Mother appeals decision to keep HP in schools
On April 20th, scores of educators, parents and students showed their support for the books in a public hearing, and both the local school and system media committees concurred. In fact, the support for the books remaining in school libraries was so strong that hearing officer Su Ellen Bray offered ten reasons why they shouldn't be removed and on May 11th, the Gwinnett Board of Education voted that the novels should stay.
Mallory appealed this decision on Friday, and the legal services division of the Georgia Department of Education will now determine the next step in this debate.

WOW! Shocking! Someone condemning Harry Potter books without cracking the spine on one. Gee I don't know it just seems so........ Overdone! These people! I find myself arguing with the religious fanatics and others that are so against these books only to realize that no matter what proof or explanation I give there is simply no winning. My daughter was not allowed to read them at the private school she went to for a year and I asked the teacher why not and she said because of the magic; however, C.S. Lewis and JRR Tolkien were perfectly fine. I am still trying to work that one out.
I cannot believe her! She's judging a book by its cover and jumping on the "Harry Potter is Evil" bandwagon. How dare she say a book is bad when she hasn't even picked it up? Harry Potter could teach HER a thing or two! Hmph.
eh, yeah..she effected the school i go to and my teachers were sooo mad it was really funny because they were just yelling about this lad if she thinks her kids are so stupid that reading a fiction book will completly change them than she needs to talk to her children becuase not all kids in Gwinnett are that dumb
@kellydofc, that's a brilliant idea! LMOA!!! I'm so there! Yeah, I don't get why people are so against HP? I've got news for you HP haters! It's not going away no matter what you do or say! Btw, does anyone else find it funny that Mrs. Mallory's name is kind of similar to Malfoy? Just change a few letters here and there...hm....maybe she is Mrs. Malfoy and is trying to destroy the world by getting rid of Harry, cause she's definitely what she's doing...destroying her childrens' worlds by ridding it of fun.
This women is the biggest idiot. All though, sadley their are alot out their like her. When kids read the books or watch the movies, they dont think of this stuff. Unless the parent teaches it to them. But they don't. They read the books and think about the thrill of it, the action and everything. Women like her only go to the movies and think about and pin point the "evil" as she wants to call it, out of the movie. She's not thinking of anything else. And thats if she seen it. 10 to 1 She probbaly hasn't seen the movies or read the books, just fowllowing on what others told her, and she has the nerve to bible thump it. So wrong. She seems like a very negative person. I worked at a book store when the 5th book came out, and a lady out of nowhere came and yelled at me for reading the book, and tried to give me a hypocritical lecture on religion. Want to know what books she bought? 2 Books on kama sutra and tatrium book. Said it was her anniversary. I still laugh about it. lol.
If this woman wants to lock up her mind to new ideas, that's her business. It's even her right to trap her 4 children's minds in the same way, I think it's wrong, but it's none of my business. So can someone PLEASE explain to me why she thinks it's her decision what the rest of the world (or at least the rest of the parents in her school district) choose to let their children read?
This woman needs to get a job or a hobby. Yet another lemming.
kellydofc... I actually laughed out loud at when i read your comment. Now all my coworkers are staring at me lol. I fully agree. I think it is a wonderful idea you have come up with. I would fly out from california to be a part lol.
Well I don't know about everyone else but when I read Marry Poppins as a kid and they went into their magical world and laughed on the ceiling I know I was confused and thought that I could do it (sarcasm). Her kids must not be able to go to school by themselves because I think she would be there to shield them from the real life bad things that do happen for example bullies. Does she not realize that one of the major themes of the story is that choices make us who we are? We can choose easy or hard we can choose right or wrong. I guess it is these choices that she fears her kids making. It is ok not to like something and to not allow your children to watch, read, or participate in. But to push your morals on everyone and tell them they can and can't do just because you don't like... it what next?
Poor woman. She hasn't figured out that if you want to insult a book and accuse it of being evil and leading kids off to be little witches and wizards, you have to READ IT FIRST to see it for yourself.
The only people who have problems with Harry Potter are the people who haven't read the books. But schools shouldn't let some parents' ignorance affect what the children read. People more educated than this mother are in charge of what goes in the library because they have the ability to read a book and decide for themselves what it means. Unlike this woman.
Too long?!?! There's ONLY 3,341 pages! It only takes a few days to read!
Dose Books Are Saintianish And is Full Of Dat Debil Magic. Harry Podder Is Da Debil. But Of I Aint Red Da Books. Too Many of Dem Pages And Words!
It is really sad to see the ignorance of some people. The worst book in the world as far as evil, murder, violence, sacrifice and moral degradation is ironically one of the most highly read books in the world - the BIBLE! Take almost any book in the Bible and you will be hard pressed to find it devoid of any one of the themes that Ms. Malloy claims is so terrible about the Harry Potter books. Sadly enough, she isn’t alone. There are parents in our school who feel the same way as Ms. Malloy and who haven’t read the books to make their own judgment. It is sad to see religious leaders commenting on the Harry Potter books when they have so much influence over their congregations. This is a democratic society, founded on the belief that we are free to choose what we want to believe in or do as long as it isn't against the law. If Ms. Malloy feels that Harry Potter books shouldn’t be read, so be it, but I for one am sick and tired of people forcing their beliefs on others through lawsuits!
We Should Print Out all Of Our Comments And Fax It To Her
she needs to pick up the books, then she has every right in the world to complain. But at this point she just looks like a judgemental woman trying to stir up trouble.
I feel so bad for her children. Can you imagine being the kid at school whose mom hates Harry Potter? That would suck.
someone should tie this lady down and force her to listen to Jim Dale's audio CD's of all the books...maybe then, she would understand...but i highly doubt it
To be honest, this goes beyond HP. The whole idea of censorship is absurd. One of the world's problems these days is that people have stopped reading, and for a woman to come along and try to stop a series that has brought reading back to life is just plain wrong.
What a completely insane woman. How can you judge something like a book without even reading it beforehand? This woman needs to realize that SHE is the one who can't tell fact from fiction.
As a fellow adult I am completely ashamed of this woman. It takes a lot of nerve to try to ban something that you haven't even bothered to read because it's "too long". Children are smarter then she apparently gives them credit for. Especially when they will read a three thousand page book and she won't.
if i knew her i wudve K-I-L-L-E-D her!!...how can she say that if she never read any book?????????????????????
Although nearly all people are complaining about is the fact that she hasn't even read the books, one fact that could be clearly observed is that the bible is about 2000 pages long, freakin tiny font, and probably about 1500 chapters in it too. Another thing: one of her complaints is about witchcraft and spells. Jesus supposedly cured hundreds of lepers, cured blind men and cripples, and threw a bunch of flames over these twelve guy's heads even after he ascended to heaven. Another common complaint: "Harry Potter disobeys rules and does whatever he wants, despite advice from others." Well HEY! Jesus practically tore apart a country because of his teachings! And did he give a crap about the rules? So how bout you shove that up yours! There's so many more important problems than a freakin children's book. How bout you go to the White House and complain about the fact that the ammunition used in a soldier's gun is made of used up uranium? Or how bout you go give Iran a shout for saying the holocaust never happened? Then again, I'm sure God would never let something that evil EVER happen. I mean, drowning millions of people is justified, cause they were just evil, weren't they? Damn redneck woman...
I Agree With Christi. If I Went To School With Her Son I Would Be Pounding Him Every Day! And I Wouldnt Stop Untid He Made Gis Mom Read On Of The Harry potter Books Or If She cant Read (witch Seemes to Ge The case )He Would have To Read it To Her!
You can't complain about something until you've seen/heard/read it. If you think its evil then, so be it. If you're morally strong enough, read the book and write a real argument! Bad guys do the murder. Funny thing is, my roomie and I sit and discuss biblical imagery in the series. It's not as in your face as C.S. Lewis, but its there.
:steps up on soapbox: If you don't want your kids to do something, then tell them not to do it...explain to them your reasons why...and stop imposing YOUR feelings and opinions on other parents... I don't read Playboy, but if it was in my kids school library - I wouldn't care, because they have learned the morals that I live by and if they choose not to follow my example, well, so be it. I can only spare so much bail money... Anyway, hooray for the decision that they can stay. Unfortunately, the world is full of parents like her. We should all be grateful that no one caved to her and her ignorance. :steps down: Thank you...that's all.
Read the book for god's sake. how can you make an accusation without retaning the knowlage about the thing or person you are accusing? Furthermore, if the books are "too long" for this woman, it makes me question the intellegiance behind the accusation.
I second redwinds statement... Voldemorts "policy" are intolerant... everyone who doesn't live up to his standards - What Dumbledore and Harry - and the "good side" in HP represent in general is love... not mere tolerance, but embracing differences and still fighting intolerance... Some people want to interpret this as a christian notion, but they're forgetting one major element of christian "love: the Bible says that everyone who doesn't accept Christ as his/her savior will be eternally punished in hell... worse than intolerant. this is inhuman and still it's dressed as "love"... that's one of the things moderate Christians tend to forget... As for censorship.... IMO there are limits to what one should be allowed to publish... for example here in Germany it is forbidden to publicly state that the holocaust didn't happen, or to display Nazi-Symbols, or to play down the horrors of the holocaust... and I think it's okay that this is forbidden. But seriously... Harry Potter? A book with such a kind-hearted philosophy that portraits a very benevolent, tolerant and humane moral code...? People like this woman (fundamentalists) would do good to take a leaf out of the book of Harry Potter's ethics...
I Agree Wit The Rusty Bucket Dude. And Y Is It That People Dont seem to Mind STar wars, LOTR,lion witch andthe wardrode, but when they see Harry Potter They All start Talking that Devil Crap.
Oh sweet Lord, She must be unable to read because if she thinks harry potter is bad than she has not read the bible. Knowing she is a goober is the first step and she needs to realize that there are far worse things in the school than HP, namely her opinion. she Mrs. Mallory of Malfoy or wheat ever the retards name is, I have a word of wisdom for you. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH DOE NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD USE IT ALL THE DARN TIME!
Why is it that it is ok for the children of these people(harry potter haters) to watch disney movies? alot of them have magical themes and such. It just makes me laugh to see how ignorant they are, if you havent botherd reading the book then you have no right to critisize it. plain and simple. How come these same people have no problem with Lord of the Rings (which I love). I just dont get it. abbie
Sorry... misedited the first few sentences... should read : "Voldemorts "policy" is absolutely intolerant... everyone who doesn't live up to his standards is deemed unworthy to live... and is going to be killed...
Duh I aint Red Da Books Too Many of Dem Pages An Words
Nice going lady. Next time try reading the books... you might make more money that way. -.-
Stupid B*tch... They are BOOKS. FICTION. MATURE FAIRYTALES. Thank God she's not my mother - I'd probably not be allowed to watch "Cinderella" or "The Little Mermaid", etc. anymore. I suppose we SHOULD give her a break though...she did afterall say that the reason she HASN'T EVEN READ THE BOOKS was because they were too long...so it just goes to show what her IQ/ability to commit to things is... God love the petty people.
She has absolutely no right to critique a book she's never even read.
Does anyone get the felling that this broad hit a nerve?
i agree with Jared_15. lets send her all these comments. shell probably do something drastic, like another cindy sheehan. make a fool of hersellf she will.
Heh, the books are too long. Typical Southern Christian. (spits)
anyone know her address so that we can carry out kellydofc's plan? (everyone bring their books, dvds, gryffindor scarves, and some cookies. oh and we'll need a TV and a few loudspeakers.)
Excuuuse me? PS/SS is "too long"? CoS is "too long"?! Hmmm, what does that say about Ms Mallory -- besides the fact she's obviously allowing others to do her thinking for her .... presumably that's too difficult as well ...
Georgia... out of all the states of course it had to be a lady from Georgia. Almost right next-door to me (well more like 3 hours away but still. I'm probably one of the closest people (besides Laura from MuggleCast) to this lady). Ha. Of course this is the state where they tried to get schools to stop teaching about evolution so what should we expect? Georgia, I think, is last in education of all the states. Now we see why. If these kind of parents that try to ban books would spend their time trying to get their children to read instead of trying to get kids not to read then maybe we would get somewhere.
Looks like someone didn't make it all the way through the "Intelligent Design" line.... You can't fight stupidity.... but you can lock them up in an asylum till they shut up!
I love how everyone is comparing how she won't read the HP books because they're too long to the fact that she must not have read the Bible either. I go to a Catholic school and I've read...let's see...about 10+ chapters of the Bible (plus outlining - and we're talking Genesis, the Gospels, etc). I would HP over the Bible ANY day... Damn this woman is stupid... I wish someone would do this at my school so I could yell at them...and then laugh...hahahaha
I don't know how she even plans on getting through the appeal if she hasn't read the books. How does she plan on backing herself up without hard evidence from the books?
I dont think she relizes how moronic she sounds. I agree we should send her all of these comments. Or camp out across the street from her house all dressed up in wizard robs and carrying wands and read the books through a microphone so she can hear it.
Everyone is entitled to their opinions of books. She is allowed to not like Harry Potter. BUT what I don't like is how this woman is trying to force her opinion on others. If she seriously has a problem with the books, she should limit her own children to not reading them... not force her tyrant rules on the entire community. If other parents also have a problem with the books, they too can limit their kids from reading the books... but they shouldn't be allowed to outlaw something that they disagree with. Another person may LOVE HP books... but they aren't allowed to force those who hate it to read it. If you don't like the book, good lord, DONT READ IT! But for the sake of others, don't make them not read something they enjoy. I guess we shouldn't persecute the lady for having an opinion on whether liking something or not... it's just the fact that she's trying to push others to agree with her. Who knows, maybe I'm just being a little close minded because I love the books... but I don't think it's fair for her to tell others what not to read... especially when this is a free country and we're allowed to do what we please as long as its not hurting someone or something. And God forbid the HP books to actually DO something to someone. Anyone agree that this lady is allowed to have an opinion... yet shouldn't tell others what to do... say I! "I!"
AnyaMarcos, you cant sterotype southern christians like that. that makes you as bad as that crazy woman. she may be a fanatic, but she is ony 9ne person. you can judge a whole group of people by one person.
This poor deluded woman would have perished on the spot if she'd come to So. California, where I'm an elementary school librarian. Last July (in honor of our favorite author's birthday and the release of book 6, I converted our library into a life-size replica of Hogwarts -- complete with a flying broom sticks, Quidditch rings, and a fireplace to floo to Diagon Alley. Not ONE parent, in a school of 1000 children complained. It's literature -- and brilliant literature at that!
I would love to be there to see her "Evidence" that would mean she would have to, dare I say it, READ THE BLOODY BOOKS!
