NY Times posts early review of DH
After receiving an early copy of Deathly Hallows from an unnamed bookstore, the New York Times has posted a review of the book which also contains a few plot details.UPDATE: In response, JK Rowling has spoken out about this New York Times review and numerous others:
"I am staggered that American newspapers have decided to publish purported spoilers in the form of reviews in complete disregard of the wishes of literally millions of readers, particularly children, who wanted to reach Harry’s final destination by themselves, in their own time. I am incredibly grateful to all those newspapers, booksellers and others who have chosen not to attempt to spoil Harry’s last adventure for fans."Bloomsbury has also addressed this concern:
The release date and time embargo of 00.01AM BST on Saturday July 21st is being enforced unflinchingly and without exception by the publishers. We confirm that all Bloomsbury’s customers in 93 countries worldwide are robustly supporting this embargo time to ensure secrecy for the children and adult readers of Harry Potter.Read the entire press release:
PRESS RELEASE:
Bloomsbury Publishing, originating publisher of Harry Potter, was extremely dismayed to learn last night about early sales in America of a small number of copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows prior to the UK, US and worldwide embargo time agreed with retailers, suppliers, and all third parties involved of 00.01AM British Summer Time on Saturday July 21st 2007.
We are aware of some speculation in the media that internet “spoilers” purporting to be extracts from the book have come from the few early copies sold. We confirm that this is not true as is clear from the press release of July 18th issued by Scholastic Inc, the US publisher of Harry Potter. The “spoilers” remain unauthenticated.

We confirm that all Bloomsbury’s customers in 93 countries worldwide are robustly supporting this embargo time to ensure secrecy for the children and adult readers of Harry Potter.
We would like to thank our customers and suppliers again for their full support given in so many different ways. We would also like to thank the worldwide media for their own observance of, and strict policing of, the embargo to preserve the secrecy of the plot for the readers of Harry Potter.

I also want to say that we shouldn't beat up MuggleNet for posting this. There are some fans out there that want to get the "heads up" on DH and want to read these kinds of things; MuggleNet has to cater to a vast amount of fans here, they can't please everyone. If you read it, it's your own fault for spoiling yourself, not MuggleNet's. I like monicag's idea of e-mailing the editor. Right now I'm too tired (and horrified!), but maybe tomorrow if I still haven't calmed down.
People who said they hate the New York Times because of this: Howza bout we start an angry mob protesting why the NYT shouldn't of published a review yet! NO WAY IN HELL AM I READING THAT!!!!!!!!!
So its the New York Times that takes the cake for being complete jerks about this spoiler stuff. Very irresponsible. Bill O'Reilly right about something! Its as if Snape is handing out sweets!
yeah, i think the borders spoil is for real.......
i agree with MrsAlanRickman, newspapers can print anything and it doesnt tell us who dies, but what the deathly hallows are thats all.
i cannot believe the the freaking new york times did this!!!i thought they were better than posting this on their site!!! for shame!!! good thing i didn't read the article or else i would of jumped off the brooklyn bridge. ONLY 2 MORE DAYS, WE CAN DO THIS!!!
F*ck this, New York Times is nothing but a tabloid paper in sheep's clothing.
Okay the NYTimes article does contain a few spoilers but nothing to point of telling us who dies. Just basically what the Deathly Hallows are. Kind of a surprise when I read it . . . it's just that I'm even more eager to get my hands on the book and find out how these 'things' come into play. HOWEVER, the Baltimore Sun article has saddened me . . . DO NOT READ THE LAST LINE. In a way it has angered me because it reveals Harry's 'fate' . . . and it isn't the one I had expected. Although it was written in a manner that is vague and doesn't exactly say he dies or lives, I am upset over the prospect of the Epilogue. I am just crossing my fingers and hoping that there isn't an Albus Severus in the last chapter! The NYTimes article confirms my belief on the 'character that does magic late in life' which I expected 100%
Everyone freaking out that they are tempted to read and the book will be ruined for you if you do, don't worry. I wouldn;t bother to read it, but if you do, it's won't ruin anything If you want to know what the article is about, just think long and carefully about what logically you would expect to happen in Book 7. About all that article does is confirm that things you'd expect to happen in Book 7 DO happen in Book 7. It's nothing more than confirmation of stuff we've been hearing for years about Book 7. Some of it stuff from JKR herself. People die, Voldie and his followers are evil , out making trouble for all they are worth, and poor Harry is the one who has to sort it all out, and it's not an easy task he has.
i'd really like for someone to tell me how to log out...
FUC* THE NY TIMES I went to there website before the post and fuc*ing read it not bothering to look at title . Fuc* THE NY TIMES WAIT TIL IT COMES OUT U FAT SACKS OF SH!T [at NYTimes not mugglenet]
I refuse, i refuse, i refuse. As much as I would like to, i'd want to learn what happens by myself. ]: Grrrr. Why the temptation? C'mon, mugglenet.
MrsAlanRickman posted: "I believe a newspaper has a right to post a review of a book before it's released. HP should be no exception."...........I agree. Do I remember correctly that reviewers normally DO get copies of books before release so that they can read them and publish a review on the brink of publication, but Scholastic specifically announced that this wouldn't be happening for HP7? MOST authors/publishers want this to happen--it's how they get publicity. Scholastic basically told the media "Tough" and didn't do what publishers normally do. They essentially drew a line in the sand and issued a challenge.
It just made me more excited, is all. =P
its my luck that the only spoiler i read has to be the one thats real, those borders ppl suck. You would think that the security would be at its highest with this book b/c its the last one but i guess not i mean they are just handing it to the nyt, shouldn't they have to wait too? grrrrrrr [/rant]
The borders one is real the photos r not .So if you havent seen the borders one yet get out now.!!!!!!!!!!
I just want to put my two cents in and say I'm so freakin' mad at the weanies in charge of security at Scholastic!!!! How could they let this happen???? I'm so mad at all the leaks!!! I hope heads are rolling and people are getting fired.
I'm so excited, but at now I know what the Hallows are... : (
It was a good review and reallly didn't have "spoilers" in it. It didn't give away much more than we fans already knew from interviews, comments from JKR, etc. I almost didn't read it for fear of spoilers, but didn't really find any. Talks about JKRs writing style and how she has fashioned a world with intense detail. Compared her to JKT, Dickens, etc. Still, be careful if you really want to stay "pure". Like I said, I didn't find much more than I already knew, but you might want to tread carefully.
valpotter . . . the border's one? DON'T TELL ME IT'S ON YOUTUbE!?
jan94: Me too!
IM PROUD OF YOU GUYS! for all of those that read the review and didnt spoil it for the rest of us, u should know it means a lot that we fans all have one thing in common- NO SPOILERS! mugglenet, i think you shouldtake down the review from the site- its stressing us all out wayyy too much. i think im gonna watch spongebob or something for the next to days and not go on any potter site until ive finished the book! :)
I freakin' hate the fu***ng Baltimore Sun! So, they spoil Harry's fate, what the DHs are, and what happens. Grrr. The Baltimore Sun's a piece of s**t.
Alright, I definitely went to my computer to check my e-mail, my yahoo page came up, and the Times review was staring me in the face. I just had to read. To my surprise, Michiko Kakutani had the **** to spoil me. I am not going to lie, it was an excellant review, and Jo should be proud. However, it left me with some intriguing questions, especially about the true meaning about these deathly hallows. It also shut down some theories I had, oh well. Initially, the review just made me want the book in my hands even more. Happy Book Release, Everyone!!!
*********THIS IS WHAT THE HIGHLIGHTED PART TALKS ABOUT IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WITHOUT BEING SPOILED****The part you highligt isn't bad at all. All it talks about is the obvious a lot of people are going to die the magical people are decideing which sides to choose voldemort infiltrates(?) hogwarts and the ministry so everything is crazy and people get tortured stuff like that..... its pretty much like reading the back of a book where it says what the book is about.. the excerpt not the***********END ******** I was listening to the radio today and they were talking about the spoilers around the net and they said the names of everyone who died... I was so mad... can they do that?
Yes, normally publishers DO release advance copies for reviewers before a book is avaiable to the general public. There's an article online someplace where Scholastics admits this is the usual practice, but they chose not to do it with Deathly Hallows.
DanielRadcliffeIsSEXY, i totally AGREE WITH U, I AM GLAD I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!!!!!!!1
I don't think Mugglenet should have posted the review. That is just going to lead the site's visitors to be tempted into reading that filth.
WHY DID YOU POST THIS? I really want to read it but then no uggh Mugglenet I say in a whiny voice I wish you hadn't posted this Also to the New York Times WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
AHHHHHHHHHH! Do we have to live under a hole to keep it unspoiled for us?!?! I wish I didn't have to work and could stay home and not hear anything lol. I am shutting myself up when I get the book and not coming out till it's finished!
So hard to not read D:!! Darn temptation D: Darn it to the deep, dark, (possibly smelly and rat infested?) depths of Voldemort's sock drawer D:! ._.
Danielradcliffeissexy did u say pitchforks and torches?? THINK its the 21st century GET THE 50 CALIBERS AND AK-47'S AND START A COUNTRY-WIDE [if there isn't one alread] RIOT/ANGRY MOD OF THE 21ST CENTURY - FUK THE NYTIMES
I highly advise those regular readers of the Times to write a letter to the editor in protest of what is the most obscene ploy for readers I have ever seen (but did not read). If it wasn't hard enough already to avoid spoilers, it almost be impossible now with people talking about the review. If we are lucky most people will have enough of a sense of decency not to ruin it for the rest of us.
the Baltimore Sun has a great article on the leaks http://www.baltimoresun.c om/entertainment/booksmag s/bal-potter0718,0,204575 1.story they also have a review http://www.baltimoresun.c om/entertainment/booksmag s/bal-2potter0718,0,27413 35.story
You guys rock! keep refraining from reading!
DON"T GO TO THE BALT. SUN LINKS!!!!!!!!!!!1
You can complain to the editor of the NYT book section at books@nytimes.com. Let's all send him Howlers!
YOU GUYS IT DOESN'T SPOIL ANYTHING READ MY COMMENT IT WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE HIDDEN TEXT I PROMISE NO SPOILERS!! its pretty much what you read on the inside cover flap thingy that tells you what the book is about..
I haven't read the review, so I'm not entirely certain what it contains, if it's full of incredible spoilers or just information on the plot (people seem to be posting mixed reviews about the review itself) Either way, I can't risk ANYTHING being spoiled for me. I have no idea what anything is, I have no clue what goes on, and I've waited this long not knowing what the Deathly Hallows are and I'm darn sure going to keep it that way until I read the words writen by JK herself. I just PRAY that people keep their mouths shut and respect those of us who don't want any part of the spoilers. I'm scared to go to work Friday (I'm a book manager and am in charge of the Potter Party), because I don't want someone to blurt anything out to me. There was some guy at work the other day trying to tell me about them, and wouldn't leave me alone, "C'mon, don't you want to know? You're the book manager, I figured you want to know". NO! Lets give JK the respect she deserves and be true Potter fans and not spoil it for us or the rest of the world. I can't believe the audacity of the New York Times. It's disrespectful to millions of fans.
as much as i would love to read it...it just doesn't seem right. so many expectations are building and the excitement of the midnight release will be gone if i read it now...plus, if it mentions character deaths i wouldn't want to be disappointed before i was even holding the book...plus, how could a respected, reliable source such as THE NEW YORK TIMES even think about doing such a thing? think of all the unsuspecting readers who just went to read their morning paper this morning and had it all spoiled for them!!!!!
i dont' really think this is something to go to the extreme of HATING the NY Times. I read it and it was a rly good review and there weren't any spoilers at all actually except a brief thing on wat the hallows were (still lots of questions). But if you really don't want to be given even the slightest hint as to what's going to happen in DH then you still probably shouldn't read the review.
Umm... everyone. It's freedom of speech. It's the first amendment, for those of us that live in America...
it doesnt really spoil anything
I WILL NOT READ IT! ben is right...only a few more days guys!
wow. that's all i have to say about the article. wow. and i am kicking myself for reading it too. i thought it would be fake or something.. i am still gonna hope for it. i just don't know how i didn't see these things before tho. i guess it is kinda suspected tho. wow. still wow.
Preserve the secrecy - close the forums - don't post spoilers! Then you post a link to an early review. How inconsistent can you get?!?? Pfft - I'm not reading it.
I restraining myself..i will not read i will not read, i will not read...oh mannnnnn this is taking all of my willpower. first ppl post videos on youtube explaining whats going to happen and now this. doesn't the NY times KNOW better!!! isn't this ILLEGAL???? gahhhh i must not look i must not look. two more days, two more days. going to my happy place. why do ppl feel the need to spoil it?
We would like you to freely speek somewhere else.
this pissed me off so much that i wrote a letter to the editor. and here it is. I was very disappointed to see that your publication decided to spoil Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows before it is released publicly. I did not read the article because I was forewarned (by the spoiler free mugglenet.com) it contained important plot information. I was just saddened to see that The New York Times, THE New York Times jumped on the bandwagon of journalist (or so called) determined to ruin the book for the millions of people who have waited years for this. You couldn't wait 2 days? Well I can! And so can the millions of other Potter Fans that refuse to read such articles. From one news source (yes I am in the business) to another, I am very disappointed. RJY South Bend, IN
