Harry Potter Top Grossing Motion Picture Franchise
Warner Brothers has announced this evening that the Harry Potter series is the largest-grossing film franchise to date globally, surpassing Star Wars and and James Bond. Totaling $4.47 billion in ticket sales (with two films left to go, WB points out), several high-ups at Warner Brothers are quoted in the press release:In making the announcement, Alan Horn [President & Chief Operating Officer] said, “It would be an understatement to say we are proud of the success of the Harry Potter films. We also want to congratulate all of the extraordinary actors, filmmakers and artists who have shared this remarkable cinematic journey with us.”Of note, Variety has published an article comparing the Potter film franchise to the other big ones:
Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution, said, “It is a thrill to see the Harry Potter franchise reach this unparalleled mark, and, with two movies yet to come, it is amazing to think what heights the franchise could reach by the end of the decade.
Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, Warner Bros. Pictures President of International Distribution, added, “This worldwide box office record once again proves that the appeal of the Harry Potter movies knows no border, no age limit, and no language barrier. Each of the five films has captured the hearts and sparked the imagination of audiences everywhere.”
Bond, which dates back to 1962, has generated $4.44 billion worldwide and the "Star Wars" pics have pulled down $4.23 billion since the first release in 1977. None of the tallies account for inflation or rising ticket prices. To read the press release from Warner Brothers, click the link below.
And domestically the "Star Wars" franchise still far outpaces the boy wizard. All told, the "Star Wars" pics have grossed $2.18 billion, while the "Harry Potter" franchise has grossed $1.41 billion. But then there are still two more "Potters" to go.
And all three have generated millions upon millions in downstream ancillary coin for their studios, once homevideo and TV revenue are added into the tallies.
Press Release:
WARNER BROS. PICTURES’ HARRY POTTER FILMS COMBINE TO
BECOME THE BIGGEST FILM FRANCHISE IN HISTORY
Harry Potter Film Franchise Surpasses James Bond
and Star Wars, With Two Films Yet to Come
BURBANK, CA, September 10, 2007 – With the success of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” Warner Bros. Pictures’ Harry Potter films have now become, worldwide, the top-grossing motion picture franchise in history. The announcement was made today by Barry Meyer, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer and Alan Horn, President & Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros.
The combined worldwide box office gross for the five Harry Potter films to date is in excess of $4.47 billion, surpassing the box office totals of all 22 James Bond films and the six “Star Wars” movies.
This impressive record comes even as “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” is still going strong in theatres around the globe, and with two more highly anticipated Harry Potter films—“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”—still in the offing.
In addition to holding the franchise box office record, all five of the Harry Potter films have the distinction of being among the 20 top-grossing box office hits of all time.
In making the announcement, Alan Horn said, “It would be an understatement to say we are proud of the success of the Harry Potter films. We also want to congratulate all of the extraordinary actors, filmmakers and artists who have shared this remarkable cinematic journey with us.”

Well, like, duh.
shut up ginny, i wasnt agreeing with u, i just think dan acts a s a repellent for the movies.... and lupin has a hitler mustache, so nothing more can be said about that....
helloaza?
GO HARRY POTTER!!!
Coolness :)

Yay for them out-doing james bond AND starwars!! That's insane!!!
Sea Anemone coolie fries
hey!
heck yes harry potter is way better than star wars of james bond!!!!!!1
Nice great accomplishment for Harry Potter and is like a great applause for the whole thing! Can't believe I actually know people that hate or don't like it though like they don't give it enough credit. Surprised that it didn't beat Starwars or like everything in all categories. But still gotta give Kudos to J.K rowling for writing the thing like it made me want to read again but now it's s hard to find anything to read that is as good or just close to as the Harry potter books.
OMG That is so cool! 118?
I knew we could do it!! Yay fans of Harry Potter!!!:)
hey siriuslee, they made a post about the virginia tech tradgedies, and correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure mugglenet said something about it a year ago. basically, it's all over the news (the only thing bascally), so i thought there might be a little memorial, reminder message on mugglenet so we can comment about it, and bond.
its not like its saying much to overtake star wars or bond. back when star wars was released movies used to cost like what 4 bucks tops, now they are close to 8 dollars, it shouldn't be much of a challenge.
i'm so tired.
:) Im about to go to school. Wewt. Not. Uh, anyways I think the actors who play Draco, Lucius, Hagrid, Sirius, Lupin, Hermione, Ron, Weasleys, aaaaaand Tonks are good. Dan (Im sorry) he's not that great of an actor.. I almost laughed at him in the 5th movie.
I agree with you superfish - I reckon they are awesome actors esp Rupert Grint - he rox! anyway but Dan isnt too bad - On Extras he was awesome! like really funny - i just rekon he is not up to doing really intense scenes like in OOTP where he had to act all frustrated and upset - but I still love dan!
I think Daniel Radcliffe CAN act - and that includes doing intense scenes - because I saw Equus and he was very good in that (to be honest it did surprise me that he was as good as he was because his acting abilities just don't seem to come across in the HP films... I've no idea why).
OMG!!! I HATE SCHOOL!!!!! I'm sorry everyone!!!! School keeps me so outrageously busy I only have time to read the news quickly and then leave!! I really hope to hang in the chat boxes again soon, (oops i meant comment boxes...heheh ) but for now I'll keep popping up occasionally so you all know I haven't died (G-d forbid) lol ok luv ya!!!! Keep the chats going!!!! HP ALWAYS AND FOREVER!
THe article says it doesnt count inflation of cinema ticket prices. So in reality Harry Potter isnt really the biggest money making franchise it was just made at a time when you get charged 10 dollars instead of 5 to go see a movie.
But then, if they HAD accounted for inflation and rising ticket prices, I doubt HP would surpass Bond and Star Wars. Don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter though.
OMGOMG!!! Good for HP!! :D :D :D Yay!! JK must be so proud! I mean, it's her masterpiece afterall, Warner Bros just made the movie (which is really cool - but there are disappointing mistakes). Like LaurenB, however, don't get me wrong - for me, HARRY POTTER FOREVER!!! :D :D :D YAY!!!
No surprise that Warner Brothers douches up everything and doesn't take the time to thank Joanne. Without her brilliance, the WB "powers that be" would be crawling in the mud. We're the proudest and craziest fans, nothing wrong with that. If only the unimaginative haters could get a tiny slice in our magical worlds.
omg way to go harry potter! i have no opposition to star wars, but i still want harry potter to beat it! and im sure it will! but then again, i wasnt too surprised to hear it...

One thing that is not taken into account, is inflation. Potter doesn't hold a candle to Bond or even Star Wars when you adjust for todays movie prices. Analyzing the success of a movie based on Gross profits is a horrible way of looking at the success of a franchise. Not that I don't love HP, but just look at Star Wars. Adjusted for inflation, the gross profits from Episode 4 alone were 1.1 Billion dollars. Sorcerer's Stone, the most profitable Potter movie, grossed 367 Million when adjusted for inflation. (317 Million unadjusted) So is it fair to say that Star Wars has 3 times as many fans as Potter does? If you have the same fan base going back to see each successive movie (since no other star wars movie or potter movie drew in more fans) then I would say yes. Again, the HP books are one of the all time great fantasy series, and a group of decent movies as well, but if you adjust the Bond franchise Grosses for inflation your looking at a number well over 20 Billion.... Sorry to burst your bubble, but this WB report doesn't mean squat except that everyone is making money off HP... it has nothing to do with the series being more popular... (though I am glad JKR is getting payed)
WOW we surpassed Star Wars!!! That's definitely gotta count for something.
