NY Times posts early review of DH
After receiving an early copy of Deathly Hallows from an unnamed bookstore, the New York Times has posted a review of the book which also contains a few plot details.UPDATE: In response, JK Rowling has spoken out about this New York Times review and numerous others:
"I am staggered that American newspapers have decided to publish purported spoilers in the form of reviews in complete disregard of the wishes of literally millions of readers, particularly children, who wanted to reach Harry’s final destination by themselves, in their own time. I am incredibly grateful to all those newspapers, booksellers and others who have chosen not to attempt to spoil Harry’s last adventure for fans."Bloomsbury has also addressed this concern:
The release date and time embargo of 00.01AM BST on Saturday July 21st is being enforced unflinchingly and without exception by the publishers. We confirm that all Bloomsbury’s customers in 93 countries worldwide are robustly supporting this embargo time to ensure secrecy for the children and adult readers of Harry Potter.Read the entire press release:
PRESS RELEASE:
Bloomsbury Publishing, originating publisher of Harry Potter, was extremely dismayed to learn last night about early sales in America of a small number of copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows prior to the UK, US and worldwide embargo time agreed with retailers, suppliers, and all third parties involved of 00.01AM British Summer Time on Saturday July 21st 2007.
We are aware of some speculation in the media that internet “spoilers” purporting to be extracts from the book have come from the few early copies sold. We confirm that this is not true as is clear from the press release of July 18th issued by Scholastic Inc, the US publisher of Harry Potter. The “spoilers” remain unauthenticated.

We confirm that all Bloomsbury’s customers in 93 countries worldwide are robustly supporting this embargo time to ensure secrecy for the children and adult readers of Harry Potter.
We would like to thank our customers and suppliers again for their full support given in so many different ways. We would also like to thank the worldwide media for their own observance of, and strict policing of, the embargo to preserve the secrecy of the plot for the readers of Harry Potter.

DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY: Um, you just wrote that you are from Boston - I believe that qualifies you as being from MA... Furthermore, I wouldn't brag you're from MA. I go to college there and couldn't WAIT to come back to NY when term ended. Also, copying and pasting your original post every 3 minutes does not make anyone care any more about what you have to say.
ok - I admit it. I found what seems to be a legit community board that is compiling spoiler info. I was skeptical reading it yesterday, but after seeing this NYT review and the one published in the Baltimore Sun, I have to say that much of the spoiler info I have read is true. Both reviews discuss what "Deathly Hallows" means and I have to say that I don't recall anyone or any discussions having pegged it. Brilliant on behalf of Jo! All I have to say is that I think JKR has completed her anthology in the only way she could have - and it is great. Bring on the 21st and the after-discussions!
Well, I have to say that I read the supposed scans of the epilogue, but not this. I just want to know if they match up, for anyone has read both. not any details just a yes or no, please. :]
Why was this article posted on Mugglenet? I have deeply appreciated Mugglenet's seriousness on not posting spoilers and/or links to articles which contain spoilers. I refuse to read this article because it will only temp me to look for more spoilers elsewhere. I'm severely disappointed in Mugglenet.
The review tells nearly nothing of DH. It's basically seems like the critic was beating around the bush and decided, instead, to talk about 1-6. Not to say there's some spoilers in there, because there are. So don't read it if you want the book to be completely 100% unspoiled and full of delightful surprises. I'm just saying that a lot of the article is what we already know (or at least thought/speculated).
Gaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!!! MUST....NOT...READ....MUS T...RESIST....GRAVITATION AL PULL OF MY COMPUTER MOUSE!!!!! -dies-
It's so hard for me NOT to click that link and read the article...must...exit...m ugglenet...before temption...beats me...
Bah. I read it and so what. They didn't reveal anything, really. There was nothing in there that I haven't expected to happen in Book 7, just from what I've read in Books 1-6. It's been building for the last 6 books.
SPOILERS deathly hallows is a pizza co, voldy turns out to have never killed ne1 and it was all a HUGE joke on harry, AK never existed and crucio just makes the sufferer think about the worst thing in the world: meeting jerkyhole who turns out to have been a figment of our imaginations. but harry is so mad at evry1 in the world he plants 5billion nukes in the earths core and evrything blows up*. *=This is a lie.
MUST...........RESIST.... ......URGE............TO. ........LOOK..........AHH HH
Ok, mugglenet has posted several spoilers. But they make it so that its YOUR choice to read it or not. They just dont put it in white print so that its easy to read. Stop freaking out on mugglenet. Its just doing its job as a Harry Potter news site. Its not like they have the scans of the epilouge in the gallery or anything...
IS THERE ANY WAY TO LOG OUT OF MUGGLENET?!
Worst idea since this year's April Fools prank on Mugglenet.......Truly this is a dumb mistake, one of the biggest mistakes of 2007, along with rating the Simpsons Movie PG-13 for crude humor (and nothing else), releasing Paris Hilton from jail, and letting Hillary Clinton run for president. I hate the New York Times anyway. The only good thing about them is their movie sections. They have poster-sized color ads for the movies! I just don't like SOME New Yorkers, especially Hillary Clinton and Derek Jeter, the stupid b***hes. "One of the plot’s key turning points concerns Harry’s decision whether to continue looking for the Horcruxes — the mission assigned to him by the late Dumbledore — or whether to pursue, instead, three magical objects known as the Hallows, which are said to make their possessor the master of Death." Yeah, go suck on a cauldron cake, you spoilin' little Bronx pigs. Especially you, Derek Jeter and Hillary Clinton. You make my life miserable as hell!
what i still don't understand is why Jim Dale said there was a surprise ending There wasn't. At all. In any way, shape, or form.
That is SO not cool! The fact that the New York Times reported this (a very important and influential newspaper, to say the very least!) really is very saddening. J.K.R. specifically asked the media and the public not to spoil the story before the book comes out! So many fans have been waiting FOR SO LONG. And let's not forget Jo -- think about how she must feel; after spending such a large part of her life writing these books, think about how important they are to her. I'm betting that J.K.R.'s lawyers are going to sue the people involved in the Times' release of this review -- and I would be glad to support the suing. Personally, I think I'll turn my back on the spoilers, though they may be evilly tempting -- I'd rather enjoy the amazing rush of emotion as I read the whole story for MYSELF. And, Jo, if you're reading this, THANK YOU for all the wonderful plot lines of the past six books you've given to us! We sincerely hope that the seventh plot line won't be spoiled for everyone, although, thanks to the Times, that wish is severely damaged. You know, I think I'd rather be willing to hope that the Times acts, for once, like the Daily Prophet -- and that the plot which it has spoiled is not fact, but fiction.
This is absolutely horrifying. I can't believe that a trusted news paper like the New York Times would do such a thing! So far I have been able to keep myself away from the major spoilers, however tempting they were. But I don't think I'll have any problems avoiding this one; I am APPALLED. Especially since this is real, not some well-written fake one from a website. This is the real deal. How could they do this to JKR and all of those fans who don't want to be spoiled? I hope they lose a lot of business from this scandal.
This is absolutely ridiculous that the New York Times would write up a review two days before the release! I just don't understand why they couldn't have waiting even for the 21st to put it out there!! I'm so angry right now...UGH! But, of course, I didn't read it and refuse to read any spoilers. I actually like that Mugglenet posted it because I go to the New York Times website almost daily so I'm glad I saw it here first so I was warned beforehand without the risk of actually reading the spoilers whereas if I logged onto the NY Times first it would have all been there without my knowing, you know what I mean? I'm just so angry...absolutely horrified.
Okay. I read it. I have failed the tests of will power and character, but I have to say none of it really surprised me. So I'm okay with it. *sigh* I wish I didn't read it though. Oh well. It'll all be okay, I guess.
Hey everyone- I've never posted in the comments before so if I do something wrong please forgive me. I'm commenting because I think we should all email the NY Times editor and tell them what we think of them posting an early review. I already sent a letter to the editor. There's a link to do so on the NY Times website. ps- someone may have already suggested this- I did not read previous comments just in case they contained spoilers. 3 more days! pps: Just last week the NY times criticized other papers for releasing early reviews of movies- this is certainly more egregious.
I debated if i was going to read it or not but ended up reading it. It does NOT give away anything you could have not guessed. It does NOT say who dies. If you want to know what the title refers to read it other than that it gives NOTHING away.
The New York Times is a ho-diddy :/ They couldn't wait a COUPLE of days? They know how much this means to quite a lot of people... I don't know why they bother with all of the security if it's going to be this EASY to find out what happens... Well, anyways, I'm not reading XD
WHAT HAS THIS WORLD GONE TO........SPOILERS RAMPANT CHEAP NASTY LYING BOOKSTORES BREACHING THE EMBARGO..........YAYE GO BOOKS A MILLION YOU ARE THROWING MY MOST WAITED AND BELOVED HP PARTY EVER AND YOU HOLD MY BOOK IN IT'S NICE COZY BOX(YELLS AT TOP OF LUNGS WITH EXCITEMENT)......."WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST BE SPOILER FREE AND QUIT RUINING ALL OF THIS WONDERFUL HP HISTORY."
READ IT! all it says is what the hallows are and approx how many characters die and also what the last few chapters are like to read. FAR FROM A SPOILER!!!
i hope jk rowling sues the balt. sun and the new york times...the newspaper i always read for the movie reviews.......i just can't believe they did this...i mean...and putting it on the front page, just tempting u to read...and i feel bad for letting in to both of the newspapers...but they don't give the other plot lines away, which are the ones i love.....anyway, i wish i could sue them myself...
so sorry to be off topic, but is there any way to LOG OUT of mugglenet?!
For people wanting to read the NYT article but don't want to be spoiled too badly, the article does not specifically mention anyone who dies, what the Horcruxes are, or how the story ends. The main spoiler it does give is what "Deathly Hallows" means, but it focuses more on JKR's achievements as an author than the plot of the book.
Imo, it's just stuff we know: the first paragraph sums up Harry's losses thus far, and the second paragraph says that Dumbledore told him to go Horcrux hunting. No spoilers here, imho.
ahhh it's taking everything to not read it!
i can't believe that the NY Times would print a review so close to the book release..espceially after fans have been waiting 10 years to find out the end of this story. why would they want to ruin all that excitment for people!? i just think its horrible. and i refuse to read it or anything else that talks about the last book. i want to read it and find out on my own!!!
People who said they hate the New York Times because of this: Howza bout we start an angry mob protesting why the NYT shouldn't of published a review yet! YAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!! *goes off to get pitchfork and torch out of garage* People who want to join the Mob of Spoiler-Hating Pottheads, say aye!
wow, i'm disappointed in the new york times... it's one thing to get the book from some bookstore. if they have the book, whatever. the store would just get in trouble. but the writer of the review couldn't wait for three freaking days?!?!?! i'm seriously staying off the internet until the 21st.
you people sure are something... i can say that.... what on earth does it matter if you read the leaked book now or if you read it after it's release 1 or 2 days from now? it's the same book isnt it? will the story be better if you read it after it's official release? sorry but thats just dumb.... 8-/ and btw... what do you know.... those FAKE pics of the book were actually real... imagine that....
Oh man it is getting so hard to avoid all these stupid spoilers. I've gone too long to read a stupid review before the book comes out and ruin everything. I'm going to be soooo mad if someone tells me anything about the book before I get the chance to read it. No media or anything for me untill Saturday then I'm going to lock myself in my room and read and read.
I am an editor at a mid-sized newspaper and had to read the review for an item we're running tomorrow about early reviews and spoilers. I don't think the review was spoilery at all -- it revealed a few plot points, but the reviewer seemed to be very careful not to reveal the ending or anything too huge. I'm putting myself into media lockdown mode until I finish the book, yet I did not feel like the NYT ruined anything for me. I thought the review was tastefully done. And as a newspaper journalist, I believe a newspaper has a right to post a review of a book before it's released. HP should be no exception.
I can't believe anyone would do this and I can not believe mugglenet is posting all these spoiler news! I thought they said they were going to try to make their site spoiler free and here they are reporting a very real spoiler. I have not read it and I am trying really really hard not to!!! Now my fiance' is running around saying I know what Hallows means now and teasing me with it!! grrr I can actually feel my self control slipping!! HELP!!!!!! oh no stop! can't......read......book .......if ....i do that!! 2 more days of torture!!!
I agree with monicag..I think we should all email into NYTimes and give them a piece of our minds! I know I am!
Everyone should just chill out. NYT having the review out early, yes it's a pity. But what do you expect from people in our world today? Abide by the rules when they could be making an extra buck by having this article (though I doubt there will be any gain in this for NYT). You don't have to read it. It's nothing new, and frankly I'm surprised they didn't add more detail to the article.
so tempting but omgsh omgsh omgsh NOT READING NOT READING NOT READINGGG
Ive been doing really well at not going to any sites that have spoilers and i finally gave into this one. i must say that i am extremely annoyed at the fact it was even posted as a link. I dont know if i trust the spoiler, but it makes me wonder about the outcome of the book still. I think that i will just read the book and find out myself.
Please, i beg of you, can anyone confirm 100% if the epilogue is fake or real. I mean someone had to have accidentally gotten thier copy due to deepdiscounts.com. Please!

i am more mad at the Balt. Sun for lying in their review about not giving stuff away...................AH HHHHHHHHHHHHHh...sooooo mad!!!
While I agree that they should have held the review at least until Friday night, this does confirm one thing: the copy posted on the internet (the photographed pages) is the Real Deal. The epilogue that got passed around? Real Deal (as it was also in the photographed pages). The NYT review is based on a book bought in a NYC store. While the reviewer did a very good job of not giving much away, what is said exactly matches the photographed book. The good news? It's a glowing review from a major publication, and, in confirming to me that what I read WAS the book, I can definitely say that you guys are in for a humdinger of a read. :)
why would you even post something that needed to be highlighted? a spoiler is a spoiler.... thought mugglenet was safe from that...
temptation....omg...i want to know sooo bad....but i can't, i can't! its less than two days away! but still, just having the link SITTING there; i want o read it...i want to know what happens... im going crazy! but nonononono, I CANT READ IT! i'll hold out. but god, i wish people would stop with all the spoilers. its just not fair. :/
IS THERE ANY WAY TO LOG OUT OF MUGGLENET?! PLEASE TELL ME!!
I am disgusted with New York Times for this. I sent them an email telling them exactly what I thought of this behavior.
ugggh i have a quick yes or no question, does this mean that the borders video guy was right? please tell me! im so mad b/c thats really the only spoiler ive seen!
