Mother appeals decision to keep HP in schools
Mother appeals decision to keep HP in schools A few months ago, mother-of-four Laura Mallory filed several complaints against all six Harry Potter books, saying they included "evil themes, witchcraft, demonic activity, murder, evil blood sacrifice, spells and teaching children all of this." Even though she hasn't read any of the books because they're "too long," she noted that it would be difficult for children to distinguish between the fantastical events in the books and real life, and attempted to have them removed from school libraries in Gwinnett County. Although this is true to an extent, the dark side of the books are portrayed in a bad light; no one thinks Voldemort's the hero. More importantly, Harry Potter teaches kids (and adults alike) how good can overcome evil.

On April 20th, scores of educators, parents and students showed their support for the books in a public hearing, and both the local school and system media committees concurred. In fact, the support for the books remaining in school libraries was so strong that hearing officer Su Ellen Bray offered ten reasons why they shouldn't be removed and on May 11th, the Gwinnett Board of Education voted that the novels should stay.

Mallory appealed this decision on Friday, and the legal services division of the Georgia Department of Education will now determine the next step in this debate.

Look on the bright side, at least we know Umbridge survives the series.

Posted by Boss Jun 13th 2006

So...she's never read it, but it's evil. Hmmm. What right does she have to say that since she doesn't approve of the book, nobody's kid can read it? Maybe she should just hush up and not allow her kids to read it, not hvae it taken away from everyone because she's too close-minded to actually sit down a read a book because it's "too long" *rolls eyes*

Posted by Aquifer Jun 13th 2006

Theres not much need to fuss over some uninformed biggot like this. My mother had to deal with similar problems twenty years ago when my five older brothers all got into Dungeons and Dragons. People said they were becoming evil and cultist. Last time I checked, they were all sucessfull and popular school teachers. My mother has no problems what-so-ever with Harry Potter and is possibly a bigger fan than anybody I know, except me of course. She laughed openly at this article. Some people.....

Posted by Lynn Jun 13th 2006

Never read it? God,she's utterly pathetic! She pisses me off *rolls eyes*

Posted by Maheema Jun 13th 2006

Oh dear, the things people say out of ignorance... how can she be taken seriously if she ADMITS that has nothing taken from the books to back up her claim? All she know is that it's about magic... don't see anyone banning Macbeth there somehow...

Posted by Jayne Jun 13th 2006

she's probably illiterate

this is SO STUPID.. no wait SHES SO STUPID shes juss hatin caus shes stuck down there while Jo is a BILLIONAIRE

Posted by sccerchik06 Jun 13th 2006

thats a load of rubbish the Harry Potter books are just showing a hero's quest and she should really read them first before trying to ban them. Go to all the ppl who support Harry Potter!!!

Posted by jbmp1390 Jun 13th 2006

I don't have time to give a proper comment on this, as I have to go commit some blood sacrifice.

Posted by Smiley Jun 13th 2006

I wonder what she thinks of another book with evil themes, murder, spells, witchcraft; perhaps you've heard of it... The Wizard of Oz? And yet I don't see her trying to ban that. *Sigh* That evil, evil Glinda.

ahahahahahahahahaha. HP fans triumph again! take that!

I live in Alabama right in the heart of the bible belt. There is always going to be SOMEONE who doesn't "approve" of what you read. I can't tell you how many times by several different people have told me that I'm going to Hell for reading HP, The Da Vinci Code, and playing D&D. I went to a Christian school and when HP 3 came out in the theater I bought advanced tickets from the boyscouts only to find out that they were a troop from that school and they were selling tickets outside my church. I went back to visit my sixth grade teacher at that same school only to find out that HP was on their reading list. I feel sorry for the people that don't give this book the time of day because it really is a very moral boosting book. Sure it's got some bad guys in it but lets face it so does Cinderella, and lets not forget The Wizard of Oz. Thes list goes on people pick and choose what is ok and what isn't. Unfortunately HP fell in the NOT category for a lot of people and we just have to fight to prove them wrong. I refuse to talk to anyone about their one sided argument I tell them if they want to tell me I'm doing something wrong fine but have all the facts, read the book.

Posted by PreciousRoy Jun 13th 2006

This is happening in my backyard. Clearly she hasn't bothered to study the thing she accuses of evil... because she thinks it might spiritually harm her. I would ask her the following questions (and will provide her answeres, as I would guess) and my own rebuttals: TO WHAT SPECIFIC ACTS IN THE HP SERIES OF BOOKS DO YOU OBJECT? "There's blood sacrifices, murder, and evil schoolchildren." She's right, in part. There are schoolchildren who seem destined for evil (in real life, we call them bullies; when we grow up, they often become security guards, or if they're sneaky enough, highway patrolmen), but that's fairly true anywhere. HAVE YOU READ THE BOOKS, OR SEEN THE MOVIES? "I will not allow my children to see the movies. I saw the first one of the movies, and then the one with the giant snake." Reading really, truly IS fundamental. Try reading LEFT BEHIND to your kids; you'll see what I mean. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY OTHER PARTIES, BESIDES YOURSELF AND MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY, WHO OBJECT TO THIS MATERIAL. "(rattles off names of handful of people in her community from a signed petition)" I'd bet you good money those are people who she knows through her CHURCH, and that this is a case of a congregation member using subtle tricks and lies to allow her religious views to overcome state-ensured liberty-- at a cost of Georgians losing an increased interest in literacy at a young age.

Posted by Micino Jun 13th 2006

This is one of those things that make you absolutely disgusted with the human race. Why is it that the only way to prevent people from reading Harry Potter is to BAN it?!?! America is a free country. Those who want to be able to read Harry Potter SHOULD, and their right shouldn't be taken away be those few that don't. If you think there is something wrong with a book series, just don't read it! There is no need for this drawn out argument. I know people whose parents wish for them not to read the books, so there kids don't, and these families aren't making a big deal about it. Why can't other people too? Banning the books is just going to increase the disire TO read them, which is PROVEN in Order of the Pheonix with the Quibbler article. Oh wait, she never read the series.

Posted by Sam Jun 13th 2006

Whahhh!?!? I cannot believe that. I mean, she hasnt even read the books.

Posted by MissB Jun 13th 2006

COME ON! HOW can you possibly have a case against some of the greatest literature ever (just my opinion) when you haven't even read it? This is so *cough* RIDDIKULUS!

Posted by angecynique Jun 13th 2006

It's really infuriating that people diss things, or in this case books that they don't really know about. Maybe if she took time to read the books she'd start appreciating them.

Posted by paralegalmomof3 Jun 13th 2006

People like this make me furious!! These are great books, and they get kids to want to read! There was a similar controversy years ago over the "Goosebumps" books. But son wanted to read them, so it was good. If you don't want to read something, don't, but don't infringe on other people's right to read!! If your kid can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality, there is a problem with the kid, not the books!!!

Posted by val Jun 13th 2006

i would be ashamed if that was MY mother.. poor kids.. they're being raised by an idiot.

Posted by katerina Jun 13th 2006

What a load of crap! Honestly, the stupidity of some people amazes me!

Posted by ValGal292 Jun 13th 2006

she's being so stupid!! Seriously, she should read the books BEFORE she tries to ban then...GOD!!!! She's really pissing me off. She probably just wants attention. I'm glad there are alot of people showing support for the books!!!!

Posted by Strider_of_Eire Jun 13th 2006

*Points wand at crazy lady* RIDDIKULUS! *Checks* Dammit she's still here! *Throws wand down in disgust*

Posted by psychosamie Jun 13th 2006

What is her problem, i mean really she wants the books banned but she won't read them because they are too long?? What is wrong, can she only read books that are less then 100 pages? I mean if she is so against stuff like witchcraft and that, then surely the Davinci Code must annoy her, with it contradicting the bible, why dosen't she go off and rant about that???

Posted by Ria_ Jun 13th 2006

...Loser MUCH? She doesn't even know the contents of the book, so what gives her the right to throw them out of schools? Acting on blind judgements. What has the world come to I ask you? The stupid woman probably wanted to show her face off in court and decided to scapegoat Harry Potter. Now I know the definition of an idiot.

Posted by Sean3 Jun 13th 2006

yeah this is just making more people interested in harry potter, just like what the catholic church did when the da vinci code came out.. she looks like a feminazi

Posted by memishelly Jun 13th 2006

ok, seriously.... even if this stupid lady gets the books taken out of schools the kids could read them at home anyways! It's not that hard to go to the library and check one out. Sheesh!

Posted by hayya3 Jun 13th 2006

She is saying all this and she's never read the books?!?

Posted by rupertsfuturewife Jun 13th 2006

If she'd take the time to read the books, she'd realize that what she's saying is totally bogus. (Haha I've never said that word before.) I think people like this are totally ignorant. You need to have backup information before you go putting something down. Some people, I swear. My grandma is like this. She doesn't try to get the Harry Potter books out of schools, but she swears that by me reading them I'm going to go to hell or something. It drives me absolutely insane. Okay done on my rant.

Posted by ConCon Jun 13th 2006

Yeah... about that. It's good that she expresses her opinion and all, but "hard to tell the difference between fantastical and real life?" that's just because jo's such a good writer. Thanks to the people who helped keep our beloved books on the shelves!

Posted by dphizler Jun 13th 2006

Everyone will jump in and say that she should raed the books but I think she might be too busy taking care of 4 kids full time. Maybe she has a job too. You guys are too young to understand how busy a parent can be. I am also too young but at least I try and understand that. As for the subject. Everyone defends HP and they don't even know why. I think that HP books might be more violent than other children's books in the libraries at school. But hey, whatever floats your boats, that's fine. If HP is so important that we need to show kids that they need to read HP and love it at school, so be it. But I think otherwise. HP is so popular that kids will pick up those books even if they aren't at school.

Posted by Strider_of_Eire Jun 13th 2006

living in ireland i never had a problem with books getting banned. Can Anyone tell me if a book gets banned from a school or county library, what happens if someone reads that book in a school or library? Do the book police arrest you? Information gratefully welcomed.

Posted by bellemichelle Jun 13th 2006

"she hasn't read any of the books because they're "too long."" TOO LONG ?????? I'll bet she claims she's read the bible, isn't that longer?

Posted by hayya3 Jun 13th 2006

There was a person trying to get the books out of our school library and they did, several years ago. Two weeks later they were back in the library, and they never even noticed that they had come back. Strange how the world works, eh?

Posted by PadfootBaby Jun 13th 2006

How... how... MORONIC!!! If she's never read the books she has no right to accuse it of this trash... Hard to distinguish between reality and books?! Good grief, woman, only the stupidest people read Harry Potter and think, "Oh, wow, this is real life. I'd better go buy myself a wand and practice spells on people." That is so... ARGH! Read 'em before you judge 'em, please!!!!!!!!!! *End of PadfootBaby's rant. Thank you for listening!* Psht.

Posted by HPfanatic71 Jun 13th 2006

Can you say : Attention Whore!! That's all she's asking for since she's too stupid to come up with anything else intelligent. Only positive thing she's doing, like somebody else posted, is getting HP a lot of publicity so more copies will get sold.. She needs to dig a hole and go live in it! HARRY POTTER ROCKS!!!!

Posted by Markthereader Jun 13th 2006

I especially like this quote: 'Oh, by the way, she hasn't read any of the books because they're "too long."' This is hillarious in two ways: 1.) She's critisizing books she hasn't read. 2.) She's too lazy (or dumb) to read a book that is only a few hundred pages long! This shows why we should keep Harry Potter: it teaches kids to be capable of reading a book that is a few hundred pages long so they don't turn out like this Laura Mallory. But remember, we must respect everyones opinions, even though they seem absolutely retarded. Laura Mallory is thinking of her kids and others when she is doing this. To her, it is the right thing to do. But to go to court without having read the book she is procicuting... now THAT is stupid.

Posted by jbacks Jun 13th 2006

If she seriously thinks it's bad for her children, dont allow them to read it... dont spoil it for an entire community

Posted by ConCon Jun 13th 2006

to dphizler: yeah, some might be too young to understand, but surely there are adults visit this site too, and i doubt they're going to write their age on their comment. Also, our lovely founder is almost an adult. What i'm trying to say is, we know how busy adults are, especially if we have lots of siblings. Thanks for your comment

Posted by gryffindor03 Jun 13th 2006

In the words of Hermione Granger, "What an idiot!"

Posted by LadyArwen06 Jun 13th 2006

And how in the world is taking actions on something she has no support to back up, not to metion being simply lazy by not even bothering to read the books, teaching something good to children???

Posted by lauren9989 Jun 13th 2006

Banning the books won't stop kids from reading them!!! WOW some people are CRAZY!

Posted by kitiara Jun 13th 2006

Over the past couple of centuries in the United States, they have tried banning books and ideas, like Darwin's theory of evolution, 1984, and Brave New World. Guess what, it doesn't work. The best way to guarantee that every kid is going to want to read Harry Potter is by telling them that they can't, just like no one read the Quibbler until Umbridge banned it. No one has the right to tell other people what their kids can and can't read. If she is so concerned about the Satanic themes, then maybe she should just ensure that her children do not read the books (a guaranteed way to ensure that one of her own kids will be hiding a copy under his or her mattress).

Posted by anthy Jun 13th 2006

I protest the presence of "Moby Dick" in school libraries. It promotes cruelty to whales. Of course, I haven't actually read it, because it's too long.

Posted by nymphadoralupin Jun 13th 2006

This woman doesn't give kids enough credit. They aren't (at least not all of them) are that stupid to believe everything they read in Harry Potter books, or books in general for that fact. I think it's a joke when people persecute Harry Potter, especially when they haven't even read the books. Read it and then see how Satanic it is. It's also funny that the books are "too long" for HER but they aren't too long for 10 year olds. I think I see where she stands on her reading level.

Posted by Dani Jun 13th 2006

if this came to my courtroom (if i were a judge) i would throw it out immediately....she hasnt even read what she is arguing...haha...ignorant lady

Posted by kitty_travers Jun 13th 2006

Maybe all libraries should have a restricted section, restricting all those who can't tell fact from fiction!

Posted by Strider_of_Eire Jun 13th 2006

Laura Mallory - Lucius Malfoy Both belive everyone should follow their example, both have blonde hair. Shallow and narrow-minded yes but then again so is she:) (Tell me truthfully you lot weren't thinking the same thing!:))

Posted by KikiPotter Jun 13th 2006

This woman does need a life. Boy, I hope I never meet her ...ooooo. My goddness, I think I know why she is doing this. She knows or thinks that she hasn't taught her chlidern about the differnces in life between real and fiction, so she is trying to force everyone else to pay for her mistakes. She needs to relize everyone has thier own taste in books! I did a paper for school for booking banning and I used her for an example. Eh, like Hermione said, "If she could have done one thing to make sure that every single person in this school will read your interview, it was banning it!â The thought of her underminding her work makes me so warm inside.

Posted by mistyrain Jun 13th 2006

I am truly embarrassed by people like this. I am a southerner, and I am a devout Christian, but because I read (and love) the HP books, according to her, that must mean I am going directly to hell. I am completely disgusted. And she hasn't even read the books...
