More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC
More info revealed from Jo's reading in NYC 2,000 lucky fans had the opportunity to interact with JK Rowling this evening at Carnegie Hall. The reading was rather eventful, as Jo revealed a lot of new information previously unknown about the series.

The most notable news of the night was the revelation of Dumbledore's sexuality. Jo says Dumbledore was gay and in love with Gellert Grindelwald. JK, in response to the audience's reaction, said "If I had known this would have made you so happy, I would have told you years ago."

Not quite as head-turning, but equally significant, Jo announced Neville Longbottom's marriage with Hannah Abbott. Hannah became the new landlady of the Leaky Cauldron.

Other heart-warming (ha!) news was revealed about Petunia Dursley. The night Harry left Privet Drive, Petunia wanted to tell Harry, "I know what you're up against and I hope it turns out okay."

Stay tuned, more to come soon!

wow, i wasnt expecting that. i mean, i've always wondered if dumbledore had married at some point or something. but i think its great that he's gay. it puts him in a new light, but a good one. it works. that explains why he took so long to go and fight gellert, and only fought him because everybody else was pressuring him to do so. its sad that he had to do it though. i wonder if gellert was gay? but i am disappointed that neville married hannah. i thought he and luna were the perfect match. now i want to know what the creevy brothers went on to become...

I read on yahoo that she also let david yates know, because she saw sometihng in the script about a girl dumby used to like or sumtin.

Get over yourself, harry8voldemort!!!

Posted by homefly Oct 20th 2007

What about asexuality (Please Google it)? I always thought of Dumbledore as not having sexual desires. I really don't care if when he was younger he did have romantic attractions that were homosexual in nature, but it just makes more sense to me to NOT have Dumbledore caring about having sexual contact at all. Why does everything have to be about sex? *sigh*

Posted by Kgal Oct 20th 2007

Wow, that was unexpected. Never would have guessed it.

Posted by nieninque Oct 20th 2007

Stop this "Harry alone with Dumbledore" crap!Dumbledore's sexuality was not in the books? Why?Because it's irrevelant. It's nothing to do with Harry.Harry doesn't learn it.It doesn't effect Dumbledore's actions as the war leader and Harry's mentor. It's his sexual orientation and personal choice.Besides he was 100 something. Stop the immature comments.Dumbledore was a wise, lovely, caring, amazin g man,a great war leader,a very good teacher who happened to be gay.

Posted by techan Oct 20th 2007

Dumblydore gay? What is the point? More publicity I suppose. Just seems like a waste.

Posted by Waffles Oct 20th 2007

What?!?!? That is fudge awesome! ^________________^ G et the fudge over yourselves, you ignorant homophobes! Seriously. Your mentality is so old-fashioned. You are like my grandma. Well actually...even my grandma is okay with gay people. :P

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

oh so tru nieninque. besides, hes gay. not a pedophile.

Posted by SilverWitch7 Oct 20th 2007

Dumbledore...gay? OMG! This is such a shock and I thiink it now sort of makes sense. I really wanted Dumbledore and McGonagall to have had a sort of, fling or something. But Gellert Grindelwald? Dumbledore is GAY? I think I'm going to faint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! Please tell me this is a joke! but you guys are right. His sexuality doesn't change the fact that he was a great wizard, but now I sort of see him in a sort of different view. I need a moment.

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

I also heard alot of people complaining the lack of gay characters in hp at my school and such. well, there ya go!

Posted by felixfelicis888 Oct 20th 2007

GET OFF MUGGLENET IF YOUR GONNA INSULT JKR FOR BEING CREATIVE!!!!!!!!!! IT'S HER STORY, SHE CAN DO WHAT SHE WANTS. IF YOU DON'T LIKE HER CREATIVITY, THEN JUST LEAVE AND JOIN LAURA MALLORY. i totally agree with nieninque. :)

Posted by DucksRMagical Oct 20th 2007

I was there! It was so cool. :) I definitely didn't expect Dumbledore to be gay, but I don't care if he is. Everyone started applauding when she said it. My sister had a feeling he was gay.

Posted by Dobbysgirl13 Oct 20th 2007

OMG that's all I can say... oh my god.... How long did she know this??? And I want to know what the other news was!! Man, I can't wait to listen to Mugglecast after THIS.... And was there a point in posting the other news? No one really paid attention to it!!!

Posted by Ruby_321 Oct 20th 2007

i totally agree with nieninque as well, Dumbeldore wasnt a pedophile.. he was like a grandfather to Harry, and I think thats also what he saw himself as.

it might be pedophilic, but it's still drop dead hilarious.

Posted by dobby101 Oct 20th 2007

Dumbledore was GAY?!? That's crazy.....

Posted by peroxwhy_gen Oct 20th 2007

Dumbledore was never my favorite character but he was the LAST person I expected to be gay. The very last. I don't think I'll be able to reread the books without getting the giggles at some parts now.

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

I think its really sad about grindewald :( it reminds me about anakin and padme for some reason...

Posted by nat089 Oct 20th 2007

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! ................ ......................... . *is still in shock*

Posted by SiriuslyInLove7 Oct 20th 2007

So what!? Dumbledore is gay. That doesn't stop him from being the character that we all love!!! (coughcough or at least most of us do). I'll admit that I was a bit surprised... And Neville and HANNAH!? Ohmigosh... That stinks. =[ I was always a bit Neville/Luna fan. *Sigh* And I wish that Petunia had actually said that-- I probably would've cried. But, anywhoo, some of you really need to grow up... Remember: If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all!

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

I think jk should just make a list of every student ever shown in the history of ever, and show there proffesions and spouses

Posted by Quiscalus Oct 20th 2007

I agree with you homefly; Dumbledore, to me, was an embodiment of love without sex. That's why I like asexual!Dumbledore.

Posted by padfoot_prongs Oct 20th 2007

Uh omg** like infinite!!!! But i still love the books, its really surprising though! but i dont have any issues with it! Still TOTALY HEART the books!

Posted by Lynn Oct 20th 2007

So cool!

Posted by lionrw86 Oct 20th 2007

OH... MY... GOD. I mean I never woulod have thought that Dumbledore was/is gay. Well I still think he is an amazing character! I love J.k. Always expanding her horizons. Hannah and Neville is so random but I guess it's cute. I still think he should have ended up with Luna. And last but not least that's strange but sweet what Aunt Petunia was thinking. well anyway there goes all the Dumbledore/ McGonagal fanfics.

Posted by Elwood_Blues Oct 20th 2007

So what if he's gay? What does it matter, he is still the greatest wizard who ever lived.

Posted by Zippytwocats Oct 20th 2007

Hi all, My daughter and husband had tickets to last night's reading. Our whole family got so much out of the evening - thank you JKR and Scholastic. Although I did not get to go, there's a lot I can say from a mother's perspective - the idea that your 8-year old daughter gets to dress up in a fabulous red dress, go to Carnegie Hall with her dad, meet JK Rowling and walk away with her words, wisdom and a signed book to beat - it's an unimaginably happy and profound feeling. One of my friends had said "too bad you didn't win the real lottery", which of course you all know could not be further from the truth. Here's what my daughter walked away with (I copied this from AP Wire): "Rowling, finishing a brief "Open Book Tour" of the United States, her first tour here since 2000, also said that she regarded her Potter books as a "prolonged argument for tolerance" and urged her fans to "question authority." If those words, given to a person early in her life, is not winning the lottery, I don't know what is. Of note - my husband told me Jo made it a point to say some small words to everyone as they filed past the signing table. How thrilling! And how exhausting for her, but you know, she gets it - she understands what it feels like to be those people on the other side of that table. Good for her. PS - my 4-year son and I were not left out in the cold. We went to see "The Wolfs in the Walls", a play based on the weird and wonderful children's book by Neil Gaiman. Fantastic. If you fans have not checked out his work, it is something to consider in "life after HP". Hooray for reading!!

Posted by celebriande Oct 20th 2007

Hooray for diversity and acceptance! Dumbledore's sexuality in no way changes the way we should look at his relationship with Harry or any other characters except Grindelwald. Just because someones a homosexual does not in any way make them a paedophile. A dirty bid GROW UP and GET REAL to anyone who feels the two equate. The deeds of Dumbledore were great and his sexuality does not change it. Why was it necessary to say? Rowling happily provides back-stories for everyone else, but I dont hear people ragging on her wanting more publicity about the Neville/Hannah thing - this really shouldnt be any different. Harry Potter is about acceptance and love in all its forms, embrace it. Its about your deeds, not what sex you're interested in - please don't be so shallow or discriminatory.

I never realised how many pathetic homophobic people there were out there, i for one am glad that JK told us dumbledore was gay it gives him more depth as a person, people are saying that this has ruined the whiole series for them..WHY? The only people who really care about sexuality are those narrow minded enough to believe it's wrong you dont choose to be gay it is a preference. and as for other people saying she shouldnt have said this because of children reading it well i am a mother and i commend her for saying it, its about time someone added realistic lifestyles to a story life is not black or white children need to know its ok to make your own choices in life whether it be there sexuality or something else, if children were given more information at a young age there wouldnt be so much bulling, suicides or even mass deaths. People need to look beyond a persons physical prefrences like sexuality, colour, race e.t.c at the end of the day no matter what you are we all bleed the same colour and that makes us humans no matter how diabolical and cruel some of us may be.

Posted by TallestPurple Oct 20th 2007

While I must say I don't really give a monkey's trumpet whether or not Dumbledore enjoyed the company of other men or not, I can't help but feel that, in time, JKR may come to regret this. Merely because, if this gets spun the right way by the media, there is going to be A LOT of backlash, and it's always very hard to defend something that shouldn't need defending in the first place. When you think about it though, the evidence really was all there, particularly in the way Dumbledore had a tendency to form tight relationships with just one other person for a certain amount of time. Grindelwald, obviously, and then later Flamel and eventually Elphias Doge, who I even felt when reading the book was talking about Dumbledore with an exceptionally tender fondness.

Posted by Fred_George_nut Oct 20th 2007

*Bangs head against wall multiple times* The harry potter haters always told me Dumby was gay. They were right on accident. Wake up, self! This is a nightmare! Plz let it all be a joke! No! No! No! NOOOOO! My dad is gonna read about this and im gonna be banned from reading Harry Potter again!

Posted by Luna_Lover_10 Oct 20th 2007

DucksRMagical you were there!!!!! omg that must have been sooooo cool, you are a lucky duck! felixfelicis88 8: i agree, if you dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all! Waffles: More power to the people! so yeah i just read 551-579 and commented on everything i knew i agreed with!

Posted by Die_Zimtzicke Oct 20th 2007

I don't care if Dumbledore's gay or not. That's not the point I was trying to make yesterday. The point is the books should stand on their own. If something mattered, it should have been in them. Why dump on everyone's fan theories now, either to shoot them down or confirm them? Who are they hurting? Jo should shut up and let her work speak for itself.

Posted by DucksRMagical Oct 20th 2007

Thanks, dragon! Definitely one of the best nights of my life. Although I was in the last row, lol. It was still awesome. I got to meet her. I never really thought of Dumbledore as gay, but I never really thought about him dating women either. I can't remember one time ever wondering if Dumbledore ever fell in love. I don't think it matters what his sexual orientation is. I won't think of him the same anymore, but I wouldn't think of him the same if I was told he ever loved a woman either. I still think he's a great character and he's still one of my favorites. That's all that matters.

Posted by voldiekilledthedodos Oct 20th 2007

That's amazing! :) It makes me really happy. (about Dumbledore.)

Posted by celebriande Oct 20th 2007

Lol, theres a lot to be typish about - am i fuelling the hype though? i just wish people would be tolerant; gay people arent any different, gosh

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

The only problem I have with Dumby being gay, is the fact 2 weeks ago I did a dh book report based on the theme ,love is blind but firendship closes its eyes'. Of course I based grindewald and dumby on the friendship part. but now my project is obsolete! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! oh well, at least I already got graded ;)

Posted by padfoot_prongs Oct 20th 2007

ok i think were about to break 600 whats the record reesponses?

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Oct 20th 2007

Im pretty sure the record is more then 1000.

Posted by chommy Oct 20th 2007

... You don't know how shocked I was when I saw this on the NEWS. I felt betrayed for some reason ...

Posted by SuzieQ Oct 20th 2007

wow! I never would have guessed that about Dumbledore, but now that she's said it it makes total sense. I can totally see it. And Neville married Hannah! awwwwwwwwwwwww! Good for them! and I'm glad to see that Hannah was getting on with her life after her mother died. i wonder how she and Neville met? As for Petunia, i thought she was wanting to say something like that... PS to all the people who commented that they found this news somewhat distressing, thought that it must be a joke, lighten up! =D Why shouldn't Dumeldore be gay? it's not like it's going to ruin the entire series, we've all read it, and we all love it. don't let this ruin it for you!

Posted by Luna_Lover_10 Oct 20th 2007

I can't believe this. It must be a mistake, it has to be. I have nothing against gay people (my hairdresser is gay and I call him my uncle even though there is no relation) it's just that DUMBLEDORE! The person that was there for Harry when he needed him. The old kind, wise, mentor? And all of you jerks saying "I knew that's why HArry was his fave. student" can shut your piehole!! If Dumbledore was gay, why would he be trying to kill all these guys (Grynwalld and VOLDEMORT!!!) It's pathetic. I really think that J.K was honestly just trying to make a joke off it. Tommorrow on mugglenet we'll probably see a stroy that says "J.K JOKES" or something like that. So I warn EVERYONE, please don't take this to seriously because it was a slap in the face for me (nd others) but, I guess I'll live. EXCEPT!!!!!!!!!!!!! LUNA MARRIES NEVILLE! THAT IS NO EXCEPTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! IT TOTALY HAPPENS SO SHUT UP IF YOU DONT THINK SO! LONG LIVE LUNA LONGBOTTOM! **--- Luna ---**

Posted by ninja58 Oct 20th 2007

NOOOOO!!!! October fools joke please? Not Dumby. I just can't beleive it. Still in shock and denial.

Posted by Miss_Malfoy Oct 20th 2007

OMG this has to be a joke! But it's not...I mean, JKR said it herself...and a lot of people did guess right about him and Grindelwald... But GUYS! The Dumbledore we've been seeing in the movies is gay! That's SO WEIRD! I don't have anything wrong with this, but it's just really strange news to wake up to. And I'm kind of disappointed about Neville and Hannah getting together. Neville/Luna or Neville/Ginny (even though the epilogue totally shoots it down) would have been better.
