought of something else. In that supposed epilogue, it says 'epilogue' at the top of one page, and 'Nineteen Years Later' at the top of the other. Doesn't it usually say the chapter NUMBER on one page, and the chapter title on the other?
This is very tempting and brings more excitement towards the arrival of the 7th book ahhhhhhhhhh
c.ronaldo is awesome yeah everyone---my friend's in denial---but it so is her style--like mysterious--but i doubt its real cuz its too concealing
At first when you see these spoilers part of your heart sinks and your stomach drops. Deep down there is a fear they might, possibly, even very slightly, be true. Alas, having looked at all these supposed spoilers I just have to keep faith that they are all very fake. So fake in fact that I want to whack my head on the keyboard repeatedly to get out my frustration. If you've seen all the spoilers then you'll notice they contradict each other very much so. I believe now that epilogue is completely fake, I had a feeling it was, and I pity the person who wrote it because it sounded like awfully horrible retched fanfiction. "Albus Severus"? Only 759 pages? Come on, you can do better than that. And the chapter titles and the supposed summaries of them? It's almost humorous. Of course, as I've said before if any of it turns out to be true than I think I might die in shock. I'll have a thing or two to say to Jo. Like, where's the real book?! We'll see though, only a few more days! Woot!
idk if this is really the opener cuz it "the taller of the two" makes me think Voldemort but y would Voldemort meet Snape in a "narrow, moonlit lane"?? wouldnt he be afraid of being caught?
aristali, you're summary is a bit off. Harry only has three kids in the epilogue, and their names are Albus, JAMES, and Lilly. The final two are one of the reaons why I don't believe that the epilogue is real; it seems a bit strange to name your kids after not one, but BOTH of your deceased parents. I mean, did Ginny have any say in this at all? Besides, usually when people name their kids after family that has passed away, they use it as their middle, not first name (unless one of the names is the fathers name). And, I've definitely never heard of naming your kids after BOTH of your parents. Anyhow, Hugo was supposed to be Ron's kid (along with Rose).
Why do I get the feeling that this is one of J.K.'s rough drafts? I feel as thoiugh this opening doesn't quite do her writing justice... Then again, I could be wrong.
arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Want. Book. Now!
That's fake. Jo wouldn't start a book off this bluntly. But this marks the time where I have to stop visiting mugglenet because I can't control myself when I see those Highlighting portions. (for now at least)
no wayy
