More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

dude, lilo and stitch suck. I'm gonna have to find my Harry Potter DVDs. This is pathetic.

Posted by kokoro_ravenclaw Oct 20th 2007

wait no, albusmadecry, i didn't mean what i said to your comment or about you, don't take it like that. i was saying it about the comments i read in the whole list of comments for this article saying stuff like "gays ruined the book!" and "dumbledore chose to be gay!" and "he's gay so he's a sinner" and stuff like that. i think you were fairly on the ball with what you said, i wasn't talking about your comment and sorry if you thought otherwise. gays are gays, let's get over it. if you don't want to imagine dumbledore as gay, that's your own personal choice and that's fine.....but for those who will now see him as a gay, that shouldn't be looked upon as a downside to dumbledore, he's just as great as he was before you heard about all this.

Posted by Thefourhouses93 Oct 20th 2007

ha... lilo and stitch are better then proud family lol that on right now...on disney channel 2 i get 1 and 2.. lol... WOOT WOOT dvds lol.....

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

see now, its officially called the g-word, because as far as Dumbledore is concerned he is asexual now. He has no idea what the term sexual means, and as far as I'm concerned, neither do I. There is no gay, there is no straight, there is just a saucy old man with earmuffs who likes earwax jelly beans and children. So there. *wink, smile*

Posted by kokoro_ravenclaw Oct 20th 2007

by the way, as much as i am against homosexual discrimination and homophobia, i personally am also shocked with this news. if he was gay, and if this was deemed "important" enough by the series' CREATOR then she obviously thinks its an important fact, why the hell weren't the whole harry potter community told earlier in this 17 year journey? why do we have to CHANGE the image of a character we've developed through so many years, and what's more, AFTER the whole experience is actually finished? it's not that i'm mad dumbledore's gay, it's the fact that i'm mad jk rowling didn't include this in the actual books somewhere or at least TELL us like 10 years ago, because now that this whole series is over for us, it's practically impossible to change an image of character you've grown up with. she should have either written this in somewhere OR told us damnit...

Posted by Thefourhouses93 Oct 20th 2007

hahahahaha....JELLY BEANS....lol ummmmmm the g-word hilarous!...... same im just saying to myself none of this means nothing because i repeat i stopped when the books stopped... The interview are just things extra lol....lalalala

Posted by tiassa Oct 20th 2007

i dont know gay suits him and i cant think of any scene in the books which will change for me now. in fact i kind of thoght a little about dumbledore being gay in the seventh book so i really dont see the diffrence its nice to think of all old people as a sexsual but alas they are not

Posted by diasphora Oct 20th 2007

Quiscalus--I've only read your short post with the question. My apologies. My personal answer to the question, though, is that D's being Machiavellian says neither positive or negative for gay characters (or people), whether we know their orientation or not. It says nothing, in fact. Malfoy's a twat--this says nothing about other hetero characters' twattery. Hermione is smart. Says nothing about the intelligence of other white (or is she white?) females. Now, if you meant something else by the question, this could get to be a reallllllllllly interesting convo soon, though I have to admit I haven't read The Prince since my uni days. hehe. (Okay, I'm showing my age here. ) I'm having more fun on this board than I ever have before!

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

see, that's what I said in the first place, and all these angry people threw all this zero tolerance crap at me and acted like I was Hitler or something. Once again, I love Albus, and JKRowling made a mistake by throwing in some last minute political correctness. Ha. Proud Family does suck, modern cartoons blow in general.

Posted by kokoro_ravenclaw Oct 20th 2007

can anyone else here imagine these characters also being gay: gilderoy lockhart pomona sprout zacharias smith rita skeeter colin/dennis creevey moaning myrtle

Posted by Thefourhouses93 Oct 20th 2007

yea lol prud family... is so bad its hialrous.. hhahaha sugar momma....I agree this is just so random and if it was important then she should of mentioned it in the books ... I believe everything is true in the books... not just what comes out of JKR mouth... its that simple lol what LOCKHART are you serious he was more inlove with himself.. he could never love anyone besides himself lol....

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

I draw the line after gueildroy.

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

Kokoro, that's why I think either (a) JKR made it up on the spot (or after the all books were published), or (b) she didn't want to put it in the books because she was afraid of the reactions it would get.

Posted by kokoro_ravenclaw Oct 20th 2007

i can imagine dobby and sirius and snape and cornelius fudge being gay as well... sorry if noone else can but i just wouldn't be suprised if she told us any of them were gay, haha.. dobby and kreacher shippers.. ;) haha

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

no. shut up. thats not funny.

Posted by vts_vts Oct 20th 2007

kokoro_ravenclaw : But that's exactly the point - the additional knowledge of Dumbledore being gay should NOT change the image you have about him - unless you have some preconceived notions that a person being gay changes his entire character.

Posted by animalover Oct 20th 2007

dude that sux. dumbledore? gay? heck no. thats crap. Jo didnt have 2 go this far

Posted by Thefourhouses93 Oct 20th 2007

albusmademecry- i agree not funny.... ok except dobby and kreacher it just sounded funny in my head lol.....omg, sugar momma and pap-e are hilarous on proud family they are in Las vegas right now lol HAHAHAH...

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

Vts_vts, then why didn't JKR just put it in one of the later books? Most people that read HP aren't going to come across this, so if JKR was trying to teach people a lesson about judging people because of their sexual orientation, this doesn't really work.

Posted by kokoro_ravenclaw Oct 20th 2007

Quiscalus I think you're right on the ball with that one... I don't think she just made it up for publicity or anything, that's not like her at all.... If she didn't think of him being gay, and only said it to make a "WOW!" factor, then she makes the character gay in turn 'cause the whole world will regard him as gay and then she'll have to change as well, and she wouldn't change a character that she loved for the public; she didn't keep Fred, Hedwig, Dobby, Lupin, Tonks or Sirius alive and everyone loved them. I think your B) might be the answer... Possibly because she feared the difference in relationships and opinions towards and with Dumbledore in the public if she announced he was gay before everyone learned to love him, in case his homosexuality was a case for estrangement from fans. I'd like more of an explanation from JK about this... I'm thinking now, maybe she just didn't seem to care that much? Sexuality hadn't even DIPPED into the story at all and maybe it just never crossed her mind as important? But then again, that whole Gellert Grindelwald love thing is sorta important.... Maybe she believed it was obvious? No she couldn't have. I am so confused.... JK, you have some explaining to do.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

well, of course. everybody has preconcieved notions about everything. Otherwise we would be surprised by every little turn of events. You can't act like gay people don't act differently than straight people. And I don''t mean that stereotypically. But you can usually tell by the small signs. If Rowling had this all planned, she could have dropped hints like she does about everything else throughout the series. Then we would all figure it out WHILE DUMBLEDORE WAS STILL BEING CONSTRUCTED IN OUR MINDS!!!

Posted by Thefourhouses93 Oct 20th 2007

yea.... idk im just going to enjoy the movies and books and not give a crap about this whole Dumbledore being gay...... its not in the books or movies so its not anything i should know about.. ok now Brandy and Mr. Whiskers is on....

Posted by whizgal Oct 20th 2007

WHAT??? of all the people in HP world, its Dumbledore?i cant believe it.great, now my friends will tease me.why JKR had to reveal ths??is this even important to the story?she should stop making stuffs up after the series is over.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

Now, if she would like to write another book, on the other hand....so long as it was good and not overkill...

Posted by vts_vts Oct 20th 2007

Quiscalus : It's perfect the way she revealed it. There's nothing about the love life of Dumbledore in the books. So, instead of saying that DD is gay in the books so that readers would instantly change the way they think about him, you first read the series and already have this image of DD, and when JKR adds the fact that DD was gay, you see that gay people are like everyone else, and the sudden knowledge of a person being gay doesn't change the person from a good person to a bad person of vice versa.

Posted by Thefourhouses93 Oct 20th 2007

I still think she went upon it the wrong way.......omg Brandy and Mr Whiskers is HIALROUS lol Bloody Hell its almost 7 in the morin lol

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

Vts_vts, she had the perfect opportunity to put that in book 7. That way she can preach that to everybody who reads the books, and not just the fans who go on fansites and read interviews.

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

I'm done arguing this. I have to tell my cousin about Albus yet. This might break him. He thinks he knows all.

Posted by vts_vts Oct 20th 2007

Quiscalus : I think she always had the idea when she wrote the story, but was too afraid to reveal it. She wanted to make sure the coast was clear before she told it.

Posted by kokoro_ravenclaw Oct 20th 2007

yep, definetely... if she couldn't do it by book 7, that's a flaw in her writing... brandy and mr. whiskers? the one about the dog and the rabbit on the island lol... but why is that on at this time? where are you all from? it's night in australia.

Posted by Thefourhouses93 Oct 20th 2007

its on because i have Disney 1 and 2... Im from Pennslyvannia its early in morning... lol yea they are stuck on the island... lol

Posted by kokoro_ravenclaw Oct 20th 2007

with that random spanish snake thing? hahaha well have fun watching i'm off for bed... hope no more post-series news shockers are released by morning...

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

Vts_vts, why should she be afraid? One of the largest themes in the whole series, especially book 5, was to speak up for the truth even though there are people who want to silence you. If she was afraid to say something about Dumbledore, that would awefully hypocritical of JKR. She has a lot of explaining to do... (And I still think that she could've put it in book 7 since our opinions of the characters were pretty solid.)

Posted by viaaurelia1310 Oct 20th 2007

Can you imagine all the hardships Dumbledore had to go through in his early teen years? First, his sister is attacked, his father goes to jail, then his mother dies. Finally, someone, an equal shows up and he falls in love. Then his sister dies, his brother hates him, he's forced to see the man he loves for what he really is, then stalls as long as possible, but eventually he has to challenge him and send him to jail. Poor poor Dumbledore! I can hardly imagine how lost he must've felt after Gellert left, his family dead except for a brother who despised him. Argh! By the way... we can call him Big Gay Al now!

Posted by Thefourhouses93 Oct 20th 2007

ok im going to bed..this whole comment talking has remind me of the good old times ... Im excited for this to pass over... Omg it was amazing talk to you albusmademecry .... hopefully we will cross comment paths again and have some laughs.. Bye nite ...

Posted by riddled Oct 20th 2007

WHOA!!! I'm so shocked by the Dumbledore thing. I never saw it coming. It's amazing how many of us thought of Dumbledore as just...I don't know...like he wasn't interested in a relationship with ANYONE. I have no idea why I thought that...maybe coz he was so learned, I thought he was married to his work. :-p I can't say I agree with it, but that doesn't make me ignorant or homophobic. It will be interesting to re-read the books with this knowledge now. I'd like to re-read Deathly Hallows where it talks about how he met Gindelwald and stuff. That should be interesting. I think it's cool that J.K. thought about all of this stuff though. Some people are saying it's unnneccessary to know it and stuff, but I think that even if something like this is never mentioned in the books, it's hardly irrelevant. I mean, in life it's our experiences that shape us, so the more you know about a character's past, the more you'll understand them.

Posted by modern_marauder Oct 20th 2007

Wait ! Does this make Grindewald gay as well?

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

I don't know. Wow, how did I miss that question though?

Posted by muditsharma Oct 20th 2007

Dumbledore? Just a minute. I'll just go get an air sickness bag. OK No need...

Posted by 13hplover13 Oct 20th 2007

LMAO, wonder why she brought that up??OMG NEVILLE MARRIES HANNAH-MELINDALEO GETS IT RIGHT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!(for those who havent got a clue what im on about go to phonenix song and read power of emotion, curse of the damned and the seventh gorcurx)

Posted by bongahead Oct 20th 2007

this is outrageous! i hate jkrowling for saying something like that. Dumbledore is my favourite charachter in the whole series and in literature even, it makes me sad how she is ruining his picture like this and in deathly hallows, she made him look as is if he turned out to be a bad character &even said he was manipulating Harry- and now she's come up with this ridiculous idea of him being 'gay'! I REFUSE TO ACCEPT IT.this Is a disgrace to the mort kind, wise, and loveable character she created.

Posted by modern_marauder Oct 20th 2007

It's interesting how answering one question, which was "Did Dumledore ever find true love" (or along those lines), has created soo many more like my Grindelwald one. Imagine being the person who asked it! omg i wonder how they feel. And please everyone rmember she didnt just say this out of the blue, Dumbledore has been gay for years as stated. I think everyone is just so shocked to find out a such a major thing and it proves that the Harry Potter world will never end, we will just keep learning and learning.

Posted by Ceywood Oct 20th 2007

Why does having one preference or another make such a huge difference to the wondeful character of Dumbledore? And omitting the fact that Dumbeldore is a homosexual is the same as omitting the fact that he (or any of the other charcaters for that matter) is heterosexual - and I didn't hear any complaints about this. I'm also a little confused about the suggestion that Rowling somehow made this up on the spir of the moment to be politically correct - forgive me if I'm wrong but her level of detail before now has been spectacular and it's not as though the books were becoming unpopular, sales were droppign and she needed a spike.

Posted by Royalstar Oct 20th 2007

bongahead, you're a bonehead...

Posted by condelli5 Oct 20th 2007

no, it can't be true. there are no words to describe my state of shock. I simply refuse to believe it, it has to be some mean joke of hers. Why do people ask such questions, anyway?

Posted by albusmademecry Oct 20th 2007

but I feel like she led us on...kind of in a funny way. I'm past mad and moving on to slightly amused by this whole thing. I mean, what about Mcgonagal? What about him blushing about the earmuff comment in the very beginning?

Posted by ebrowers Oct 20th 2007

Dumbledore WHAT? Oh come on. I'm going to try to forget about this "turn out". A great wizard of all time is homosexual? Thankfully it is not mentioned inside of the book.

Posted by diasphora Oct 20th 2007

Oh, for chrissakes. Saying you hate Dumbledore for this is as every bit as logical as saying you hate Harry Potter for being heterosexual. --God, I hate this planet. /bad mood

Posted by Ceywood Oct 20th 2007

Yes - I am having trouble understanding how the perceived sin of being in love with someone who just happens to be of the same gender as himself, somehow erases all of the good things that Dumbeldore did. And what does it matter anyway? Revealing it after the final novel simply highlights the fact that being heterosexual or not does not change who you are - the things everyone believes of Dumbeldore are the same now as they were last week and 10 years ago.

Posted by modern_marauder Oct 20th 2007

Thats true albusmademecry, I always had a secret desire for Dumbledore and Mcgonagal getting together but alas i guess different things were planned. I don't mind this news though i have a close gay friend and we always have a blast together but I must say he is a bit more... 'out there' than Dumbledore was and do you think anyone else in the wizarding world knew?
