JK Rowling and WB sue Indian community
JK Rowling and WB sue Indian community CBC News, based in Canada, is reporting that an Indian community is being sued over their replica of the Hogwarts castle. Made out of canvas and papier mâché, the castle was going to be used in an upcoming festival. However, a representative for the community groups claims they had no idea they needed to seek permission. From CBC:

The group had also hired artists to create a replica of the Hogwarts Express, the train that Harry Potter and his young wizard friends take to the school, as well as life-sized models of the main figures in the best-selling series of books.

The group has spent about $30,000 for its replica, called a pandal.

"It's just a theme.… We have also modelled the Titanic and no-one sued us," said another organizer, Robin Mukherjee.

A lawyer will try to fight the lawsuit on Friday. For the full story, click here.

Posted by minu Oct 12th 2007

this is ridiculous...

Posted by nimagraven Oct 12th 2007

My, my. Isn't that funny. Little miss "I'm embarrassed about my money" is sueing for more money.... Funny how this is a religious festival that is designed not to make money and yet she wants to pinch into the purses of people. I thought she was a devout Christian? Oh, wait, that was a conveniant lie.... Probably. I read on one site that they'd done a Titanic theme and they weren't sued. True, Titanic is a historical event without an IP, but it depends on how far they actually pushed the envelope on that one. Hmmmm. Bit rich isn't it? Excuse my crappy pun. As you all know, anyway, I've never worshipped the ground Rowling has walked on and this just proves my point even more so. She has the trigger happy sue button. Maybe she should go live in America before she gives Britain a worse name than it already has...

Here's a link to a BBC article that has slightly more info than the one at the post. Maybe someone can add this in at front for further info: http://news.bbc. co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/704 0191.stm Anyway, I don't need to say how much I agree with everyone... cause I do. The BBC article mentions how its actually the Indian-based publisher (Penguin India) who is suing on behalf of JKR and WB. Though WB (WB London offices) is also quoted directly in the article... so we know WB is knee-deep in this. JKR, I hope for your sake you come out and go against this. Release a statement saying you don't want to go along. Even more, say you'll pay the 50,000 fine the unlucky "Indian community" has to pay WB and its lawyers. That'll show us we mean more to you than your money. You could even go a step further and actually pay whatever royalty or fee the Indian community has to pay to KEEP their 'pandal' up. If happiness is worth more than money, then prove it. Everyone else who reads this -- please email JKR or leave a message in her website with a simple message: "JKR, we know you are against this lawsuit, but are powerless against WB. Please help by paying the fine this poor Indian community will pay to WB's lawyers." For those with a meaner streak... you can add "Or if you don't want to do anything, you can... .

Posted by Wolfstar Oct 12th 2007

I agree with everyone who's said there must be more to this story. It just doesn't make sense otherwise. It really doesn't seem like JK's style to go suing random, relatively poor communities just because she can.

Good Lord, have they not made enough money already? Geez. I'm dissappointed. :(

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 12th 2007

whats jk's email anyways?

Posted by toonmili Oct 12th 2007

I think they are going over board here... Jk needs to stop all the sueing. She is looking selfish. I better watchout with all the fanfiction I write. They may want to sue me too.

Posted by CommDirector Oct 12th 2007

I think we can contact her via her literary agen: info AT christopherlittle DOT net

Posted by toonmili Oct 12th 2007

I reallly hope she comes out against this. It does not look good at all.

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 12th 2007

hi guys!!! lidietta he emailed me and said hes really busy so he doesnt get on the computer much...

Posted by silverdoe115 Oct 12th 2007

Well really..it's absurd!!..wat profit r they gonna make by using the theme just for a festival??..any ways the main interest is the festival...the theme being an add on...wonder what's all the stupid fuss on such a petty issue about?..what a let down for the people with the festival just a few days away....

Posted by lidietta Oct 12th 2007

oh, I see, it's been since this summer since I saw him online... ok, g2g... becky, have a nice weekend, ari, I'll see you tomorrow, right? =)

Posted by toonmili Oct 12th 2007

OMG. All these replies from the people from India are making me so sad. To think about all the dissapointed kids... This is really looking bad. If the continue with this action. I am not going to see the next movie. As much as I love Alan Rickman ... I would withhold my money. WB made millions from OOTP in India, is that how they repay them... by ruining their special day of festivities. Jk is really looking like Grinch who stole Durga Puja.

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 12th 2007

cya lidietta!!!!! yea ill prolly be here tomorrow... or maybe not.... im pretty busy tomorrow so i might not... sorry!! :)

Posted by koel_ac Oct 12th 2007

Hey, i am from Kolkata and i live in the area where the pandal or the replica of hogwarts has been created. I am a huge fan of hp but come on, this is just chaep and petty. They make pandals on imp. themes every year...some years back it was Titanic and last year it was the columbia space shuttle tragedy...it's just to give a new feel to the celebrations and it is so not meant for economic gains. Seriously, warner brothers and even jkr have hit completely below the belt. It's ridiculous.

Posted by lilbecky8 Oct 12th 2007

cya lidietta!!! hiya ari how are you?

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 12th 2007

im good!! i emailed u back on mni btw... daaang im soo tired!! i was sleeping and i was having this good dream and i heard april screaming at the top of her lungs so i woke up...

Posted by CommDirector Oct 12th 2007

Posted by HarryandGinnyforlife Oct 12th 2007

Hmm... There must be more to it. I don't think Jo is that petty. I can understand a big company like Warner Bros. might do that, but there must be another reason we don't know about. After all, I don't think they'd make such a big deal if it was just paper mache -- there must be something else to prompt a lawsuit. After all, the public doesn't usually get the entire story with these things.

Posted by CassMaxwell13 Oct 12th 2007

This almost makes you want to sue the high school that did harry potter the musical. if there not makeing money off it then LEAVE INDIA ALONE!

Posted by rathu Oct 12th 2007

what???? they were just trying to have some good natured fun!!! im sure they were all great fans. why does jkr treat her fans this way?!?! i mean.. u just cant go around suing ppl for things like this.

Posted by lilbecky8 Oct 12th 2007

i will read it right now, what was april screaming about?

Posted by indigoxblu Oct 12th 2007

They have built the replica and stuff for their carnval, not to get money off it. Why sue then? It's more like tribute having spent so much money on creating it. Guess we'll hear Jo's side on the story sometime later hopefully...

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 12th 2007

i dunno just at my brother about nothing.... ruined my beauty sleep *glares* lol!

Posted by lilbecky8 Oct 12th 2007

awwww that always annoying!!! i say wake up at like 5am tomorrow, creep into her room and scream into her ear nice and loud. LOL

Posted by sirius_lee Oct 12th 2007

lol!!! maybe i should! of course i will get in trouble for doing uneccesary tings to someone that hasnt done anything to me... pshhhhhhh yea right!!! lol!! i gotta go but ill be back later peace!!
