Ok, I just thought about this a lot.. and I liked some bits, but overall.. meh. I thought the first three chapters were rather boring. First a death eathers meeting.. they kill of a hogwarts teacher that we'd never met.. who cares..? Then they talk about taking over the ministry.. if its so easy, why did they have to wait until now? I also didnt like how harry discovered a lot about dumbledores past.. He read a bloody newspaper..! Dursley-c hapter was really melodramatic. And i can't believe how lucky Harry, Ron and Hermione were in this book.. "Oh we need to escape.. oh a dragon! Why dont we sit on its back?" "Oh, wow, this thing isnt just a lightswith i could hear your voices too!" Why I ask you? * Harry could contact aberforth with the mirror SIRIUS gave him.. and sirius said.. "If you want to contact me, say my name".. first of all: How did aberforth get sirius's mirror? 2nd: harry never said aberforths name. HOW could aberforth see harry? *And also, Bill is the secretkeeper of his house.. yet Ron tells dobby the name of the place. That's impossible according to the facts in the previous books. * And JKR never told us that if you heard the secret from the secretkeeper, you become a secretkeeper after the secretkeeper dies.. * And what the... since when can you own somebody elses wand? * My point is, I feel cheated, she could have given us a hint earlier Its all too easy, too... convenient for Harry & co, if you like. (ron speaking parseltongue...?!) Seems like JKR just introduced us a more "wizardingrules" out of thin air (pun not intended). Then, deaths..Lupin was killed OFF-SCREEN in one sentence! Hedwig got more than that..! i felt like jkr didnt give a moment to let it sink in, it was a bit of an anti-climax. (compared to dumbledore and sirius) last thing: search for horcruxes was not how I imagined it at all... they were found and destroyed too easily. I'm so sad, so dispointed someone..anyone.. cheer me up, lol :P
Sorry folks, answer is not Ted Tonks... apparently he is refered to as Muggleborn... which in fact will translate to mean a muggleborn wizard as opposed to plain muggle... so its not Ted Tonks... Another huge mistake... was Snape doesnt become the headmaster till after Harry was removed from privet drive... then how was he talking to Dumbledore's portrait!
maybe dumbledore already had his portrait pre-made just for snape
Griphook must have been REALLY annoyed when he found out the sword had gone . . . .
snape could have visited dumbledores office before he became headmaster.
****Spoiler Stuff***As for the question about the missing 24 hours: What everyone is referring to is the time between the murder of Lily and James to the time Harry was delivered on the Dursley's doorsteps. Lily and James were murdered on Halloween night. We see Vernon go to work the next day. Then in the evening Hagrid brings Harry to Dumbledore at the Dursleys. That's a 24 hour-ish period. I thought it well done with Harry pretending to be dead. I kept wondering how he was going to pull it off- if he was going to be found out. Just brilliant stuff! I loved when the Order and Dumbledore's Army showed up! It was wonderful. I had read over Fred's death- guess I was reading to fast. And Lupin and Tonks deaths. Until Harry talked about not wanting anyone else to die for him. Then I had to go back. I didn't get the whole "look...at...me" part until I read some of the explanations on here. So Harry's mother's eyes helped save him after all- it was the reason why Snape helped as he did throughout the books. James's looks but Lily's eyes. His enemy and his love all in one. Very interesting stuff. I also didn't get the part about the whimpering childlike thing (Voldemort) in Limbo (the place between life and death/heaven and hell) until reading the comments. As for Harry and Vol being related, that's just a third way in which they're connected. But that does not mean that Harry was a descendent of Slytherin because obviously the family tree branched out and whatever Slytherin is on isn't the one Harry is on. Remember purebloods are all related and Harry's father was a pureblood as well as Tom's mother.
**********************SPO ILERS******************** ************************* ************************* ************************* ************************* ************************* *********WOW!!!! That was by far, my favorite book of the series!!!!! There were so many awesome parts!!! I don't know if I had a favorite part, but it might have been when Harry goes "There are no more Horcruxes, it's just you and me", I was like Boo-yah! That whole part was amazing!!! I'm glad I was right about Snape too. I laughed pretty good when i read "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU *****." I was like whoal! Go Mrs. Weasley! I'm sure that all the members of M.A.M.M. were proud. There were a lot of really sad parts as well. I was totally not ready for Hedwig at the beginning(I was like OMG, NOOO). Besides Hedwig, the only one that really got me was Dobby's, and when Harry dug the grave and when he inscribed on the headstone "Here lies Dobby, a free elf", that was a tear jerker! I was sad when Lupin died but I kinda had an inevitable feeling that all the Marauders would die by that point, I wish Tonks could have lived, but then she would have been all alone, I guess. At the end of Ch. 34 I almost thought for a second that Harry died, but was like "wait, there's a lot more." So yeah I definitely LOVED THIS BOOK!! By far the best of the series. I do wish the epilogue would have been a little longer, but then again, I wish this wasn't the last book either. Can't believe I have to wait 3 years for it to be a movie! But I know it will be amazing!
I dont know... seems funny... though JKR has left quite a lot of holes if not mistakes.... thats why I think the book was rushed... she dint hv enough time. Remember the rumors abt she not being happy with the release dates... and she denied them, wll of course she had to... she is a professional
I loved it so mch. I have never in my life cried so much over a book. I didnt even cry over the Notebook, or any other soppy stories. but this... This was the most emotional reading I ahve ever had and I loved it so much. I want to capture these few moments Ive had, staring at those words wondering which one of the beloved character had reached their end, wondering when on earth Ron and Hermion would finally kiss, wondering if Harry was meant to die, if Ginny would ever see him again, what would happen, hanging on every single well worded phrase. I loved it. And I dont think there are words to describe just how much i am going to miss Harry, Ron ,hermione, Ginny, Fred, George, tonks, Lupin, Dumbledore and maybe even Snape and malfoy. This series has almost raised me, form whe I was about 8 years old, till now, nearly 10 years later, andI am incredibly grateful for JK Rowling, to have been who she is, and created such an echanting few books. I dont care what anyone says, I am a harry fan through and through and I will never forget this series. ok. wow. I just needed to vent. THIS BOOK RULED. end of extremely long comment. Lydia
Did anyone notice how the book answered a few of the questions on the last WOMBAT test? I thought that was fun.
I can't believe it's finally over, I mean, all of this big Harry Potter "adventure", us waiting for a new book every two year, thinking of theories, and all, but that was the best book of the series, and JK didn't fail to answer all of the most important questions. I don't think I've ever cried that much reading a book. But sometimes I couldn't even do so, because things were going so fast, all of these deaths and all. I even felt the need to take a few hours sleep this afternoon after the Pensieve stuff, like taking a deep breath before reading the final chapters. I missed the thing with the person who used magic late in life. I thought of Ted Tonks too but I couldn't remember if he was either Muggle or Muggleborn. I'll have to check... or come back on Mugglenet in a few days when someone will have done it for me ;) I loved "Not my daughter, you b**** !" too, that was the best line ever ;)
Oh, and i forgot to mention that cheesy and cringeworthy epilogue, for which I waited 8 years..! I expected to know what happened to ALL the remaining characters... she could have shown us a great physological scene with George, the remaining twin, or Teddy and Harry (both orphans from a very early age) and what happened to harry's lifeambition of becoming an auror? And.. hang on a minute.. Albus Severus? It's just so cheesy. I want to cry now, i really do :(
Clash: didn't Aberforth say he got the mirror off mundungus? also, the reason harry saw aberforth's eye was because when he was holding the shard of glass (at least the first time anyway) he was thinking "dumbledore" and as aberforth not only had the other mirror, but is the only remaining dumbledore, thats why harry saw something in the mirror . . .
yep... Snape doesnt become headmaster till when the trio is in Grimmauld Place.... so how is he talking to Dumbledore's portrait (and what does sitting behind his desk mean...)
Has anyone else heard rumors of J.K. writing a book on the time between the last chapter of DH and the Epiloge???
Hey people! Go to alsevpot.ecingraphix[dot] com to talk live with other Potter fans about the Seventh Book!!!
Ok, what did Hermione, Ron and Harry end up doing??? I have 5 billion other questions after I read this but this is the one thing that I would REALLY like to know from JKR. The epilogue bugged me SOOO MUCH!
I really thought it would have been perfect if Harry had actually died when he surrendered to Voldemort and then someone else killed Voldemort, or they both died right then. I think the whole thing about Voldy taking Harry's blood, although I understand it, made things more confusing and a little too far-fetched.
I'll have to admit up until the whole Sword in the Ice part, I thought 4 or 5 books were better but it was so amazingly amazing from then on that this is by far my fav. in the series!!!! Wow what a book just finished 45 mins ago.!! Dinner time now!
I just think JKR lost it... or maybe she complicated HP so much throughout the series, that she could not solve it. Anyhow the book was not the best.... noway...
I also don't understand how Nagini died. Did he die when Voldemort's Avada Kedavra backfired, too, or was it before then?
wasn't ted tonks the muggle that did magic late it life? in the 5th book sirius tells harry that tonks' mon got blasted off the family tree for marrying the muggle ted tonks. and in the 3rd chapter i believe of DH he fixes harry's ribs and tooth.

for dumbledors picture.. its easlt solved i think....... dumbledore always put his thoughts into a pensive and so did snape so i think that headmasters are required to document their thoughts so when they die the picture can b fused with their real memories
BLOODY BLOODY BRILLIANT!!!! ******SPOILERS****** *** ************************* ************************* *** By far the best book of all!!!!!! Loved - 'the bravest man Harry had ever known' line!!! I was so pleased when I realised the Doe was Snape & I love that he was Lily's best mate!!! Ron going 'flaming mental' was the best twist and kept my nerves sooooo on edge!! him and Hermione were so sweet! I can't believe the kiss didn't happen earlier!!! And Harry and Ginny - the nearly-sh*g ace. I Knew knew knew that she wouldn't kill the trio - well not permanently! The Deathly Hallows title, and what they turned out to be put such a good spin on all the horocrux arc of the story that everybody had theorised to death and very accurately at that - it was like she made R.A.B/ Locket/ Kreacher and The Scar so obvious because she knew she'd could throw us with Hallows and the tension of the war, oh yes and the twist that the 'glint in his eye' turned out to be was fantastic!!! Alll the deaths were so sad but it was Kreacher storming out with the elves that gave me my 1st burst of tears - hoe random. I want to know more more more!! Can't we have a nice funny 'friends' like series about Hr/Gn & R/Hm finally getting together getting married, Neville & Luna & other DA peeps popping in and out - I want the 19 years please Jo????????????
I've been reading this board all day and I think I'm in the minority. I think several scenes were too unbelievable or contrived. I did really enjoy Snape's memories and the sign at the Potter's house in Godric's Hollow. I think the whole concept of the Deathly Hallows could have been left out and it wouldn't have changed the story at all. I didn't see anyone do magic that hadn't before, and I think the thing about Harry having Lily's eyes was WAY overrated. I am so disappointed with the epilogue I can't even put it into words. Until around page 575 I wasn't even enjoying the book because I felt like the plot hadn't moved forward much at all. I think most of the big questions have been answered, but I'm really hoping I enjoy this book more on the second read.
ok....so i'm not quite sure how i feel about this.....i just feel like not everything was answered.......liek why is it so important that harry has lily's eyes??? and what did dudley see??? and who got magic later in life? and what did the potters do for a living? and i really wanted to know what happens to harry after, besides getting marries....i mean what do you do when your whole life has been prepping you to kill one man....god what do u do when something like that is over...lol OMG how sad is it that lily and james died at 21?!?!?!??! 21!!!! OMG i really would have liked more on the MAurauders i always really liked there story line...like if lily hated james so much how'd they end up together i started bawling when snape did the potronous and then said he would always love lily...omg
Deathstick, Nagini died when Neville chopped her head off.
I read a fan version of deathly hallows... cant believe how many things that dude got right! it was as if he writing an alternate version of DH after reading it... Lupin, nym dying... actually the whole part of nym following lupin lupin n harry fighting... The Snitch!!! gawd.... dumbledore's portrait suggesting hermione to give harry the snitch... for something... harry being the horcrux.. the sixth not seventh like rowling... and the biggest I think will be the part where Harry "meets" dumbledore after dying, at King's Cross... in this fan version harry meets dumbledore in Gryffindor common room... Harry also talk to his dead parents, lupin n sirius... Voldy takes over the ministry.. blah blah...
Can someone please tell me when Nagini died? Voldemort couldn't have died unless Nagini was killed.
Neville chopped off the snakes head when Voldy was telling everyone to surrender. Harry was playing dead.
Ted tonks is continuosly refered to as being a "muggleborn" as opposed to a "muggle" which almost definitely make him a wizerd
i'm dying to see a new pole :]
especially when harry 'died' i felt like; wtf? why make six books with mostly just nonsense in them.. i felt like the first 6 books were so.. er.. 'doesnt-matter-at-all' kinda... eh... dont know how to put it .. but i feel like much more happened in this book than in all the previous 6 together. but i guess they were just to build up the excitement to this on. doesnt mean I didn't like it though! It was verrryy very good endeed! not my favourite, but very good.. fine way to end things even though i'd prefered if harry had died at the same time as voldemort. kinda knew that wasnt going to happen, but daaaaamn i cried the whole chapter when harry had just realised he was going to die from the snape-memory.. that was sooooo sad! cant believe how many times i cried in this book: hedwigs death, halloween night voldy trying to kill harry(harry thinking it was james who had come to make purple smoke;(..) so sad! harry dying.. though i didn't cry when fred died .. dont know who.. ron didnt seem too sad either, guess he didnt have time to be sad. Overall very good book! I missed life at hogwarts a whole lot, cause those were the best parts of the previous books, but wtf, harry had a mission wich was accompliced ;)
After Voldemort puts the sorting hat on Neville and announces that everyone will be Slytherine and Neville basically says "Not ME!" Sorting hat goes up in flames, Neville is saved as fighting starts up again. Pulls the sword out of the sorting hat--due to it being a time of great need and courage, and he chops of Nagini's head. This is just before the last huge battle scene where Molly utters her famous line and takes on Bellitrex.
Deathstick... Nagini dying is on page 733. Neville whips out Gryffindors sword from the flaming sorting hat because he was a true Gryffindor. He turned and lopped of the snakes head as all hell broke loose. Hope that helps.
overall, good book. i loved most of it. and as to people who say the deaths are unexpected..its a war. there are supposed to be deaths, pain is supposed to caused. i absolutely bawled when lupin and tonks died, but i think it was more for the fact that they just had a baby than because i like their characters. i always suspected that snape had something for lily, and i thought it was brilliant how they had the same patronus. and the connection with harrys eyes and his mother..it was because of snape. when snape looked in harry's eyes, he saw lily, whom he loved. this book was great and totally unexpected in many ways. it was brilliant on many levels, although i was disappointed at some things. ..living in a tent? there are still so many unanswered questions. and questions that have popped up because of this book. whered the durselys go and what happened to them? theres so many. the epilogue was "cute". i really wished that it had included more on luna, neville, and the rest of the weasleys. i hope that jo answers a lot of questions in interviews or on her wedsite or that she writes some other kind of book.
The book was AMAZING. so sad its all over i've never cried so much in life.
Cant wait for the movie.
I was a big fan of everything in the book except... I had a problem with Ron leaving. Just about threw the book across the room. Actually I momentarily closed it, looked at JK's name on the spine and asked, "Are you kidding?' The other part was the epilogue. I read it online before hand and was utterly convinced it wasn't her writing because it was so poorly done. Imagine my horror when having to read it. It was a bit of a let down. I was hoping for one of those all encompassing epilogues telling greater details about the years to follow, not just some random 15 minutes 19 years later. I guess in a way it brought the books full circle. I can't wait for the next two movies though. There is a lot of potential for some excellent movies. Bet the last one is rated R. Oh, and I loved the Ginny/Harry about to get it on scene before Ron rolls in a screws it up!
I think JKR missed the chance to beat Tolkein to be the most beloved novel of Britain.. In comparison, The Return of the King, the last book of Lord of the Rings was much fitting end to an epic. Harry Potter falls short of being an epic and confirms to what it started out as, a brilliant children's book
I think ppl are right about TED TONKS being the one to do magic later in life. BTW, how on earth did people miss Neville taking the Gryffindor sword out of the sorting hat and killing Nagini? Um, part of the climax of the book?
Spoilers.. Obviously--- Yes, the book was absolutely fantastic. There were so very many parts that I cried. I think the one that really seemed to get me was the conversation when they were in "The Forest Again." Harry was talking to his dad and said, "You'll stay with me?" "Untill the very end," said James. Another one that really got me was the love Snape had for Lily. That was really sad and cute. The final thing that really just brought me to complete and udder tears was the fact that Harry and Ginny named their son Albus Severus. I seriously lost it. So, thank you JKR for all of the fond memories we will carry without throughout the rest of our lives. And to all the mourning Harry fans out there- we know there will be more, we will find a way.
Okay just for anyone who hasn't figured it out yet I'm going to let you know what is most likely the answer to one of the unresolved issues. Who is the witch/wizard who performs magic late in lif under desperate circumstances? --- Merope Gaunt. 17 is adult in their world. She was thought to be a squib by Marvolo and yet once free from him finally managed to use magic properly (not counting the wand misfire during Bob Odgin's visit). JK never said it was a main character or that it happened during the present story. I could be wrong but it is an example of it happening.
best book out of the lot, loved it,only thing i didnt like was the 19 years later bit i was like wtf!does anyone know how neville get the gryffindor sword to kill nagini if the griphook took it at gringotts and was killed by voldemort?
it was dudley who produced magic later in life for all who asked above... HE LOVED... or felt remorse for the things he did to harry as well...
I repeat this for 20th time perhaps... I suggested Ted Tonks theory, but I did make a mistake. Ted Tonks is referred to as a muggleborn as opposed to a muggle... making him a wizard and not a muggle... so basically it wasnt him
And after all this time we finally realise that the bravest and strongest of all people is Severus Snape. He was the one who had to endure the most, living the the house where his parents fought, having to work for Voldemort when it was him who killed Lily, seeing Harry all the time, and he cared for Dumbledore and had to be the one to kill him. He was so strong. RIP Sev, we love you!
wait theres a video attached to the 101 podcast??? how do i see it???
***SPOILER ALERT*** I've never felt so many emotions at once! I'm devastated and happy all at once, and I feel as though I've lost a friend! I love escaping into this world and have truly come to love these characters. I am heartbroken at the deaths of every person fighting against Voldemort. Book 7 is definitely tied as one of my favorites. I liked the epilogue, but wish it would have answered more questions. I've read a few posts by people wondering if Neville and Luna got together. My guess is that it's Luna and Dean. The reason: When people are leaving the Room of Requirement to prepare for battle, it says that Dean holds back and holds out his hand to Luna, which she takes. It makes sense, they spent several weeks together at Bill and Fleur's. And I felt like cheering out loud when Mrs. Weasley rushed to battle Bellatrix, also when Kreacher led the house-elves into battle! I did cry throughout the book, but cried hardest at the deaths of Hedwig, Dobby, and Fred. I was far too shocked (still am), at the deaths of Tonks and Lupin. Thank you for bringing this wonderful story to us JK!
