i think the two characters she didn't need to kill were Lupin and Tonks since their exact deaths weren't really mentioned -- like how they died. I think the character that got the reprieve was Hagrid.
I LOVED the book. Especially the ron/hermione bits, I couldn't stop giggling on page 625. Favorite line: "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU B****!" And Ron's birthday present to Harry, well that kept me giggling for awhile. But oh the deaths, I cried several times. Especially at the death of, well, that one person. And Percy's reaction, it just made me sob so hard. And ******** was so awesome! Who would've thought that character could be so nice, when treated with respect? (If you haven't noticed, I'm being vague so people who haven't finished, or haven't got their books yet won't be spoiled. But as for the former, what would the be doing on mugglenet anyway? They have a book to read.)
I absolutely loved the book. I agree with a comment someone wrote above about how JKR may write a book (perhaps another book for Comic Relief?) about the 19 year gap. The epilogue was not what I expected, but that doesn't make it terrible "fanfiction" as some people have said. I cried so much throughout the book, it is hard to keep track. I cried when Dudley said "I don't think you are a waste of space"; I cried when Dobby died, especially when Harry buried him with his own hands; I cried when Snape said "Look.....at.....me" because I realized instantly the significance behind his last words; and I cried when I realized Fred died (I am still in utter shock!). As for the chapter "The Forest Again" I was positively howling, so much that I disturbed my neighbours. The twist ending was brilliant. I am fully confident that JKR is going to answer the rest of the unanswered questions, perhaps in an interview or on her website. This book, by far, is the best in the series! Well done Jo!!!
Ron and Hermione Kiss PAGE 625 "The Battle of Hogwarts" Someone said they missed when Ron and Hermione kissed. So here it is! All I can say is, "FINALLY!@!!"
I reread parts of book one and the first time Harry saw Snape, Snape was gazing into his eyes [Lily's eyes], and that was the same situation the last time that Harry saw Snape. Amazing...
The kiss. The most awaited kiss. "There was a clatter as the basilisk fangs cascaded out of Hermione's arms. Running at Ron, she flund them around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. Ron threw away the fangs and broomstick he was holding and responded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet" Well...I'm sorry for all those Harry-Hermione fans.....NOT Thankyou J.K.R I love you!!!! Thanks for making them live! Harry and Ginny Ron and Hermione. Fred, you shall always live in our hearts.
albus severeus But surely after killing dumbledore Snape wont be privy to information on order, would he? then why would it look suspicious
yeah the kiss was for sure amazing. both of them, i adored like amazingly the one in ginny's room. ahhhh so romantic. and then obviously ron/hermione was fantastic. yayyy
This was just amazing. I loved the book. I love the series. AMAZING.
randomness! did anyone notice u can see griphook riding on harrys back in the hp deathly hallows uk cover(the one where they are escaping gringotts)?
It seems that the missing 24 hours is still somewhat unresolved, or did I miss something as I plowed through the book?
how much time do you think before JKR starts answering questions?
Names and meanings Harry's kids' lily "cowardly": albus...dk: James "Superior and misleading" seams right in this instance Ron's kids; Rose in old german, hrod= rose in english, meaning of old fame or from fame.... ron saying, im extremely famous this scemes right: Hugo..Mind, heart or spirit...so smart lupin; Teddy..Gif t of God, or my, baby werewolf Draco; Scorpius, scorpion, coming from the dragon-Draco ha ha
what was the background on the american cover? those arches? and also, dyou think jk really will answer questions or will she leave us to fill in the blanks for ourselves?
OMG... I loved this book!!!! It was so emotional and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was sooooo much different than the others. I think I cried the hardest during the battle at Hogwarts ******spoiler---- when Fred, Lupin, and Tonks died I sobbed it was awful!******* I do wish there were a few more explanations with a few things like what did Dudley see when he was attacked, who the squib was that later used magic, what happened to George and Luna in the Epilogue, who was taking care of Teddy Lupin, where the trio lived and worked in the Epilogue. Obviously I think the Epilogue was just a little weak but maybe Jo will answer our burning questions later *crossing fingers* It saddens me that this was the end of the journey... or was it???? I LOVE HJP!
@pygmypuff I definitely think JKR will answer, Reason is simple... she is too authoritive with Harry Potter, and the idea of someone else making up fact will torment her. I feel JKR should have worked more on this book... it seemed rushed
Hi, loved the mugglecast 101! Just wanted to offer a possible answer to the "character who does manage in desperate circumstances to do magic quite late in life" (quoted from March 19, 1999 Barnes and Noble interview). It's always more what JKR *doesn't* say than what she does say! For instance, she never actually says in this quote that she is referring to a muggle or squib. I think the person who does magic that normally they could not have is....Ron! Ron is able to speak Parselmouth to get into the COS, so that they can use the Basilisk fangs/venom to destroy the remaining Horcruxes! Well, it may not be what people imagined or expected (I personally was guessing it would be Mrs. Figg), but there you are! :-)
No its nor ROn... ha ha the answer was staring at our faces all the time!!! The answer is.... wait for it.... Ted Tonks!! Andromeda's husband... where you ask "Hagrid's fine, son," said the man, "the wife's seeing to him now. How are you feeling? Anything else broken? I've fixed your ribs, your tooth, and your arm. I'm Ted, by the way, Ted Tonks – Dora's father." he is a muggle... well how can he have fixed ribs, tooth and arm.. he must have considered circumstances deperate
spoilers!! i was so sad about tonks and lupins and dobbys and fred and hedwig and snapes and moody death and my poor grammer skills (hehe)
yeah it did look like she killed off some of them just for pure fun
i think it was ted tonks who learned magic later in life cause hes a muggle and he mended harrys ribs and teethafter the motor bike crashed
People, the person who does magic late in life could be Aberforth. Remember how Dumbledore dismissed his ability? Or it could be Ted- except he still calls himself a muggle after he repairs Harry so maybe it wasn't magic that did the "fixing". Remus and Tonks deaths were foreshadowed by making Harry the godfather. The cover of the US book is the Great Hall. Remember the ceiling is bewitched to look the sky outside and JK kept mentioning the sun's rising. The shadows are the people crammed in the Great Hall. Both Harry and Vol are reaching for the Elder Wand when it flew out Vol's hand. So no the US cover was not misleading, we just didn't know what we were looking at. However, I don't know why the artist chose the scene of the dragon for the deluxe cover- it was, relatively, such a small and unnecessary (as far as for reading the cover for clues) scene to chose for such a big and important thing as the cover. I really LOVED the last 150 pages or so of the book!!! I'm not so sure about the epilogue though. That had gotten spoiled for me and at the time I thought it was stupid fan fiction. That part really doesn't work with the rest of the book (in my opinion, of course). I'm disappointed that I did not find out what happened in those missing 24 hours (I have the feeling I read to fast and that it was eluded to in Snape's memory). I think Dumbledore met with Snape and that Harry may have been at Hogwarts during their conversation.
Oh it was just amazing! I KNEW Ted Tonks had been mentioned as a Muggle in the previous books. I was so confused when he said about fixing up Harry. It didn't even occur to me that he was the one doing magic late in life. It was absolutely brilliant, but does anybody else feel a sort of hole where Harry and JKR used to fill with anticipation?
@shana1998 It cant be Aberforth, u know why? cos Aberforth went to Hogwarts... elphias doge said that, remember when he was saying it was hard being his friend n being overshadowed, so it will be harder for Aberforth... sorry but Aberforth noway
Quick question cause I can't seem to find it...what page is the R/H kiss?
i don't get it. how did neville, within an hour, come up with the gryffindore sword that was in griphook's posession to kill nagini?
A giant Thank You to Mrs. JK Rowling for years of enjoyment, for loyalty to your fans and to your characters, and for honesty in your writing. Many died in this last book, and the casualty count started early, some unknown and some well loved. You were true to the reality of war. I do not think the "body count" was disproportionate to the situation your characters were in--sad as it was! There were times when someone would die and I would cry "no not ...." but then I had to nod my head in approval and think "yes, that is how it truly would be." And while many have asked for more from your epiloge, it think it served its purpose well. One small glimpse forward at heros who finally had the chance to simply.... live. Deathly Hallows is the series' crowning glory.
yeah, it is Ted Tonks who does magic late in life... unless rowling made a mistake... she made another one when Harry suddenly realizes that Voldemort would hv hidden the tiara after meeting with Dumbledore for DADA post... he seem to think voldy will get a chance to nick the Gryffindor sword.... but sword wasnt there till Harry pulled it out of the hat in second year... was it?
After reading Deathly Hallows, I started to ship Dumbledore/Grindlewald Z OMG so hot i quote "you have no idea how his ideas caught me. *inflamed* me" I love you JO!!! D/G rox and also Albus-Severus/Scoorpius is teh new Harry/Draco! (AS/S) LOL.
Well she didn't answer every question, but she did answer a TON!! And as I've said before that's okay that there are still unanswered questions, we can't expect (nor did I want) everything tied up in a neat little package. Just means that there is more for us to imagine and explore and wonder about and more for her to write on later if she wishes. I mean isn't that one reason we love her writing so much, that she leaves us so much to think on and theorize about? Besides is it really important to know some of the minor details like what James and Lily did? I absolutely loved this book, it is amazing and heart wrenching. There are some awesome characterizations and I loved how the final battle was at Hogwarts!!! There were also some amazing quotes in this book as well, aside from Mrs. Weasley's that has been mentioned. I loved Harry his son how he was named after two Headmasters, one of whom was a Slytherin and probably the bravest man he's ever met. "Snif" I loved McGonagall telling Slughorn. "....If you wish to leave with your students, we shall not stop you. But if any of you attempt to sabotage our resistance or take up arms against us within this castle, then Horace, we duel to Kill." ...."The time has come for Slytherin house to decide upon it's loyalties." Ahhh...how I love that woman!! I also love how Harry was able to do Crucio on Amycus after he spat at Prof. McGonagall. And probably one of the best lines from Dumbledore "Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and above all those that live without love." And "Of course it's hapening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean it's not real." Gotta love that man. I could go on and on.......
why werent the houses united? I dont know why I thought, but having a Gryffindor-Slytherin rivalry end seemed more important... esp since Sorting Hat said they were best friends... So Harry was a direct descendent of third brother... and Voldemort of the second brother (or wasnt he??) so that means they were related... darn!
deckthehalls------Very well said....they really did finally get the chance to just live. An that truly was what the epilogue was about.
episode 100 wont work!!!!!!
Without meaning to sound trite, the book was brilliant. I cried when I got the book, and when I opened the book and it said "we now present the seventh and final installment in the epic tale of Harry Potter," I was howling. After gathering up enough courage to actually turn the pages of the book, I read the dedication and I starting crying like I never have before. She dedicated 1/7 of the book to us, her fans! It was heart breaking. Everything about the book was awesome except the epilouge. I didn't think that the book was over after I read the last page because: 1. It didn't seem like the end, and 2., wasn't the book supposed to be 784 pages? It was only 759! When I finished the book I put it down and cried. Then I went to sleep, only I couldn't, because I was too upset to have finished the book. I'm a bit confused though. What did Dudley see when the dementor attack him? Who was the person who performed magic later in life? And, finally, (please forgive me if this was answered and I'm too thick to have comprehended it) what WAS the importance of Harry's eyes? I will always stay a Harry Potter fan. I hope you will, too!
So Harry was a direct descendent of third brother since he had the cloak... and Voldemort of the second brother since he would have inherited the stone (or wasnt he??) so that means they were related... darn! Does the two combine to mean Harry too was a descendent of Slytherin?
So Harry was a direct descendent of third brother since he had the cloak... and Voldemort of the second brother since he would have inherited the stone (or wasnt he??) so that means they were related... darn! Does the two combine to mean Harry too was a descendent of Slytherin? I dont remember, has JKR denied this possibility, or hvnt answered?
Ted tonks was MUGGLE BORN, not a muggle. http://www.mugglenet. com/infosection/character s/characterst.shtml bo ut halfway down.
Neville got the sword because he was a true Gryffindor. Just before the sorting hat falls onto his head, he defies Vol with cries of "Dumbledore's Army". In book 2, Dumbledore says that Harry was loyal or a true Gryffindor (or something like that) when he was faced with the young Tom Riddle and that's why he was able to pull the sword. And Neville, who could have easily been the one in Harry's place (maybe) does exactly the same thing when he is faced with the mutated Tom Riddle (Vol). Neville was absolutely outstanding. Molly was a force to be reckoned with when faced with losing her family. It is amazing that Bellatrix died the same death as her cousin, Sirius. I also found it amazing that Harry was also able to do 2 of the 3 unforgivable curses but not the worse one. And amazing too is that Harry only destroyed one of the horcruxes, the diary, himself. The rest everyone had a hand in. That is where Harry differed from Dumbledore, he came understand that the journey was not his alone. He wasn't even the one to kill Vol. It was Vol that killed himself, finally, when his curse rebounded once again. I really don't like goblins. And that's all I got to say about that.
I just finished the book. I can say that without a doubt this is the greatest series of books I've ever read. I absolutely loved the book. It was awesome to see the trio on their own trying to figure everything out. It was great to see the less-than-saint Dumbledore which just goes to show that everyone has their problems and misgivings. The ending was phenominal. I kept asking myself how Harry was going to get out of that particular tight spot. Action filled to the brim. I was very sad to read the last page and put the book down because thats all she wrote folks! And by far the sadest part of the entire book was when Harry dug the grave for his little friend. I about lost it and I've never cried during a book. Now I still have not cried by my eyes were swimming a few times. What an emotional rollercoaster. All that's left to ask is, what's next? What other author out there will be able to remotely rival this phenomenon? I guess we'll see. Fair well. It was a fun ride...
I think Neville got the sword out of the sorting hat--which Voldemort had placed on his head. I would assume that Lipin and Tonks child was raised by Tonks' mother, and that Harry also had a significant part in his life. Items that I found interesting: Each horcrux was destroyed by a different person. Ginny was not as involved as I thought she would be. (Her kiss with Harry was the one I really liked!) I also liked that she didn't want Cho to take Harry the the Ravenclaw Common Room!
sorry if this is stupid but can someone please tell me what everyone means by "the missing 24 hours"
this book made me cry. like seriously. its a good thing no one was home because i was sobbing as if my own mother had died. first dobby, then fred, then remus and lupin [poor teddy], snape [omg, im so sad for him. i luv u snape, look..at..me…omg that was so poignant} and then i thought hagrid and harry died too. oh man, i was bawling. but i loved!!!absolutely loved!!! how the book was written. right from the beginning, it was packed with action. and it evoked alot of emotions from you. i felt angry at ron for deserting harry, harry for acting so stupidly, falling for traps, believing the rumours about dumbledore and saying voldemort's name, even after it had become so taboo. i never thought that i would say that i loved kreacher! omg, it was so touching how he abandoned his role as a cunning despicable creature. but i still want to know wth happened to umbridge. when she and rita skeeter appeared again i wanted to jump into the book and strangle them. i thought the task harry was facing seemed near impossible. especially with the ministry's incomptence. i loved how jk let the whole wizarding world be taken over by death eaters, and how it was based on hitler’s nazi germany. it really portrayed the terror faced seventeen years ago, and the awful consequences if harry failed to succeed. i liked the part showing molly weasley fighting with bellatrix lestrange. girl, haha. you go girl! and go neville!! and ron and hermione ended up together, big surprise. but that was so sweet! at the end when they showed up at Platform 9 and 3/4 with their children, still bickering! and harry and ginny!yay! and little albus severus, james, and lily! All in all, i think the book couldn't have had a better ending. while reading it, i both laughed and cried, and had a wonderful time reading what i consider to be the greatest harry potter book of all. for seven years, i have been on an amazing journey with harry, which took me from childhood to the end of my teenage year...
sara4292 the book is 784 pages, but that includes the chapter listings, dedication, and end papers. If you count all that together it comes to 784. .....She didn't explicitly say what Dudley saw, but I think what he saw with the demntors is all the torment that he gave Harry over all the years. As to magic late in life, I'm torn between Ted Tonks as others have mentioned or perhaps Dudley I don't mean spells or anything for him, but caring for Harry since Jo says that Love is magic......The importance of Harry having Lily's eyes is that Snape loved Lily and he saw her in Harry whenever he saw her eyes. At his end Snape called out "Look at me" and the last thing he got to see were Lily's eyes. Does that help?
thanks shana1998!
Ted Tonks----Slobbish Muggle-born father to Nymphadora Tonks. hmm... well I dont know anymore... if its not Ted Tonks I dont know. I will skim order of the phoenix n try and find out whether he was a wizrd
I'm curious as to who Voldemort thinks the source of Snape's Order information is. In the first chapter, Snape tells Voldemort that his information about Harry's transport out of Privet drive comes from "the source we discussed". Does VM know that's DD's portrait? Probably not, right? So who does he think it is? And I can't believe how talented a Legillimens Snape turns out to be. Perhaps VM really wasn't that powerful after all.
why is jo so brilliant--stumped us all agaain--who would have guessed hedwig's fate---harry and ginny's kids were AWESOME! but i know snape was good but albus potter's middle name shouldn't be SEVERUS--i cant believe he was lily potter sr.'s friend and i cant believe dumbledores past or that harry was AK-ed and didnt die and then came back and saved molly and molly killed bellatrix and that line "DON'T HURT MY DAUGHTER YOU B****" was so awesome--i am so happy percy made up before fred and poor ted lupin! ugh i am a horrible fan giving it all away---sorry jo but your brilliant and genious and THANK YOU
One thing that I'm still in awe of....Remember how Lupin told Harry that basically he was too soft about Stan Shunpike because he tried to disarm him and not stun? And then he goes on to say don't let expelliarmus be your signature move....and then in the end, he didn't chose to kill Voldemort, but to disarm him. So, really it is a good thing that expelliarmus is his move!
kreacher kicked arse!!!
I've stayed up till 7am and 6am two days in a row and I am DELIRIOUS. Oh my god I cried for about 50 pages straight I'm completely drained lol
