Scholastic gets subpoena to identify spoiler
The LA Times is reporting that the US Harry Potter publisher obtained a subpoena to learn the identity of a user who allegedly posted copies of Deathly Hallows on a California website.Scholastic said in a court filing Monday that "materials hosted on Photobucket.com's system" contain materials that infringe copyrights owned by Scholastic and J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books. Photobucket.com, a News Corp. unit, is a website for sharing photos and videos on social networks such as MySpace.
The subpoena was sent to Gaia Interactive Inc. in San Jose seeking the identity of a user on gaiaonline.com, a social network, according to the filing in San Francisco federal court.
Gaia complied with the subpoena, removed the material and temporarily banned the user from the site, said Gaia spokesman Bill Danon.

Thank you for that. Mike
Voldykins-it's fake. not the real book. We have a "Harry Potter" class at West college of GA here..(It's a philosophy, mythology, literary class) and they have had scholars look at the text-it is not in the same writing style as some of her others-not to say some of the stuff wasn't derived from the original texts, but the "spoilers" that were originally posted were not based on any validity from the books. Also, if you remember when Myspace had the black curtain screening of the movie 3 weeks ago, there was also another "Legit" group of spoilers that was out that people had already made Tshirts into (Cafepress-hp spoilers if you want to see what those are) which also turned out to be BS....i think we are all fine. :)
I'll post this again for those who didn't see...****NO SPOILERS IN THIS POST**** ****NO SPOILERS IN THIS POST ****VERY IMPORTANT!! LEAKS ARE A FAKE**** Too bad MTV News has already confirmed that these are all FAKE! They did some kind of synopsis and have a lot of evidence to prove that they ARE FAKE!! 1. There are multiple different version of the book out there that all claim to be "true" or instance, calls chapter 10 "Kreacher's Tale," while another table of contents calls the same chapter "The Reflection in the Mirror." Some who claim to have one version of the book have posted recaps, or spoilers, of what's to come in book seven — with scans offered as proof. But even within that, there are inconsistencies, with people claiming Ron and/or Ginny Weasley die alongside a scan of an "epilogue" that reveals that both Ron and Ginny live happily ever after. 2. Problems with the transparency of the pages and how each page is different which doesn't seem to add up. 3. Errors in spelling and grammar-which for the most anticipated book of all time, should be at a minimum. ****AND TO WRAP THIS WHOLE THING UP-THE ONE THING EVERYONE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR!!!**** Still, while not saying whether the leaks are indeed fakes, "Potter" publisher Scholastic obtained a subpoena on Monday to learn the identity of a user who posted copies on a social-networking site in California. Some fans looked at this as proof that the leaks were real, but a spokesman from Scholastic explained to MTV News that the subpoena was sought because "any material from or derived from the books is a copyright infringement." THAT means-that if I were to make my own ending to the potter series and used the copyrighted characters and posted it...i could get in trouble-like the person from California is- for USING the characters and titles of copyrighted material. **Read on my fellow Potter Fans. For the spoilers are NOT real. We will know the real truth, and ending, this Saturday morning.
Now that we have decided that it is a fake, what should I do about these nice Nigerian gentlemen that keep offering to send me money. You see, one of the guys had a father who was a colonel in the army... :) :) :) Mike
so voldykins you found the book "this morning" and finished it a "couple hours ago?" Not possible. sorry.
can we stop being rascist on here, that isn't very cheesecakish....and it's really tacky...
mtv news article that states all spoilers that are leaked out on the internet are fake and provides evidence... http://www.mtv.com /news /articles/ 1564941 /20070717/id_0.jhtml
What do you mean 'not possible'? I read insanely fast. It took about seven or eight hours, that seems about right. And the one I read WAS real. They were pictures that someone took of the book, page by page.
BELLATRIX KILLS RON, NEVILLE KILLS BELLA, VOLDY KILLS SNAPE, PERCY AND LUPIN DIE, HARRY KILLS VOLDEMORT! The MTV article proves nothing. Levine claims for the scans to "probably" be fake. And yes, there ARE other fake "scans" out there, but not all of them have a publisher's page with a legit ISBN number, do they?
OMG! I can't believe that was a real leak! I play on Gaia and someone posted a link to the spolier images in the forum I usually chat in. I reported the topic because it was in the wrong forum (he had posted the link in the forum dedicated to discussion of the site's story plot line). I'm so glad I didn't actually read it! Oh, though I might mention that many Gaia users are offended by them being compared to Myspace.com.
It's not impossible for Voldykins to have finished the book in 10 or 12 hours. I finished GOF, OOTP, and HBP the first day they were released. Got my copies from Fed-EX mid morning to noon. I was done by midnite-1am. SS/PS, COS, and POA I read in only a few hours, they were shorter.
Yep, exactly. And it was definitely J.K.'s writing style. Plus, it couldn't have been fake, because it was one hell of an amazing book. ;-D
BELLATRIX KILLS RON, NEVILLE KILLS BELLA, VOLDY KILLS SNAPE, PERCY AND LUPIN DIE, HARRY KILLS VOLDEMORT!
yeah but you can do anything these days on the computer, cmon people, you cant believe everything you see on the internet. jerkyhole why are you so determined to ruin this for so many people?? you really must suck at life.
yeah, jerkyhole, well, my brother read the one u read prob. seeing he said he read scans with ISBN number crap, and my dad, who is head of a computer software program said those scans are partly true and partly false because somepeople tampered with a part of the book....so F U....u crazy a hole
voldykins where is the link to what you read?
First, I have to confess that I gave in. I should have been sorted into Slytherin! But then again, when has Harry ever not given into his curiousity, right? Sure, that makes me feel better. Anyway, I will write no spoilers here, but I believe MTV. I did a little "recon" and have come to the conclusion that it is fan fiction. Not only because of the pixelations (They got worse as the book went on and I didn't read anything about the MTV article until after I'd already read a good portion of it), but other things, too. Pretty darn good fan fiction at first, but I realized as I got deeper into it, it was starting to bore me because it wasn't getting to the point, like a lot of fan fiction that I have read (sorry to offend anyone!) - When has JKR ever done that? She builds you up, but keeps you moving to an ending. Too much "old home week" stuff - all kinds of characters were jumping in and out of the plot. And some of the background stuff was starting to sound too made up, not something that JKR would do. Also, even the main characters sometimes seemed a little OOC. I think most of you, if you read it, would agree. As such, I've given up on finishing it and will simply wait until Saturday like everybody else.
well, we have been researching it all day and since most everyone on here disagrees-the book was a great photoshop...that's about it. There is no way to read 700 pages in 8 hours..lol. well im guessing even if you're "above avg speed reader" it's still only about 200wpm... :) That would equal almost 18 hours of reading...since the books usually have around 215K words-(or so they say..) But, if you read the whole "book..." then you will see the contradictions that it poses in it's text.. (I read some of them as well for class purposes today as well-grammatically a lot of them are a mess.)
and people, don't u get it, some people might have the real scans, but they r copying the illustrations onto random places, which some websites are actually saying might be true.....i can't believe no one thought of that....CHEESECAKE
soccerboi23: http://download289 .mediafire.com/czmfibdtxx ng /ad3x20ugn13/hp7 .pdf (take out spaces) It was here, but they deleted the file. I saw a couple places with this file this morning, but I think they were all removed for copyright reasons, hmm. =-/ Woah, time for me to go to bed! -runs off-
Wait, you mean somebody actually wrote 750 pages? Wow, they have more time on their hands than I do. jerkyhole is right in that, technically, the MTV article doesn't "prove" anything. But the fact that he keeps repeating himself strikes me that he's just a guy who wants attention. Mike
I'm a spoilsport, I downloaded it and read it. Big deal. I'm still going to be going to the bookstore on the weekend to pick up my pre-ordered copy. To be honest though, I wasn't that impressed. I'd probably rank it 3rd out of the 7 books. Won't post spoilers, I'm not that cruel. But yeah, despite being a good read, I was still disappointed.
and because they only released the leaks in time gaps, leads me to believe something isn't right b/c even my bro says their are grammatical errors and HUGE contradictions......suspi cious, so like i said, parts might be true, but ALOT isn't
http://content.ytmnd.com/ content/7/d/1/7d178d43915 24e665bdfc8c087f332f7.jpg go to this link if u support anti spoiler campaigns
i dont know-someone has too much time on their hands.. ha. :) Aka me right now sitting here still thinking about this! grrr..it's fake. If you did read the "whole thing" by now---it will depend on which version you read vs what the outcome/story was...soo, both can't be true or DH..We saved the scans- once someone has the actual book-( even if it's before friday..) we can match them up and see if it really was leaked. From what i've learned from Scholastic--it just doesn't seem to match up..(Im learning this through my cousin though--so it's second hand.)
The copy on the net with photo's of every page is the one I read. And having read ALOT of fanfiction in my time, it's far too well written, far too well formatted, far too well illustrated and correlates well with what JKR herself has said about the book for me to believe that it's fanfiction.
soccerboi23 ""any material from or derived from the books is a copyright infringement." THAT means-that if I were to make my own ending to the potter series and used the copyrighted characters and posted it...i could get in trouble-like the person from California is- for USING the characters and titles of copyrighted material. " So, my question is how is doing that any different than fanfiction? Is fanfiction a copyright infringement? Or is the intent to pass it off as canon that makes it illegal? I'm such an impatient person. Last book I ruined it by looking at the spoilers. I'm trying REALLY hard to make it the rest of the week because I DO NOT want to find out. Ugh.
snapeswench - I wouldn't go by how long it took anyone to read. I read HBP in about 9 hours, so it may be possible that someone reads faster than I do (DOUBT IT! HA HA!). Anyway, I think that the MTV article pointed out things that I started to notice (like the pixelations) and I that about does it for me. I didn't doubt the authenticity at first since it was the whole book. But someone totally could have written it, because they could have started their own fan fiction right after HBP came out, then made changes to it along the way to bring in some of the theories that were out there, and boom, you have your story. Totally possible. And yes, they would have had to have a lot of time on their hands. But we will know for sure on Saturday!
if you look at the scans--look at the edges (They are taped and worn..) There aren't a lot of grammatical errors in the previous books..For instance on page 73 ( i see 2 punctuation errors as well as a capitalization error just at the bottom.)
Somebody mentioned that the ISBN number is legit... that proves NOTHING. Wikipedia already has the ISBN numbers listed on their page and has for quite some time as far as I can tell. So it is ENTIRELY WITHIN THE REALM OF POSSIBILITY that the people behind this got hold of the ISBN and put it in to get that extra bit of authenticity.
OMG!!! i read that website.. crap.. i really hopped that those wernt spoilers... im glad they caught him.. god im soooo freakin pissed... well this suks!! why do people want 2 spoil it for everyone!!! geez!
http://www.mtv.com/news/a rticles/1564941/20070717/ index.jhtml there is the link for everyone who wants to see what MTV found...(No spoilers) No, I agree-but it's not a completed book as well..it ends 40 pages short and there aren't 40 pages of extra content not numbered within the books..that's never happened before.
can someone please post a link to the mtv article that confirms this is a fake leak? i downloaded the first half of the book and had a complete heart attack after reading a random page because it seemed to follow jkr's style quite closely. i haven't read any of the other pages and i've deleted the entire directory because i actually feel UNCLEAN reading the last book in this way [even if it is a fake] when i've been waiting 8 years to find out how the series ends.
mtv article http://www.mtv .com / news /articles/1564941/2007071 7/index.jhtml NO SPOILERS on this link. promise!!
moonal: i posted it right above you.
three more days until we know for certain.... can't wait!
Hopefully Hedwig won't die!!
hey people! anyone i know here? any cheesecakeians?
Well I'm here. I don't think I am a cheesecakeian, but I am a non spoiler!!!!!
Gaia isn't the only site. I was told of another today (I can't remember the name) that had pictures of every single page of the book. I didn't visit it, though. It's not the same as having the book in your hands and reading it. I just hope no one spoils it at the midnight party. If anyone does, I swear to God I'm going to grab the Order of the Phoenix from a shelf and give them a concussion.
tonks1975---well maybe you can become one! i will have to consult the other cheesecakeians though.
I beleive that he should rot in jail for the rest of his life for this 0_0. But honestly he did SPOIL the book for anyone... He did not scream out parts of the book, or pull their eyelids open and force them to read it... and its not exactly spoiling if you read the entire thing... Yea he should be punished but i mean come one people.
how bout we all stop fighting and wait till friday midnight to see its real?? hm? i mean its better then sitting here and saying if its real or not. but im just saying it here, the book that was leaked indeed, they had te pics. but what i thought about is the person could have rpobably have had only the pics and then just did the typing themselves. and it isnt that hard to make it if they started from before. and i think the only REAL pages were the ones attached to pics, and im not even to sure of that. i think we sould all shake hands and when friday omes by, whoevers right yell I TOLD YOU SO!! agreed?
The copy I got has photos of EVERY page of the book. I got my copy from torrents. So I don't know about what other copy you guys are talking about. And like hespitinmysoup just said, nobody forced anybody to download the images.
"http://www.mtv.com/news/ a rticles/1564941/20070717/ index.jhtml there is the link for everyone who wants to see what MTV found...(No spoilers) No, I agree-but it's not a completed book as well..it ends 40 pages short and there aren't 40 pages of extra content not numbered within the books..that's never happened before." Actually...th e scanned book ends on page 759. That makes 25 pages short. And if you go and find your Book 6 hardcover, you will see that it ends on page 652, 20 pages short of its listed 672 (check amazon.com if you don't believe me). If you count up all the white pages bound, book 6 adds up to 672, and the scanned book 7 ends with 784 pages. Both equal to their listed page totals. Not trying to burst your bubble, but I feel like those that rightly do not want the spoilers to win may not have as strong a case as it seems. Also, if you look up almost any scan of text, unless it has an incredibly high resolution, there will always be those pixel-fuzzy things outlining them.
i agree with harry_p_7. i am tired of seeing all these comments with spoilers and all these comments of people getting mad at other people for spoiling it. and then there is a bunch of namecalling and a some cussing and chaos goes on. i think we all need a break and some time to talk peacefully.anyone agree with me here?
o.O There's a clear spoiler warning at the top of the page. If people don't want to be spoiled, then maybe they should just pay attention to that warning.
Here is what the NYTimes has to say: http://www.nyti mes.com/2007/07/18/us/18p otter.html?hp
*stands up* i agree wwith moonshine completely~!~ and even though it says that, does that mean ITS OK to post spoilers??!?!??! no it means no such thing so everyone shut ur mouth on spoilers, and lets all shut it on this topic. this has been going on for 3 days... can u believe it?!?!?!
