NY Times posts early review of DH
NY Times posts early review of DH After receiving an early copy of Deathly Hallows from an unnamed bookstore, the New York Times has posted a review of the book which also contains a few plot details.

UPDATE: In response, JK Rowling has spoken out about this New York Times review and numerous others:
"I am staggered that American newspapers have decided to publish purported spoilers in the form of reviews in complete disregard of the wishes of literally millions of readers, particularly children, who wanted to reach Harry’s final destination by themselves, in their own time. I am incredibly grateful to all those newspapers, booksellers and others who have chosen not to attempt to spoil Harry’s last adventure for fans."
Bloomsbury has also addressed this concern:
The release date and time embargo of 00.01AM BST on Saturday July 21st is being enforced unflinchingly and without exception by the publishers. We confirm that all Bloomsbury’s customers in 93 countries worldwide are robustly supporting this embargo time to ensure secrecy for the children and adult readers of Harry Potter.
Read the entire press release:
PRESS RELEASE:

Bloomsbury Publishing, originating publisher of Harry Potter, was extremely dismayed to learn last night about early sales in America of a small number of copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows prior to the UK, US and worldwide embargo time agreed with retailers, suppliers, and all third parties involved of 00.01AM British Summer Time on Saturday July 21st 2007.

We are aware of some speculation in the media that internet “spoilers” purporting to be extracts from the book have come from the few early copies sold. We confirm that this is not true as is clear from the press release of July 18th issued by Scholastic Inc, the US publisher of Harry Potter. The “spoilers” remain unauthenticated.

We would like to thank our customers and suppliers again for their full support given in so many different ways. We would also like to thank the worldwide media for their own observance of, and strict policing of, the embargo to preserve the secrecy of the plot for the readers of Harry Potter.

JK Rowling said at 1pm today, ‘I am staggered that American newspapers have decided to publish purported spoilers in the form of reviews in complete disregard of the wishes of literally millions of readers, particularly children, who wanted to reach Harry’s final destination by themselves, in their own time. I am incredibly grateful to all those newspapers, booksellers and others who have chosen not to attempt to spoil Harry’s last adventure for fans.’

I read it. It didn't tell anything too specific. But my 11 o'clock news was just talking about Harry Potter and they showed chapter titles/pictures! Right after complaining about The NYT! And the showed a glimpse of the last page of the table of contents..with no warning. I'm mad. /:

Posted by SammiBaby028 Jul 18th 2007

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGG. This is SOOO DIFFICULT to stop myself! Im like seriously having an internal battle with myself. I want to read it sooo badly.. but... I can't. I just CAN'T.

Posted by longlostphoenix07 Jul 18th 2007

well i've been doing western civ homework for the past 3 hours---can you blame me for reading the spoilers?! i was like pulling the cursor letter by letter before i was like screw this and read the whole thing, lol. the only good thing about the review was that it wasn't too specific. i'm glad i know what the dh are now though, it was driving me up the wall!!!!!!! and the didn't reveal deaths which is good, because i was afraid they'd say whether or not harry dies...i'd be so tempted......

Posted by hpgirl_91 Jul 18th 2007

NEW YORK TIMES HOW COULD YOU DO THIS!!!! i am sooo upset with them!

Posted by RKRK1313 Jul 18th 2007

you would think that nyt, being a reputable newspaper, wouldn't do something like this. wow... people are so stupid in our world today. scholastic should sue them.

Posted by DuckieDuddle Jul 18th 2007

I want to thank those who've read the review and let everyone know the gist of it it, ie that the deaths are listed and plot line. I would hav ended u reading it just to find out what it told, then been disappointed in myself for not holding out. This way, my curiosity was sated, and I can be able to live with myself. Okay, 2 days and 7 minutes, and 30 seconds to go. As bad as this may sound, I am as excited an nervous about the release as I was the week before I got married...it's okay my husband feels the same way. We so need help! So happy to share this great adventure with all of you!!!!

I am not going to read too much into (no pun intended) what these reviewers have to say. I read both reviews as objectively as possible and the reviewer at the Baltimore paper especially seemed inept. She hinted that Jo never solved the mystery of why some people turn into ghosts. If this reviewer were a real fan she would remember that conversation Harry had with NH Nick after the death of Sirius in OTP. I am not trusting any person trying to spoil this book for any of us because we're all going to absolutely digest it in two days time. So those of you who read either of these two reviews, never fear, they are written by journalists who are doing a job, not fans who pick up on the true subtleties which may lie within. Having said that, only 49 hours remain for me, lets keep our fingers crossed!!!

Posted by SeranAileron Jul 18th 2007

Confirmation of what the Deathly Hallows really are/is was a million times better than what my expectations were. That's one fewer stupid guess for me to have going in. In a way, I expect this will actually enhance the experience, because I won't be digging for as much information and trying to reach as many conclusions prematurely.

Everyone who is tempted to read the NY Times review, just click the link below instead. It's from here at MuggleNet about things already CONFIRMED for DH. Stuff that's been confirmed for a long time now. SOME of what Mugglenet has listed at this link are further confirmed in the NYT reviews. You read the link, and you've pretty much read what's in the NY Times review. You'll know what the review says, without having to read anything that you don;t want to see! :) THe NYTimes also praises JKR extensively, but we all already know how wonderful she is, don;t we :) :) :) :) :) http://www.mugglenet.com/ books/futurebooks/book7/c onfirmed.shtml

i cant believe people would want to spoil it for everyone, thats so horrible that they kill the excitement of like opening the book the night of

Posted by hp_rocks13 Jul 18th 2007

the book doesn't have that many moments as the other books but the book is awesome.......specially the radio part now that has some humor lol

Posted by Lazerlike42 Jul 18th 2007

The NYT review doesn't list any deaths. I believe someone suggested it did? It doesn't, nor does it give away any more of the plot than the little section on the back of a book would.

Posted by kdb5104 Jul 18th 2007

The temptation to read this is unbelievably strong! But I just can't, CAN'T, ruin this for myself! This means that I will only, and regrettably, have to avoid the computer for the next few days.... I CANNOT believe the end is near! I, unfortunately had HBP spoiled for me(and not because of a leak on a website, but from a so-called friend!), so I gotta keep it from happening this time. That is why I have taken off work, and plan on doing nothing this weekend but read before I even touch a keyboard! I do, however, agree with crzyguy662, they should TOTALLY push up the release date to like... NOW! LoL! Peace all!

Posted by LadyCake Jul 18th 2007

I read the review and it really doesn't tell much that wasn't already theorized, but I must say, I can't believe some of these newspapers. They really should be ashamed. These stories could have been held until 12:01am Friday, if they were so hard on to release them. They care little about the fans of these stories. I say boo and hiss to the NY Times and all the other newspapers that are releasing their reviews two days early. >:(

The books were mailed early. The people who the books were mailed to can do anything they want to with their proerty. Nobody can legally stop them from reading, selling, or sharing their books. Which is what they did with the NY Times. So, the NY Times cannot be sued. The reviewed a book bought legally through legal channels. It was the publisher and shipper's responsibility to keep the book out of the general public's hands until the 21st. If someone stole it, so be it. But they received a product they paid for in the mail, so they did what they wanted to as citizens. Funny, the truest test of your belief in free speech and free press is your willingness to fight for somebody saying or printing something you disagree with. "Where the press is free, and every man able to read, all is safe." Thomas Jefferson and "In order to enjoy the inestimable benefits that the liberty of the press ensures, it is necessary to submit to the inevitable evils that it creates.." Alexis de TOCQUEVILLE

Posted by kayleedachs Jul 18th 2007

I read the actual review--it gives you a broad outline of the plot with no facts about who dies or anyone's fate. It defines the Deathly Hallows and mentions some inanimate objects that will make appearances. I'm awful about reading the last page of books first--this review may help me avoid that for once in my life--I'm glad that I read it. I can't wait for the book!

Posted by jellyskittles Jul 18th 2007

i read the review. its not too spoilerish theres only the bit about wat the deathly hallows actually are which ive been DYING to find out, but apart from that its basically just saying how good a book it is.

Posted by kingsholto Jul 18th 2007

its not fair....yall shouldnt be able to tempt me like this!!!! i wont read it ...i wont read it ...i wont read it...

Posted by Draconian_Toast Jul 18th 2007

The New York Times of all things. I would have expected them to have had better sense to hold off on it. Even if they wanted a big story or whatever, all you have to do is turn on the news to see interviews with all the people who are royally pissed the book leaked. I hope they didn't put it in print- I didn't read any more about it because I'm afraid of nitheads posting spoilers everywhere.

Posted by ProneSoul Jul 18th 2007

So, I have to admit, I began reading the first paragraph, and stopped at the fifth word. I am not about to spoil it for myself. However, I would recommend that you guys not tempt us to read it! It's already hard enough, for goodness sake.... Two more days....just two more days!!! My God! *runs away from computer, and vows not to open it for two more days.*

I've waited about 5 years for this book. I was never a real fan until then, and I think even I, has not waited 10 years, have waited long enough. At some points I'm glad I came across a few spoilers, just to give me insight on to what happen. I may have read a little too deep, but I still am missing answers, and it has done nothing more than confuse me. This review just gave insight on what to be prepared for. It gave spoilers, but nothing specific. It will most definitely hold me over from reading the last chapter first.

Posted by crjdcc Jul 18th 2007

and I quote from mugglenet itself: "Now that we're just five days from the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, plot spoilers that actually look legitimate are starting to leak online. For some people, it's been a ten-year wait for Book 7, and that could be so easily destroyed if we find out what will happen too early. Therefore, be warned: there are few spoiler-safe sites on the net right now. However, MuggleNet guarantees you that spoilers will not appear on any of our pages." Say that in my good ear?
