NY Times posts early review of DH
NY Times posts early review of DH After receiving an early copy of Deathly Hallows from an unnamed bookstore, the New York Times has posted a review of the book which also contains a few plot details.

UPDATE: In response, JK Rowling has spoken out about this New York Times review and numerous others:
"I am staggered that American newspapers have decided to publish purported spoilers in the form of reviews in complete disregard of the wishes of literally millions of readers, particularly children, who wanted to reach Harry’s final destination by themselves, in their own time. I am incredibly grateful to all those newspapers, booksellers and others who have chosen not to attempt to spoil Harry’s last adventure for fans."
Bloomsbury has also addressed this concern:
The release date and time embargo of 00.01AM BST on Saturday July 21st is being enforced unflinchingly and without exception by the publishers. We confirm that all Bloomsbury’s customers in 93 countries worldwide are robustly supporting this embargo time to ensure secrecy for the children and adult readers of Harry Potter.
Read the entire press release:
PRESS RELEASE:

Bloomsbury Publishing, originating publisher of Harry Potter, was extremely dismayed to learn last night about early sales in America of a small number of copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows prior to the UK, US and worldwide embargo time agreed with retailers, suppliers, and all third parties involved of 00.01AM British Summer Time on Saturday July 21st 2007.

We are aware of some speculation in the media that internet “spoilers” purporting to be extracts from the book have come from the few early copies sold. We confirm that this is not true as is clear from the press release of July 18th issued by Scholastic Inc, the US publisher of Harry Potter. The “spoilers” remain unauthenticated.

We would like to thank our customers and suppliers again for their full support given in so many different ways. We would also like to thank the worldwide media for their own observance of, and strict policing of, the embargo to preserve the secrecy of the plot for the readers of Harry Potter.

JK Rowling said at 1pm today, ‘I am staggered that American newspapers have decided to publish purported spoilers in the form of reviews in complete disregard of the wishes of literally millions of readers, particularly children, who wanted to reach Harry’s final destination by themselves, in their own time. I am incredibly grateful to all those newspapers, booksellers and others who have chosen not to attempt to spoil Harry’s last adventure for fans.’

mmmmmmmmmmmmm i have to read thi but i won't . i mean we all have waited so long for the release and we can't just ruin that for ourselves. i know it's tempting but think how good it will feel when you finally hold the book in your hand and you have no idea of whats going to happen.

Posted by festy1986 Jul 18th 2007

Is Mugglenet confirming that the leaked book is real by posting a link to a review of the fake book? The book they use is the real book which first off they bought illegally, and secondly it's the same story from what was apparently a faked leak. Seriously, if the leak is the real deal, it's terrible. It's anti climatic.

Posted by MundungusF Jul 18th 2007

WTF? its NOT fake, but what it does spoil isnt to bad.

Posted by jan94 Jul 18th 2007

i've had a while to calm down, and i really don't feel the need to read it anymore. YAY! (can someone PLEASE tell me how to log out of this idiot wesite!)

Posted by hpgirl21053 Jul 18th 2007

hey, i think the balt. sun giveaway might me something more simple, and they might not have given away any more then a simple line of what harry has gained in all........i hope....trust me, that was NOT A SPOILER(to what i just said..)

Posted by x0xandrea Jul 18th 2007

I'm not really bothered by spoilers. I mean, I'm not going to go out of my way to read them. But, if it's spoiled for me that's fine. I'll still read the book either way and be enchanted by JKR.

Posted by jensenly Jul 18th 2007

Yay to MyThreeWizards! My sentiments exactly.

Posted by hallowsaint Jul 18th 2007

PEOPLE SERIOUSLY CHILL OUT!!!!!!!!!!! IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ IT THEN DON'T READ IT, IT'S NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL. IT'S ONLY 2 DAYS TILL THE RELEASE OF THE BOOK AND WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT. IF YOU DON'T WANT ANYMORE TEMPTATIONS AS FAR AS SPOILERS GO THEN AVOID ALL HARRY POTTER SITES. WHAT DOES IT REALLY TRULY MATTER IF SOME PEOPLE HAVE READ THE ONLINE LEAKS, I MEAN SERIOUSLY IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. JUST BE LIKE ME AND DON'T READ THE SPOILERS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO AND IT WILL BE OKAY. I PROMISE THAT YOU WILL LIVE.

Posted by tachyon Jul 18th 2007

Well that's the same story that I read from the copy I downloaded. So unless the NYT got embroiled in what some are calling a well orchestrated hoax, I'm tending to believe that the copy on torrent sites is legit.

Posted by JonathanMalfoy Jul 18th 2007

Im not reading it. But I just have one thing to say, Mugglenet, I thought you vowed to keep spoilers off your website? What do you call this? Oh wait, you called it a spoiler!

Posted by Abraham Jul 18th 2007

I decided to read the review and I'm glad I did. The spoilers are minor. No info who lives or die. The dangers, adventures and struggles are merely commented but not explicitly narrated. What makes me happy is that the review is very, very, very positive to the point that it wetted my appetite to read the book asap. Moreover, our beloved J.K. Rowling is being compared to the best and the greatest of all time: Tolkien, Dickens, Baum, Geoge Lucas, etc. GUYS, IT MEANS THAT DH IS TRULY A MAGNIFICENT WORK - A MASTERPIECE AS WE HOPED IT WILL BE! On Saturday, I will not only prepare my money to pay for book 7, I will prepare a special champaigne as well to celebrate with family and friends the glorious conclusion of one of the best of the best in the history of literature. For those who refuse to read the article, that is also good because the element of surprise is greater on you. TO ALL OF US HARRY POTTER FANS, MY CONGRATULATIONS IN ADVANCE!

Posted by seventhhorcrux Jul 18th 2007

Y would NY times do that? Its like kicking yourself outta business. Ok i need to distract my mind 2 days to go 2 days to go. Does any1 have any game that we can start over this post??

Posted by stuffedwithfluff Jul 18th 2007

This is hard. I'm not good at holding out. ERGHHHHHHHHH.

Dude, Ben, take it off bro. My mouse is magically highlighting each word one by one, and my eyelids wont shut

Posted by f0rtunecookie15 Jul 18th 2007

AHHHHHHHHHH!!! i don't know if i should read it...i've been waiting so long for this book to come out and i don't want it spoiled. ): this is taking a great amount of self-control not to read it.

Posted by PotterLove06 Jul 18th 2007

I WILL NOT READ IT!!! Even though i'm really struggling not to.

Posted by randomchat Jul 18th 2007

Don't worry, if you read it'll just make you want to read the book FASTER!!

Posted by voldemort_rules111 Jul 18th 2007

must...resist...reading.. .spoiler..until...july 21...12 am..ARGH MUST TURN OFF COMPUTER UNTIL JULY 21, 2007 12 A.M *shuts down computer until july 21*

Posted by hallowsaint Jul 18th 2007

HEY GUYS 2 DAYS, JUST 2 DAYS AND WE CAN ALL READ IT AND FIND OUT WITH THE ACTUAL COPY OF THE BOOK!!!!!!!!

Posted by Dref Jul 18th 2007

The New York Times is a piece of crap newspaper, but who would've thought they where this stupid? Lawsuits, anyone? But don't worry guys, the review doesn't spoil much for anyone who has been in the comments pages here recently, but I sure can see some kid or older folk's who don't have/use the Internet being shocked as hell in the morning... The Baltimore Sun article however practically gives Harry's fate away. Well, my opinion of the media couldn't get much lower anyway, but again lawsuits anyone?

Posted by bachwiz18 Jul 18th 2007

AAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUGGGGGH HHHHHHHHHHHHH! This is killing me! I so want to read it, but yet, I don't want it spoiled for me...*SPOILER WARNING* I broke down and read the first two sentences, which tells us half a dozen characters dies...not surprised...and Voldemort broke into Hogwarts and the MoM, but I didn't read anything else, luckily. 2 MORE DAYS...MUST HOLD OFF...AAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUU UUUUGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHH!

Posted by jan94 Jul 18th 2007

i have two sisters and a brother, and we get to read the book in order of age. we swore not to tell each other what happens after finishing the book, LOL =] btw, hallowsaint 2, it's not that people can't make the decision to read the spoilers or not, it's that super burning temptation that we can't stand. and yes, i think WE WILL LIVE.

Posted by BrianaBird Jul 18th 2007

This has been probably one of the hardest desisions of my life. To read or not to read. I sat there staring at the screen, eyes wide, and a fight comparable to the final battle was going on in there. Yes, I have had the unpleasurable experience of maybe/maybe not spoilers, but this is hard cold fact. After I realized that half an hour passed, I decided to read the excerpts. WOW. The choices are really at stakes, if you get my drift.

Posted by MyThreeWizards Jul 18th 2007

Abraham said: "I will prepare a special champaigne as well to celebrate with family and friends the glorious conclusion of one of the best of the best in the history of literature".....What? Not firewhiskey, mead, and butterbeer? :)

Posted by artistichate Jul 18th 2007

I am just one out of a million but... I had to make a name to post a comment on this. I am appauled that they would put such a thing. Everyone has the same idea of waiting just two more days. Why can't the entire world? I mean. I think it is so selfish to post something like this, not Mugglenet of course, but New York Times. It's one thing to write a review, but to spoil the book. I haven't read it of course, but... I am just disgusted by that. There is my bit. I have made my peace. -le sigh-

Posted by lemon_drops Jul 18th 2007

accidently read it. was pretty dang stupid of me. blame myself. but honestly it wasn't even that bad. its not like they gave away any really big information that'll make your eyes pop out of your head or anything... but i suggest you just wait. it'll be better.

Posted by pokemasterflex Jul 18th 2007

I really hate the internet. Major plot spoilers, deaths all around PAGES they friggin die on but that wont stop me from reading it 435843025 times :-)

Posted by klepto Jul 18th 2007

The New York Times isn't a piece of crap newspaper, they're just really rude.

Posted by potter_plays_hockey Jul 18th 2007

this is seriously SO UNFAIR!! i've been sitting here for like the past 2 weeks, being a good gurl and not looking at the spoilers... now it's getting harder to resist!!!!!! but i'm waitin' to find out what happens when the book is OFFICIALLY released and not any time before. We all owe it to Jo to give her that last little bit of suspense to hold over our heads...

Posted by TerrierMom Jul 18th 2007

Good grief, guys and gals, there was really very little in that review that is any different than what you'd find if you clicked on Deathly Hallows (Book 7) here at Mugglenet. Just confirmation of general things you'd expect, given how the story has been set up in Books 1-6. The major thing they reveal is about what the Deathly Hallows are. I don;t mind I know. In fact I think I am even a bit glad. I was in such suspense as to what/who the Goblet Of Fire, The Order Of The Phoenix, and the Half Blood Prince were before Books 4-6 came out. I felt the same about who the tawny haired person who looked like a lion was. And then when I found out what/who these things were, it wasn't all what I expected them to be. None of the things had the importance in reality that I'd built in my mind that they had. Don't worry about missing out if you don't read it now. You aren;t missing much. Really. Scout's honor and all. Anyway, you can read it later, after DH is in all our hot little hands!

Posted by skelegrojunkie Jul 18th 2007

Yeah, the spoiler isn't bad. I did what another user did and highlighted it one word at a time. Just in case you're worried it doesn't reveal any deaths but it does say something about the plot line so most of it is stuff you already know. the second paragraph is something yuou may not want to read. I didn't care about the spoiler I read because I'm going to need to read the book to understand it anyway, but it's seriously nothing hugely significant. no specifics are divulged

Posted by Snapesforhimself Jul 18th 2007

I read the review and it doesnt give away any big spoilers and it will make want to read the book even more.

Posted by hallowsaint Jul 18th 2007

WELL jan94 ALL I'M SAYING IS ALL THESE PEOPLE GETTING SO MAD THAT THERE ARE ACTUAL LEAKS ONLINE AND WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT WITH 2 DAYS LEFT....THESE PEOPLE ARE MAKING IT SEEM LIKE A CHOICE BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH.....ALSO LIKE I SAID QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT THE COMMENTS PAGE STILL BEING UP, JUST DON'T GO TO IT.

Posted by Kself482 Jul 18th 2007

Wow, I didn't expect Mugglenet to post any spoilers, even if they gave us a warning. I'm pretty surprised at them...

Posted by DaemonCorps Jul 18th 2007

I'll hold off on the review for now, thanks. I'm guessing whoever found the bit of news was the person to say that there are a bunch of spoilers in it, since I doubt any of the staff would risk spoiling the book for themselves...

Posted by DBear Jul 18th 2007

The New York Times has been rubbish for years. Do a google search on Jayson Blair and you'll find out what I mean.

Posted by klepto Jul 18th 2007

It's not like we didn't know a lot of people were going to die, come on, it's the last book...I mean the only crazy thing is the Harry gives Ginny aids in Chapter 7 "Passing of the Death"..and Hermione gets herpes in Chapter 12 "Things That Give You Bumps in the Night."

Posted by HP_fan81 Jul 18th 2007

Why does it have to be so difficult??? I am REALLY tempted to highlight that and read, but some part of me is screaming NO! I must wait for Saturday... But it's still the whole Thursday and the whole Friday and the time is ticking so incredibly slowly this week for some reason.

Posted by pugal_iyn Jul 18th 2007

i won't , i won't, i won't............WAT R THEY thinkin..... just few days left and they already runing it 4 us.... this is not rite.. I WILL NOT READ IT....I WIL NOT READ IT....I WILL NOT READ IT....this is terrible...no way.... v r 2 close... just can't handly this terrible spoilers... wish they stop..... *tears*... i want to experience it when i'm reading the books... not like this......... so sad.....ppl.....just stick up with what JO said...if u r a true Harry potter fan.... you will not let this happen .............. why... whY... wHY... WHY.... !!!!!!!!! ......i don belive it...... i mean on a newspaper...... they r mad.* tears*

Posted by distinctlydotty09 Jul 18th 2007

It's 49 hours away-have strength fellow Potter fans! We can make it-it seems like all the waiting from ten years does not even begin to compare with these last couple of days...there's danger lurking on every computer and television screen right now...

Posted by blakergirl07 Jul 18th 2007

is there ANY chance this really could be an elaborate hoax? I pray it is sooooo much! I mean has the NYT ever posted a review this early? ugh i was mad before and now im just hoping it could be a hoax! eek

Posted by doughnuts Jul 18th 2007

sweetness :)

Posted by evamaude Jul 18th 2007

Well, I couldn't wait. I skimmed the review, hoping it didn't tell me who died, or who won, or whose side Snape was on - and it didn't. It does tell you a little about the Hallows and gives away a couple of things from past books that were clues - but far from spoiling the book for me, I'm even more keen to get a hold of it! Not long now ...

Posted by ladykrystyna Jul 18th 2007

OK, that's 2 major newspapers with early reviews and both give information that correlates with what I've read of the pdf book floating around, which is bumming me out because I was really beginning to believe that it wasn't real and I didn't want it to be because there seemed to be so much OOC. Plus, there are still some things about the pdf that point to it being fake: (1) The cover - inside flap front and back have no printing on it. All of my HP books have a synopsis in the front and either JKR's quick bio on the back (HP1) or reviews of the previous books; (2) The cover looks taped onto the book itself and the back flap has a line down it; (3) The title page with picture - the picture looks so familiar to me, it's driving me MAD! I've checked every HP book and the picture isn't in any of them, but I know I've seen it somewhere before; moreover, it doesn't seem to fit what I've read of the book, like the usual title pictures do; (4) I don't believe that's the right about of pages; (5) the epilogue, from what I've seen of it [I stopped reading the book] is cheesey, including at least one of the characters naming their child a very "fanfic"y name. Why would JKR set us up for one quest and turn it into another? Why hasn't Scholastic come out again about the "early reviews" - they've never released it for that purpose before - unless, this is all a hoax to keep us occupied while they get the books to us and the newspapers are in on it? Do I need medication? I guess I'll have to wait until Saturday!

Posted by BrianaBird Jul 18th 2007

Well, after I read what some of the other people wrote here, I decided to read the entire review. Really, it wasn't that bad. The review, if anything, made me even more excited for the book than I initially was! I am so excited and sad at the same time. I'll probably be sobbing throughout the entire thing, but I am SO excited!

Posted by ronweasleygirl333 Jul 18th 2007

Truth be told I gave into temptation and read some of it... I was too afraid of major spoilers - but what I read was not big; not anything I didn't know! But the fact that NEWSPAPERS are doing this is absolutely disgusting - fans of Harry Potter have been waiting years for this and now they're going to ruin it??? This is bull! Not even going near the Baltimore Sun or any form of media til I get the book and read it! This is really disappointing!!!

Posted by roseruslan Jul 18th 2007

gosh.... it so hard not to read it! buti guess my will power are low so i've read it... hmmm not much spoilers in this article.. just conforming what our theories before... cant wait!! just 2 days more..... there so many spoilers alert out there, however im going to believe the fully authorize story when it come out!!!!

Posted by crjdcc Jul 18th 2007

The thing that disappoints me the most is how mugglenet has beaten it into everyone's heads NOT to spoil the book, and to stray away from anything and everything that has to do with spoilers. I understand that everyone has the choice on whether or not to highlight it and read it, but why contradict themselves on all this "DO NOT SPOIL" bs by throwing it right in our faces? BTW FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE NOT HIGHLIGHTED THE SPOILER, IT DOES NOT REVEAL ANYTHING THAT WE COULD NOT HAVE GUESSED ON OR OWN. THE ONLY BIG SPOILER IN IT IS WHAT THE DEATHLY HALLOWS REALLY ARE. IT DOES NOT REVEAL MAJOR PLOT POINTS, WHO DIES, WHAT HAPPENS, ECT ECT. DONT WORRY!!!!!

Posted by kayleedachs Jul 18th 2007

The review is fine--go ahead and read it. I don't consider anything in a spoiler. I'm a horrible "read the last page first," and getting a general outline of the book like this might help me resist temptation for once! Frankly, what really made me angry that got posted on Mugglenet was Jo's comment about some people loathing the ending--a comment from a documentary that's not due to air until the fall. Now THAT'S something that Mugglenet had no business posting--and right in the title of the item, too, so no one could avoid it. I sent an email to complain, but since no one at Mugglenet saw fit to reply, I decided to mention it here. This review is a fine--that Jo comment was not!
