Mother appeals decision to keep HP in schools
On April 20th, scores of educators, parents and students showed their support for the books in a public hearing, and both the local school and system media committees concurred. In fact, the support for the books remaining in school libraries was so strong that hearing officer Su Ellen Bray offered ten reasons why they shouldn't be removed and on May 11th, the Gwinnett Board of Education voted that the novels should stay.
Mallory appealed this decision on Friday, and the legal services division of the Georgia Department of Education will now determine the next step in this debate.

I Agree Wit JiMMie Johnson Lets Do It Dose N E 1 Know Her Fax # ? Wait She Probably Wont Know How to read What We Are Typing.
Jimmie, sorry to break your little Happy Bubble, but this woman is the rule, not the exception. Southern Christians are the worst when it comes to stupidity like this.
lmao. people. it would be worth her time if she actually read them. but lmao i love people like this, they're so entertaining. they're also the type of people who are like "GOD GOD GOD loves everyone" but then they hate everyone except people just like themselves. creepy amusing people lmao. so entertaining.
Yea... fundamentalist christian:... evolution is wrong and evil, Harry Potter is evil, Science that contradicts the bible is evil and wrong... What next... the earth is the center of the universe, it's flat and came into exitence about 5000 years ago...? Actually I think it would be fun if a fundamentalist Christian were to file a lawsuit to ban Harry Potter because it endorses immoral behaviour... then I would personally travel there to testify why this is true of the bible but not of Harry Potter... then they would either have to shut up or ban the bible (LOL)
Hey miss Laura Mallory, God Loves you, but we think you are an retard. yours most respectfully Everyone :o)
You know, the fact of the matter is, catholics have proven to be a lot more evil in the past than Lord Voldemort. Look at the Crusades. I mean sure, the Muslims didn't treat Catholicism fairly, but out of nowhere, Europe decides to send tens of thousands of people down there and slaughter all dem Muslim heretics. But hey, it was in the name of God, so who can say that their actions weren't justified? I think Mrs. Mallory is probably just trying to prove that she's true to her faith, so she's just jumping on the bandwagon of the latest complaint the Catholic church has set up. It's complete bullpoopy. If anybody's going to hell, it's her, cause I do believe bigotry is a sin.
She's probably one of those people who doesn't read the books, only reads articles like the one criticizing Jo Rowling for speaking out for obese people. Or perhaps she listens to radio stations which diss HP because Pope Benedict also disses it? In my city, I was listening to the radio the day before HP6 came out, and all they did was diss, diss, diss! Then, when asked by a caller if they read the books... they said, "no, though I've read many articles on which tell the truths JKR is implying in her series: witchcraft, demons, and death in a good light. " WOW! That's really all I have to say.
Never mess with Harry Potter fans...that folks is the lesson of the day. I agree with the others. Lets send these comments to her.
jbacks- Parents can tell their kids not to read something but if the school library has it than they could easily read it anyway. So I can see why parents would want some things banned from school. Of course I don't agree with her wanting to ban harry potter but let's say (I hate to make this comparison but oh well) let's say they had porn in a school library. I would try to get that banned. It's not because I'm trying to force my beliefs on a community it's because I'm trying to stop something from being so accessible to my children. But JKR says her books are "moral" and I totally agree! I wish this woman had actually read the books.
IAgree Wit Fallen Star. I Live in Gwinnet So It Wont Be A Far Drive....................If Only I Knew Where She Lived And How To Get A Hold Of Some Dementors.
This woman's lack of intelligence is proven easily by the fact that she hasn't even read the books beacause they're "too long". I'm sure even her own children read books larger than the Harry Potter ones but nooooo, the poor little ugly woman has trouble reading an itsy bitsy book. If she does not actually READ the books then her 'complaints' have no value whatsoever and OK, "demonic activity", hehe that sounds familiar given the fact that we're all "going to hell for reading Harry Potter books" as for murders this is all part of the real world. Jo describes really well in her books her belief that murder is wrong. Hoever, such people that comit murder should be punished or killed to stop them from causing such harm to innocent people. I totally agree with katiewayt, one of the first reviewers, in that this woman should read picture books although, on second thought pop-up books should fill this woman's needs entirely. She's after all, an idiot.
There are so many people down here that are just like her. She probably has a whole following of admirers in her town. Ignorance makes me so mad. I know so many people here who hate harry and they have never read it because "it's to long and it's to complicated." I wish I lived somewhere where people wern't so....
I've read Harry Potter since I could first read, I'm a Christian, and I don't jump out of windows with broomsticks. I alright with people who won't let their children read it, but baning it it just wrong. What next, band Lord of the Rings???
activism is about affecting a change to improve or remove social injustices...not about getting revenge on someone who disagrees with us. that's just childishness. the issue is that she's imposing her beliefs on others by trying to force the books out of the school. i don't want to hear comments about southern christians as i myself am one. that offends me deeply to define us all by her actions. all southerners are not ignorant or stupid... this isn't about where she lives or what religious beliefs she elects to live by. this is about controlling others thru her actions and she has no right to do that. as i said in my previous comments, we should just be grateful that enough people on the decision-making board agreed with our perspective and told her to bugger off. your children learn their morality at HOME first and foremost. perhaps if she felt confident enough in her own example, then she wouldn't be so overzealous. it scares me more than anything that she thinks that she is doing the right thing. i thought we had come a lot further than this, and thank god - most of us have. you should pity her for her ignorance and forget about it.
Jared, according to people like her we are all going to hell so we might as well do some 'blood sacrafices' (her words) to satan and get some dementors.
ok, this is getting old, we've heard enough about how we worship the devil and practice demonic whatever. what people like this dont understand, and wont ever understand, is that we LIKE harry potter, and no matter what people like her say, we always will. so HA! also, we dont make fun of the non HP fans, so why cant they leave us aloneeee????? someone get these people a life please...
She sounds like quite an oppressive woman. I feel sorry for her kids, they are probably brainwashed by her. She should probably read the books first before she judges them, but she probably doesn't have enough imagination for it. She should just keep her stupid thoughts to herself and not try to ruin it for everyone else.
True Sophie, though just b/c you don't want your kids reading something shouldn't stop 500 other kids from getting access to them. If she's that concerned, why doesn't she just go to the school librarian and refuse to let her/him dole out any books relevant to HP or witchcraft etc. If she's that close minded, why not just rule out ALL fictional books to her kids. Regardless, even if she DOES win this appeal... if her kids WANT to read the books, then she won't stop them. They can easily get it from friends, or the book store... anywhere! If her kids are determined then she lost.
Yeah I totally agree, she should read all our comments the moron, but wait a minute, our comments are "too long" she'll go to court when she gets them and say they containt "demonic stuff". Gosh if I ever got hold of this woman I'd show her what violenece really means. This people really make me mad given the fact that I'm usually rather peaceful.
sum people.... she asn't even read it! i swear im neva goin 2 complain about mi parents again. HP rox!!!
Falling Star :While In Hell We'll Still Be Reading The books And making A Mockery Of Those who Dont:)
Yeah... true true. I have mixed feelings about banning books. (Not about Harry Potter though.) I can see where people are coming from. But you're right; she could just talk to the librarian about her kids and that way she wouldn't be forcing her beliefs on ALL the kids. Hmm...
This is ridiculous, I am ashamed that someone from my home state is so short-sighted. 'Tis just and it is very much lamented that such an idiot would say such things. :C
If it comes down to it we could always start a petition. We'd have no problem gaining thousands and thousands of signatures.
Harrypgirl - Christians wonât try to ban âLord of the Ringsâ because JR Tolkien is a Christian writer and they believe that âLord of the Ringsâ is an analogy to Christianity - just like the Narnian Chronicles. I know Christians who wonât read Harry Potter, but who absolutely love the âLord of the Ringsâ. Sad but true. I must have missed something in the article where Ms. Malloy was a Catholic. I donât think her religion was even mentioned.
this ladt reminds me of my neighbor, who took her kids doors away cuz she found out they got a C on soemthing in school, parents like that and this other lady need to realize they cant change everyones opinions.
Idiocy. Pure idiocy. This woman disgusts me. She must not have two brain cells to rub together. "Duh, these books are bad even though I've never read them duh,". I am really sorry but honestly, she thinks Harry Potter books are "too long". Not only is it stupid, but it's also lazy.
Jared, sounds like heaven! no wait... hee hee just contridicted myself a bit.
I feel SOOOOOO badly for everyone who isn't aloud to read Harry Potter!!! I can't beleive I have to agree with foreverstrange!!! how the hell do you do that?
Yeah, I like that idea that we could all come and camp in her front yard (or across the street) and play the books on tape really loudly and all dress up in robes and wave wands yelling spells and through Potter books at any one who leaves the house:)
ok i LOVE how she says the book contains witchcraft, uh really? i had no idea.
This sounds like a case that happened once to me in 2nd. grade. I was reading HP3, and a girl came up to me and said that her mom isn't letting her read the 1st one b/c it had the stone, immortality, death, and all that "bad" stuff in it. I was a little shocked, and just kept reading it. Finally, the girl went to the teacher and said that I was reading a devil book... wow, big confrontation. They took my book to make the girl and her mom happy. In the end I was given my book back b/c they realized it wasn't some factual book written by a man in his 60's trying to convince kids to worship the devil: they realized it was a FICTION book, filled with magic and fun and teaching good morals... like how to be a loyal friend, or to do what is right but not always easy... instead of looking at the BAD of HP, they saw the good morals it was posessing: the fact that good always wins.
Well I think we can all agree and leave it to rest that this bitch has got to go. so how are we going to do it. please post your choices
Yeah Look at It This Way. If We Go To Hell(witch i Dout)Then Rupert Dan emma j.K.Rowling And Every one else will be There too. But You know Why She Is Doing This........... The Same Reason People Send Hte Mail To Emerson...........To Get Poblicity.
i completely agree. she is just looking for attention and money, and unfortunatly there is too meny crazy people on the planet to back her up. that just means we have to fight harder against them
hah i knew there would be alot of bashing on this news article. She's got a right to her opinion...so bashing her and calling her names is almost as bad if not worse than her thinking our Harry is evil. I don't agree with her - but at least she's standing up for what she beleives in eh?
Got To go POWER TO THE FANATICS!
Wouldn't you all hate it if this was your mom? Having her on every crazy HP website, all over the news with 50 billion people ready to kill her? "Hey, this is my mom, Laura Mallory." ... "Oh, nice to meet you Mrs. Mal.... wtf?! ATTACK!!!!!" ..... Personally if it were my mom, I would be drop dead embarassed.
I gaurantee you that this woman is NOT Catholic. They're far too liberal to pull this sort of crap. She's Southern Baptist, for sure. You know Fred Phelps and his church, thye ones who picket at gay people's funerals? hey're Southern Baptist. A Southern Baptist will smile at your face, and then giggle with her friends about why you're going to hell. Trust me, I live surrounded by them. And all those of you wishing you knew where this stupid cow lives...HELLO? You know what town she lives in and you know her name. Look it up on Anywho. I already did, and yes, she's there. Along with her number.
my gosh! i hate ppl like that. it annoys the heck out of me when people say harry potter is bad and a ton of other witchcraft filled books don't get nearly as much criticism.
ew, i'm embarassed for her. children in elementary schools are reading books that she won't read because they're "too long."
LAWRENCEVILLE â Graveyards, dungeons and secret chambers were some of the sites of Harry Potterâs toughest battles. But in the latest chapter, the forces in his favor and his opposition met in an unlikely place: a small hearing room, stuffed full of parents, administrators, students and teachers. The public hearing held Thursday helped determine whether J.K. Rowlingâs best-selling book series would stay on the shelves of Gwinnett public schools or be permanently removed. The debate was started by Laura Mallory, a Loganville mother of four, who filed a complaint condemning the âHarry Potterâ books and requesting they be taken out of all school libraries. âI want to protect children from evil, not fill their minds with it,â Mallory said. âThe âHarry Potterâ books teach children and adults that witchcraft is OK for children.â The âHarry Potterâ series follows the young wizard from the age of 11, when he learns of his lineage, as heâs educated at Hogwartâs School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. At Thursdayâs hearing, Mallory spoke against the books along with four other parents and students. One of them was Stacy Thomas, a mother of five, who said reading the âHarry Potterâ series made her daughter turn to witchcraft, ultimately causing their Christian family to lose friends, finances and their reputation. Her daughter, Jordan Fusch, 15, testified that she began experimenting with tarot cards, curses and seances after reading the books. âAs a former witch, I can tell you that witchcraft is not fantasy. ... I felt I could not escape the clutches of witchcraft,â Fusch said. âIt has taken several years of counseling to get to where I was before witchcraft and reading âHarry Potterâ books.â School system employees and several parents countered that the book series should stay on library shelves because they made many children, some of whom never liked reading, to tackle the lengthy volumes. A mother of three, Laura Bowen, whose entire family had read and enj...
Meleah, the woman is entitled to her opinion, yes. But she is trying to get the books banned. That goes beyond someone's opinion. People like you are why Hitler stayed in power so long.
totally, if an 8 year old can read them, then so can she!!!!!!! i wonder what her children think ~morgan~
My school actually promotes reading books that been banned at some point. All of the doors to the library have a list of books that have been banned and all the bookmarks given away have the names of banned or previously banned books.
If the obviously stupid woman wants to have any substance behind what she's saying she needs to at least READ what she's labeling evil before making such THIN accusations. Plainly, the whole thing's just idiotic... if kids can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality, there must be something wrong~~~~
that's pathetic... i mean, she's trying to look out for her children, but how can she ban a book that she hasn't even read??? couldn't she look at a positive side of harry potter... CHILDREN ARE READING! instead of watching TV or playing on the computer all day, children are picking up books and reading them! evil themes, witchcraft, demonic activity, murder, evil blood sacrifice, spells... does this woman actually think by just reading these books, we'll be able to cast spells or perform witchcraft? oh yeah, and this coincides with the other article about kids becoming violent because of harry potter: after we read the books, we all wanted to go out and murder a load of people because "voldemort was setting us an example." i'm assuming by "evil blood sacrifice" she means pettigrew, but if not, i don't know where she's getting these things. considering lilly was good, and she sacrificed herself for harry... ahhhh i don't know. this lady needs to read the books. too long? HA you should ask her what the last book she read was. yeah, this comment is long enough. but you can't judge a book by its cover, and she's renouncing them all, and she's never even read them! maybe she's just doing it for publicity or something...
i do not care for those not Harry Potter fans who do not read the books previously before making their cases. as a Christian adult/teen, i have endured much of what this lady has said Harry Potter emphasizes. i was told in high school that the books were 'evil' and 'satanic'. this piece of news is in a way, not new to me. i have fought on this topic for over a year now, i even left a roommate in college who thought i worshipped satan for reading Harry Potter. that is why i have written an argumentative essay for my college research writing class. it is entitled, 'being selective: is the goblet of fire spitting out good or evil?' my paper is to debunk the notion of occultist indoctrination of children. when i receive the 19 page thesis back, i hope that mugglenet will let me post it. i am not bashing this woman in any way, but her lack of reading just because the books are too long (or loquacious) is showing her lack of intelligence and even her defense of her beliefs. i hope good defeats evil and that the books will be there to stay.
A mother of three, Laura Bowen, whose entire family had read and enjoyed the books, said most students are able to distinguish that the content of the books is not factual. âA child who is unable to recognize the difference between fantasy and reality is either too young or too immature to read them, or has issues bigger than removing the âHarry Potterâ books is going to solve,â Bowen said. Faye Curlee, the school systemâs director of media and information services, said the system had received more than 250 letters from parents and children praising the books and asking that they not be removed. She said they promoted positive ideas such as overcoming adversity, courage and the struggle between good and evil. Reading specialist Lisa Eickholdt testified she had tried reading the series with a class of students who were two levels below in reading comprehension. She said they were bored by reading, or hated it, before they started reading out loud the first book, âHarry Potter and the Sorcererâs Stone.â âI noticed the change when they begged me to keep reading at the end of class because we had time for âa few more pages,ââ Eickholdt said. âI noticed the change when they wanted to stay in from recess to read more.â All of the testimony at the public hearing was taped and transcribed. Hearing Officer Sue Ellen Bray will make recommendations to the Gwinnett Board of Education about her observations. All board members also received copies of all the books, the complaint forms and supplemental information supplied by both sides. The board will then have 10 days to vote on whether the books will stay or be removed, likely at the next monthly meeting May 11. Bray strictly enforced 15-minute time limits for both sides to present their cases. Then six parents and students, who had signed up in advance, had a chance to speak for or against the books. Gaye Bruce, a parent volunteer at Alton C. Crews Middle School, said she wanted to see the books removed even i...
ANonnyMouse is right i think children can tell the differance between good and evil. we can handle it ~morgan~
