Mother appeals decision to keep HP in schools
On April 20th, scores of educators, parents and students showed their support for the books in a public hearing, and both the local school and system media committees concurred. In fact, the support for the books remaining in school libraries was so strong that hearing officer Su Ellen Bray offered ten reasons why they shouldn't be removed and on May 11th, the Gwinnett Board of Education voted that the novels should stay.
Mallory appealed this decision on Friday, and the legal services division of the Georgia Department of Education will now determine the next step in this debate.

We should all send her a copy of the books
Never mind, that's not her... I got it wrong.
Because you posted that she's going to get a ton of hate mail from everyone on here. I say she's entitled to her opinion but don't force it on us. We're entitled to one too. As the majority of people don't care if they're on the shelves LET THEM BE THERE! The biggest thing that annoys me is she hasn't read the books. URGH!!! People like that bug me.
Known problems with Harry Potter: 1) Lack of sleep because you spend all of the release night reading 2) Showing children and adults that it is OK to have an imagination 3) Teaching kids that you don't always have to follow your friends (Neville Longbottom in book 1) 4) Good overcomes evil 5) Love is shown as the greatest power you can have People can think what they want to think, everyone is allowed their own opinions. But, the best opinions are based on fact not on what others have told you. Harry Potter is a story the same as The Da Vinci Code is a story, it isn't a plot to turn people away from God. She should accept this and let people read what they like and then make their own mind up. Reading different stories helps people to develop imagination (look at Fanfiction). She is denying kids by trying to ban the books. Her right not to read them, our right and her kids right to read them.
I'd think it be hard to be so passionate about condemning a book you've never read. Also, I've seen young children read them.. so an adult who claims that she hasn't read them because they're "too long" is obviously an idiot to begin with. (And at the very least, I don't think anyone can argue that the first three books are very long at all.) Lastly, if she's honestly concerned about her children being able to "distinguish between the fantastical events in the books and real life," then i think there's a more pressing problem than the books in question. (Perhaps stupidity is hereditary.)
Who is she kidding? How are her arguments going to be plausible if she hasn't even read the books? They're "too long"? No one will back her up if can't even be bothered to read the books that she's complaining about. Doesn't matter, though. Atleast HP's getting loadsa free publicity.
I have one thing to say to her. Lady, before you start ranting against them, READ THE BOOKS! Wouldn't it be hilarious if she actually READ them and discovered she LIKED them?
I personally think its pretty stupid for this mom to be saying all this. I mean its not really fair to kids when she does that. She should be forced to read each book so then she can tell how sorry she was!
This person (I will not call her a lady) is not entitled to impress her demands on others just because she has to deal with her husband cheating on her and her bastard children eating cereal with water instead of milk. I believe it is she who is evil and must be cast into the bottomless pit. Do you hear me Laura you are an evil witch who must be wiped from the earth, burned at the stake, or boiled in oil. oh and have a nice day. Just thought I would write something about her, kinda like how she wrote her information about J. K. Rowlings great literary master pieces. I know nothing about her, never met her. So how dumb do I look writing all this crap about something I know nothing about. The More You Know.
She could as well have said: Harry Potter is doubleplus ungood and JKR is a thoughtcriminal...Not bellyfeeling that Harry Potter is doubleplus ungood is thoughtcrime. (if anyone gets the literary reference... you get a smile from me)
i am in highschool, yet was forbidden to ever go near a Harry Potter book until this past fall. my parent had heard bad things about the books, things like they used real spells. my youth pastor read the books and told my parents they were harmless. i then read the books and really liked them and my dad read them and he liked them too. i don't agree with her but i understand where this lady is coming from. i don't think she should make such a fuss, let her so what she wants with her own kids but let other parents make decisions for their children. she shouldn't judge so harshly especially if she hasn't read the books, and they are not too long.
wow the more this woman talks the more embarrassed I become for her. If she finds the Harry Potter series to be "too long" then maybe she should save her breathe and complain about picture books instead.
i usually don't bash on comments...but i will do so now in the most immature way: im sry but Laura Mallory you are the biggest air-headed idiot to walk on the planet..and you are wasting a good amount of earth-time on this case & your meaningless accusations...i mean never read the books? come on....
Get. Over. It. God some people are so quick to judge things they haven't got a clue about. I would have a LITTLE more sympathy if she had actually read the book she's supposed to be so against! Some people are clueless!

man, people really need to lighten up about what kids read, its no worse than anything that they are exposed to every day at home and at school. These books have had such a wonderful reception by so many people, I still can't understand why someone would want them banned. Children need to be introduced to some degree of evil at that age, or else they will just walk out into the world absolutely clueless.
I am a Christian who lives in the South; I have 3 children (all of whom are Potter fans, NONE of whom are massmurders, spellcasting bulies, or idiots) and they are the ones who introduced me to my favorite young wizard--thanks, again, guys! Mrs. Mallory deserves our pity, for bigotry is a pitiful and hateful thing... she deserves our warning about the state of a democracy when the Thought Police get a foothold... she is a pitiful and not very intelligent-seeming person with obviously limited respect for democracy and the perceived intellectual strength of others (especially her poor children!). She does not deserve hate mail, abuse (however much fun it might be to talk about "getting even"), or outright scorn. She is already living in her very own version of purgatory-- and nothing we can do will make it any worse. In order for a free society to remain free, we each have to respect the others' rights to think and believe what they choose to espouse, even when it is ill-considered or plainly unintelligable trash. True enough, the Bible is much longer, more complicated, and contains a LOT of graphically delineated violence, bigotry, and just plain evil; it also gives a plain message that love, mercy, and grace are available for those who CHOOSE them, justice awaits those who CHOOSE to disdain them. JKR has done a masterful job of making that same basic point in her marvelous writings, and I am very glad to live in the same world with her. I thank God for gifted, intelligent artists, and pray for patience when it comes to dealing with the untutored, illogical, bigotted, and illiterate. Yes, Harry Potter ROCKS!
This sounds like what my math teacher tried to do at my old school only it got so bad with what he was saying and calling. I had to switch schools. The weird thing is, is that I can see there point but to me it don't make sense. Because the bible is a fight between good and evil and so is th HP books. I think they should at least read a few chapters of one of the book and then choose there opinon.
she just an attention seeking witch who needs to shut up and go away ~morgan~
how about we put a parental warning on the books. NOTE, THIS BOOK MAY BE HARMFUL IF TAKEN SERIOUSLY, IT IS JUST A STORY LAURA MALLORY , ANY PARENT WHO DOES NOT READ THIS BOOK WILL BECOME STUPIDER FOR BASHING IT. and so on and so forth.
how could anybody say the hp books r evil without even reading them? i mean, seriously, lyk this lady needs some help.
I live right near there and it makes me mad. Well nobody would ever listen to them.
hahahahahahaha.... loser.
I Live In Gwinnet All I have to Do Is Walk around looking For A Trailer House To Set Fire. Its Bound To Be Hers
jbacks, I told you where to find her address, not to post it here, you dumb twit. You are so banned.
Ok folks I just figured out what she is thinking. "OMG how can they put these books in schools they lead to forced abortion, leperacy, underage pregnancy, Herpes, Crabs, gonoria, the clap, and syphilis." But then she told me she had all that at 15 so I can't really trust it
I really hate people who refuse to read the books and then call them evil. the books are about OVERCOMING evil... the only good character I can think of making a so-called "blood sacrifice" is lily potter, and she was dying to save her son. besides, why is this woman trying so hard to get them kicked out of the whole district? if you're against them, then don't let YOUR kids read the books. but don't keep them away from all the kids...
If only Christians would put as much effort into helping the hungry as they do hating on gays and Harry Potter. But then they do always pick the easy fight....
what the heck is the matter with that lady?!? she's never even read the books and accusing at the same time!
Ugghhh! GRRR! She better get ready for the mob of angry HP fans who'll come grab her in her sleep! I REALLY REALLY "strongly dislike" people like that!
Hmm... well, that's all quite strange; I mean, this lady is very surprising. I'm not saying the fact that she thinks the books teach evil or whatever is odd, it's even quite normal for this type of people to accuse something without not getting into the depths of the problem (i.e. at least reading the books in this case) and there are enough not-very-sane people around us so it's all quite everyday. But she should realize who she's accusing and what she's fighting with, shouldn't she?? It's just madness to try to stand against this Empire (as it is an empire with Jo as the queen ;)) even if she does believe in what she's trying to defend or whatever she's doing - I'm still not quite sure. A quarter of the world (well, maybe exaggerating) has been trying to stand against the HP series (well, let's face it, speaking nonsense most of the time), what does she think she's doing?
So Are we al in agreement that we need to boil her in oil? whose with me?
Well, padfootsgirl... with the difference that in HP the bad people are the intolerant ones and the good people are the ones that don't simply want to have those who disagree punished and killed, whereas in the Bible the good ones also kill, torture and want the ultimate punishment for all those who don't believe what they belive... eternal punishment in hell... and the "father figure" in HP - Dumbledore has - unlike the chrisitan god - never eradicated whole peoples... or sent bears to kill children... and Dumbledore - unlike Moses when he saw the golden calf- has never called upon his followers to kill their next man.... Dumbledore -unlike Paul- didn't say that all those who teach something other than what he teaches shall be condemned in all eternity... In the bible... everyone who doesn't accept Jesus as the son of god and their savior are necessarily bad, immoral people who deserve to burn in hell... it says so in the bible... So this woman is true to what the bible says... more than moderate christians anyway... IMO - the HP books depict a much more humane ethics than the bible... Please note that my comments are not directed against faith - only against most parts of the bible... If you embrace love and kindness and believe in god - that's fine by me... I congratulate you...
I hate it when people try to ban something or talk about something they have never even done or read in this case. I don't have a problem if people don't like or don't read Harry Potter (but how you can't not like Harry Potter is beyond me) but its when they talk bad about it and they haven't even read it. And to the lady who is trying to ban the books: Not reading a book because it is too long is a sorry excuse especially if you are trying to ban the books. Harry Potter is not "evil" as people are trying to say it is. The majority of the people who talk bad about Harry Potter and try to say it teaches you witchcraft haven't even read the book. If they would read the book they will find out how wrong they are. In fact if you think about the book on a whole the magic aspect of the book is a subplot and the message of good vs. evil and choosing what is right over what is wrong and the easy way out is the main aspect. And I ask any of you who think HP teaches you witchcraft find me one part in the book where it gives you step by step instuctions on how to cast a spell or brew a potion. It doesn't. It just says the spell or the potion not every single ingredient or how to carry out a spell. The most it shows about how to carry out a spell is "swish and flick". All of you who hate HP but talk trash about it: I challenge you to read the books at least one and tell me how they teach you witchcraft or any other "evil". They are a good influence on people. They have made kids like to read. Just because you are a Christian (which I am) does not mean you cannot read every book that has magic in it. What about Cinderella and other Disney movies they have magic in the but no one tries to ban anybody from watching Cinderella. I read HP but it doesn't make me want to go out and do witchcraft. Like I said I have no problem with people who don't like Harry Potter. It is the people who talk bad about it and never read the books. At least read the books before you talk bad about them.
where did the 'and no she hasn't read the books' phrase go?! that was what made me so mad.
She has never even read them. Lmao. They're too long?! Please! Okay so they are long, but Philospher's Stone isn't. Neither is Chamber of Secrets for that matter! Poor deluded person. It makes me wonder how one can form an opinion of something one knows nothing about. It also makes me wonder about the sanity of the human race. Bless, maybe she just wanted her 15 minutes of fame? Or maybe she's just stupid. I lean towards the latter, personally.
she has no right to try and ban them when she hasnt even read them herself...i mean i can understand that parents have concerns for their children and everything, but without even READING the books...if she read them she would see we dont go "Voldemort, ur our hero!" or we'll kill ourselves running through the thing between platforms 9 and 10. alos if she read the books she would kno that hp doesnt portray that evil always wins and somewhere there is a magical world with wizards and witches. woahhh ron_luver91 u wrote a lot ;)
This is such a common case of ignorance. It's just so infuriating that people are still judging things that they know nothing about. If this woman had taken the time to read any of the books I might respect her right to the opinion that she holds, but she hasn't even done that! So why should any of us? Infact, why don't we all just go and condemn things that we know nothing about right now! While they're dragging this through the courts they should also ban those ridiculous infant programs on morning television.I think you'd all know the ones I'm talking about ... But an example whould be where the characters are all bright multi-coloured, in-human, fat, fuzzy creatures with arials sticking out of their heads and tv monitors on their bellies and they repeatedly say things like 'EH,OH!' instead of 'HELLO!' These programs teach the youngest generation it's first words and make a huge impression upon toddlers later life ... So they turn into illiterate thugs that steal tv's, stick coat-hangers in their heads to pick up SKY TV and keep trash talking over and over again ... Is this really what we want our kids to grow up to become? NO! BUT I STILL DON'T HEAR ABOUT ANYONE EVEN THINKING OF BANNING IT! I'm sure everyone would just think I'm being stupid about this ... AND THEY WOULD BE RIGHT!
I think we can all agree on the rule: If you haven't read it... keep your mouth shut... And I think we can agree on: You don't like something but cannot prove that it is harmful? Then don't ask for your opinion to be made into the law
I hope if this stupid cow ever gets arrested, she chooses to be her own defense lawyer. She should be awesome at it, without ever having cracked a law book.
It was bound to happen at some point. And this wont be the first time either. People are scared of HP's popularity, and jump to conclusions. Also, it's a mother's job to teach the child the difference between fiction and reality. If her kids cant tell the difference, it's her fault, not the books. The same problem would occur with any fictional book. What book is not a story between good and evil? Sure there are a few exceptions, but if you only read those, you'd never be able to get a good education. Harry Potter is just another spin on the classic story of good and evil. And yet, she doesnt try to ban Chronicles of Narnia, which I might add, has similar features. No. It's always Harry Potter. It's sad that a good chunk of the human race is stupid.
in the words of ben ... GIVE ME A BUTTERBEER ! it's our choice, not yours.
First of all she needs to read the books to make any kind of claim. And if she did read them she'd realize that spells and witchcraft have a role in the book but the main focus is on good triumphing over evil. Second, if she doesn't want her children to read the books...then don't let them, but she has no right to tell other parents what their children can read. Thrid, too long? Obviously ever HP fan would like the book to be 1,000+ pages, but we know that won't happen. As a Christian myself I enjoy these books for what they are, a wonderful and well thought out work of fiction nothing more nothing less. JKR is an amazing author and her work should be celebrated and enjoyed. Kids know more than we think they do...they know that it's fiction. Personally I think that it's the adults who can't tell the difference. But that's just my opinion.
Things like this kill me. Apart from the fact that the woman is clearly just a religious zealot who cannot open her mind to fantasy as a meaningful way of teaching children lessons about good and evil, she didn't read the book because it was "too long." Um, red flag: the woman has no brain. If you're going to criticize something, at least be well-informed about it. Perhaps if she read the books she would know that they teach children valuable lessons, not to mention provide an excellent opportunity for use of imagination.
Posted by xxpumpkinpastiesxx 1 minute ago in the words of ben ... GIVE ME A BUTTERBEER ! it's our choice, not yours. Lol, that made me laugh. I think people are over reacting to this it acctually is quite common for parents not to let there children read Harry Potter. My own parents did not allow me to read until I was ten.
Christians live in perpetual fear of anything that doesn't fit in their beliefs. It's got to suck. Actually I KNOW it sucks. I used to be a Christian. Luckily I realized it was a cult before I got completely sucked in.
besides, HP fans so pwn people like her. i'm pretty sure there are more of us than there are of them.
"Christians live in perpetual fear of anything that doesn't fit in their beliefs. It's got to suck. Actually I KNOW it sucks. I used to be a Christian. Luckily I realized it was a cult before I got completely sucked in." Um, hate to break it to you but Christians arn't a cult. I am a Catholic and I don't live in "perpetual fearr of anything that doesn't fit into [my] their beliefs" I am not offended by "Da Vinci Code" or anything. How does Christanity and being a cult fit in what do we do that makes us a cult?
I just wanted to add one other thing - I've noticed a lot of people mentioning how she's Cathlic and that Catholics shouldn't be talking about banning these books because we've (as a church) done horrible things before (crusades, etc.)...but I highly doubt she's a Catholic if she's a southerner (I live in Iowa and whenever we go down South for a vacation it's impossible to find a Catholic Church..) so you really shouldn't be judging the Catholic faith like some of you have...and things like the Crusades, well, they were started by a self-righteous, power hungry Pope. (Also - the medieval era wasn't exactly a highlight in church history...very corrupt).. Okay - sorry for all that..:D (I love history, so don't mind me..) Anyways - I agree that she definately needs to read the books and get a clue before she goes off on us. And wouldn't it be fun to not just go to her house dressed up...but to then pretend that we actually WERE wizards and witches and then she'll think we're ALL crazy...mwahahaha
I still can't believe she admitted that the books were "too long". I mean, c'mon woman. With her IQ it's amazing she got this far in the trial to begin with.
