The Guardian reveals opening of Deathly Hallows?
With extreme caution for lack of authenticity, we bring you this article from The Guardian's online website. It holds, what they say, is the opening to Deathly Hallows dated October 23rd, 2006.According to their site, this small portion can be seen in video from the upcoming JK Rowling documentary we told you about a few days ago.
We've posted it in the black area below in case it is removed from The Guardian's website. Highlight in between the arrows if you wish to read.
-->'Chapter One. The Dark Lord Ascending. The two men appeared out of nowhere, a few yards apart in the narrow, moonlit lane. For a second they stood quite still, wands pointing at each other's chests: then, recognising each other, they stowed their wands beneath their cloaks and set off, side by side, in the same direction.
"News?", asked the taller of the two.
"The best," replied Snape.'<--
Please remember that it is still unknown as to whether or not this is real. Interesting, nonetheless. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!
Emily's edit: I emailed Andrew saying I didn't think the excerpt was real. Here's why: There is a mixture of British/English grammar - the British spelling of "recognise" and the American use of "a few yards." There are also odd punctuation errors - a colon after "chest" and then ?", when only a question mark before the quotation mark would be used. Would Jo really make these errors? We'll find out soon.

Wow. Wow. Die, Snape. Can't wait till the real one come out.
Waiting for Friday! ^_^
I think Snape is talking to someone from the order. Yet i might be wrong, it could be too soon in the book to assume snape is good.
I find this whole situation quite amusing. ;)
Widdi2k7: What happens? WHAT HAPPENS? Harry doesn't die, right?
It's FAKE, people. I can tell that the scans have been doctored and that there are many contradictions everywhere.
This is REAL. Keep in mind, she could have changed around the wording, but the chapter title IS real. I saw a few scans of the book by accident on another site. A couple chapters WITH THE ARTWORK were shown. Of course, I clicked back as soon as I realized it was definitely a real spoiler. There was a store where the book got out early...
Peta's evidence looks pretty convincing, but I still doubt this is real. Either it's fake, or Jo must of been snorting something while writing DH.
*nods* Spleeny is right. The chapter title is real, and another 35 chapters follow with an epilogue. I have to just say that shippers of a certain ship will be using a certain chapter artwork for their avatars in some time to come.
I didn't look to see any of the pictures beyond the first one I saw. I read the first eight chapter titles, but now I forget most of them, and I'm glad. I learned my lesson with Snape Kills Dumbledore...I saw the scans, thought they were fake, laughed and told everyone I knew, then when I got the book, I opened it to that page just to make sure it wasn't there...and thought, "Oops."
maybe its real, maybe its not.....still doesn't tell us much. Why are people intent on finding out as much as they can anyways? And why, why, WHY does mugglenet keep posting stuff like this? Why can't mugglenet be a spoiler-free zone like the forums? It makes all the hard work we do in the forums to combat spoilers completely pointless. I might be completely wrong, but don't nearly ALL the members of CoS also come to Mugglenet everyday? You would think we could synchronize these things......ugh, stupid.
Come on, those were fake. A word should be capitalized in one of the chapter titles that isn't. If any mistake in the book is caught srely it would be in the names of the chapters.
Mmmm.... I don't think it's real... maybe it is... who knows... well JKR and a some more, but... guess we'll have to see on Friday night!
Honestly? Don't think it's real. Recognizing is spelled wrong. And it just doesn't seem enough JK to me.
James_Padfoot: Which ship? H/HR? Hr/R? HP/LL? H/G? N/L? D/P? HBP/DEATH? Tell me!!!!
wow would she really do this? i dont think its true
British people spell recognizing with an S, I think. The only reason those chapter titles may be wrong is the ones I read seem like things that could've been figured out from the other books and hints JKR is given...there didn't seem to be anything profoundly knew (like "Horcruxes" in HBP). Then again, I glanced too quickly to judge much, and there IS artwork.
For those talking about how some parts like un-JKR like, this is from October, revisions and edits have certainly been made since then, so if it's awkwardly written at all, I'm sure she's fixed it. :) I've gotten over my grumpiness at being spoiled, this isn't too huge. But I am not clicking on any chapter links, etc.
Nice. That means that those chapter titles that those tossers have been posting are false.
Recognizing isn't spelled wrong. That's the way it's spelled in England.
Oxford girl, note that Jo didn't do this. She wants us to be spoiler free. WE are the one being the idiots and spoiling ourselves and then headesking for our idiocy. DanielRadcliffeisSEXY, you'll see =) I don't want to spoil this book for anyone, and what I have already done to myself I am in the process of forgetting XD
meh. Not Jo's style.
For those saying JK wouldn't just introduce a character by name last name alone, I think we should take into consideration that this book doesn't take place a month after the last one, but rather, almost instantly. At least, that's what I've picked up from reading info about the book.
Artwork can be mimicked.
Just Keep an eye on JKRs rubbish bin on her site....if she denies it you no it crap if she doesnt then ...well....maybe...
James_Padfoot: Lemme guess. It's Ron and Hermione making out. Or it's Harry and Ginny making out! Which one?
Ugh, it is so late and I'm making typos of all sorts. Sigh. Anyway! It takes a pretty pathetic person to mimic the artwork just to bother some fans. That makes me hope those were real and that no one would take the time to throw us off so much!
Interesting. I cannot decide if it is fake...Oh, well, I can wait five more days. Or can I... :O Ya, I can.

Trust me, I read a 700+ version of Deathly Hallows which I deemed to be fake. It has absolutely no relation (chapter title wise) to the Deathly Hallows that is cited in this link. If someone would go through the motions of writing a 700+ fan fiction, I think someone could easily make those chapter art.
haha omg thats cool. dont know if its real or not..hm..but i couldnt resist i had to read it. and then someone copied and pasted it to me on msn so i couldnt hide from it haha cant believe how close it is :)
I saw some scans of the table of contents from the U.S. edition of DH online earlier today. i didn't read all of them because i didn't want to spoil it for myself. but whether you choose to believe me or not, i can confirm that the title of chapter one is indeed "the dark lord ascending," so this information is probably accurate. i'm not one of those spoiler-people who likes to ruin everything for everyone else, so i won't tell you any of the other chapter titles (although they're pretty easy to find on the internet if you look.) and besides, this kind of sounds like it's written by j.k. rowling, anyway. (my bet is that snape's talking to either voldemort or some other death eater.)
I'm going to feel bad after saying this if it was really true, but I don't think it was real. I dunno, just doesn't sound like her writing. Plus, I think they're smart enough to keep the cameras away from the book before it comes out.
I shouldn't read it, but I did. I shouldn't read the comments either, but I did. GAH! I need anything that will sustain me for five days. It's like being starved with an accessible piece of steak hanging inches away from your face. And yet, you cannot bite it! In any case, I think it's real, just not the finalized version.
James_Padfoot: Lemme guess. It's Ron and Hermione making out. Or it's Harry and Ginny making out! Which one?
I HAVE FOUND THE REASON THAT THE FOLLOWING SITE CANNOT BE REAL.--->http://simm ysim.livejournal. com/471641 .html
Ok, so I won't read it, and I haven't read any of the comments, but does anyone remember MuggleNet making a statement that they'd be spoiler-free. Despite putting a little security on this article, still, it's a potential spoiler; they said they'd be spoiler-free. I think, report about it, link to it, but don't actually put the spoiler on the web-site.
its not a real exerpt...J.K. would not have written "replied Snape". She would have had the other person say his name..or described him so we would know....though for the rest i do not know
I'm not going to read it until it's official. I won't read ANY possible spoilers, real or fake, unless released by JK Rowling. And that definitely includes this one! If she was going to give us text from DH wouldn't she have released it from her website like she usually does? It's all a bit fishy...
not the most revealing first few lines... i'm skeptical. it's funny, because i was just thinking about how on earth DH could start, and then i checked mugglenet... BAM. EXCITEMENT
Fishy indeed... Just remember to take every bit of spoiler with a grain of salt. This time next week, we'll be done with the book and it'll all be over.
This "trailer" that supposedly shows the manuscript, is it even out? Did the Guardian get to see it? It's all hazy.
THE SCANS ARE FAKE 1) Notice how the flaps of the book jacket are very sleek and shiny. This looks very much like lamination or photoshop. 2) The translucence of the pages aren't realistic. Some of the text is bleeding through the page WAY too much while some isn't showing through at all. 3) One photo of a page of chapter titles looks extremely fake. Towards the bottom both pages of the alleged book bend outwards. The shadow towards the center of the book also looks very fake. 4) The Epilogue is titled differently in the contents and in the actual chapter, and the book has 784 pages. The scanned epilogue ends well below that number. In extent, only a handful of characters appear in the epilogue, while Jo has said that we will learn about a lot of the survivors. 5) The page after the contents page should be a page of harlequin pattern. This page is apparently missing in the scans. 6) Some of the scans show the back cover of the book behind the pages while others only show the pages. This clearly means that they were photoshopped. There are MANY other facts that point to these scans being fake. The first chapter may be authentic, but I would SERIOUSLY take these alleged spoilers with a grain (or an entire shaker) of salt.
I don't think the link is real, if you had the misfortune of looking at the scans notice a few things: The color tone indicates that these pages were scanned on a black and white copier, however the color of the jacket is bright and vivid. Questionable. Also, from what I've seen of the alleged chapter titles there are at least 2 character names that we've NEVER seen and if I'm not mistaken JKR stated that we wouldn't be meeting any new characters. I hope to goodness this isn't real. I wouldn't have a reason to believe it myself if it weren't for the danged artwork.
I'm so convinced all those scans are real oh my goodness i need the flash thingy they use in Men in Black now. D:
You never know, this could be real. After all, we did get a spoiler for Order of the Phoenix remember? And that was weeks or months before the release. BUT one thing that makes me skeptical is this: Instead of Snape replying "The best", wouldnt he have replied "The best, my lord". If he is evil then he would address Voldemort (if that is Voldemort in the excerpt) as my lord or whatever the death eaters call him, AND if he's good then he would do it anyway, as he would be faking being one of his followers. Does that make sense? Cant wait for the book!
WOW. I dunno if I should believe or not believe. Anyone could have wrote that, it just doesn't, as others have stated, seem like JO's style. If it is indeed a passage from DH, I cannot wait to read more. If not, which I am leaning towards, the person who wrote it, has no life.
It's so painfully obvious it's fake. In the first chapter she never goes by someones last name. There is always someowhat of a small introduction.
I "did the math" but that doesn't change the fact that the pictures I saw were pretty convincing, and only 4 or 5 pages long, with a pretty clear cut ending to the epilogue. Which is why I really hope the pictures I saw were wrong - if someone can prove the epilogue is actually more than 4 pages, everything else was a lie too and I can sleep easy.
Wheres_my_Snare gets bonus points from Pirate. The Sleuth of the Day title goes to you! Some bloke got the title yesterday for discovering an unitalicized spell in a scanned page, thus proving it to be a fake.
