Mother appeals decision to keep HP in schools
Mother appeals decision to keep HP in schools A few months ago, mother-of-four Laura Mallory filed several complaints against all six Harry Potter books, saying they included "evil themes, witchcraft, demonic activity, murder, evil blood sacrifice, spells and teaching children all of this." Even though she hasn't read any of the books because they're "too long," she noted that it would be difficult for children to distinguish between the fantastical events in the books and real life, and attempted to have them removed from school libraries in Gwinnett County. Although this is true to an extent, the dark side of the books are portrayed in a bad light; no one thinks Voldemort's the hero. More importantly, Harry Potter teaches kids (and adults alike) how good can overcome evil.

On April 20th, scores of educators, parents and students showed their support for the books in a public hearing, and both the local school and system media committees concurred. In fact, the support for the books remaining in school libraries was so strong that hearing officer Su Ellen Bray offered ten reasons why they shouldn't be removed and on May 11th, the Gwinnett Board of Education voted that the novels should stay.

Mallory appealed this decision on Friday, and the legal services division of the Georgia Department of Education will now determine the next step in this debate.

Hmmm.... pretty awesome!

Posted by Aisling Jun 13th 2006

Hmmm if she isn't going to read teh books then there is no point to her trying to get them removed...Some people!!! *sighs*

Posted by emilily Jun 13th 2006

They should force this woman to read the books, or at least the first one, before they let her appeal. Seriously. How can anyone even waste time on a case like this?

Posted by captain_alex Jun 13th 2006

This is so stupid! I don't believe this woman is even appealing the decision, it's going to be the same outcome. And of course, she hasn't read the books. Typical!

Posted by silverlala Jun 13th 2006

If she can't take the time out to actually read the books, at least, she has no room to complain about hearsay. darn woman.... The power of Harry Potter readers amaze me every day :)

Posted by swedenrose3 Jun 13th 2006

That woman shuold be soooooo proud of herself. We all know that Harry Potter is by far the biggest threat to the world's children! Honestly, the does she need a life much??

Posted by xXSophieXx Jun 13th 2006

i really cant stand this woman! how can she judge a book that she hasnt even read... completely stupid! lol.

Posted by Serpensortir Jun 13th 2006

It's ridikkulus! If she can't be bothered to read the books then how can she have an objective view of their content? Although if she thinks that children can't differentiate between fiction and real life then there is something wrong!

Posted by TheRealLifeHermioneGranger Jun 13th 2006

i was following this case before... and I'm shocked at how many people took her seriously. In this country, we are innocent until proven guilty and the same should go for the books. She can't say that the books are guilty of promoting....... until she has proven (disproven) that by READING THEM!!! oh, and by the way, I started reading the series (with my dad) when I was 6-7, but i started reading them myself when i was about 8 or so. They're NOT too long!

Posted by amandeep_sagoo Jun 13th 2006

She is soooo. stupid, i hope she knows the dictionary definition of fiction, and anyways evil, witchcraft etc.., what more do we want

Posted by Will Jun 13th 2006

She is plotting evil themes, making witchcraft, leading demonic activity, cometting murder, spilling evil blood sacrifice, and teaching spells and teaching to children. It's not Harry. Anyways, she hasn't even read them, IDIOT. I'm so angry at her. Grrrr....

Posted by silverlala Jun 13th 2006

JK Rowling is our Cult leader

Posted by tabitoo Jun 13th 2006

SOMEBODY has way too much extra time on her hands. I think there are many more ways she can devote her extra time than fighting against a book she hasn't even read.

Posted by EiSeL Jun 13th 2006

i actually live in gwinnett county, georgia and, although dont attend public school there, it still really bothers me. these potter-haters who havent even read the books psst me off. they have no right to criticize something they dont even know.

Posted by reddiej Jun 13th 2006

This woman never ceases to sound like a complete imbecile.

Posted by Cherie Jun 13th 2006

All this woman is doing is actually PROMOTING the books. People that have not read the books will do so now in order to see if what she is saying is true (which we all know is not). Some people have to have something to complain about and it appears this is the topic of the year for this woman. I'm not concerned with the lawsuit, I know what the decision will be from the state board of education of Georgia: UNFOUNDED.

Posted by aloneinshadow Jun 13th 2006

On behalf of Georgia, I'm sorry. They don't all turn out like her. Just the in-breds.

Posted by missinconspicuous Jun 13th 2006

How can you comment on what a book tells children when you haven't even read said book? This woman is so stupid. I mean, come on! Some fictional character who has no control over his hair is going to single-handedly bring down an entire generation of children? I think not...

Posted by kprestonbrgs Jun 13th 2006

That women and the others who have supported her are truely the kind of people who have slipped through the education system and all they have learnt is their parents 'strict beliefs'. The clearly have an overwhelming fear of imagination, and also a clear inablity to communicate with their children. not once whilest I was a child did I believe things I read, saw in films/on TV/in video games to be true, because my parents alwys emphasised that they weren't real. If she isn't prepared to nurture her children in a well rounded way then rather than withdrawing books from the education system the local council should be withdrawing children from her care. also, if she bothered to read the books she would find a way of 'proovin' what she says is 'true'. rant over lol =)

Posted by ECDWman1 Jun 13th 2006

OK,if she is going to complain about the books why doesen't she read them first? lol it is too long!!! oh it is only like 700 pages for crying out loud!

Posted by Helene Jun 13th 2006

Sounds like she has a little too much time on her hands-----Someone please get this woman a life!!

Posted by fabricio429 Jun 13th 2006

Oh My God.. this woman has nothing else to do.. her husband should give something to do while he's working because she really gets bored at home doesn't she!

Posted by lumos_aeternum Jun 13th 2006

Well, obviously she's lying about it being too long. It's evil, to her, so she doesn't want to be contaminated by it. Even if HP is your enemy, you ought to know your enemy. I know she won't see this, as this site must be devil spawn (not to me Emerson); regardless, here is my simple message to her: "Read the books you're trying to ban." Duh.

Posted by teengirlsquad Jun 13th 2006

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! she hasn't read the books becaus ethey are TOO LONG?!? *snicker* says something about her mental capacity. i feel so sorry for any kids of hers having to grow up with a control freak mother like that.

Posted by pippin Jun 13th 2006

I'm guessing she hasnt actually read the books

Posted by lunaluvgood14322 Jun 13th 2006

how can she even say that?!?!?! she hasnt even READ THE BOOKS!!!!!!!!! i have to agree with teengirlsquad.

Posted by nohara_megami Jun 13th 2006

All this reminds me of is the guy who is arguing that using God in the Pledge of Alligence is going againist his daughter's religion, who is only a kid and not a Athiest like him, and wants it out of public schools. That guy just screamed idiot with his methods, not subject, much like this woman is now. It is the same with this lady, she is just sturring trouble to get attention and sound like a (begin scarsam) 'rational' parent because a book does not follow the 'guidelines' that she thinks they should, which obviously would be nothing that is not 'perfect' (end scarsam) The fact that she has not read the books makes her an IDIOT in the worst kind of way, the kind that toots her horn and is making herself the dumb one. I think it is so sad that parent's like this exist, but then again her kind reminds me of how wonderful my parents are^_^ And also, with how the last hearning went, it is not going to be banned. Unless they get a flux of parents from a close-minded place move there suddenly, it is not going to happen.

Posted by potterrulz Jun 13th 2006

i totally agree wid everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HARRY POTTER ROX and no one can ban it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by EllieWobbles Jun 13th 2006

If she hasn't read the books, than she obviously knows nothing about which she speaks, so she can just can it.

Posted by karaz Jun 13th 2006

Ugh. This woman is clearly out for her 15 minutes of fame. She hasn't even read the books? *facepalm* Because they are too long? *headdesk* I hope the she gets saddled with the court costs for this stupidity. And I really feel bad for her kids. Imagine this is the lady raising you?

Posted by THE_NADIA Jun 13th 2006

what a load of crap. i really hate people like that. ugh it sets me off and i like just wanna punch them in the face. *_grr_*

Posted by muggle007 Jun 13th 2006

i am so proud at all the abuse towards Laura Mallory posted. but it's not her foult, some people are born loosers. She has really chosen her scapegoat well, hasn't she? JK R. what a troll (thats Laura Mallory, not JKR;the troll, getit?oh shut up me). perhaps in book 7 we'll see a character called Lura Mollaree convert from a HP critic to HP groupie. hmm not likely.

Posted by jerod Jun 13th 2006

lol about not reading the books she said "I don’t have to read an entire pornographic magazine to know it’s obscene" i never thought i'd see HP associated with porno!

Posted by PrioriIncantatem Jun 13th 2006

this lady is a complete and utter idiot. Ok, that sounded a bit harmful, but still. she should really read the books herself before judging them. She is probably going on the assumption they are evil because there are some people who, granted, do not like them. I have one other thing to say to this, If you can read a book in two days i.e.) Order of the Phoenix or Half-Blood Prince, then they are not too long!

Posted by Strider_of_Eire Jun 13th 2006

2800 Pages. That's the EXACT number of pages in the british versions of the books. Everyone here read this number of pages at least once when reading the series did you think it was long? Here we come to this woman's problem - she is scared of reading MORALLY complete books. Books which instill a warm, fuzzy feeling inside you so much that, even if the world is going to Hell in a hand basket thanks to Dubya and company (Both Good and Evil) the books still pull you away from all that and immerse the reader in a place to find traditional values: such as family, friendship, and doing what is right not what is easy. This Woman cannot be allowed win as doing so would be akin to signing all rational thought over to a chimp and letting him run a country. Let them all know WE WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN!

Posted by Lillibet Jun 13th 2006

As a devoutly Christian HP fan that went to a Christian school, I have encountered a lot of anti-HP sentiment, some more rational than others (yes, there are rational objectors, i can see their point, i just don't agree). But this woman has almost irretrieveably lampooned whatever credibility she had by stating that she hasn't read them - not because of her moral objection, not because of her fear of the occult influences in it, but.... Because. they're. too. long. Oh dear me. Honestly... I can't think of much more to express the stupidity of this.

Posted by kitty_travers Jun 13th 2006

In my view HBP wasn't long enough! If I lived in the Georgia I would be horrified at this woman. Doesn't she understand the world has a tainted enough view of the the southern US without it's bored housewives trying to ban books they haven't read.

Posted by bwaaahh Jun 13th 2006

typical bible thumper attitude. they always run thier mouths before they get the whole story.

Posted by murphylove Jun 13th 2006

That is so stupid in way to many ways. And to show her stupidness she hasn't even read the books cause there to long. what a WONDERFUL parent. I can't believe people can be like that and ruin the funfor so many others. GOSH THAT MAKES ME MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by HermyG_1300 Jun 13th 2006

*Explodes* But I'm glad the school board showed at least some sense or I would have been quite ashamed to be a Georgian. In fact, the woman kind of makes me feel that way...they were too long...Well if they're too long for her, then by Lord everyone should be happy because that means kids are no longer afraid of long books. PS Kids know the difference between fact and fiction and "playing pretend" is most certainly not the practice of Satan.

Posted by colourmeconfused Jun 13th 2006

Eh, I feel bad for her. She might have been brought up that way herself, and she's probably actually doing it out of love because she fears that her own children (along with others) will go to the evil, nasty scary Hell that she was repeatedly warned about as a little girl. It's sad that she's probably teaching this to her kids, though, and I'd love for her to be able to read some of the many essays (along with the actual books, heh) which bring out the Christian side of the books. Maybe she'd see differently. Maybe I'm naive, though. Just... I don't wanna judge her too harshly, because the fact is; we all know this case will get thrown out anyway. There's no need to be mean to her about it.

Posted by princess_horcrux Jun 13th 2006

I know that parents are supposed to be embarrassing, but this takes the biscuit. Harry Potter is not evil, it is a FANTASY book, with many loyal fans. I'm a christian, but i am totally obsessed with the books, it annoys me to know there are christians out there who feel they need to be so against something that teaches children to do the right thing. GET A GRIP WOMAN!

Posted by susanova Jun 13th 2006

hey, aloneinshadow, be careful... they might DixieChick you! ha-ha... seriously though, I feel sorry for this woman because she has exactly half the story but that's enough to make her get her shorts in knot and cause a lot of turmoil. She's not interested in knowing all the facts because that might actually force her to do some critical thinking. I feel sorry for her kids, not because she's so narrow-minded, but because she's probably raising them to be the same way. hmmm, books are too long, eh? how long is the Bible? betcha read that...

Posted by Syonnain Jun 13th 2006

Bwahahahaaa!! That last bit of information was priceless!!

Posted by kan Jun 13th 2006

how can u judge sumthg......., u dont even no abt......!!!!!!!!!thats sick and dumb....poor laura mallory....she cant even njoy hp bcoz of her stupid mom!!!

Posted by katiewayt Jun 13th 2006

I guess if the books are "too long" she must only read picture books. Also, it is one thing to not let your children read books you do not approve of, but to impose your views and beliefs on other persons is wrong.

Posted by RavenclawSephie Jun 13th 2006

Too long? I hate it when people argue from ignorance. It's amazing how quick people are to judge something they have no clue about.

Posted by grawp Jun 13th 2006

it fantasy you nut to long i know a 2nd grader ywho has read them

Posted by foreverstrange Jun 13th 2006

Ok, this woman really needs to get a grip. This is the most false accusation I've ever witnessed, I mean HOW THE HELL DO YOU CAST OUT A BOOK YOU'VE NEVER EVEN READ?????? What a moron. Sorry to write out insults, but this woman frustrates me. Grrr woman, grr..

Posted by DaliGirl Jun 13th 2006

No big suprise here. We've got lots of close-minded people like this in the US, which is rather unfortunate. In a country where freedom is the key word it is really sad that she is trying to ban books, she is really just walking in the footsteps of people like the mullahs in Iran or the Taliban and other supressive regimes. In America and other democracy-loving countries, it is simply unacceptable for one person to use their own beliefs as the standard to measure what others should or should not do. People like this need to effofff and worry about their own kids and not try to force their beliefs onto other parents and their kids. The most ridiculous part of it all is that she hasn't even read the books herself. After reading "Reading Lolita in Tehran" I really came to appreciate how important freedom is, especially with regards to something so simple as the freedom to read a book without the threat of death by public stoning.
