The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.
We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.
-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.
"News?", asked the taller of the two.
"The best," replied Snape.'<--
Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!
Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

i drooled. uncontrollably.
The ending death of the latest released Harry Potter book is... SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE
Imagine if the opening line was "Harry Potter had just finished killing Voldemort when Dudley came into Harry's room....."
i dont think they should be allowed to post that cuz that is the worst kinda spoiler.
Nice, but I don't really think this is a real excerpt from the book!.. I don't know, it's just not Jo's style. Well, one way or another, I CAN'T wait for that book!!
They posted it because they have no way of knowing for sure if it is a real spoiler. And, even if it is (which I certainly don't think is true), it's not like it gives all that much away.
Also there is a posting on antoher websites forum of the heading of chapter seven showing a picture of harry and ginny this picture looks an awful lot like harry potter illustration if you ask me. email me arock1327@aol.com and I'll send you the link to this forum, there are a few other spoilers on this site. Oddly enough, I can no longer access the scans of the epilogue that are poster on this forum. hmm... taken down because they are real? possibly, I have no idea
well, well, well, I've never ever read these many spoilers before a hp book release °_° (didn't go to any links, just read the comments of you guys!) .....!!!!!!!!*-* STARSTRUCK (_ is the spelling OK?_)
I love it how everyone is assuming that the excerpt isn't real, even though this is from a decidedly reliable source. The chapter title is real, and I find it highly unlikely that The Guardian would risk marring their reputation in this way. However, I am willing myself to believe that this Epilogue of which we are speaking -- I saw it yesterday -- is fake. I have not read the entire thing (just in case), but the mixed up page count; its short length; and the fact that it is so poorly written cause me to believe it is fake. Also, I happen to believe that Jo is perfectly capable of writing such an opening, and I think that it is a very GOOD opening, at that. To say, "Jo would never start a book this way" is somewhat presumptuous, seeing as we can't see inside of Jo's head, and she perfectly well could've decided to start it this way. I'm not going to put it past her.
***Spoiler Discussion*** One other contraction that I've found...many of the "spoiler" websites present a pretty fundamental contraction. On the one hand, they say that Ron dies battling Bellatrix (who is subsequently killed by Neville; on the other hand, all of these epilogues seem to indicate the presence of Ron with Hermione (and their kids). I have no idea what to believe--but who cares? For now, its the same as before: theories. ***Spoiler Discussion***
Argh, I read it and it is difficult for me to decide if I'm more excited, or disgusted with myself. I thought I had more self-control than that! *inwardly scolds self*
MusicIsSoulVomit- i know!!!! i read it without thinking..now i hate myself, even if it is true or not i was ready to spoil a part of it. shame all of you people who read it too!! shame on us all. shame...*shakes head and ak self*
OMG amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't wait to read the book now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well sleepless, I have to agree basicly with you. Although nowhere is it confirmed that the chapter title is real, its pluasible along with the excerpt. I mean yes, its not as complex as Jo likes to get all the time, but it does, at least in my opinion, contain elements of Jo's style. And since it has been written by one of Englands most reliable newspapers (who would deffinatly not want to ruin their reputation by posting something like this) its likely to be true. As to the epilogue, its deffinatly fake. Whereas this excerpt contains some of Jo's style, the excerpt contains, at least in my opnion, far less. The chapter image looks like a slightly edited image from another book and there is a mixup in the page numbers if I'm not mistaken. And its entirly possible if I'm wrong; I apologize if I am. All in all, I say wait till the 21st.
WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHERE THIS EPILOGUE IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there are almost 8,000 of us online right now!!! DH in 6 days i can't believe it!
I just thought now (amazing how a simple chocolate bar can be such a braib booster.....) that, in my case, since I don't really believe all these rumors, the book isn't that "spoiled", 'cause I'll just read the book wondering about the true ending.........
That's totally fake!
I don't think this sounds like Jo. tantalizing, though....OMG! this is a fabulous time to be alive!!!! 5 days!!!
GINNY101: it sounds like Jo on pubic cow hair with some rat poison and some dirt
This is fake. JK Rowling wouldn't say "for a second" she'd say "for a moment" second just doesn't fit her writing style. i don't think she's ever used second before. Still really interesting though.
HERE IS THE EPILOGUE http:// i13.tinypic.com/6b9k6tl .jpg http:// i17.tinypic.com/6cfi4p5 .jpg http:// i10.tinypic.com/61nud1d .jpg http:// i10.tinypic.com/6fta6hs .jpg
I just thought of something else. If the last chapter is supposed to be called 'Nineteen Years Later', why does the Table of Contents only say 'Epilogue'? 'Nineteen Years Later' is kind of a crappy title anyways, especially by JK's standards.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH SOME OF YOU! HOW CAN YOU STAND TO READ SPOILERS? YEARS OF WAITING UNDERMINED BECAUSE YOU CAN'T WAIT 5 DAYS! THAT'S JUST SICK!
Really amazing how well all of you have analyzed Jo's writing style
Here's a website where you can see all the so-called spoilers: ht tp://www.kaos-krew .net/harry/
Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow. I don't know, I feel it's true, but wow, since we got nothing from JK for this book (no chapter title, no quote, no new character's name), it just came as a big punch in the stomach. To me, with the chapter title, I feel it's Snape with Lucius, going to a Death Eaters' meeting. Now, is it in the first war or the second? The chapter title seems to announce the first war, but I'm not sure. If it is, maybe it's DE!Snape we'll be seeing in this chapter and not Spy!Snape. Just to confuse the readers some more ;)
If it's real: ::punches the air:: WOO IT STARTS WITH SEVERUSSSSS!!! If it isn't: Nice try. I can't tell either way.
it's probably just a load of tosh. for one, i don't think j.k. rowling would name the first chapter of a book 'the dark lord ascending'. plus, we already know that...why do you think we are in a wizarding war in the first place? plus, its definitely NOT her writing style.
I really *love* all those people who think they know JKR better than her own children...
should i read it? i don't know...this is KILLINGGG me!! gahhhh ... ! i kinda don't want to read b/c of spoilers and we still don't know if the segment really is true, so i don't want to be disappointed when i get my book. soo..can somebody point me in the right direction? should i read it?
i agree with plumenoire in that it's lucius malfoy. the tall guy is obviously out of the loop otherwise he would not say News? like that. if malfoys been in azkaban he might ask like that, but the dude can't be good otherwise he would not be with snape. so conclusion, evil eater lucius malfoy second war. the only question is WHEN does this take place?
I'm not sure if I believe it. I'd want to see that trailer (I'm good at spotting things...) What's all this about an Epilogue??
Gryffgirl, doesn't it seem plausible that the Dark Lord's power is increasing and that he is therefore "ascending"? It was a war before, yes, but I this will be the first time that we see the effect of his power. I wouldn't be surprised if he attempts to take over the Ministry. If that's not ascension then I don't know what is. ...And here we go again analyzing her writing style.
Go ahead and read it. I doubt that it's real, but even if it is, it doesn't give anything away. Once you read it, you still won't know what's going on. As for the spoilers I posted a link to, those I'm 99.99% sure aren't real (so sure, in fact, that I'd fly to England and personally give JK Rowling a piece of my mind if they were). They'd be major if they were, but although most of the chapter titles are pretty decent, the supposed epilogue itself is a load of crap. My ten-year-old cousin could have done better.
i'll say it again for those who didn't listen the first time. the REAL book has 784 pages and the FAKE book with scans online has only 759 pages. It simply can't be real, despite convincing art. numbers don't lie.
Some people on other sites were suggesting that Scholastic counts not only the book's content but the author/illustrator biography, dedication, table of contents, et cetera. I don't think they'd do that though... they've never done it that way before, have they? Hm.
The pictures look real convincing though. How would somebody get the book and post pictures of it on the internet. Who would name their son Hugo?
The links don't work for me, where can you find this, it sounds very interesting, I would love to see what they posted, Thanks for any help.
OMG! should I read it? im scared. only 6 more days!!!!
They said 5 was 890, it was 870 and they said 6 would be 672 it was 652. They count all the chapter pages, blank pages, acknowledgement, info about the author etc. 759 is more accurate. And if it was 784, I'd be more skeptical than 759
the reason for the lack of pages is because there are always a certain amount of unnumbered pages for example when we first heard of the page count of HBP wasnt it like 672? but the actual numbered pages went up to 652 its because there is roughly 20 pages that have the table of contents, the about hte author /illustrator pages and so on and so forth so to me, it seems believalbe
Who would name their son 'Scorpius'? And, more importants, I would hope that Harry has sense enough not to name HIS son Albus Severus. I mean, I can certainly see naming MY son after someone I've loathed for six years, but that's just me...
Wow, now I really really REALLY can't wait for the book anymore...I was NOT born with patience and this just makes it worse! Can't wait! :
Yeah I don't see why Harry would every say anything alone the lines of, "Snape was a great man," much less name his son after him.
Hmmm... who is this Snape character?
Oh, what can I say, these are fun to read. I'll be interested to see if it's really in the book. Go ahead and read it, Tinkerbell, it doesn't give away anything. :)
I can't believe I read it...
Tease!!! It's a print tease! Is it Friday yet?
that's just not how publishing companies count pages. the page count only includes the pages in between the first page and last page of story. if you want further proof, just look up the page counts for the other six books. they all match the actual number of story in the books. that's also why the forward and table of contents, ect. are labeled with roman numerals and not actual numbers.
